”Maybe you’re right. Maybe I don’t know you at all.” Tam responds, his tone seemingly back to its usual lull. There’s something there that can’t quite be placed; an emotion not even Tam would know to recognize in himself.

”But I want to.” He thinks. ”And I don’t want you to become something you would hate.”

For once, he keeps his thoughts to himself, his gaze being pulled away from Orion just as the Gardevoir falls in defence of her trainer. Blood. Pain. Death. It’s a shame. How many pokémon will have to die because of the ideals of Team Rocket?

Of course, Tam has no idea what this Gardevoir had done to Orion and his Silvally. He’s really missing a lot of the context here. In the end, Orion’s right: he really doesn’t know him at all.

What Tam does know is that Chu-e Choi’s surrender means there’s nothing that could legally justify the use of lethal force.

There’s a heavy sigh, but he still feels no relief at all.
[break][break]
He doesn’t give Orion a response. He sees the tears, he sees the way his hands shake, and he sees the pain. He does nothing at all about any of these things. What can he do, anyway? Nothing he could say or do would fix things. He doesn’t know what Orion is going through, he doesn’t understand it, and as such, he can’t make things better. Tam is deeply aware of this at that moment, just as he’s aware of the fact that Orion probably hates him for stopping him.

He tries not to think about that.

Blissey is called back, releasing his Lycanroc and Klefki in its place. Walking over to the unconscious man, Tam instructs the Lycanroc to dig a grave for the Gardevoir – he had been forced to leave his Togekiss’ body behind after facing Zev Harcourt, and in their death, no pokémon deserves that. The Klefki acts as handcuffs, FAIRY LOCK in place. Tam has no choice but to pick this stranger up, carrying him over his shoulder now that he’s meant to be apprehended.

Orion Lykos is not a murderer, Tam knows as much. Yet here, when facing the person who had caused him so much suffering, who had taken so much from him, it’s obvious that revenge and murder are the only things in his mind.

Most people would back off, either due to agreeing with Orion’s sentiment or due to the discomfort of arguing with a victim about their aggressor. Unfortunately for Orion, Tam is not most people.

”No, Orion.” Cold, sharp, and angered. Blue eyes fix on him and him alone, the battle momentarily being ignored. ”If you do that, you’ll be just like them. We don’t kill. Capture him and bring him to justice, you know that’s what you should do.”

But is it the right thing to do?
[break][break]
It’s not sympathy for Chu-e Choi. It’s not some display of righteousness. It’s the simple fact that Tam doesn’t want to see Orion do something he might regret forever. Taking a life is a grievous act; it’s something most people would never even think of doing. It marks someone, taints them, and forever changes them. There’s no going back after such an act; it forever marks them.

Tam doesn’t want to see Orion become that, but he had also seen the crystals on Chu-e Choi’s skin. Is aiming to kill the only way to deal with an enemy avatar?

His gaze remains fixed on Orion Lykos.

Why does all this matter so much to him? It really should. He shouldn't care if this criminal dies or lives. Under different circumstances, he wouldn't.

Bloodlust has never suited Tam. Even now, after having seen his Togekiss fall, and with the scent of blood lingering in the air amongst dust and snow, it’s not revenge that he seeks. What is it, then? To bring down a dangerous criminal, perhaps? To bring him to justice? To prevent more pokémon from dying?

The command telling Lily to repeat her attack rests at the tip of his tongue, a sharp and cold ”Again!” almost spoken. The sound of Caleb Harcourt’s voice interrupts him at the last second.

What is he doing here? Why is he acting like he knows this person?

Sky blue eyes narrow when looking at the cadet, and at the same time, the Tyranitar lets out a rumbling growl, watching Zev Harcourt and his Cofagrigus.

A decision is quickly made.

”Fine, but don’t do anything stupid, Caleb.”
[break][break]
He decides to trust.
[break][break]
Lily is called back to her pokéball’s confines, and with one final look at the masked stranger, Tam rushes back to the theatre, leaving his fallen Togekiss behind beneath snow and sand alike. There’s a lot left for him to do and too many Rockets that are probably already making their way into the theatre.

Specks of sand mingle with snowflakes when the AVALANCHE falls upon them. Even through it, the SANDSTORM rages on, buffeting all it touches while simultaneously increasing the Tyranitar’s own defences. Lily shakes the snow off, unscathed, but having caused harm to the ghost clearly does little to diminish her anger.

When the Cofagrigus appears and PROTECTS itself, there’s a low snarl. Back spikes raised as if hackles vibrate with the guttural sound, and even though she knows well that such a barrier might just be impenetrable right now, she still readies an attack.

A mega stone can be seen on the ring around her tail, but it will remain unused unless Tam commands otherwise. The command the ranger captain gives is much different:

”Swing.”
[break][break]
A savage attack that will strike everything in her path. The pokémon may be able to protect itself, but can it protect its trainer at the same time?
[break][break]
Lily roars, responding to the command. Just as Tam steps out of her path, she charges forward, and with a BRUTAL SWING of her tail, she aims for both the Cofagrigus and Zev Harcourt alike.

Tam has had enough.

Tam is not oblivious enough not to notice the excitement in both Orion’s expression and tone (even if it may only be because he’s actually learning to read him after spending so much time with him), but in true Tam nature, he simply assumes that this is excitement is there because of the movies they’ll be watching.

Sky blue eyes fall upon the pokémon, both the ever so cautious Silvally and the Absol who always accompanies Orion. Honest and blunt as Tam may be, this time he chooses to keep the full extent of the truth to himself for the sake of not ruining Orion’s excitement.

”Hmm… Depends on what you have in mind, I guess.”

He has never watched a horror movie and liked it. He doesn’t say that much.

”Surprised you didn’t watch them all during the month already.” Flat as Tam’s tone may be, he’s teasing. He knows how much Orion likes Halloween.

He will never understand it. Not really. He can act as if he does, he can make an attempt, but the truth is that Tam has never wanted revenge against anyone. He has been angry, he has grieved, and he has wished for things to be different, but none of those feelings have ever resulted in hating someone for it. Does Orion mean revenge against all of Team Rocket or had this person in particular done something to him?

Tam would ask, but the sudden burst of a mega evolution draws his attention back to the fight. This might get rough. The Lopunny hits his Lycanroc with a barrage of slaps, sealing the attack with a kiss. Is that some sort of Z-Move? Tam can only assume as much, given Procyon’s reluctance to attack once it is done.

That reluctance only lasts a second, though.
[break][break]
Cassiopeia shines a SPOTLIGHT upon the man Orion had been pursuing, and the Lycanroc’s attention immediately turns towards him. Sharp fangs glisten under the light, Procyon’s menacing snarling ringing loud and clear. The wolf leaps, intending to attack…

”Dammit, Orion!” It’s in a hurry that Procyon is called back to the safety of a pokéball’s confines, preventing him from causing any harm. To think his pokémon had almost been forced to attack a person…Tam snaps. ”Is this really what you want?!”
[break][break]
To hurt someone? To kill them?
[break][break]
”Do you really want to be just like them?”
[break][break]
A hand hovers over the pokéballs clipped to his belt, a choice being made. What is the right choice to make? He won’t have his pokémon attack, but it also wouldn’t be right to shield a potential criminal…

Thankfully, Tam is an experienced enough trainer to know which moves won't be too affected by the SPOTLIGHT, and it’s his Blissey that he decides to release. Gloved hands are clenched into fists.

”...Heal.”
[break][break]
Mochi does no more than glance at the stranger before turning her attention back to her allies. She casts the healing waters of her LIFE DEW onto the Decidueye and Silvally, helping relieve any harm they had suffered during their time in Littleroot Town.

He hadn’t really had plans for the night, and to someone like Tam, that’s just fine. Yet, when Orion Lykos’s text had been read a few minutes after it arrived, the response had been written easily: simple and to the point, just like most of Tam’s messages.

He probably should have asked what kind of movie they would be watching, but this doesn’t occur to him – not even during the short journey from Slateport to the outskirts of Verdanturf Town, nor by the time he finds himself knocking on the front door of Orion’s house.

”Hey. I brought popcorn.” Is all the captain says as a greeting, bag of popcorn in hand.
[break][break]
Spending his evenings alone is usually perfectly fine to him, he has never minded solitude, but sometimes things like these can be nice too, perhaps if only because he likes Orion’s company.

This too he had come to expect, for it would have been foolish to think his authority would always be respected in the heat of battle – it’s obvious the only thing Orion will listen to right now is his own hatred. Who is this person? Is this how Orion acts with any Rocket that crosses his path or is there more to all of this? Had bringing him to Littleroot been a mistake on Tam’s part?

The weight of his own choices falls heavy upon him, and yet his next choice is also what he’d expect from himself: two against one hardly seems fair, he can’t leave Orion to fight alone.

”...Go.” One simple command is all it takes for the growling Lycanroc to break its defensive stance and jump forward. It dashes across the field towards the Lopunny, sharp CLAWS intending to both cause harm and weaken.

Tam himself steps closer to Orion, yet his gaze is now on the man whose shadow has been SHACKLED by the Decidueye.

”Orion, what are you doing?”

His tone is calm, unemotional.

To a degree, he had known it would come to this: that the squad would be scattered, that their pokémon might die in battle, and that if they didn’t manage to stop Team Rocket, the consequences would be much worse than that.

The Lycanroc’s HOWL rings through Littleroot Town – loud and full of sorrow. His Togekiss had fallen and Tam had been left with no choice but to leave its broken body behind, hoping that Caleb Harcourt’s pokémon wouldn’t suffer the same fate it had. Caleb had wanted to face the masked criminal (Zev Harcourt) alone, and Tam, knowing that this could likely be a distraction and that many others likely had their sights on the theatre, had decided to trust in the cadet as he had many times before.

The next distraction is one much different.

It’s the sound of Orion Lykos calling for an attack.
[break][break]
Tam is not the sort of person to hesitate, and at that moment, a decision is quickly made. On their way back to the theatre, they veer away from their intended course – his Lycanroc guiding him in the direction the sound had come from.

”ORION.”
[break][break]
What the hell is he doing? Why is he going after someone who seems to be fleeing? Does he intend to arrest Chu-e Choi, or…
[break][break]
Tam knows Orion. He knows of Orion’s hatred for Team Rocket. He had warned the squad not to act recklessly because he knows that hatred to be blinding.
[break][break]
The shinning Lycanroc growls, its bright gaze fixed on their opponent, yet blue eyes meet green ones instead, questioning.

The crunching and snapping of bones is rendered inaudible by the sound of the raging SANDSTORM, and yet, even if he can’t hear it, Tam knows what kind of damage to expect after witnessing his Togekiss’ dive. He frowns, and then, when seeing glittering specks amongst the sand, he takes a deep breath.

It’s never easy, is it?

”I’m sorry, Flapjack.”
[break][break]
Weakened and pained, the Togekiss also suffers due to its own attack. Blood pours out of wounds that the dragon keeps on mercilessly digging its fangs into, red staining the soil of Littleroot Town. Without the strength to even attempt to free itself, the Jubilee Pokémon does the only thing it can do: its wings flap helplessly one last time, and with a cry of agony, a FAIRY WIND is summoned to mingle with the SANDSTORM called forth by the Tyranitar.

It’s with rage that Lily responds to the Togekiss’ pain, her roaring louder than ever. She approaches the Cofagrigus one more time, and although the DARK PULSE stings and is enough to cause her to pause, it also seems to increase the Tyranitar’s anger.

There’s a sudden chill, the air becoming gelid.
[break][break]
”LILY!” Tam warms, but it’s too late.
[break][break]
An AVALANCHE falls upon them.

”Hm?” It is indeed a typical patrol to the ranger, to the point that the question results to be unexpected. There’s nothing particularly impressive about all this from his perspective: farmlands are calm, and patrolling areas like these is what Tam considers to be some of the more relaxing parts of his job. ”Yeah, I guess so. There’s not much to it, really.”

He doesn’t think so, at least, but then again, Tam became a ranger right after graduating high school. It may have been in Unova and not Hoenn, but this is the life he knows.

And so is that they patrol, but the day proves to be all too uneventful. His pokémon circle the area, the Wooloo graze the fields, and in the distance, a breeze causes a scarecrow to sway lightly. Peaceful.
