“It’s just the movie, baby,” Memo said, trying really really hard to not laugh at Alex. He pulled the larger man further into his lap, the best weighted blanket. “If you’re gonna get too scared we can stop.” There was just a little bit of a dare in the words.

The scene changes to somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Kalos. Thick green forests swathe an unpaved road as the three main characters drive a dinky little car through the woods. They peer out the windows at the ominous, looming trees.

Memo frowned down at the seam of dream mist, wishing it would just slap together like two pieces of bread on a particularly nasty sandwich. On the one hand, Alex was right, and was solving this specific right-now problem worth possibly risking the integrity of the ground and causing more problems in the future?

On the other hand… gods, was it getting hard to care. His forethought machine was fried, along with his object permanence. No one told him it got worse as he aged.

He clapped fingers over his eyes and dragged them down his face. “Ugh. I don’t know, then. What do you think we should do?”

Then Alex did this miraculous thing and blushed (when he got red, he got red everywhere. Memo knew from wonderful firsthand experience) and it was like all the problems in the world ceased to exist. Love was a wonderful power. Like filling everything with helium.

“Well, I’m already… floaty enough as it is.” He spun a finger in a circle to indicate. “Moving everywhere. Can’t slow down. Generally pretty flexible. And you taught me how to fly, so. It only makes sense that--,”

His long-winded (pun intended) profession of love was interrupted by an ear-piercing shriek. The dream mist turned dark and began to warp and writhe, shooting out like a lunging shadow as a strange Misdreavous-like Pokemon launched from it. Memo pressed palms to Alex’s chest to push him out of the way, taking the phantom force full brunt to the chest, knocking the wind out of him and turning him cold.

War is a waste. He caught the words under the buzz of his dragonfly’s wings, and it made something squeeze in his heart. War was a waste. Waste of time, waste of life, waste of resources. Especially knowing Hoenn was the origin point for the end of all worlds… squabbles over turf seemed particularly egregious.

All the stupidity and hurt, all the senseless violence… everything that Memo disagreed with down to the last cell in his body, it was all happening, and he had his part to play. If it meant Lash didn’t get gunned down by some trigger happy Leaguer or churned under the surface of the Rocket machine, he would be here, in his stupid little uniform, doing his stupid little job.

A little mental clock chimed in his head. It would soon be time to check in with Alexei Ivanov and let him know he wasn’t a) dead or b) grievously wounded.

When he was done, he reached for the bar of soap, palm dropping to squeeze Alex’s shoulder, keeping one point of contact on him at all times.

“That would never happen,” he said, voice calm and soothing. “I’d wait here for you forever. You know that.”

It would take everything in Memo to stay. He was a restless mover by nature. But Alex had given him heft and weight and permanence like he’d never known before.

Memo’s Galarian, too, though he’s well and truly ripped out his roots and set fire to them.

The Dragapult is pushed back and peels easily away, the fade of its tail flashing teal against gray clouds. It pulls a simple loop-de-loop and surges up to spit dragon breath in Memo’s direction.

But Nike is an experienced flyer, too, and she cranks her head and flattens her wings, flying diagonally along the edge of the blue flame. It singes her underside and fills the air with the scent of cooked meat; the soles of Memo’s boots take the brunt of the attack for him, and the dragonfly curls away, thankfully not much worse for wear.

Nike corkscrews and spins, flipping around to dash in close to the Dragapult and lash out with dragon tail.

“Probably. Does get points for sheer stupidity, though.”

Alaclar doesn’t expect the Swoobat to charge straight for him, so the two of them collide, head first. The Yanma is stunned and staggers back, wings stilling, and it drops through the air, falling for a short bit before getting its shit in gear again and curling it’s tail around for another air slash.

‘Toodles’ makes Memo think of old ladies in voluminous skirts with big fancy hats and lots of cats. Or maybe he’s just thinking of Aristocats. Do they even say toodles in that move?

Nike hooks sharply upwards and whips her tail, firing off a boom burst towards the slippery customer.

Meanwhile, the air slash shreds through the Woobat, sending puffs of fur flying; the psychic, meanwhile, hits Alaclar, stopping him, briefly, and making him wobble like a glitching video game asset. He whips his head side-to-side to shake it off, curling his hind end around to pew-pew off a sonic boom.

If ‘taking her seriously’ meant ‘leaving her to her own devices in an active warzone’, then, no, Memo was not taking her seriously. She could have been a wizened old crone with baggy tits and liver spots and he still would have asked to escort her.

Shalin had smallish punctures peppered up and down one leg, crusted over with dried blood. Her ripped and torn suit revealed heinous bruises forming already.

“Unfortunately, Hoenn is a front line. All of it. At all times.” He'd learned that first hand through the numerous apocalyptic events the region had thrown at him.

He put one hand on her knee, gently, and fished in a pocket of his flightsuit for his phone, rifling quickly through his PC to summon a Pokeball. With quick motion, he pocketed his phone and swiped the ball from the air when it appeared in a flash of transpo-sparkles.

A moment later and his Galarian Rapidash stood at their side, nosing forward to sniff at the wound. Zuza was his best friend and best soldier; she knew something was up just from the fraught emotions pinging off of her horn. The appendage began to glow a pale pink as small circles of heal pulse began to roll off of her and wrap Shalin’s leg. Carefully, the seeds were wriggled free, pinging to the ground like spent casings, and the red, ulcerated flesh began to knit close and pinken with healing tissue.
