Ruby couldn't stop her wicked grin when she saw that the Champ was up. Would dunking him actually have any sort of meaningful impact? Of course not. Would it feel good? Hell yes. She narrowed her eyes at the target, then threw the ball as hard as she could.

Ruby glowered at Isaac's faux-innocent tone. This little shit. When he started talking about it, Ruby's eyes widened in a panic. Screw being a good example; if Isaac started blabbing about the true nature of their jobs, she'd shove her fist in his big mouth. But then he said it was horror movies giving him nightmares, not, you know, watching someone die in front of him. The tension building in Ruby's body was washed away by confusion, followed by more embarrassment as Isaac took that opening to continue his tale.

[break][break]The worst part? She'd walked right into this. She had just asked him if he'd forgotten, after all. And clearly, he hadn't.

[break][break]"That's wonderful!" Jade said. "Ruby really has a talent for finding good Pokémon partners for non-battle purposes."

[break][break]Great, now her sister was joining in, too. Her blush grew deeper. Jumping in the ocean suddenly seemed like an okay idea. "I mean, it was obvious," she said, trying to sound dismissive. "Bad dreams? Dream-eating Pokémon. It's not rocket science." Okay, maybe that wasn't the best idiom to use, but if she made a big deal out of it, that'd just be weird. Luckily, there was a tug on her line at that moment, so she let her thoughts go to reeling that in, instead.

[break][break]Jade had no idea if Isaac was even looking in her direction, but she still flashed a grateful smile in his direction while Ruby was distracted.

Ruby nudged Isaac right back, trying to smoke out these mushy feelings with the embers of her competitive spirit. "Yeah, yeah, put your money where your mouth is when we get to it."

[break][break]It felt so weird having to save this energy for a later time. Usually by now, hands and/or Poké Balls were already being thrown. There was usually genuine malice behind it, too. This zone between combative and cordial was new. Though Ruby couldn't read her sister's mind, Jade was right: She didn't really want to hurt Isaac. She totally wanted to kick his butt, yeah, but that was different from actually hurting him.

[break][break]Ruby had never realized just how deep-seated her previous career goal had been. At the time, it had just been something good she could do with her life that happened to relate to her sister. But when one of the first Pokémon she'd caught had helped Jade so much, she couldn't really say that anymore, could she? The realization felt like a thorn nestling into her heart.

[break][break]"You already asked me." Ruby's voice became more tense, more defensive, as she tried to dislodge that thorn. "Or what, did you forget already?"

[break][break]Her grip on her rod was tight as she reeled in her latest catch.

"Heh, you got that right!" Ruby said, still grinning. "Hope you're ready to get knocked on your a—butt." Gah, that didn't sound nearly as threatening. It didn't help that Jade was trying not to giggle at her sister's attempts at self-censorship. Honestly, Ruby usually didn't watch her language this much around Jade. It helped that she also rarely had a reason to swear like a sailor in front of her. But Ruby wouldn't let Isaac be the better influence today, dammit—darn it!

[break][break]Jade wasn't worried about Ruby's threats. Not just because they were amusingly self-censored, but because she couldn't hear any actual malice behind them. Ruby would definitely give it her all in their spar and get in a bit of revenge, but she wouldn't try to seriously hurt Isaac. No, Jade knew what Ruby sounded like when she truly despised someone.

[break][break]Isaac's mention of how helpful Pokémon could be made Jade smile. "They've helped me so much, ever since I was little. Atlas is a fairly new addition, but my first Pokémon was actually a Zubat, Camazotz. I'm sure you know that Zubat are born without eyes, so they have to navigate using sonar and echolocation. I learned a lot from him." She paused for a moment, then decided it was worth adding, "Ruby actually caught him for me."

[break][break]"Yeah, well, you know," Ruby started, embarrassed again, "I figured you could use a partner who'd understand you. We were both still kids then." Oh, look, another tug on the line! Ruby focused on reeling it in.

Dang, if Ruby had gotten here earlier, she could have dunked Hoenn's Champion. Now that would have been an achievement. For now, she'd settle on dunking luciano fisk. She gave her chosen ball a couple of tosses in her hand before pitching it at the target.

Ruby never thought she'd be able to understand someone like Isaac Merlo, yet here they were. Of course, there was still plenty she didn't know about her fellow "freelancer," but that'd probably come with time. She could always try to dig up info on him. That wasn't really her style, though. She'd rather take the direct approach.
