Lex finds herself wandering Route 126, just outside of Sootopolis. For a moment she looks back, taking in the glittering lights of the seaside city as the setting sun slowly sinks across the horizon. The darkening sky burns with yellow, orange, and red hues. It makes for quite the stunning photograph, but Lex doesn’t pull out her phone to capture it. Instead, she lets herself experience it in silence, staying present in the moment.

For that moment, she’s a bit happy. Her thoughts don’t wander or spiral into the darker corners of her mind. Her worries still haunt her, but for now, they are kept at bay.

Kepler had a devotion to his research and study that caused him to stay indoors for long periods of time--- so long, in fact, it frequently bordered on hermit-like. He was one hour away from being a recluse when Mercury dragged his rolling computer chair away from the screen and basically forced him out the door. He hurriedly shoved his hair into a messy bun and pulled on a lab coat, stalking out into the wilderness beyond Sootopolis with an energy drink in had, looking like the quintessential Pokemaniac, just sans glasses.

He sees her red hair and for a moment mistakes it as part of the sunset; but he shakes his head and blinks the cobwebs from his brain, and is able to register there’s an actual human being standing in front of him. He knows of the Rocket Beast, of course-- he only partially lives under a rock-- but they’ve never met in person.

He doesn’t super want to intrude on her enjoying the sunset like a fucking creep but it’s not actually a bad view so he and Mercury sort of hover nearby until Lex notices them.’

The shuffle of footsteps behind her doesn’t go unnoticed despite not turning immediately to see who it is. After all, she always has something watching her back, hidden in the phantom realm. Plus, this is a popular spot to watch the sunset. Just look at that view.

It’s when the silene lingers and the presence grows heavier as it move closer does she finally turn slightly to see who it is. The Joltik clinging to her chest moves to her shoulder, all of its Compound Eyes blinking in turn at the man.

The way Lex’s amber gaze traces him up and down in judgment is not meant to be hidden. The thief keeps a rather stoic expression, “Can I help you?” she responds to his rather unimpressive “’Sup?”

Kepler blinks, thinking for a second in his screen-addled gaze that Lex has a big, yellow, hairy tumor hanging off the front of her chest-- but the little Joltik skitters to a different perch and he’s relieved to find it’s just a Pokemon. Phew.

She looks-- glares, really-- him up and down and he matches her bored expression with a baggy-eyed, half-lidded, too-damn-tired one of his own. “No,” he says flatly, taking a sip from his peach-flavored Bang, “just watchin' the sunset.” He lets the silence linger between them and looks pointedly past her, out at the sky, colored the same peach as his drink can.

There’s an undignified squawk and an undulating noise as a tan and brown rock comes flying towards them; it takes Kepler a few moments to realize it’s a shell, and it’s only when Mercury comes bounding after it to whack it again that he registers it’s a shell attached to a Pokemon. The poor Squirtle rebounds off a guardrail and comes spinning to a stop at Kep’s feet when the little blue turtle pops out and makes a sickened, groaning noise.

Kep raises one eyebrow and slides a Pokeball from his pocket to zap the thing.

“Hm,” she grunts softly at his response. Sure, other people could watch the sunset, she didn’t own the fucking hill. Still, something weighed on her, making her feel uncomfortable and anxious. But is that how she felt most of the time? Or maybe it was just the Squirtle . . .

The sudden appearance of the flying shell did surprise her. It wasn’t enough to make her jump but the Joltik that clung to her back did spring into action as it is trained to do. However, the little bunny beat her to it. The electric-type clicked her fangs in annoyance.

“Nice catch,” Blastoise were a nice tank if you liked water-types. Their mega-evolution was quite impressive too.

Meanwhile, the Joltik decided to take its frustration out on a passing Mismagius. The bug launched forward, firing off a paralyzing electrical current so the ghost couldn’t disappear back into the phantom plane, “Good shot, June,” Lex fires off her own pokeball to scoop up the phantom.

“I’m here to hunt for pokemon, care to take a walk?” misery loves company, after all.

Kepler took a swig off his energy drink and tried to think of how it may have looked. Sure, she was a badass, but he was a greasy twig who just appeared out of nowhere and was now staring over her shoulder.

Yeah, it was possible. Likely, even.

“Thanks,” he says, when she praises his catching prowess. Granted, Merc dropped the damn thing at his feet, like a housecat bringing home a mouse, but still. “Not too bad yourself,” he adds after her Joltik-- a very unassuming Pokemon-- easily downs a much larger wild Pokemon.

“Sure,” Kep says to the proffered walk, and the two fall in step down the gently declining hill-- though her own is much longer than his, given his height (or lack of).

“So,” he says, looking up at the orange-stained cumulous sky, “run out of butts to kick?” That’s what Rocket Beasts did, right? Kick butt? Take names?

There’s a clacking noise as an angry Crawdaunt runs across their path, with Mercury riding it cowboy style. Apparently, Kepler’s rabbit cannot stop causing mischief. He jumps up on the crawfish’s back, bouncing high, and then ground-pouding downwards, Mario-style, to bury the Crawdaunt’s star-topped head into the soil.

Lex only hitched her step briefly to swoop down and scoop up the pokeball containing the Mismagius before they continued on their way. She flashed him a small smile of thanks as a response to his praise. She held out an arm for the Joltik to crawl back up and settle on her shoulder again. The Joltik was her preferred partner pokemon for trips such as this. She was quite good and incapacitating wild pokemon (and people) long enough for Lex to do what needed to be done. She has avoided evolving the bug for so long due to its small size: Perfect for infiltrating the small spaces she couldn’t reach.

“Great,” her response to his acceptance was quite monotone, hard to read. She doesn’t address him again until he spoke. Then, she looked at him again with another frown, this time a hint of amusement in it, “Kicking butts? Is that all you think I do?”

It’s part of the job, yes, but she’s a bit more specialized than that.

Electricity sparks near her ear, causing her to flinch away, “Off,” she growled, not wanting to accidently fall victim to the Joltik’s ELECTROWEB. June jumped off her shoulder again, her focus on a sahdows area beneath a small tree.

The sticky web shot into the shadows, exposing the hiding Lampent for Lex to see. Being a ghost, she didn’t pass up the opportunity. That’s why she took this walk in the first place. She tossed a pokeball out towards the ghost-type, “What do you do?”

It was a weird thing, to be in awe of someone else’s movements. Kepler had spent his whole life trapped in a meat-sack that either felt several sizes too small or too long at any given time; he was prone to clumsiness, and had purple and blue patterned shins to prove it. His parents would never mention it, but he was a late-life walker, and even now occasionally had to check himself to make sure he was walking in a straight line.

The grace with which Lex swooped down and picked up that Pokeball-- such a minute, simple movement--

He looked away, scanning the open air as if something fascinating would materialize in front of them any second.

“Well,” he says, an undertone of glee weaving into his words. “Certainly not all.” Like any tool, she’s multifunctional. But every apparatus has a categorization. “I’m sure you bake great cookies and make lovely macramé.” He turns to her with a slight smile to show his jesting.

He felt the residual zappage of the Joltik’s electro web; the hair on that side of his head stood up on end.

A Marshtomp lulling in a nearby mud puddle stood up to watch them pass; Mercury was on it in a second, type disadvantage be damned. Two kick kicks to the football-shaped head rendered it flat on its back, and Kepler collected it soon after.

“I am a physicist,” Kepler said, unable to keep the jaunty, boyish joy out of his words. “A quantum physicist.” The bragging edge made it clear the addendum was included as a joke-- it wasn’t really meant to impress anyone. “A regular pencil pusher.”

If only his jesting wasn’t actually seeded in fact. As June scurried off into a shadowed area under the trees, Lex glanced back at Kepler with an amused grin, “I have been known to make some . . . potent brownies,” it’s likely rumors of the Admins gorging on some of her weed brownies had made it his way . . . or perhaps not. He seemed like the homebody type that didn’t get out much.

June quickly emerged, dragging a filled pokeball with the Mismagius in her little web. She stopped at Lex’s feet, carefully picking the sticky substance off the pokeball so her trainer should retrieve it, “Thanks,” she Beast muttered to the arachnid, patting her small head before she stood up to tuck the pokeball away.

A poor Tympole seemed to have been caught in the Joltik’s web. Bycatch. Lex had no interest in the water-type. Their evolutions were much too bulky and slow for her.

Quantum physicist? As if just being a physicist wasn’t impressive enough. Lex know absolutely nothing on the subject, even what made a Quantum Physicist different form just a regular Physicist. This is Lulu Flint and Killian Decker territory. To avoid embarrassment, she changes the subject entirely. Well . . . she would if she wasn’t hungry for information.

“And what does Rocket need with a Quantum Physicist?” the assumption he is part of the organization doesn’t require a big leap considering he knows of her rank within the organization.

Kepler couldn’t hold in the bite of laughter that escaped him at her description. Potent brownies. A sprinkling of water came dripping down on top of them as an odd-colored Horsea went flying overhead. “Oh, lots of things,” Kepler said, in answer to her question. “Right now I’m doing a lot of studying on multiverse theory.
