He has been to more than a few stings, and he has hated every single one of them. Dealing with people really isn’t his thing. All these codes, all these lies, all these games… They just don’t suit Tam. He’s honest and straightforward, and he really sucks at all this stuff.

Raziel Beckett, on the other hand?

His performance leaves the captain unsure if he should be impressed or concerned, but regardless, it gets the job done, and soon enough, they’re being shown pillows which clearly contain pokéballs in them.

”Yup. Let’s take the whole lot of them.”

Before anyone can react, two pokémon are released: a huge Tyranitar that appears with a roar, her SAND STREAM summoning up a SANDSTORM that decreases visibility, and a seemingly insignificant Klefki which FAIRY LOCK keeps anyone from escaping.

Tam reaches to disarm the man closest to him. Not a word said now that they're not seen as needed.

Tam had not become a ranger to deal with people. In fact, quite the opposite: he had chosen to become a ranger because pokémon are much easier to deal with than people. Missions like this one are not his particular cup of tea. But, pokémon are supposedly being harmed during these races, and so it is that he’ll do his job and he’ll do it right.

At first, he does no more than light himself a cigarette and watch the cars with that ever so impassive expression of his. He talks to no one, he doesn’t even bother with exchanging looks with most people; as if he doesn’t consider any of them to be worth his time or energy.
[break][break]
He’s silent, and that silence pays off due to two things. The first is the fact that he overhears someone mention that the Drift King never lets anyone look under the hood of his car, and the second is that when the race is about to start, the flames are not what draws his attention to the red car: it’s the particular sound made by the revving engine.
[break][break]
”Hmm.” The cigarette is stomped out, and when he approaches jack wainwright, he calmly makes sure no one else overhears. ”Pretty sure there’s AUTOTOMIZING pokémon in that engine. Likely Klink or Klang. All those flames don’t spell anything good for them.”

The implication is clear: they should probably stop the race before it’s too late.

He had had the full intention of letting Raziel Beckett lead. He had been the one who had found the intell: it’s his case and Tam is here more as backup than anything else. The issue is that once again, during this kind of mission, his own aloof and impassive nature proves to be a blessing as much as it is a curse.

People rarely doubt that Tam knows what he’s doing, because he looks and acts like he’s fully certain of everything and like nothing can shake him. At the same time, this means that they usually expect him to be “the one in charge” and thus also the one who does all the talking. Tam hates doing the talking.

They’re surrounded. There’s workers everywhere, boxes filled with clothing, and in the distance, Tam is almost certain he can hear the sound of sewing machines at work.
[break][break]
He remains looking utterly unfazed through it all, even when asked a question. An eyebrow is raised.

”The best ones you got.”
[break][break]
Inside, where no one can sense it, he wants to die a little. Had there been another code they had not known of? Ugh, this is stressful.

Just in case, his hands remain in his pockets, where minimised pokéballs await – ready.

If only for a second there, Tam forgets that he is disguised, that he looks nothing like himself, that Razz is playing a part, and that even if he weren’t, the Elite Ranger probably isn’t aware that their age difference is actually a handful of years. People always tell him he acts older than his age and Tam is never sure if he’s supposed to take that as a compliment.

”Yeah, fine. Since you really want it.” He sighs, and although Tam has never been particularly frugal, even he has to resist the urge to frown at the price of what to him is no more than a questionable hat. Some people care too much about that sort of stuff.

He lets Razz do most of the talking, and when the phrase is spoken to the sales associate, the change in their demeanour is subtle but not hard to miss. The man gets a good look at them before finally stating that ”they just got a shipment of those but it’s still out back.”.

”That’s fine, we don’t mind.”

It makes sense: they wouldn't want the public to see wares of that kind.

Tam is not one for acting and that much is probably obvious to anyone who knows him. Yet, under the guidance of his Zoroark, his usually-lazy Zorua had done a surprisingly good job at providing a disguise with its ILLUSION, making it so that the man that stands within this clothing store looks nothing like the ranger captain people in the night market have come to know.

”Not bad at all. You should get it.” He tells a disguised Raziel Beckett, wondering how often it is that the Elite Ranger does this sort of operation.

Tam had not become a ranger to deal so much with people and to play this sort of games, but if Razz’s intel is right, then this game of pretend is a small price to pay for the potential of uncovering a smuggling operation and saving more than a few pokémon in the process. It’s why he had chosen to come here himself; why he subtly looks around the store, searching.

He doesn't miss the employee that stands idly by the door to the back of the building, nor the way the cashier watches them.

When Altair approaches her, Clover’s attention immediately turns towards him, her wet nose gently touching that of the Absol in greeting. She’s clearly pleased, and the fact that she hadn’t had a clue who they’d be visiting today probably has to do with it – yes, Tam hadn’t mentioned it.

Tam never mentions a lot of things. Like the fact that a mere glance at the Sawsbuck antler chandelier had brought back memories of the herds of them that had been a permanent presence at his family’s estate when growing up. He sees no point in sharing such things. Instead, he focuses on his reason to be at the ranch.

”Sure. You have berries, right?” He doesn’t wait for Orion to answer before heading towards the fridge, ingredients being calmly selected and placed on the kitchen island. ”Figured we can make some poffins, maybe even some basic poké puffs… Altair would probably like those.”
[break][break]
Clover barks at the mention of some of her favourite treats, because even though most of what they make will be for pokémon that are truly in need of such things at times like these, Tam isn’t heartless enough not to spare some for his and Orion’s teams.

”Ever made anything like that?”

He does remember Orion isn’t great at cooking, but generally speaking, Tam is not one to make assumptions.

Tam isn’t nervous.

Why would he be? They may rarely spend time together outside of work, he may have never been to Orion Lykos’s place before, and there may even be certain implications to the fact that it will just be the two of them together alone, but of course, as should only be expected, none of these things cross the captain’s mind when making his way to Verdanturf.

It’s a nice day, and when he arrives at the ranch, he also finds it to be a nice place. Calm. Completely different from the chaos and noise that seems to define Slateport City at all times. Being that they’re in the countryside, Clover seems even more excited than usual – perhaps because when he takes her to places like this it usually means she ends up herding.
[break][break]
Sadly for the Yamper, no activities like that await her, but she does still rush inside when the door is opened by the Espeon, going directly to happily greet Orion.
[break][break]
As per usual, Tam is much more paced, and he even gently scratches the Espeon’s head when stepping into the ranch. Sky blue eyes scan his surroundings, but unlike what Orion would perhaps expect, there is no negative judgement.

”Hey, Altair.” He passingly greets the Absol on his way to the kitchen, following after Clover, and one there, he meets Orion’s gaze. ”Hey. Nice place.”

Clover barks up at Orion, wagging her short tail.

Every single ranger here must need an ear exam. That’s the only logical explanation Tam can come up with as to why they would all choose to ignore the fact that what had drive Calliope Marks to act as she did (wrong as she may have been), was that Matt Vice insulted the disability of a ranger who, in Tam’s own opinion, has done more for this region than most people here combined. Do they really care so little for him just because he works for Silph Co or some bullshit? His respect for the few of them he actually did respect is lost, and it's lost fast.

Yet, true to his nature, Tam doesn’t bother with meaningless retorts. He doesn’t bother with arguments to which he sees no point. He addresses one person and one person alone:

”Kingsman.” Usually, he’d just call him ‘Razz’, but this time there’s a stern note when the Slateport Captain turns to look at Raziel Beckett from where he sits. ”Thank you again for everything you do for the region. Don’t take what one cadet said to heart. You've earned your place here, more than most of us have.”

That’s it. He adds no more than that.

He goes back to silently listening to what everyone has to say, a hand calmly petting the Yamper who sits by the table. He pays attention to every single word of Josh Dragomir explanation about his tech, he follows Josh Devlin’s intricate tale about the place their reports had described, and he says nothing of his opinions on all of that. He doesn't take a pair of glasses, but he also doesn't explain that this mostly due to believing that this is not the time for their budget to be spent in such a manner.

Only once Orion Lykos speaks up is Tam pulled away from perfectly stoic silence, for he knows well that there is no way that sharing what Team Rocket had done to him with this room full of strangers could have been easy for the man by his side. So, when Orion sits back down, the simplest of questions is asked – quietly so no one else hears:

”Are you alright? You didn’t have to tell them all that, Orion.”

He didn’t have to, yet as Tam sees it, Orion is right. Just like Talia Celes, Raziel Beckett, Caleb Harcourt, and everyone else who had shared such a sentiment:

Team Rocket doesn’t need legendary pokémon to be dangerous, and rangers like them also don’t need legendary pokémon to be able to help Hoenn.

Orion is careful and Tam is thankful for that. It helps him notice things he would have otherwise perhaps seen under a different light. Like the way Orion doesn’t move away from the Froslass even when it suddenly appears next to him. Like how kind he is to her. Like how he clearly cares a lot about the well-being of this pokémon he just met a moment ago. There’s something sweet about it, and when the thought crosses Tam’s mind, he attributes it to Orion being the great ranger he knows him to be.

Once the Froslass is safely (and temporarily) captured, they make their way down the stairs, and of course, as should only be expected, it’s just as Tam is starting to feel less on edge that he’s reminded that there’s a second ghost haunting this manor…

”Do you think the Misdreavus will be easier to f–”

He doesn’t get to finish the sentence because it appears in front of him. Screaming.

Tam takes a step back, and it’s then that his heel hits the staircase right behind him. Ouch.

Thankfully, Orion is quick to act, and within seconds the Misdreavus is also within a pokéball’s confines. Tam sighs, clearly not nearly as amused as his companion.

”Ugh. Let’s just get out of here so I can smoke in peace.”

Who was he to determine what the right type of person to become a ranger was? Who was he to claim a moral high ground over potential recruits? As long as they looked as if they’d do their job well and didn’t intend to harm pokémon, that’s what mattered to Tam the most. Anyone had the potential to become a good ranger, regardless of what their initial reason for joining was. That’s what his own time as a ranger had taught him.

”Sometimes we also have to protect people from pokémon.” The addition may have seemed insignificant to most people, but it was one important to make, because in a place like Hoenn, that rang truer than in any other. Wild pokémon could be a danger to the population near them, legendary pokémon could cause devastation when going on rampages, and on rare occasions, rangers also had to deal with occurrences like terribly dangerous pokémon coming to Hoenn from other dimensions.

”If you become a ranger, a lot of people will tell you a lot of things about what the ideals of a ranger are… Safeguarding nature, protecting pokémon, and protecting those in need. ”You’d be a great sports commentator if you fail your ranger exams.” Tam says quietly in the most deadpan tone ever, half to tease Jake and half as a reminder that there are indeed tests awaiting him so he should take this mission seriously. This whole “aggressive Combee” thing is starting to get a little out of hand, but since he had brought Jake with him the first time they had ran into this problem, bringing him to deal with the hive makes sense to Tam. He should be ready.

Still, he sure hadn’t expected there to be this much honey. From where it clings to his shoulder, his Ditto tries to reach for some of it, and Tam has to stop it.

”Be glad you’re training in Hoenn and not somewhere like Unova.” His own ranger training had been tame just about all the way through, and while it hadn’t been bad and he had adapted well enough once actually working, some more fieldwork sure would have made the transition much easier for all parties involved.

”We’re only here to investigate for now, though… We have no idea what we may be dealing with, so try not to run around getting all of their attention this time.”

Absol. The mention of the pokémon and the disasters they warn of brings back memories of times long passed; of Lacunosa and of a red Absol standing atop of a cavern’s entrance. They had ignored it because they had known the species to inhabit the area. They should have known better than that.

”Yeah… People should listen to Absol more often, it would save them a lot of trouble.” There’s no need to explain why he thinks as much, and for once, Tam is glad. He generally doesn’t care much when it comes to speaking of most things, but Lacunosa is something he’d rather never mention to anyone.

It’s not like they have the time for it, anyway.

They have a job to do, which he’s immediately reminded of by the Froslass that decides this is now a ‘No Smoking’ zone. Honestly? Tam would have been annoyed, but since he can’t see them, for a second there he had forgotten about the amount of ghosts that must be in this manor. He has never liked smoking indoors when there’s pokémon close.

”You've got snow all in your hair."

”Do I?” A gloved hand runs through blond locks, getting rid of some of the snowflakes. But, most of them remain, and in the end, Tam doesn’t really mind them. He had spent just about half of his life with snow in his hair. ”That’s fine, but… be careful.”

He wouldn’t think the reminder to be needed, but then the Froslass immediately attacks the cadet.

Tam has to resist the urge to jump in, becoming all too aware of the way his heart is pounding. Is he worried? Absolutely. Still, he stays by the doorframe, choosing to trust Orion’s judgement when it comes to this. He had meant what he said before: he’s only here as backup, he trusts Orion to deal with this.

It takes a moment, but the Froslass eventually seems to realise that they really don’t mean her any harm at all.

In the unremarkable office of Slateport’s ranger captain, this makes for an unremarkable meeting. Or, well, that’s what it had been supposed to be, at least. It’s what Tam had expected it to be; a discussion concerning jacob kim’s progress and not much more. But, apparently, the cadet has different plans for them both.

”Hm?” Sky blue eyes look up from the notes he had been taking for the sake of meeting Jake’s gaze, and even though Tam is rarely the sort of person who cares for trying to understand why other people do the things they do, it’s Jake’s words that lead him to make an attempt.

Is he feeling impatient? Is he really worried for Hoenn and wanting to help more? Is he just bored?

Sometimes, Jake reminds him too much of what he was like back when he was barely more than a teenager, and considering his own track record, that much is concerning.
