For all that Talia missed and longed for her home in Johto, there were many things she adored about Hoenn. The Aquarium was one of them.

Her little Cleffa, Amaris, sat on her shoulder as the young woman walked around the exhibit with earnest curiosity, her bright eyes taking in the great expanse of water and all that flourished within it. "Isn't it beautiful, Maris?" she murmured appreciatively to her companion as she watched a Milotic dance beyond the glass. "We should take dear Nova out sometime on the water routes, shouldn't we? I'm sure Starmie need time to swim like this, too."

The heavy sleeves of her long robes provided ample comfort in the cool interior of the exhibit; her turquoise hair, partially tied up with ornamental pins of Ho-oh and Lugia, spilled down her back to warm her neck and shoulders. She took her time enjoying each individual exhibit, smiling at the Goldeen and the Horsea with a wave, then exclaiming at the Dewgong as they lounged in their glacial habitat. At last, she and Amaris found themselves standing before the Corsola exhibit, where a young man was fully engrossed in his music as he scrawled away at his tablet.

Talia didn't consider herself a nosy person, but a curious person. The distinction might be ultimately lost in execution. Seating herself at a nearby alcove, she peered at a distance as if hoping to catch a glimpse at whatever it was he was working on so intently, her large earrings jangling with the movement. Then as he began to tap his fingers in absent dance, she pressed a hand to her mouth, stifling a small giggle.

It was then that the stranger finally looked up, the embarrassment apparent on his face as he waved.

Talia beamed back, waving so that the wide sleeve of her garment shifted with the movement. "You must really love the song that you're listening to," she said warmly. A hand was extended, hopeful, as she gestured for him to join her. "I like music, too. Would you mind if I listened?"

Her Cleffa chirped amicably in agreement.

To Catch a Falling Star [M]

Lightning grasped and choked the sky with its white fingertips, dragging down a serpentine figure and her mistress into the unforgiving maw of the sea. Flashes of illumination revealed the pair of silhouettes in their descent through the clouds -- falling like twin stars struck from the heavens, banished to the mortal realm for their hubris.

Talia's eyes fluttered open to see the celestial expanse of the sky above her, pelted with rain as she fell in slow motion. The water cut her like a thousand tiny needles, blinding her in their glistening curtain of mist and ocean spray. Tears welled in her eyes, each one more drop in the flood.

Why did you think you could matter.

The gentle reassuring touch of her Dragonair had left her, the fluttering silks of her robe caught in the relentless winds that howled around her, clutching the fabric to slow her descent as she spiraled into the night sky.

It reminded her of a story, as most things did. Stories were how Talia made sense of the world, and always had been. So as the young woman plummeted, she thought of Lugia. Such a majestic creature was so powerful, and capable of such cruel devastation, that it plunged itself into the bottom of the deepest trenches undersea rather than risk harming the world. 'That is why we revere Lugia as the Guardian of the Seas, little one.'

Was her fate the same, then? To return to the sea, rather than watch the world's undoing?

Except Lugia's disappearance was a sacrifice. Mine will be... for nothing.

How many nights had Talia put a candle in the windowsill of her little room as she prayed at night for her mother's safety in Johto? One of many refugees staying in a shelter in Hoenn, she had shared the room with two other girls, who groused when she kept the dim light on past their sleeping hours. Until the day she learned no one was left waiting for her in Ecruteak City, and her night returned to darkness again.

Why do you never learn to stop hoping.

The last of the stars vanished as the ocean swallowed Talia whole, the vague outline of her Dragonair wrapping around her one last time before they both careened into the raging surf. The girl's turquoise hair came undone in the thrashing waves; her tired eyes shut as her lungs filled with water.

Give up.

For the first time in Talia's young life, she surrendered to that tiny doubt, and all fight left her numb body. Hope sank with her like a stone into the sea.

Sea Queens [DW]

There were few greater joys for Talia than that of soaring through the sky on her Dragonair, watching the sea glittering down below. Safely riding upon Lyra's back, she sometimes closed her eyes and imagined she flew on the back of the legendary Lugia, safekeeping the glittering seas from harm with a beat of its majestic wings.

Today, however, she kept her eyes open wide to see if anything of interest appeared on the many water routes below. Many Pokemon of various types had been seen in this area, and part of her mission as a new Cadet in the League was to prepare a team capable of defending civilians from harm. This seemed the ideal place to start.

"Oh look, Lyra!" A little gasp escaped her as Talia saw an unfamiliar figure come into view, that of a female trainer riding upon the back of some Water-type Pokemon.

Curiosity compelled her to descend towards this stranger, whom Talia smiled at warmly. "Hello! I couldn't help notice you were out here, too," the girl said, waving in friendly greeting. "Are you also searching for Pokemon, by chance? It can be awfully lonely out here."

Everything about the way that the woman spoke assured that, yes, she did have everything well under control. By the time that edith joy had suggested Talia give her surname, the girl had begun to wonder if she had contributed much of anything to the encounter at all, save for checking that there had been no harm done and not being harmed herself.

"Oh, that is not necessary," Talia started to protest, but it seemed futile to deny someone with such a strong will. "Celes," she relented at last. "Talia Celes of Ecruteak City." A less impactful name than Joy by far, known perhaps only by those locals who frequented the Ecruteak Dance Theater.

Even then, it had been some time since a Celes had danced there at all. The Johto invasion had made certain of that.

"If you're sure you have the matter in hand, Miss Joy, then Lyra and I will scout the area to make sure there were no casualties elsewhere." Talia patted her Dragonair's neck as she was so resolved, this compromise allowing for herself to feel she had earned the right to some reward. "That Electrode is lucky you found it," she said kindly as she climbed Lyra's back. "I hope you both get home safely."

And with that, Talia took once more to the skies.

For all the grace that Talia believed herself to be lacking in her own greeting, Edith Bliss Joy possessed it in spades as she introduced herself.

Of course Talia knew of the House of Joy -- the pink hair should have, in retrospect, suggested the possible connection to that established lineage of Pokecenter nurses.

Though her question wasn't intended to be rude, the young Cadet felt chastised nonetheless, and she dipped her head apologetically.

"Miss Joy, then," she said, respectfully bowing low at the waist. "Is there anything I can do to help? I don't know how you feel about flying, but Lyra can take us anywhere you need."

The Dragonair blinked her beautiful eyes in answer to her trainer's offer, watching the floating Electrode with rapt curiosity as she glided towards the pair with a serpentine fluidity.

Talia nodded in agreement, her earrings jangling with the movement. "That sounds sensible," she said as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

Truthfully, Talia hadn't known Electrodes could have bar codes, much less that local labs used them for such matters. "You seem very knowledgeable about these things," she ventured, her hands clasping behind her back as she leaned forward to look at edith joy more closely. "Do you work at a lab, maybe?"

Wait. This was the backwards way to get to know someone, wasn't it?

"Um, sorry. I meant to ask, what's your name? I'm Talia." Somewhat sheepishly, the young woman extended a hand, the slightly charred sleeve of her kimono shifting with the movement. "I work as a Cadet for the League. A new one, anyway."

It wasn't the most graceful introduction in the world, but in the wake of an explosion, things like grace hopefully didn't matter.

Then it seems that Ho-oh smiles down upon us both," Talia said warmly. "I am glad to hear it. The explosion left us unscathed as well, thankfully. Lyra and I were just patrolling the area, and, well."

Her voice trailed off self-consciously, the thought left unfinished as Talia gestured airily about them both. Several trees had been felled by the impact of the Pokemon's explosion, and a few timid Bug-type Pokemon could be seen creeping back from the outskirts of the tall grasses.

In comparison to the wary wildlife of the area, the pink-haired woman before her looked tall and self-assured, tending to her Blissey and then turning to examine the Electrode with a thoughtful air.

Talia's gaze followed that of her companion's to the inert Pokemon, and her voice grew soft with pity. "Poor creature. What do you think frightened it so much, to implode like that?"

Blessed Lugia, there are so many of them," Talia whispered in awe as she floated over the water route, her Dragonair calmly gliding over the sea with ease. "Do you suppose they do this every year?"

Countless Corsola had begun their trek to Route 129, and this here -- in Route 128 -- was the final leg of their voyage. Until now, precious few things had gotten in the way of safeguarding the pink Water-type Pokemon, and Talia believed a large reason for that was her partner, Locke Jamison.

Somewhat shyly, Talia glanced over her shoulder to see him with his own Water-type Pokemon, which seemed much more suited to the surroundings than her own. The nerves inherent to working with a new person warred with her desire to befriend and to chatter, the latter ultimately winning out as she continued in earnest, "I don't think I ever saw anything like it in Johto, at least. It's wonderful to look at, isn't it?"

Oh!" That single syllable was all Talia could manage before the Electrode imploded.

A blinding light seared through the surroundings while Talia attempted to shield her eyes with the long sleeves of her kimono, to no avail. Thrown back by the sudden impact against the ground, she crawled to her knees and glanced about herself, brow furrowed with worry. "Lyra?" she whispered, and the serpentine form of her Dragonair coiled protectively around her in answer, nudging her to her feet with a gentle push of her winged head. "You're still here, thank Arceus," Talia exhaled, visibly relieved as she embraced her Pokemon.

Then Talia gathered herself, and climbed onto her Dragonair to ascend into the sky. It was her duty, she reminded herself, as a new Ranger of the League to see if others had been so lucky -- or unlucky. At least, it should be, if it wasn't already.

Not too far away below, the figure of edith joy was visible with her Blissey: both looking slightly worse for wear, but otherwise relatively unharmed. Relief washed over Talia anew as she descended beside her, gently alighting to the ground to run over to their side. "Are you both all right?" she asked, genuine concern radiating through her every word.
