Is that not why they’re here? Sometimes people make comments that seem way too obvious to Tam, especially considering that in this case, being alert is exactly their task. He has learned, however, that nothing productive tends to come out of pointing this much out to others, and since he cares little for pointless discussions, Tam does as Tam does best and remains quiet.

He allows the sound of the waves to wash away all thoughts concerning anything other than the Tirtouga, and when he does so, he also takes no of the ceaseless cries of the Wingull – so often dismissed due to spending so much time by the sea.

”Castform.” It serves both as a response to Talia’s question and a way to call to the Weather Pokémon’s attention. He nods upwards, silently commanding the Castform to go deal with the flock of birds and keep them away from the Tirtouga. His command is immediately followed.

”I don’t usually name my pokémon.” He admits, watching it go higher. It’s only once sure that the Castform can take care of the Wingull that he looks at the sands once more. ”...I don’t think any names I come up with really fit them.”

”Just be careful with the injured.” Tam tells Hailee Jacobs when she declares that she’ll help get everyone inside safely. Something that she probably already knows well, but that he makes sure to reiterate because of the dangers of the situation they’re in.

It could be a dire situation, but in Tam’s experience, as long as they remain calm and think things through, they should be able to deal with the distortion just fine until it fades completely. It’s just a matter of being able to withstand it until the very last moment.

The way the ground begins to shake sure doesn’t help with this.

Tam doesn’t blame Noah, but the sudden EARTHQUAKE startles some of the refugees, leaving the ranger captain himself to hold onto a nearby pole for the sake of not losing his footing. The EARTHQUAKE brings back memories, but he tries to push them away. There’s a reason why he hasn’t allowed Lily to use moves like those for years now.

”Noah, Have Titan be careful, a lot of the structures here aren’t stable.”

It’s a temporary camp. It would be bad if one of the buildings were to collapse.

At least the attack did deal with the Typhlosion, but soon enough, more pokémon come.

”I can imagine. Seems like a lot of ghosts tend to be distrusting in nature ‘cause of their experiences with people. Kind of a shame.” It doesn’t take an expert in spectral pokémon to know as much. Tam may not deal with ghosts all that often, but he is a ranger, and the profession has taught him quite a few things about pokémon in general. ”Let me know if you end up making any progress with the Phantump.”

Perhaps it’s the ranger in him. Perhaps it’s the fact that this clearly matters to Orion.

Whatever the case, Tam doesn’t think much of it, and as they make their way up he brings out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. Out of habit, he gently hits the top of it against his palm a couple of times, so as to pack the tobacco tighter into the cigarettes before opening it. He takes one.

”I get that, most of my pokémon are rescues too… Never got why people don’t like Dark types much.”

Of course he would think so when his favourite pokémon happens to be a Tyranitar.

At the second floor, sky blue eyes wander from Orion to their surroundings while a hand reaches for his lighter. An open door leads into an empty room, and just as Tam gets a look inside while attempting to light his cigarette, a sudden ICY WIND blows, extinguishing the flame. This time, Tam does hold onto his cigarette.

”...Think I found her.” He says to Orion then. His blond hair is tousled, marked by snowflakes.

Tam has often been told that there’s something reassuring about how calm he is about things; how even in dire situations, he always seems collected and unlikely to panic. He had never really understood why people say these kinds of things, for he has always been one to simply act according to his instincts, but here, listening to the way Orion calmly talks about the ghosts that have Tam himself on edge, he gets it.

”Hmm… That makes sense.” It’s easier to be calm about things once they make logical sense. He still doesn’t like the idea of not knowing what all these invisible ghosts around them might be doing, but Orion’s explanations are somewhat reassuring. ”You like them a lot, don’t you? Ghosts?”

The comment is made in passing just as Puddi gets a little too close to Tam, causing the captain to poke the cheek of the Ditto face which definitely looks out of place in the body of a Chandelure. Puddi giggles and Tam looks at Orion, a miniscule smile comes and goes.

”If they were brought here as a joke, then we should focus on relocating them. Doubt they liked getting forced to come here.”

In their place, he would probably be a little annoyed too.

To Tam, there’s a strange sense of comfort in the cold. It’s familiar, appreciated, and welcome. It’s not what bothers him about this situation.

The issue is knowing that ghosts can turn invisible, that there could be dozens all around them at this very moment, and that they could appear wherever they wish, whenever they wish. It has him on edge.

”Huh… True, I had forgotten about Halloween. I remember doing things like those with my friends back in school. Never really got the point.” But he had done them anyway, because why not? For someone as antisocial as Tam is, even back when he was a teenager he always seemed to have this way of drawing certain people to him. Probably because of how little he seems to care about everything.

He does care about this, though.

He cares about their task, about where they are, about the obvious fact that there’s ghosts all around them, and abo–...

”FUCK.” A sudden scream startles him, causing him to jump. A hand clings to Orion’s arm, and it takes Tam a moment to realise as much. The same amount of time that it takes for him to stop feeling as if his heart is beating out of his damn chest. ”...Oh.”

Tam lets go, and there and then, something pulls at his hair from behind, making him tense up again and instinctively turn to look back. There’s nothing unexpected.

”Orion…” He sighs, defeated.

He needs a cigarette.

Tam goes from looking at the sad, ashen remains of his fallen cigarette to looking at the cadet, and while he does notice the apologetic look Orion gives him, the same can be said for the teasing. So that’s how it is.

”I’m not jumpy.” He declares in the same stern and emotionless tone that is to be expected of Tam, and yet at that moment, beneath the Chandelure’s light, there is the slightest blush.
[break][break]
He doesn’t linger on the matter, of course, and this time, when the door suddenly closes behind them, he simply sighs – trying his best to ignore the way his body subtly tenses up.
[break][break]
Tam feels like anything could pop out of a dark corner at any given time.
[break][break]
That’s why he releases his Ditto: for his own peace of mind, even if anyone else would assume it might be for added light given the way it instantly transforms into a perfect copy of Orion’s Chandelure. Puddi – as Calliope Marks had once named the Transform Pokémon – giggles, amused.

”Hmm… Might have been a wild pokémon taking advantage of the situation and looking for food.” Tam’s gaze scans their surroundings, also making note of the glass on the floor after the warning comes. It’s then that he looks at Orion once more. ”You lead, I’m mostly here as your backup today.”

He had meant the part about Orion being the expert here.

Is it some sort of mercy? A silver lining? Tam considers Talia’s words carefully, because to him most events are exactly that: events. Never only good, never only bad, just things that happen and alter his life. Things due to which he must adapt.

”Hmm… Guess so.” It’s slightly that he shrugs. ”When the eggs are in places like Slateport beach it’s easier for us to find them, monitor them, and protect them. It also means dealing with people like civilians and even poachers knowing they’re there, though.”

Tam is objective.

Yet, when his gaze falls upon the sands, he goes quiet, noticing the slight shifting. For Talia’s sake, he nods in that direction.

”Look.” A small Tirtouga begins to poke its head out of the sand, doing its best to break free and head towards the ocean. ”The barrier has disturbed a lot of migration patterns, so there’s that. For us, right now, it means dealing with a lot more predators than usual… Keep an eye out.”

”Just Tam is fine.” is the first thing the ranger captain says to Kieran Roth when making it to the training grounds. As per usual, he’s clad in a suit instead of the standard ranger uniform, but his badge and golden armband still mark his position and rank. Next to him, a small Yamper barks a greeting at the new trainee.

Part of being in charge of a city involves training its new recruits, and while Tam may not have the time to oversee every single aspect of said training, being in the loop is important to him.
[break][break]
This is Kieran’s first proper training session, and admittedly, Tam looks forward to seeing how he’ll do. Even if his impassive expression reveals no excitement or anticipation at all.

”Let’s get started.” He whistles, and from all around them, Falinks appear. Two Falinks, actually. Twelve individuals. They make a tight formation surrounding the trainee, but they do not attack him. There’s a fierce look on their faces, the move NO RETREAT serving as encouragement.

”I want you to get them out of this area.”
[break][break]
In the training grounds, the limits of the arena they stand at are clearly marked. The task seems simple in theory: get the Falinks to cross the line. A quick pokémon relocation.

The reports of wild pokémon thrashing an old shrine at the outskirts of town are nothing out of the norm for the ranger captain, since of course wild pokémon will seek shelter in any building that stands in their proximity. All that can really be done is deal with the current situation and set up measures to deter further approach from wild pokémon, but things like those are only temporary measures, and eventually, making a trip back to the shrine always ends up being necessary.

Such is the case today, out of all days.

It’s calmly that he goes up the steps, not even having bothered with donning own proper ranger gear for this sort of mission. He’s clad in one of his usual suits, his badge and golden armband still being clear signs of his rank and profession.

When seeing the sheer amount of pokémon around him, he doesn’t seem fazed at all, and it’s from one of the green pokéballs at his belt (Friend Ball) that a Stoutland is released then.

Tam nods. The Stoutland ROARS. As a result, the closest few pokémon run away.
[break][break]
It’s only then that the ranger notices that there’s someone else here: a young officer and her Florges.

”Oh. Hey. Does your Florges know AROMATHERAPY or something along those lines? It’ll help calm the wild pokémon down.”

He doesn’t even realise he didn’t introduce himself.

He’s not thinking of the here and now but of his childhood days; of how people had assumed Fawley Hall must be full of ghosts when he was a kid, and how surprised they had seemed when he had told them he had never met one before. They hadn’t believed him back then. ”Any luck with the Phantump?”

When Orion releases his Chandelure, Tam doesn’t step away from it – not even when it gets much closer than what most would consider to be comfortable. He’s not a superstitious person. A pokémon is just a pokémon, regardless of typing, and pokémon are much easier to deal with than most people. Beyond that, his trust in Orion as a ranger partner also extends to his team.

He's about to explain what the reports about the manor claim when the door suddenly, causing him to drop his cigarette. It hadn’t even half burnt.

Stomping the cigarette out, Tam sighs, then running a gloved hand through blonde hair.

”Must really want us to go in. Let’s get this over with.”

He is surprised this time, even if only mildly. In Tam’s defence, that’s because that has been far from the case in his experience. He had never had to deal with a lot of hauntings as a ranger, given that such things were far from his expertise, and when growing up, ghosts had been something that wasn’t even spoken of in Fawley Hall. His mother is to be blamed for that last part, since pokémon like those weren’t of her liking at all.

He takes another short drag.

”Guess the new owners never got the memo. Things got so bad that they’re staying at a hotel, apparently. Place is all ours.” Tam shrugs at that, and just like that, he steps forward. No hesitation. Then again, it’s not like hesitating is in his nature. ”Come on. They really insisted in us dealing with all this asap.”

September. The weather has been getting colder, and as a result, it’s as if Tam’s mood has significantly improved. Most people probably wouldn’t notice it, for the change is all too subtle, but it does show in the way he’s become somewhat more agreeable. Somewhat more laidback. Somewhat more nice.

Only somewhat, though.

”Really? You can’t tell?” It’s almost as if there’s a slightly surprised note to his often way too neutral tone. He only glances at Orion before looking back at the old manor, and it’s then that he takes a long drag from his cigarette.

A manor.

It brings back memories.

Smoke rises in the air after a moment, disappearing with the slightest of winds.

”You’re the ghost expert. It’s haunted.”

An actual ranger task beyond a simple patrol at one of the quietest spots in their jurisdiction. The first one for Orion ever since the disaster back at Slateport harbour.

For a moment, nothing else matters. A hand cups Orion’s cheek when they kiss, and while the leather of gloves is so flawless and smooth, those had been removed for ease when they began working. Fingers that are now bare prove themselves rough, calloused and marked by years of labour, yet their touch is still gentle despite its firmness. There’s something different about the kiss this time and Tam isn’t exactly sure what. A lack of alcohol, yes, but also something soft, something nice, something he likes.

The spell is broken by loud footsteps and equally loud shouts:

"WHERE IS MY LIGHTER? TAM, I SWEAR IF YOU STOLE IT AGAIN…"

Just like that, the moment ends.

”Mm…” He allows himself a couple of seconds instead of immediately pulling away, but when their lips do part, Tam meets Orion’s gaze. ”Guess that’s my cue.”

Leave it to Tam to not even seem fazed. To put a hand on Orion’s shoulder, to give a squeeze, and to walk away. With a short whistle, he wakes Clover who gleefully walks to his side, but when he reaches the door, right before opening it, he pauses and looks back, meeting Orion’s gaze one more time.

”Wanna hangout after work?”

Faintly, he smiles.
