Xiura tilted her head at , a little confused. "I have a fairly good sense of balance, I think. Anyway, I tried calling the Corviknight taxi business, but they said they weren't taking passengers tonight." She understood keeping the flying Pokemon safe in inclement weather was important, but she wasn't quite sure where to go from here. Maybe there was an inn nearby that might have an open room for the night.

Xiura glanced to the side at the Mantine beside , waving at the water-type Pokemon in greeting. If only she had a flying Pokemon on her team, then travel would be so much easier.

Then, the context of Klaus' question clicked in her mind. "Oh. Does your Mantine fly?"

Xiura beamed gratefully, taking Marshall's grip in her right hand and shaking it firmly.

"Nice to meet you, Marshall! I'd be very thankful for some tips. Do you take photographs as a hobby?" She latched the camera back onto the lanyard to secure it, stepping back so he could dismount from his bike.

"The Wooper habitat is this way, if you would follow me. Maybe we'll find some good action shots. And this is Bufo, by the way. He found the Woopers so quickly!"

Xiura and her Poliwrath led Marshall down a small path into the forest, between bushes and shrubs. It was a route she had discovered earlier with Bufo when he was looking for some water to dip in to stay hydrated.

Soon they came upon a large, natural pond, fed by rivulets of water that ostensibly came from a larger body of freshwater. Crouching behind some shrubs, Xiura pointed out a family of Woopers that bobbed up and down in the water, doing backflips off some rocks edging the pond.

"That's a perfect shot, I think!" Xiura whispered to Marshall with excitement. She raised the camera and aimed the lens at the blue Pokemon.

"PSY-Y-Y."

A large, clumsy Psyduck came rushing into the clearing, a Shellder latched onto his tail. "PSYDUCK!" he bellowed, diving into the water and making the Woopers scatter briefly.

Click!

Xiura blinked at the shot that developed on her screen.

"I..." she trailed off. Rather than a picturesque scene of playful Woopers, only a blurry streak of yellow could be seen on her camera.

She looked up at Marshall, perplexed.

Xiura looked up, flustered. Standing near her on a dirt bike was another person with a helmet on. She had been too caught up in her thoughts to even notice his arrival. "Oh! Hello, I'm fine. Just, er, a little frustrated." She stood up, dusting at her leggings and politely walking over to the dirt path so that they could converse in closer quarters.

She looked down at her digital camera reel again, explaining, "I've been looking for Woopers to take photos of, for that one contest that's been advertised all over the place. With the famous wildlife photographer and the famous wildlife magazine and the famous year's supply of poffins? I think I've just realized I'm way in over my head." She laughed a little, removing the camera from the lanyard around her neck and showing him the photos she had taken so far. Too much sun exposure, too much background, not enough... life for a wildlife photo.

"Not exactly the stuff of visionaries," she admitted freely. "I'm Xiura. You have a nice bike, by the way."

Shivering slightly from the dropping temperature, Xiura huddled under the awning of a cafe in Sootopolis city, quite a ways away from home. Her figurative well of creativity had been running a little on the dry side nowadays, and she knew from experience that the best way to refill it was to seek inspiration from other places and entrepreneurs. She had collected a good amount of ideas to bring back to her boba tea cafe, and she was excited to start experimenting.

However, fate evidently had other plans. Her mode of air travel back to Lilycove had been canceled due to the weather.

Suddenly, she noticed another person by the lake in the center of the city. Someone who looked familiar.

"Klaus?" she said. Glancing upward at the ominously gathering clouds, she hurried over to him. "Klaus! How are you?" Clutching her shawl more tightly around herself, she said, "You wouldn't happen to know a way back to Lilycove, would you?"

Xiura snapped a few test photos of the trees' outline against the very blue sky using her new digital camera. And then she took a few of her Poliwrath, Bufo. It couldn't be too difficult to take photos of Pokemon, right?

Well. She scrolled through the digital reel, wincing a little at the results. The pictures weren't bad, per se, but it was clear she had never taken a class on the subject of professional photography before.

Bufo, looking over her shoulder, waved his hands in the air excitedly. "They're all right, Bufo, and you look great as always, of course. But they're not good enough for a prestigious wildlife magazine."

Xiura sighed, sitting down on the grassy ground. They were near Route 124, outside Lilycove City, in search of opportune moments to catch wild Woopers in their natural habitat. A famous Pokemon wildlife photographer had announced a photography contest that went viral on social media, aiming to curate a "transcendent menagerie of the greatest wildlife photographs ever, encompassing the life, love, and laughter of the underappreciated Wooper."

Xiura normally wouldn't look twice at such a silly contest, but the rewards were too eye-catching to ignore. A year's supply of Pokemon poffins... And from a really nice bakery too! Her Pokemon would love them.

Xiura sighed, wistfully this time. Her years of flower-arranging and tea-making lessons in traditional Ecruteak felt like they fell far short of preparing her for the wide range of popular aesthetics in social media nowadays. She said to Bufo with some disheartenment, "Maybe I should have looked for someone to team up with. Someone with a vibrant sense of style and trendiness. Someone unafraid of the unorthodox."

Xiura held on again to Bufo, her Poliwrath, as they dove through the ocean's depths. Sorting through debris at the bottom was a tedius task, but finally her hands closed on something promising. They both rose to the surface, Xiura gasping for air.

As the Scizor was knocked prone and apparently unconscious by Gliscor's Earth Power, Xiura moved to shield her head from the falling debris. In a blink of purple light, Hatterene teleported to Xiura's side, gently helping her to her feet with the aid of her singular appendage.

"Thanks, Hatterene," Xiura said gratefully, catching her breath and dusting off her clothes.

She looked up just in time to see jab a knife into the stranger's neck. Xiura went still; she could feel her lungs freeze in her chest. Blood spurted from the wound, and the man fell, still. He was most certainly dead.


"Xiura, you and Hattrem will clean up." Her mother's icy tone brooked no argument. The bloody trail of a body being dragged from the room had stained the once-beautiful wood panels of the tea ceremony room.


Zev's cold voice reached her ears, and she turned attentively to him, the words spooling around like a thread in her mind as she struggled to process what he was saying.

"I was told an undercover cop was investigating the smuggling around here and to eliminate him if we encountered him. In any case, he saw our faces, so there was no other choice but to kill him."

She nodded, understanding. If she had stopped looking at the body on the ground, it was not that she was avoiding the sight. No, for the sputtering of another engine rose in the distance, coming closer, and warranted their undivided attention instead.

A quieting sense of calm flowing through her mind, she said, "Your actions were appropriate. Thank you. I hope we are paired again for other missions in the future." She smiled, and turned to meet the new guests, reciting the passphrase again, only once this time, before they answered.


With shaky hands, a bucket, and a rag, she and Hattrem spent hours cleaning the floor, even the cracks between the panels. By the end, her hands were shaking from exhaustion, not fear, and flakes of dried blood floated lazily in the bucket before the dirtied water was slung into the storm drain outside.

Xiura adjusted her floppy, overly large beach hat on her head, the peachy champagne hue complementing the violet-blue of her wind-tousled hair and the dusky rose and bright royal purple of her two-piece swimsuit. Fun frills at the neckline of the top complemented her decolletage and lent a flattering silhouette to her torso. A floaty, gauzy sarong of sheer raisin-black was tethered about her waist as well, asymmetrical in length and falling to her ankles.

"Hatterene, let's just have some fun with this!" Xiura said with a confidence she didn't entirely feel.

As though reading her mind, Hatterene chimed encouragingly before they stepped onto the long catwalk. Slight heels on her jewel-toned and champagne-leather sandals gave Xiura an iota of height and emphasized the healthy musculature of her calves as she glided down the walkway, recalling her Ecruteak lessons in grace and poise. Hatterene levitated at her side, dignified and collected as ever.

At the end, she and Hatterene twirled around in unison, Xiura's gossamer sarong swirling in the air. She laughed, the anxiety washing away as she posed with a large smile for the judging panel.

With Bufo her Poliwrath beside her, Xiura felt safe as she held her breath and they dove together beneath Slateport's calm waves. Xiura held on tightly to Bufo's back, watching streams of white bubbles rush by.

Slowly scooping through silt and sand, she searched for a Clamperl or two to bring to the surface. Her patient fingers finally uncovered something, and she rose to the surface, excited to see what she had found.

Xiura, lying flat on her Mantine, looked behind her to see a giant wave incoming. "Okay, let's do this!"

Quickly rising to a standing position, Xiura dropped her center of gravity by bending her knees a bit, arms out to either side for balance. Beneath, the Mantine cried in glee, swimming straight towards the cresting wave.

"Time for a Primarina Twist!" she laughed.

Clefairy bobbed up and down beside Xiura, waving two pom-poms to cheer her on. Xiura never really played catch with other kids before when she was younger, so she wasn't very confident in her aim. Nonetheless, she cocked back her arm and launched the ball at the target, hoping for the best.

Xiura couldn't help but feel a little disappointed at 's implication he might not like the offerings of her café, but was charmed by the mutually offered invitation to his Slateport-based bar.

"I'd love to stop by. I haven't been to Slateport in... Who knows how long? So it would be absolutely lovely to see the sights a little and have dinner! I've heard good things about the Slateport oceanic museum and the night market. What do you recommend for a tourist?"

Her phone's GPS spoke as they rounded another corner, stating they were arriving at their destination. They were closing in on Fortree City, but rather than traveling into the city proper, the GPS guided them onto a poorly lit off-road into the thick forest. The trees' limbs and leaves were encroaching on the road like a natural tunnel, the canopy blocking much of the night sky above.

Finally, they pulled up by a small, simple-looking warehouse surrounded by concrete grounds, but the concrete was scored with several tire marks, evidence of several other visitors that had come before and left. The warehouse had shuttered windows and the door was padlocked.

"Looks like we're here." Xiura slipped out of the car along with Zev, the pickup's headlights brightly shining to illuminate their path. Tapping her waist belt, she called Hatterene forth as a guard and guide.

"Hello?" she called out, unsure of whom to expect.

A man in dark clothing came out from behind the corner of the warehouse and gave them a small nod. A menacing Scizor was beside him, tense with vigilance.

She smiled in welcome. This was apparently the man they had to meet for the drop off. "A starving Noctowl flies at sunrise," she greeted unabashedly. She waited a few seconds for his response to the pass phrase.

But it never came.

The man perceptibly grew still, his mouth thinning into a narrow, displeased line.

Xiura glanced towards Zev in concern, then back to the stranger. She tried again, more slowly this time, "A starving Noctowl—"

"Freeze! Hands where I can see them," the man barked, rapidly waving his Pokémon into action. The Scizor launched forward, wings buzzing at top speed as he aimed for Xiura. She barely had time to take a breath before the bug Pokémon slammed into her, sweeping her off her feet and a fair distance away from Zev and Hatterene.

"You're all under arrest. Get on your knees and drop any weapons if you don't want your partner hurt."

Xiura was too shocked to even thrash about to escape her captor's hold, but she saw the telltale glow of Hatterene's eyes as the psychic Pokémon grew most upset over Xiura's abduction.
