Last time he was here he scooped up a Shellos. Now Verglas descends on a Gastrodon, zipping around the thing, winding it up with confuse ray so that it smashes its own head against the sand.

“Heard,” he said, taking a small breath to ascertain the breathability of the atmosphere, before hopping off their chosen rocket to do just that: take samples. He had cameras on his forehead, chest, and the toes of his boots, working to capture everything in as much detail as possible.

“Do you think it’s, like… a breeding colony?” he asked, realizing they had no idea how these things reproduced or came to be. They certainly didn’t just appear full grown.

He walked among the little nosecones, finding them kinda cute, papping the smaller ones on their tips with an appreciative hand. Lulu appeared behind him and scared the be-Arceus out of him, breaking him from his reverie.

“I mean, it is kinda nice here. Peaceful.” And there was no war, no fighting, no internal turmoil over sides in a made-up conflict, like back home. He was about to agree with Lulu, that they could just live here, the two of them, ruling serenely over their little colony of Celesteela…

“...but I don’t have my heart meds,” he realized, in a quiet voice; just a soft splinter of a realization, the tiniest, hairline fracture in the bone, and through it, all of the realism flooded in. “Wait, what? What are we saying? We can’t fucking live up here, Lulu. It’s-- in fucking space. No, we need to go.”

He swapped Talon for his Beheeyem in a flash, and the little alien ensconced them in a rainbow-sheened protect, securing them to the Celesteela and protecting them from the elements as the beast wiggled free of the soil with thunderous noise and clouds of noxious fumes. Kepler shivered and pressed himself close to the rocketship, forcing himself to keep hsi eyes open, and watch, and see, despite the fear closing his throat.

His stomach did flip-flops as the Celesteela gained altitude. The moon came into sight, and grew ever closer.

The little pink Shellos was a starch contrast to the dark gray, black, and blue of the falls. It almost glowed in the faint light.

“NO I’M NOT FUCKING ALRIGHT,” he howls back at Mint, fingers clinging to his Metagross, breaking off tiny chunks of pthalo rock, soaked to the skin and dripping and diminished.

The waves roil and crash, Kyogre’s scream of anger echoing Kepler’s. “Go go go go up up up up!” he yells, and it’s like that painting of the ship on the ocean, the white foam rising, rising, rising, and Olympus rising, rising, rising.

“GO AWAY YOU STUPID WHALE!" Kepler shrieks, shrinking back from the edge of his Metagross as a spout of water shoots up hard enough to take his head off. Pluto flies in from somewhere, throwing up a protect bubble, but Olympus can’t move fast enough and all the water gets sucked into a tight spiral, writhing and raging, with Kepler in his little iridescent shield at the center of the typhoon.

Ash spent his entire life atoning for sins that were beyond his scope of capability. He simply wasn’t capable of the level of badness he felt he was-- so he suffered to make up for it.

Ash starts to cry again and Kepler looks up at him, concerned; then he says those stupid words and his heart does stupid things in his stupid chest.

“I’ll never forget,” he says-- simply, softly, reaching up and back to squeeze Ash’s shoulder. It’s a promise. He may not be the person he was-- may not be capable or ready to go there, again-- but he would never forget the importance of it, no matter how dreamlike it seemed at such distance.

As he began to click through hours of trailcam footage, he felt, for the first time in a long time, at a sort of peace.

The feeling of being on solid ground-- if the decreased, dusty gravity of the moon could be considered solid-- after having been moving through a vacuum made Kepler’s stomach lurch a bit. Like getting off a roller coaster, if his heart had allowed him to ride roller coasters.

Pluto stuck close to oscar clayton as everyone gathered their bearings.

“Me too, big guy, me too. Good job, everyone.” He gave a weak wave in Lulu Flint’s direction to thank her for the compliment, tempted to reach out and touch her arm but fought back into submission by years of bowing to his betters.

Lulu split off to try and establish communication with Sootopolis; Kepler went for a space suit, did a preliminary check to make sure all of his cameras (located in hands, boot toes, chest, and forehead) were recording, and headed for the airlock. “I’m gonna start taking measurements and samples.”

“Over-under on the moon being a gigantic egg,” he said, when Tempest Quinn suggested the Cresselia was protecting something. He sealed and depressurized the chamber, listening to the canned air whirr as it was recycled. Then, the door to the outside world opened.

“One small step for man, one giant leap, et cetera, et cetera.”
[break][break]
He went to step out onto the moon’s surface, misjudged the pull of gravity, and ended up in a very slow imitation of a long-jump. Pale dust lifted up when his feet touched the surface. He had to keep himself moving to avoid staring out at the vastness of space and having a panic attack.

“Time to see if this bitch is really made of cheese,” he said, bending to start taking soil (moondust? Moon soil?) samples. Callisto fluttered up behind him, psychically scanning the moon in small sections to record density and vague image-maps of what lay beneath its surface.

It both did and did not make sense that Kartana could speak in a human tongue. They weren’t, inherently, technological, or at least, not overtly. Unless... unless they ALL were? But, no. He'd seen the insides of a Nagandel. It wasn't mechanical. It was biological.

Lulu’s assertion that they had other fish to fry made him shake his head. “Right, right. To the moon, alice.”

The ground dipped low, falling in tiers to a wide valley. The tops of Celesteela pipped from the earth; some rumbled and shook, knocking away soil as they tried to break free.

“Hop on pop?” he suggested, approaching one wiggling tailfin.
