Xiura grimaced as Kommo-o wavered and shook against the force of the Gardevoir’s Moonblast. Unfortunately, Kommo-o was particularly vulnerable to the Fairy-type move. Xiura had foolishly failed to consider that the Gardevoir would attack her Pokemon with such a strong move, in lieu of a Psychic-type attack.

Even so, Xiura looked at Aurelie in surprise as she recommended that they retreat. She hadn’t expected her friend to bring it up first of the two of them, but considering the situation, Xiura certainly agreed. She really didn’t want to hurt Jack or his Pokemon, but it seemed like he was ready to hurt them! Beedrill being the first example. She nodded at Aurelie. “Protect!” she called to Kommo-o, who threw up a translucent shield to ward against further attacks and cover their retreat.

With that, Xiura hightailed out of there with Aurelie, calling to their Pokemon to follow after. When they were a few meters off, Xiura held up her Pokeball, summoning back her Kommo-o before he could be overwhelmed by the sheer number of Fairy-type attacks that might come their way.

It was just such poor luck that Jack had been the one Ranger to cross their path while they were on this mission.

Where the Yellow Sun Rises [M]

This ranger outpost on Route 120 was rather intriguing, Xiura thought, a watchtower adjoining a smaller building that seemed a little out of place amidst the deciduous trees and conifers of the mountains. It was early--perhaps too much so, because the lights in the building were still dim. She knocked anyway, politely but firmly, hoping someone was awake.

Then Xiura set her pack down and huddled down against the cold bite of morning to wait for jack wainwright or the resident of the Ranger outpost to emerge in the autumn morning.

"Incineroar," she asked, muffled into her scarf. Her fiery feline Pokemon huddled down, too, his back against her, radiating warmth like a space heater. "Thank you," she said. He grumbled in response.
[break][break]
But she had not waited five minutes until someone opened the door, yawning and shivering.
[break][break]
"Hello! Good morning! You must be the escorts..." The bushy-bearded man in a lab coat looked around past Xiura and Incineroar. "Oh, I was expecting, er, someone else. You sound very different on the phone," he said affably.

Xiura grinned, though most of it was covered by her scarf. "That was Jack. I'm Xiura, his partner for this trip."
[break][break]
"I see!" the man said. "I'm Professor Cinnamon. Welcome, and please come inside. It's cold out!"
[break][break]
Xiura said, "Yes, very," and gratefully stepped inside, Incineroar looking like he couldn't care less whether he was indoors or out.

A Castform drifted to and fro across the makeshift lab inside the building, periodically changing from a rainy cloud to a bright sun to a snowy cloud. Each iteration of its weather-themed form merrily tormented a hardy succulent plant sitting in the corner.

"It's fake. The plant," Professor Cinnamon stage-whispered to Xiura and Incineroar. Xiura smiled politely and nodded, unsure how to respond.
[break][break]
"I've stayed up here for two years now. It gets cold so early in the autumn because of the altitude. But from here, the sunrise is absolutely beautiful," the professor remarked, looking out the window to the east.

"I'm sure it is," Xiura said as she looked too, wondering if Jack would arrive soon.

Sea: Melody Vs. Xiura [RT]

“Oh no,” Xiura muttered behind clasped hands over her mouth as she saw Melody’s phone fall into the water. Now she was really dead in the water if Melody caught her! Surrender wasn’t an option at this point; she needed to run or find her way to the mission point. She couldn’t face an Elite Four member head-on and win. Her mind raced through the options. Going out to sea would tire Milotic and give her more of a disadvantage with fewer routes for escape. Her only chance was the shore. Melody was between her and the island, however; Xiura's position in this battle was far from ideal. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean for that to happen!" She didn't think her apology would hold much weight, considering the situation.

Milotic cried out in pain as the ice trail whipped against its body, the frozen shards scraping its scaled hide. Xiura winced, saying, “Milotic, use Dragon Tail!” She needed to fight for now.

Milotic rushed aggressively towards the Lapras, trying to knock it over with her broad, heavy tail, then Milotic briefly dove under the surface, speeding off in a direction towards the rocks, putting more distance between herself and Melody.

Xiura agreed, “I do like the idea of the honorable greeting before the ‘fight’ begins.” She looked over Aurelie’s shoulder as she jotted down notes on the paper.

Incineroar in the meantime was subtly flexing and prowling around on the other side of the room, his helm glittering in the studio’s light as Aurelie and Xiura searched through the music selection on the CD. As the music selection slowed in tempo and and picked up in volume, Incineroar looked up with interest. He approached the Litten, looking at him consideringly, before leaping back and forth on all fours in time with the drums, like a giant predator approaching and intimidating an opponent of equal power and ability. His feline movements were abnormally careful and poised, however, ensuring he did not crush or truly threaten the smaller Pokemon.

“I think Incineroar likes this one too,” Xiura whispered to Aurelie, with a small, subtle gesture at their two Pokemon. She didn’t want to distract Incineroar from his burst of inspiration. “I think he’s turning into a bit of a choreographer himself!”

She watched as Incineroar and the Litten prowled around each other. Incineroar sprang back with a mighty leap to the edge of the room, his back against the mirrors. “Roar!” he bellowed, then glanced surreptitiously at the two women as though only remembering they were there. He sniffed, then flexed, the moment broken.

“Okay, okay, how about with this?” Xiura picked up a false foam saber from the costume box, trotting over to Incineroar and handing it to him to hold in his mouth. “That way, you can use your paws to leap back and forth during the dance, and slash at the air with the sword. We’ll make a better one, don’t worry,” she reassured at his dubious look at the pink-and-blue foam sword. Pacified, Incineroar put the hilt in his mouth. It was certainly a comical sight, but Xiura didn't dare laugh.

She looked into the box again and found a red-and-yellow foam saber as well, offering it to Aurelie and her Litten. “Would you like to practice?” she asked, grinning.

Xiura stared at the fleeing Megalopolans in the midst of the space-time distortion, her Kommo-o standing before her with battle fury still blazing in her eyes. Then, she looked at jack wainwright and Aurelie Lefevre, the latter of whom was recovering from the snapped toxic chain that had ensnared her. If they let the Megalopolans stay here, there was a good chance that Hoenn and her dear friends would be endangered quite quickly again. Xiura didn't want that to happen.

"After them! Help the bear!" she called out to her Pokemon, who eagerly followed her command with whip-like speed, her gleaming scales reverberating with cymbal-like sounds.

Kommo-o ran up to the Ursaluna, throwing off Megalopolans and pinning them to the ground with CLOSE COMBAT, doing her best to incapacitate the horde.

Xiura too bit into a s'more, the chocolate melting in her mouth in silky. decadent warmth. She hummed happily, saying, "I'd love to learn some Kalosian recipes! You know, I've never been great at macarons, although sweets tend to be my cup of tea." She grinned at her own joke, then glanced again in the direction of her Pokemon.

"That's too far, Bufo and Cherubi! Come back!" she called. The pair obediently returned, dawdling around the campfire and collecting some s'mores to eat together. Xiura kept a watchful eye on them even as Aurelie set out the feast of breads and spreads.

"This is amazing, Aurelie!" Xiura gushed, picking out a baguette slice and spreading some honey butter and blackberry jam on it. "I know my stomach isn't big enough, but I want to eat everything." Before feeding himself, Bufo carefully spread some honey butter on crusty, crackling baguette bread for Cherubi, who tucked in with obvious delight.

"I don't know if it's an equal match to your entrees, Aurelie," Xiura said, "But I've brought some hot barley tea for the main course, and milk tea for the dessert." She smiled, setting out a couple of thermoses, pouring the clear, wheat-brown barley tea into enough plastic cups for the two women and their Pokemon companions.

Xiura took a deep draught of the tea, breathing in the aromatic steam, before sighing. "The bonfire party! It's been so long. Maybe we should organize another in Lilycove and invite everyone." She smiled at Aurelie. "Jack's been so lovely." She looked down and blushed, thinking of his warm, kind, and courageous demeanor. "It's really rare to meet someone like him."

Xiura paused, feeling something a little sad and wistful arise within her. "How... how did you two end up falling for each other?" she asked curiously.

"Alola!" Xiura said. "I'd love to visit sometime. I've never been to an observatory. And I bet the beaches are beautiful." She took a moment to think, some distant memory tickling at the edge of her brain, and a flash of recognition crossed her features.

"We were in the swimsuit contest together!" she exclaimed. "If I remember correctly, you performed really well!" She beamed. "It feels like so long ago, but it was a lot of fun."

Kingler clacked its pincers, the spirit of competition blazing in its beady eyes. It form-tackled the Starmie, the two rolling around in the rhythmic waves, sweeping and crashing around the wooden beams.

"Bubble tea," Xiura contemplated aloud. "It's a sweet drink with a tea base. So while tea can be bitter, a lot of bubble tea drinks tend to be sweeter based on the person's preference. It's pretty trendy because of the variety of toppings you can add, like with frozen yogurt or ice cream. But it's a refreshing drink instead. Sort of like... an iced coffee. But with more variety. The flavor of tea can be subtle compared to coffee, so it makes a great base."

"If you ever happen to be in Lilycove, come stop by! Even if I'm not there during the day, my Clefairy is usually there to take orders."

“I wouldn’t call myself a chronic napper, but I know one very well,” Xiura responded, thinking of her Incineroar lounging in the sunlight streaming through the front window of her boba cafe.

What she wouldn’t give to be there right now, she thought as Hatterene lay unconscious in the sand. She apologized silently to her Pokemon companion, falling to her knees in the sand beside her, then looked up to see Psyduck struck unconscious by her Sableye.
[break][break]
Her position was parallel to the League trainer’s, cradling his Psyduck in his lap. She looked at the Toxtricity and Sableye in turn, gauging their relative exertion levels. They seemed about equal; if she chose to go on, then it was a distinct possibility she’d have two unconscious Pokemon to nurse back to health instead of one. She looked down at Hatterene’s battered face, reaching out to wipe away some of the poisonous gunk from her shoulder.

“How about a truce?” Xiura called out, her tone friendly but strained. She and Sableye sat down by Hatterene, eyeing the other trainer with watchful vigilance in case they made any aggressive movements.

Unfortunately, the trials and tribulations of the day and many days past soon became evident as she and Sableye fell into a light doze, there on the sands of the beach. In the sleep-addled haze of her periphery, she thought she saw the other trainer slumbering as well.

When she awoke, the other trainer was no longer there. Xiura could only imagine the picture they must have made, twin unconscious figures on the beach, an oasis-like interlude of peace in the middle of the island war.

“Ah, my mistake,” Xiura apologized, smiling, her hand going up to tuck a piece of her hair behind her ear, only to remember it was underneath her swim cap. A member of the Elite Four? She should have paid more attention to media; how did this escape her notice? She was in even deeper trouble than she thought.
