Look, Mars probably has a good reason for wanting to collect all the Unown in the history of the world. Everybody has a rationale for the crazy shit they do-- it’s the rationalizing that makes them crazy. Kepler doesn’t particularly give a hoot one way or the other, but if he didn’t seize the opportunity to take a childish shot at someone perceived to be his elder and better then, by God, he wouldn’t be Kepler Caiaphas Brueshaber.

“Judging by the grand history of known things,” Kepler says, watching with bored, half-lidded eyes as Mars’ Rapidash bodies an innocent Bronzong, “it will either be very good, or very bad. Or both.”

He’s a quantum physicist. His best grasp of things is at their basest level.

“Unlikely,” he counters Mars’ statement. “Everything has a purpose. We just don’t know what it is right now.”

There’s a squeaking noise that grows steadily louder as an errant Hatenna comes flying in over their heads. It lands, bouncing like a ball, and Mercury is there in an instant to send it skyward again with a double kick. He dribbles it like a soccer player for a few moments before Kepler shows mercy on the little, pink gnome and captures it in a Pokeball.

“Or,” he says, suddenly and out of the quiet, “it had a purpose, and no longer does. Vestigial organs. Creatures that helped develop and create the known universe have lost their priority in the ebbs and flows of existence.” He shrugs.

Kepler took a swig off his energy drink and tried to think of how it may have looked. Sure, she was a badass, but he was a greasy twig who just appeared out of nowhere and was now staring over her shoulder.

“Thanks,” he says, when she praises his catching prowess. Granted, Merc dropped the damn thing at his feet, like a housecat bringing home a mouse, but still. “Not too bad yourself,” he adds after her Joltik-- a very unassuming Pokemon-- easily downs a much larger wild Pokemon.

“Sure,” Kep says to the proffered walk, and the two fall in step down the gently declining hill-- though her own is much longer than his, given his height (or lack of).

“So,” he says, looking up at the orange-stained cumulous sky, “run out of butts to kick?” That’s what Rocket Beasts did, right? Kick butt? Take names?

There’s a clacking noise as an angry Crawdaunt runs across their path, with Mercury riding it cowboy style. Apparently, Kepler’s rabbit cannot stop causing mischief. He jumps up on the crawfish’s back, bouncing high, and then ground-pouding downwards, Mario-style, to bury the Crawdaunt’s star-topped head into the soil.

God, Kepler is. Okay, so, Kep is an amazing, brilliant, groundbreaking physicist, with a focus on quantum mechanics. He is also a grubby little shitgremlin who never leaves his lab and survives solely on energy drinks and Doordash. He’s rude, he’s obstinate, he loves to argue-- loves to argue-- and is so, ungodly messy, like, his lab is a disaster zone. But he’s brilliant, and has published numerous studies and articles on quantum mechanics.

He was recruited by Rocket recently (so HMU, Lulu Flint and every other science peepo, I wanna do his recruitment threads) and is literally just doing it because they pay him lots of money and occasionally listen to him.

Kepler blinks, thinking for a second in his screen-addled gaze that Lex has a big, yellow, hairy tumor hanging off the front of her chest-- but the little Joltik skitters to a different perch and he’s relieved to find it’s just a Pokemon. Phew.

She looks-- glares, really-- him up and down and he matches her bored expression with a baggy-eyed, half-lidded, too-damn-tired one of his own. “No,” he says flatly, taking a sip from his peach-flavored Bang, “just watchin' the sunset.” He lets the silence linger between them and looks pointedly past her, out at the sky, colored the same peach as his drink can.

There’s an undignified squawk and an undulating noise as a tan and brown rock comes flying towards them; it takes Kepler a few moments to realize it’s a shell, and it’s only when Mercury comes bounding after it to whack it again that he registers it’s a shell attached to a Pokemon. The poor Squirtle rebounds off a guardrail and comes spinning to a stop at Kep’s feet when the little blue turtle pops out and makes a sickened, groaning noise.

Kepler’s migraine hit with almost enough force to roll his eyes to the back of his skull, especially when he laid eyes on the damn Ludicolo. He narrowed his eyes at the ever jovial, sombrero clad pineapple.

The existence of the annoying pineapple’s exceptionally muscular human partner, however, deterred Kep from unleashing Mercury to demolish the singing fruit.

“Why?” he asked, tone wry and voice strained. “Why, god, must I be subjected to this hell?”

Venus, on the other hand, waved heartily to the newcomer and his exuberant Pokemon. They were so involved in their greeting they almost didn’t notice the shadow of the Dragalge looming over them; luckily, they turned at the last second, letting off a series of warning beeps. Kepler turned, too, and jumped with fright. “ARCEUS SHIT FUCK!” He scrambled for his dear life, tossing a Pokeball over his shoulder; his Fennekin, Mars, popped out of the beam of light, lifting her tiny head upwards at the large dragon.

Kepler ducked behind Spyro, using the large man as a shield. “Mars, use Psyshock!” he called from around Spyro’s waist.

Mars’ eyes glowered, and then the room was filled with pink energy and a strange, warping sizzle. The Dragalge was thrown backwards; Kepler launched an empty Pokeball to collect it.

Kepler pressed the pads of his fingers deep into his eyes to try and stave off the migraine lurking at the back of his brain. The constant roaring of the falls echoed the pulsing of blood in his head.

Kepler pauses, seemingly staring off into space as his mind works. “Aside from a childish obsession with completion?” he asks-- a question for a question, Martín-- before packing his books and papers back together in a haphazard pile.

Nearby, a tree rumbles and stretches its roots, rising out of the ground. Mercury quickly quells it with a flame charge, leaving large portions of its legs blackened and smoldering. Kep takes the time to look, at least, before hitting the smoking treant with a Pokeball.

He thinks of jayden cross and mint frost and their mysterious devices. Thinks on what they’ve told him, but also how cagey Rocket’s been about it, as a whole. He’s a scientist, for fuck’s sake; this kind of thing should be more available to him.

“I’d wager it’s just like any game,” he says after a moment, “collecting them gets you rewards.” He looks at Mars to deny or confirm.

Yeah, Mars probably saw the whole spectrum in Kep’s file. Lazy and prone to truancy. Disparaging remarks about superiors. But well and truly brilliant.

“Unown,” Kepler says, pulling out a stack of papers messily stapled together, “a Pokemon with 28 shapes-- 26 letters of the Latin Alphabet, the question mark, and the exclamation point. They are thin black lines with open eyes; the punctuation marks have half-open eyes.” The page he’s looking at has diagrams drawn of the Unown, complete with questionable cross-sections about their internal anatomy. “We don’t know if they pre-or-postdate written language, and if one is based on the other, or not.”

Flip. “When multiple Unown come together, they produce an odd power. Large numbers of them can be used to manipulate time and space itself. How exactly they do this is, haha, unknown.”

A nearby Golett is harassed by a bored Mercury, who downs the golem with a double kick. Kep lazily tosses a Pokeball in an arch over his head, not looking.

He looks up at Mars, making eye contact for the first time. “Do you want me to keep going?”

Kepler had a devotion to his research and study that caused him to stay indoors for long periods of time--- so long, in fact, it frequently bordered on hermit-like. He was one hour away from being a recluse when Mercury dragged his rolling computer chair away from the screen and basically forced him out the door. He hurriedly shoved his hair into a messy bun and pulled on a lab coat, stalking out into the wilderness beyond Sootopolis with an energy drink in had, looking like the quintessential Pokemaniac, just sans glasses.

He sees her red hair and for a moment mistakes it as part of the sunset; but he shakes his head and blinks the cobwebs from his brain, and is able to register there’s an actual human being standing in front of him. He knows of the Rocket Beast, of course-- he only partially lives under a rock-- but they’ve never met in person.

He doesn’t super want to intrude on her enjoying the sunset like a fucking creep but it’s not actually a bad view so he and Mercury sort of hover nearby until Lex notices them.’

Something lingers at the back of Kepler’s attention span, a nagging itch that he hasn’t the claws to scratch. All throughout his night as he stares at his computer screen until the wee hours of the morning when the sun begins to peek through the clouds; something vaguely important, like a test he forgot to study for, or a funeral he’s meant to go to, events of import that he cultivates nothing but apathy for.

He doesn’t sleep much as it is but he spends his day dozing and reading, dozing and reading. Raine’s sent him a handful of PDFs of star charts and measurements and whatever the fuck else she includes in her reports; he clicks through them with measured disinterest. He’s somewhere between his fifth energy drink and sixth nap when Mercury all but busts down the door to his lab and points to Kep’s phone with an irritated squeak. “Yeah, yeah, don’t get your panties in a bu-- oh, shit, that’s what I forgot.”

Not so much what, as who, and in a second Kepler’s tugging on jeans over his boxers and giving himself a brief sniff test before he’s out the door with a granola bar and an armful of books, some spiral-bound notepads all torn and marked to shit, and some big, heavy textbooks, dog-eared and well worn. Mercury shakes his head, grabs Kep’s computer, and hightails it behind him.

He finds Mars under a setting sun at the base of Mt. Pyre, near the destroyed part that some dumbass rangers dropped some time back; it hasn’t been repaired yet. Kepler takes in the view of the damages and idly wonders how many bodies were uprooted in the disaster.

“Sorry I’m late,” he says, not sounding sorry in the least, “I got caught up in research.” I didn’t want to come was the unspoken bit, but Kepler was nothing if not a giant fucking nerd, and it seemed Mars was, too. At least, he had the vibe of one, from their communication. That, or someone totally fucking obsessed. “So, Unown, huh?” Kepler asked, getting right down to business. He sat down in the dirt and laid his notebooks and textbooks out around him, beginning to shuffle through the chaos with the experience of someone who knew how to handle disorder. “Oh, I forgot my-- oh, thanks, Merc,” he said, as Mercury produced the laptop and mobile charger Kepler had rushed off without.
