Life's a bitch, 'aint it?[break][break]

Well, for most it is. For some it's a dream. They sit in their comfortable homes, stuff their faces with decadent foods, and barely cast a sideways glance at the ones that cook it for them and clean up their messes. That's the dream though ain't it? Not give a flying fuck about whats going on around you becuase you can afford to pay others to think about it and just sip from the profits comfortably with clean hands.[break][break]

This is a story about one of those girls. No, not the comfortable, lazy ones sipping the fine wines. One of the people that cleaned the messes up for them. And Lex and cleaned up a lot of messes. She didn't want to, she had to. [break][break]

It started when her dad got mixed up with the wrong people in Goldenrod City. He was a professional gambler, much to her mother's distaste. The thrill of the ride was something Lex inherited from the deadbeat. She can't get enough of the heart-pounding adrenaline, the thrill fo the chase, and the pleasure a pile of money could bring. Lex's mother noticed that from an early age, but thanks Arceus for what seemed to be more self-control than her father. [break][break]

Lex was never exactly sure what happened to her dad. When she was 12, he just kinda disappeared just around the time her mother started working at the Goldenrod Casino. She didn't say much about it but Lex could tell she was incredibly unhappy and exhausted all the time. They us to watch movies, laugh, bake cookies, you know... the typical mother-daughter stuff. But once Goldenrod got their claws in her, she would just shuffle home, crawl into bed, and cry. She never cried in front of Lex but the girl could hear the muffled sobs through the thin walls. Being young and stupid, she didn't take the whole picture into consideration. Looking back on it now she could see clearly what happened. And it goes a little something like this:[break][break]

Mom is stuck paying dad's debt off by working for those "wrong people"[break][break]

But Lex was too young to understand. She thought he mother had given up on her, was purposefully ignoring her. She thought her dad leaving was her fault and her mother blamed her for it. Her mom was so lost in grief and misery that she didn't notice Lex spiraling out of control into a rebel phase that would shape the rest of her life. By the time Lex was 15 she too had started getting involved with the wrong people. Her boyfriend was 5 years older than her and a terrible influence, she dropped out of high school, got a few tattoos, started participating in some petty thievery (and was pretty damn good at it too). He spoiled her rotten as long as she did her part. It was through him she gradually obtained her partners in crime: First Aubie the Braviary, then Smoke, the Gastly, and finally Thorn, the Roselia. He gave her the praise, love, and admiration she wish her mother would. In fact, she barely saw her mother anymore. Between the long, back-breaking hours of work and the sleeping she basically raised herself. In fact, she hadn't seen her mother in months. It wasn't until some big thugs came knocking on the door that she gave it a second thought.[break][break]

Lex's mom hadn't shown up to work in a few days and the boss was pissed. She knocked on the bedroom door. No answer. She jiggled the locked handle. Wouldn't budge. One of those big thugs knocked down the wooden door and the stench took them all back. The thing in the room wasn't something Lex recognized. It was her mother, but it wasn't. She was frail, pale, and quivering beneath soiled blankets. If she paid more attention, maybe she would have noticed her mother's rapid decline. There was a sickness growing inside her, sucking her life away. Lex's heart broke. This was her fault. For the first time in years, Lex cried. She collapsed beside the bed, stripping off the sheets and gently turning the frail woman to lie on her back. The thugs left to report back and Lex's attitude took a 180. Lex cleaned her up, called a doctor, left her boyfriend and her criminal life. But it wasn't long until the thugs were back, insisting she take her mother's place at the casino. There as still debt to pay off. She had no choice but to take her mother's place.[break][break]

No wonder her mother was dying. The hours were exhausting, the work was exhausting and the pay was barely enough to put food on the table. Lex didn't last long on the casino floor as a waitress. The boss somehow found out about her past life and leveraged higher pay and better healthcare for her mother in exchange for her skills as a thief. It turns out her and her pokemon had built a little reputation for themselves. Lex couldn't say no. So for three years she did the dirty work for the fat cat sitting on his perch. The job ranged from subtle manipulation to message delivery to full blown heists. It paid considerably well. So much so that she was able to hire a full time nurse to care for her dying mom. But no medicine in the world could cure the cancer and eventually, she passed.[break][break]

Lex was heart broken. She regretted the time she didn't spend with her in her early teen years. She hated herself for not spending quality time with her now. But most of all, she hated her boss for what he did to her: forcing her to work off her pathetic father's debts and driving her to an early grave.[break][break]

Vengeance comes easy for those with nothing to lose. And Lex... she had nothing to lose. Not any more. So it wasn't a difficult decision to slip some incriminating evidence she stole from the boss' office about the Goldenrod Casino into the hands of the local police chief. It was enough to put that guy away for years and that's exactly what happened. But it wasn't long before another slime ball took his seat. Lex's sudden disappearance was clear evidence she was involved. It was an easy decision to put a hit out her, dead or alive. And it was an even easier decision for Lex to get the fuck out of Jhoto. She hopped on the first boat to Hoenn, praying she could get out of there and find some sort of refuge in a new region.[break][break]

To her surprise, she made it to Hoenn in one, very much alive, piece. But she soon learned constantly looking over her shoulder was an exhausting way to live. She needed security. So even if she was found, they couldn't touch her. But where was she supposed to find something like that?[break][break]
