It’s not a particularly large yard. Not at all, actually. There’s only a few deciduous trees, and yet by the time autumn comes, the ground always seems to end up completely covered in fallen leaves.

Yellow, orange, maroon, and even crimson red… A plethora of colours greets the Ranger Captain steps out of his home, clad in sweatpants with a leaf rake in hand. Most people would think the coastal winds are to blame for carrying with them leaves from nearby trees, and while this may be part of the truth, Tam’s sky blue gaze falls upon a different culprit.

”It’s that time of the year again, huh?”

The Sawsbuck, proud and tall, stares at him, chewing on a leaf from one of the berry bushes. It moves its head, gently shaking its antlers, and when it does as much, a couple of crimson leaves fall from the abundance that grows on them.

Jubilee and Brutal Pokémon meet in midair, draconic fangs biting through feather and flesh to take hold. The Togekiss lets out a pained cry, but she does not have the time to attempt to break away before the point-blank HYPER VOICE dulls her senses. Drops of her blood mingle with the sandstorm.

The next attack on her part is blind and desperate, but it is effective. While the Hydreigon still takes hold, she pushes downwards and against it, EXTREME SPEED suddenly being used to torpedo down to the ground.

The Tyranitar charges as well at that very moment, BULLDOZING the Coffin Pokémon.

Tam’s eyes narrow. Familiar with Cofagrigus as he is, he knows doing this will cause Lily’s ability to change momentarily, but that does not matter when the SANDSTORM is already raging. The Togekiss’ situation is more of a problem.

It could be worse.

The ranger captain watches the actions of the criminal, paying careful attention to his pokémon choices. He doesn’t bother with threats, snarky comments, or even flashy poses. He simply stands his ground, calm as ever when reaching for one of the green pokéballs at his belt…

In heavy contrast with her trainer’s demeanour, the roar of the Tyranitar that is then released reverberates through the ground and trees alike, calling forth a gust. The SANDSTORM created by her SAND STREAM is a powerful one. It becomes difficult to see what’s happening in its midst, and it's both pokémon and trainers alike that are buffeted by its debris. Only the Tyranitar is unaffected by it.

Used to this sort of battle conditions, Tam takes a step back and away from where the raging storm is the strongest, knowing that somewhere within it, his Togekiss is flying down to attack in response to the signal he had given it. From up above, it’s an AURA SPHERE that the Jubilee Pokémon aims towards the Hydreigon.

The Tyranitar growls menacingly, yet she too chooses to PROTECT... for now.

It’s quickly that things become chaotic, but is that not what they had expected from the very beginning? There’s people all around, and it becomes unclear who are their allies and who are their enemies. Especially after a SLUGE BOMB falls upon them. Good thing he had had Blissey SAFEGUARD them all.

”Try to keep Rocket out of the theatre.” Tam tells Orion Lykos, Caleb Harcourt, Hailee Jacobs, Noah Camus, and even wren rourke, who receives a nod in acknowledgement when explaining he’s one of Ever Grande’s rangers. ”I’ll go check the back.”

With that said, it’s his Togekiss that’s released then, Tam giving his squad one final look before heading towards the back entrance to the building.

It’s there that he witnesses Zev Harcourt stepping out of his Cofagrigus.

”Ugh, fucking edgelords.” Tam sighs, already feeling like he needs another cigarette.

Yet, their EYES LOCK, blue on blue, and it’s at that moment that he signals for the Jubilee Pokémon that flies overhead.

He looks at her, and while some people would perhaps be intimidated by Elite Four herself and the tall Ultra Beast by her side, his expression remains neutral. Tam may just be too impassive for his own good.

”Hm. It sounded like you wanted to have a better look, but I guess not.” He shrugs, and it’s then that police sirens interrupt their conversation.

He could offer to be the one to stay and give the report on what happened, but honestly, that sounds annoying, like too much work, and also like a waste of his time. So, he decides to act before Katherine can beat him to the punch:

”Eh… Figured it might be something along the lines of ‘If we can’t take their supplies then let’s destroy them ‘cause fuck the League’ or something.” He shrugs yet again. ”Dunno. I’m not a criminal, no clue how they think, but I do know that that’s no accidental fire.”

Not with how quickly the supplies had gone up in flames, and also given that there’s no clear point of origin. Sure, some pokémon may have happened to accidentally use some really powerful fire move in the vicinity, that’s always a possibility, but Tam has his doubts. He’s been dealing with too many Rocket-related crimes recently.

Then again, Katherine also has a point.

Kyle wavers, because of course he does, and naturally, as should only be expected, Tam gives him the most blank stare in the history of blank stares. Then, he sighs.

It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy that he doesn’t even get to finish saying out loud.

The Furfrou bares its fangs and jumps, clearly aiming to bite the ranger captain. Almost as if by instinct alone, Tam ducks in response, aiming to tackle the pokémon down to the ground. Man and canine roll on the harbour’s concrete, and although the Furfrou whines, Tam takes care not to actually harm it – merely stopping it from biting or taking off. He holds it down, an arm going under its chest while the other wraps around its neck, restraining it. Hell, once its all done, he event pets it... after another sigh, obviously.

All rangers should know how to deal with aggressive wild pokémon without the aid of any of their team, no?

If anything, he’s lucky that it’s not a pokémon that knows moves that are more difficult to deal with.

Tam is admittedly a little confused by her remark there, but within a second or two he makes the decision that he simply doesn’t care enough to question Katherine Fairburne’s words. He takes them for what they are and moves on. After all, he has always preferred it when things are simple.

The firemen are late, apparently, but between his Gyarados and Katherine’s Pheromosa, the situation should be handled in no time. Ultra Beasts really are a sight to see, huh? The only one Tam had seen working for a trainer before had been Raziel Beckett’s Buzzhole, and Pheromosa is like its complete opposite. Even he thinks they’re kind of cool.

”Oh yeah… Rocket. It doesn’t look like an accidental fire because of the way it’s burning, you know? Figured they might be behind it, since they’ve been damaging and stealing supplies lately.”

He should be patrolling the Granite Cave primal point. It’s where the Slateport Rangers had been assigned. Of course there had been a change of plans. Of course Team Rocket had chosen to take advantage of the potential end of the world and attack. Fucking typical.

Tam had divided his forces. Some had been assigned to remain at Granite Cave, some are helping with evacuations at Slateport, and he… he is here with a handful of his rangers.

It’s while blowing out smoke that the ranger captain’s impassive blue gaze wanders over the small town. He listens to Elinor Anderson’s speech, recognizing her voice from the ranger meeting (she sounds better when she’s not pissed). Tam waits until she’s done, and discarding the remnants of his cigarette, he steps on it before clicking a button on his radio to takeover the comms:

”This is Ranger Captain Fawley, we’ll patrol near the theatre. Priority is safety, preventing property damage, and securing the primal point... Looks like there’s kids still in the area? Someone take them to safety before they get in the way of the fighting. Over.”

With that said and done, he turns to his team: Orion Lykos, Caleb Harcourt, Hailee Jacobs, and Noah Camus.

”Littleroot Theatre is where the tree appeared a couple of years ago. If I had to take a guess, that’s where Team Rocket will start looking for the energy source mentioned in the reports.”

It’s a simple explanation, and with it comes a nod, serving as command for the Blissey that stands by his side. It casts a SAFEGUARD on the group and all those nearby. Just in case.

”If you end up having to engage, don’t do anything reckless. That’s an order. Let’s move.”

Just like that, Tam starts walking towards the theatre, keeping a close eye on his surroundings.

Tam does no more than watch Orion when he starts moving towards the next house, as if wondering what the hell he’s doing. Daydreaming, apparently. There’s a smirk for a second there, right before he too approaches the gate that leads to the house’s backyard.

”Clover, stay here.” He tells the Yamper when at the gate, knowing how excitable she can be and that that could easily scare a skittish Skitty away.

”Yeah, I only go camping for work these days.” The response is given then, his gaze wandering over their surroundings in search of the cat. ”It’s still nice, though.”

The Skitty is not hard to find. Tam stares at it and it stares back.

Instead of approaching, he crouches down to be closer to eye-level with it, knowing this will make it feel less wary, and then, in the way most people know, he quietly makes that sound that seems irresistible to most feline pokémon:

The Pheromosa stares at them and Tam stares back. He’s seen enough reports on Ultra Beasts to recognize it for what it is. For a short moment, he wonders if he’s going to have to deal with something even more annoying than a fire, but then Katherine Fairburne appears and it all makes perfect sense. The fact that he recognizes her is mostly because she seems to be the only Elite Four member that has been one for a while now. No wonder the Pheromosa is helping instead of trying to murder them.

”Help’s always welcome.” Tam shrugs, though he agrees that the fire is mostly handled. The Gyarados can take care of it easily enough, and from the looks of it, no one has gotten hurt or anything of the like.

All this talk of powers and what they may or may not do is not for him. Tam has lived in Hoenn long enough to know how useful and perhaps even necessary avatars and their patrons can be against all the unusual threats the region has faced (like when invaders came from Ultra Space), but even if that’s the case, he can’t help but still see them for what they are: people, no more than that.
