”What’s with you and eggs?” There’s a small smile, because admittedly, that much is cute to him. It’s not just the sheepish look Orion gives him either. It’s the fact that the comment reminds him of that one particular August morning back at his own home – a morning which now feels as if it happened an eternity ago.

He lets Orion do most of the work, if only for the sake of making sure that he knows what to do if he ever wants to try making poffins on his own. Tam had decided on preparing only a single batch of batter: filled with berries that are both nutritious and complementary to each other in flavour. It’s easier this way, simpler, and more likely to be enjoyed by every pokemon they give the poffins to.

When Orion tries the batter, he gets curious.

Stepping closer, he reaches with a single finger, swiping some of the leftover batter from the side of the bowl, but when he’s about to bring it to his mouth, an idea comes to mind, and it’s then that the mixture is instead smeared on Orion’s cheek.

Only once this is done does he try it.

”Oh yeah, that turned out pretty good.”

He’d like it too. He doesn’t say it, because he doesn’t think that much to be necessary, but he does think it all the same.

Helping matters to Tam; being a good ranger and doing right by the people of Hoenn. It’s nice to know that it seems to matter to Orion too, especially because these days, with everything going on, it’s often that others seem to focus so much on the grand problems that they forget about the struggles of Hoenn’s people and their pokémon.

”Now you spray the pan or grease it or whatever, put the batter in it, throw it in the oven, and wait.”

”She sure is.” Tam too doesn’t mean it in any malicious way. Hailee Jacobs is insufferable, Orion Lykos is a menace, and he could go on to describe every single member of their squad in similar ways, but he’s still proud of them. That much is something even Tam won’t ever deny.

He absentimently watches Orion, following his movements, and when doing so, Tam finds himself wondering if Orion is the sort of person who cares a lot about keeping his place clean. Had the mess been bothering him so much that he felt like doing dishes at that very second? The ranch looks really neat too…

Tam himself hates doing dishes, to the point that he had gotten a dishwasher so as not to deal with it.

He hadn’t really meant to keep it a secret, he simply hadn’t thought of telling anyone until this moment.

No one had asked, because those are not the sort of things people usually ask Tam.

”Yeah.” The logic behind it had been simple enough: if he were buying himself something to eat as a reward for having done a good job, he would want his favourite food. It’s why he had decided on getting them pizza the first time, and admittedly when it had happened he had found it to be beneficial for himself too.

For some reason Tam can’t quite understand or explain, those pizzas always taste better when eating with the squad instead of at home, all by himself.

”It is good, but yeah… Keep it to yourself or Hailee might think she can try to convince me to get pizza every day.”

At that, he smirks just so slightly.

”Sushi.” Tam echoes, and while there’s not even a hint of disbelief or mockery in his voice, there’s the obvious implication: what happened to not getting that? Yet, in the most involuntary of ways, Tam finds himself smiling just so slightly. ”That’s cute. I like sushi.”

Maybe it’s the fact that it sounds like something most people don’t know about; something Orion seems almost embarrassed of. Why, though? It’s just food.

”Pizza, stone baked, from my favourite pizza place in Slateport.”

The same pizza place where he buys the squad pizza when they actually reach the ten day mark without any incidents. It’s a simple truth Tam has never cared to disclose: as much as those moments are a reward for them, they're also him celebrating with his favourite food.

If Tam were more observant, if he were better at understanding people, or if he were empathetic at all, he would perhaps realise that saying things like those might make Orion feel insecure. However, Tam is none of those things, and as such, the thought doesn’t even cross his mind.

He takes a sip from his glass, savouring the rich flavour of the Gogoat milk.

”Whatever they like is up to them. All the weird names for it get me, though.”

It’s more like he can’t be bothered with learning them all. But, when it comes to Orion, there’s a certain hint of curiosity that won’t go away throughout the conversation.

Tam notices the blushing, but in itself, this is no rarity. He has noticed it before too: how Orion often seems to end up blushing when they spend time alone together. Tam doesn’t mind it. If anything, there’s something rather cute about it.

”Fridge.” Tam responds then, right back to looking and acting as stoic as can be. Even his smirk had been fleeting. But, then again, they always are, aren’t they?

Leaning against the counter, he watches Orion, and at the teasing question, an eyebrow is raised.

”I thought vegans are the ones who don’t drink milk? …Or is that the other ones?” The joke goes right over his head. It’s a serious question; he always gets them mixed up. Vegetarians are vegetarians, and Tam has never had much reason to care for all of that. ”Sure, though. I don’t mind milk.”

”Orion.” There’s something ever so mildly reproaching about his tone, but the slight smirk that tugs at his lips marks it as teasing. ”Yeah, probably… If you don’t sift your dry ingredients you’ll get clumps, and if you don’t mix them all together first, you’ll get uneven amounts of one or the other in the batter. Believe me, I learned the hard way too.”

It had been trial and error, really.

It had been reading recipes, watching videos, and having a whole lot of patience.

Despite Orion’s jokes, Tam is no natural chef. He had learned to cook out of necessity, but through it, he had ended up realising he actually kind of enjoys it. It’s nice to be able to make something good.

”I’ll take care of the oven. It’s good to cover the batter and let it rest for a bit anyway… hydrates the flour and what not.” It’s said nonchalantly while approaching the oven, as if this is the sort of thing that is more than obvious to him. "I'll set a timer."

At first he simply watches him. Not because he’s worried that somehow Orion will cut a finger off or something while attempting to chop the berries, but in case he needs to make a correction or two.

After a short moment, his attention turns towards the ingredients on the counter, beginning to sift things into a bowl:

”You’ll want to put all your dry ingredients first.” Tam explains, and although it's subtle, to every action there’s a methodical level of care. Cooking is an act of patience and Tam is rarely a man who is in a hurry.

”Then eggs, milk, and everything else. Once it’s all mixed together, you can add the berries.”
[break][break]
It’s as if he has done this countless times before, which he has, of course.

He had decided on poffins because they’re just about the simplest yet most nutritious thing they could make when it came to pokémon food, but apparently Orion struggles with even those. Tam isn’t sure how that’s even possible, but to his own surprise, instead of finding this knowledge to be disappointing he finds it be kind of really endearing. It makes him want to tease him.

”Hm… Try not to burn these, I’d rather not have HNN headlines saying Slateport Rangers are poisoning the pokémon of the less fortunate or whatever.” As per usual, his tone is as neutral as it is placid, bearing no hint of a joke, but while he washes his hands and grabs utensils, his gaze meets that of Orion for a short moment. ”You’ll be fine, just trust me.”

He had offered to teach Orion how to cook, after all.

He had meant it.

”Wanna chop the berries while I get started with the batter? I’ll walk you through it as I go.”

For Orion’s sake, Tam had decided to give him the easiest job possible. Surely no one can mess up chopping, no?
