P-1 GRAND PRIX SIGN-UPS!
POSTED ON Jun 8, 2022 7:04:59 GMT
ANNOUNCER Avatar

SIGN-UPS ARE CLOSED*!

A special thanks to those of you who joined!

We have reached our initial deadline for sign-ups! Any sign-ups past this post that have not been cleared by FONZ will be considered invalid. The following players may still make a valid sign-up due to extenuating circumstances:

This is to get us as close to a 32 PARTICIPANT tournament to help make the format flow smoothly without any need for special rounds, bye rounds, etc. I hope everyone understands this is actually to keep things more fair, as automatic passes into the next round, or other workarounds are far less favorable alternatives to have to rely on towards the final rounds.

Matchups will still be posted no later than JUNE 14TH 11:50PM PST

P-1 GRAND PRIX GUIDELINES

AN EXPERT GUIDE TO FIGHTING HONORABLY

OVERVIEW

POKEMON NUMBER ONE GRAND PRIX will be using ROLL MECHANICS heavily to determine outcomes. Factors such as typing, abilities, etc. will not be calculated.

DO NOT post a WORK-IN-PROGRESS to check your rolls before making a response.

You should submit a post only once you have finished editing your drafted version.

TORPOR METER

  • Contestants begin with 151 torpor points. Every turn players ROLL in their post.
  • The player with the LOWEST roll loses torpor equal to the DIFFERENCE.
  • Players must accurately track their torpor meter between rounds.
  • When a contestant would drop to 0 torpor, they are KNOCKED OUT!
  • When a player is knocked out, they are eliminated from the tournament.
  • SALAC BERRIES are PROHIBITED for use in this tournament.

INITIATING A "KNOCK OUT" ROUND

A special type of round that EACH player can initiate ONCE during a match. This can be invoked at ANY point during a tournament match. They may open the thread with a Knock Out round, chain Knock Out rounds, or abstain from declaring one entirely.

Players must make THREE ROLLS in a knock out round post.

Both players choose and BOLD ONE (1) "FIGHTING" move, which their Pokemon MUST know. These will play a major role in determining the KNOCK OUT.

If Player B initiates a knock out after Player A has already posted, Player A's previous post will be ignored and they are required to make a new post RESPONDING to the knock out attempt. This is because the RESPONDING player always posts second and the INITIATING player goes first.

DETERMINING A KNOCK OUT ROUND

"FIGHTING" moves function as ROLL MODIFIERS during knock out rounds.

Outside of these rounds, they may be used for flavor, but to no mechanical effect.

If a player has lower rolls in every column (after calculating ROLL MODIFIERS) they're immediately KNOCKED OUT ignoring further torpor calculation.

When neither party meets the immediate knock out condition, participants instead lose 10 torpor for every losing column instead of calculating the differences. Players' torpor would then be calculated, and may still result in a knock out by torpor loss.

Players should always reach out to the event organizer FONZ to confirm the outcome of a KNOCK OUT as there will likely be a moderated post required to continue.

"FIGHTING" TYPE MOVES

When posting in a KNOCK OUT round, contestants are required to execute a "FIGHTING" MOVE and to BOLD it in their post, as these will have an influence on the outcome of the round. A ruleset has been developed to keep these rulings consistent.

AS A DISCLAIMER: This guide has been designed so that players can make informed choices with consistent information, but no system is perfect. The balancing behind these moves and their interplay is not necessarily fair; they are knowingly released imperfect.

If a move you believe should apply has not been listed below, contact FONZ to see if it can be integrated, but do NOT make any attempt to suggest its category or desired effects.

FIXING A MATCH

For those who want to fix the odds

If two participants agree formerly to beginning the match, they can fix their match outcome to achieve a believable result. This is for players who want a more credible outcome to their matches. A clear victor must be predetermined by participants.

They accept responsibility for keeping pace with the brisk event format.

The FINAL ROUND is the exception, which must follow the event format exclusively.

[break][break]

POKKEN TOURNAMENT

A LONG-STANDING TRADITION of professional fighters initiated by the illustrious Dojo Masters of old, and later regulated by the POKEMON LEAGUE citing safety concerns, the P-1 GRAND PRIX is the ultimate POKKEN STYLE tournament where various species come together to engage in mixed martial arts combat![break][break]

It is a SINGLE ROUND ELIMINATION style tournament where only the masters of any art stand a chance at earning the prized P-1 GRAND PRIX CHAMPIONSHIP BELT, and all that the title entails![break][break]

Restrictions apply to those wishing to enter:[break]
  • Pokemon must have an obvious lean towards a HUMANOID physique; that is to say that a Pokémon should ideally stand on two legs, and brandish no less than two arms or hands to engage in physical combat (SCIZOR is a good example of an exception).
  • SIZABLE CLAWS or TALONS—anything that could be considered WEAPONLIKE—will bar an applicant from entry (the ability to retract claws, avoid use of the weaponized limb, object, etc. will be considered.)
  • There will be a case-by-case review, so feel free to reach out to FONZ during the sign-up process!

[break][break][break]

HELPFUL ADVICE

THE THRILLING MATCHUPS that occur during the P-1 Grand Prix attracts international attention, and most spectators are looking for contestants to put on a good show: FLASHY and PRETENTIOUS fighting styles, anime tropes, etc. are the selling points of the contest as well as demonstrating excellent sportmanship![break][break]

Try to flavor your Pokemon's fighting style after a real or imaginary martial art, maybe borrow a special move from somewhere, or even borrow GIFs or other resources to help provide excitement to the fight. Think of this as a dark tournament arc for your pokemon![break][break]

That said, due to the nature of the event, contestants will be quickly eliminated as we close in on our FINAL ROUND. These threads are expected to be brisk, unpredictable but also less stressful as the stakes are much lower. Think of it as a chance to EXPERIMENT with how you handle a player-versus-player environment, compared to other situations where you work towards an expected outcome.

[break][break][break][break][break][break]

SIGN-UPS!

The tournament will be accepting sign-ups starting immediately JUNE 5TH and will take applications no later than JUNE 7TH, 11:59PM PST to keep things well paced (the first rounds will be posted and ready by no later than JUNE 14TH, 11:59PM). Players may only sign-up with ONE character as of right now![break][break]

Think you've got what it takes to win? Then step into the ring...[break][break]
