Kepler felt like a parasite in his own body on any given day. Something floating here in this human-shaped puddle of viscera that just so happened to be wrapped in skin. Dysphoria was a motherfucker.

He’s watching Hegemone chunk rocks at Nihilego and wondering how it feels to touch their torn bells when Ameena’s question distracts him. “Huh?”

He did hear it, under the chaos of battle and the constant, deep heartbeat of the Ultra Sea. A repeated scratching-- a skittering, if you will.

“Something wicked this way comes,” he said, stepping back to prepare to bolt; he thought he’d had a good grasp on his fear and anxiety, but--

“Holy shit what the fuck IS that thing!” It’s so gross. He can see the organs within it flexing and moving under the semi-transulscent exo-skeleton. Something like a handprint presses against the inside of it, as though it’s trying to break free. “Don’t have to tell me twice.”

Whilst it was imprisoned, Hegemone fired off a spike cannon at it, bisecting a segment. The longer half of the beast fell off into the deep abyss; the shorter, closer half dangled entrails through the dark.

Pluto kept the protect barrier up as long as she could; when it’s soap-bubble sheen faded, she would conjure another, letting them expire naturally so as to preserve her energy as long as possible.

Kepler lived every moment on the knife’s edge of fight or flight; a rabbit out of room, with nowhere to run. He didn’t even notice the anxiety-- you get used to it, when you’re constantly so nervous you’re liable to feel like bugs are crawling on you at any second.

He reached out and pressed a gloved hand against the strange, flesh-colored wall. It beat against his palm, warm enough to feel even through his suit. When he pulled his hand away, sticky tendrils of something wet draped from his fingertips.

“Kinky.”

Purple sludge spattered against their protect shield, making Kepler jump. In a swirl of activity a swarm of Ultra Beasts rushed them; Pluto shrank the protect in to conserve energy and cover just Ameena and Kepler. In a flash of light, Hegemone appeared, and began levitating and hurling rocks at their attackers, denting carapaces and ripping holes in soft bells.

“Terrifying,” he said, in agreement with Ameena. “Though I’ve never had a good interaction with an Ultra Beast.” Even the one he’d studied with THEO BECKETT had been fucking horrifying, in its own way. “Do you think it’s like a mind control? Or maybe more symbiotic than parasitic?”

Black fur and purple-tinged skin go flying as Mercury’s hind claws dig furrows in the Grimmsnarl’s abdomen. The smell of baking clay and burning flesh and hair fill the air. It’s noxious, and Kepler claps hands over his mouth, to keep from gagging, or screaming, or both.

Mercury is slow to rise, even with the Grimmsnarl lifted off of his form. One of his legs drags uselessly. He can tell this is coming to a head, so with one last heave of effort, he bounces forward, hopping on one leg to spin and strike the Grimmsnarl with his body, before releasing one final double edge at close range…

He doesn’t see Fenelle’s not because he’s too busy being amazed that their idea fucking worked. He barely resists the urge to dig fingers into his own hair and pull and scream. Holy shit!

Mercury wavers, thrown off balance by the heaving earth, paws slick with mud struggling to keep his balance. As he’s struggling with that, the Grimmsnarl lunges, and they’re tangled together once more.

Spirit Break bears him down into the muck, there’s a snap of something that sounded too much like bone for Kepler’s comfort.

“C’mon, Merc! Fight!”

With nowhere to go, and everything to lose, Mercury’s instincts take over, and his brain kicks into survival mode. He bends his knees and begins to claw at the Grimmsnarl’s lower abdomen-- the classic move of any pinned rabbit-- using double edge to try and do as much damage as possible. There’s a tinkling sound, like shattering glass, as the recoil from the move further damages one of his legs. Using the pain as a driving force, he tries to knock the Grimmsnarl off of him with focus blast.

He can almost see the Grimmsnarl’s eyes go wide (or maybe he’s imagining it, his adrenaline is pumping so hard it’s replaced every trace of blood in his veins).

They lock in like grapplers, leech life pins singing out a high pitch whine almost beyond the ken of human hearing. They glow green as the Grimmsnarl leeches Mercury’s lifeforce.

Kepler doesn’t think Merc can win a contest of pure strength. “Use your speed!”

Mercury locks his arms around one of the Grimmsnarl’s and kicks in his agility, dropping to the ground to try and slide between the thing’s legs and throw it; he dodges the snapping teeth by inches, springing back to his feet to hurl another pyro ball, sliding in the muck to gain some distance on his opponent.

Mercury dances, falling for the fake out, though bounce has taken him mostly out of reach of the swipe. Claws rake across his cheek, opening red lines in the white fur and sending tufts of the stuff falling wetly to the ground.

Recollecting himself, he drops into a crouch, grabs a small stone, and thrusts his palm at the Grimmsnarl’s legs, launching the burning pyro ball in an attempt to knock the beast off kilter.

Leech life sticks him face-first, pins and needles stabbing into his flesh like horrific acupuncture. His shoulders go tingly, his movements turning slightly sluggish.

Kepler keeps his distance, not taking his eyes off the fight, though he does find it rather funny that it’s turned into a fairly stereotypical Pokemon battle, at the end of all this chaos. With leech life hindering Mercury’s movements, he realizes doubling back to gain space would be a waste of energy.

It’s almost a relief to put Ahamkara back in her ball. Kepler falls to the ground, legs trembling, stumbling in the muddy, churned earth. “Strength and cunning, sure,” he mutters weakly, releasing Mercury and leaning against the Cinderace for a breather and to dry his skin from the latent heat of the rabbit’s body.

His head hurts, his skin hurts, his everything hurts. He faces Fenelle Miller , brow setting with determination.

So when the Unown-K manifests in front of his face, he pauses, but he doesn’t jump, to his credit. Eventually, he thinks, he’s going to get so used to running along the knife’s edge of a cardiac event that his heart will be immune to it.

His eyes track over the swathes of paper scattered across her desk-- silly, to make someone with the power of a god sign inventory reports and attend to personnel requisitions. The Meteno Deoxys core-- he recognizes it, having had it, once, breathe through his fingertips-- shines in the light, little more than a slightly foreboding paperweight, at this point.
