Rook knew he'd been somewhat naive to the reality of things, but to realize how far out of depth he actually was... it was a bit alarming. Maybe he'd been too easy, letting Lam go into danger so willingly. He'd never thought being a gym leader would mean having to actually fight in dangerous situations. It was a gym position, meant to challenge KIDS who likes pokemon battling. How was he so wrong about that preconception?

Probably because, before he'd known Lam, Rook had been oblivious to just about everything. He'd been a thief, what did he care how the world actually worked? He even worked for rocket from time to time. Those jobs paid the best though he never did anything actually dangerous, but that was out of his own sense of self-preservation. Not out of making a stance against Rocket's bloodlust.

Rook hadn't always had much for morals, but he wasn't a killer.

Definitely not a fighter.

"Part of me wishes you had, selfishly." Being a professor didn't mean fighting to the death every other saturday.

Rook scoffed at that, stable... yeah right. Maybe he was better actor than they'd told him he was. "I'm just selfish, that's all." He told Lam those things because he didn't care what happened to others. It was that simple, though he didn't say as much. He cared about pokemon more than people, maybe that made him heartless, but it was a wasted debate.

The idea of having kids with Lam both delighted and terrified him. He remained silent at that. "Maybe. If you think so." It just made him think about his own dad, how much they were alike in some ways.

His lips curved then into a pleased smile. "Care to enlighten then?"

This was a two prong approach.

He was hoping that the artist would just let him go for giving him compliments. That didn't mean the compliments weren't genuine, they just weren't fully without motive, big difference. He meant what he said, the guy was pretty and he was enjoying his time being held captive. At least until the tables turned and he had to switch gears and show his cards.

Lam, it was an odd name, but he didn't say as much. His own wasn't exactly normal, by any means. He wasn't sure if it was intentional or simply bad spelling. He'd never liked it anyways, his father said his name in a way that left him unsettled and unhappy.

"I'm in disguise, I couldn't possibly give you my identity so easily. You could use that against me, after all." There was truth to that, but he was also somewhat full of shit and playing games.

Regardless of his answer, he wasn't going to leave before he caught a glimpse at the guy's art. That was only polite. Rook was not an artist in the traditional sense. Painting and drawing, big no. He preferred more theatrical artistry, like lying. He had no expectations except that he would say he liked it out of hopes that the guy would continue to take this entirely unseriously.

Only he was surprised to find that Lam was quite good.

"I was planning to bullshit you regardless, but I'm genuinely impressed. You're really good, much better than the trash I was going to steal." Not that he was planning to steal this now, the work of starving artists weren't valuable enough.

A lot of things happened before he could even manage to keep up. He wasn't battle hardened or even remotely practiced in silly trainer battles. He was a thief. His pokemon were odd, mismatched vagabonds collected from garbage bins. They were even less menacing than himself.

All be knew was that his lickilicky's attack didn't hit and, instead, it was being thrown aside with a dramatic jiggle. Then there were blades hurtling toward him at terrifying speed. All he could do in that instance was freeze up, round-eyed and uselessly afraid. This wasn't what he'd meant when he'd said he wanted to be more involved and supportive of Lam. The idea that Lam did things like this on a regular was terrifying enough.

He could feel the rattle of the pokeball at his belt, jinx the zoroark desperately wanting to be released. She was the bravest of his lot, but she was wasted on a loser trainer.

By the time she burst free without his permission it was too late. Except he didn't feel the slice of blades cutting him open, the world spun. No he was spinning, airborne. Hitting the ground hard enough to knock the wind from his lungs as Jinx shot blindly forward toward the one who had struck him, aiming at with a NIGHTSLASH.

Whoever these psychos were, they clearly weren't intending to follow any rules. Not that Rook was profoundly good at following rules either. Battling had never been his strong point. He'd lived as a thief prior to meeting Lam not exactly the juggernaut of pokemon battling. The only thing of consequence was he hadn't brought his pidove, crumbs, to peck them into feeling bad for them.

Instead, he did the only sensible thing, he sent out a lickilicky,not even a terribly frightening pokemon. It's long tongue wavered in the air, beady eyes extra beady. Not a single thought in its head

"A bad idea?" He asked, uncertain to the answer. The answer wasn't always obvious, but he did know the alternative was much worse. "There's pokemon that might need us, right? I don't think its a bad idea to help them, do you?"

Rook already knew what Lam's answer would be to that. On Pokemon, they were always aligned. It was pretty clear either way that Lam's thoughts were spiraling and that was reason enough for him to try and calm him, or at the very least rationalize.

There was a lot going on though and Rook wasn't sure he was qualified to deal with anything if it got bad. The only thing he would do was hold Lam back if things got back, but he wasn't about to do that on purpose.

"Come on, they need us."

That was until the woman stepped out, equipped with what was clearly weapons. Rook stopped short, feeling the blood rush from his face. Remarks warred in his head, not wanting to make a bigger deal of this. Then again, the lady was wielding blades and a mask. She wasn't exactly family-friendly.

"Do they all see the same therapist or does Rocket just get lucky picking up psychopaths?" He asked Lam, taking a step back. Maybe he was a bit of hypocrite considering he'd some gigs for Rocket in the past, but that felt quite a long time ago.

It was good to know that Lam understood the difference between being noble and being dumb. Not that Lam was dumb, but he was noble. Rook lacked that same nobility. He was selfish and that probably wasn’t going to change any time soon. There were things that were important to him, more so than upholding the league’s agenda (no matter how good in principle).

“That sounds awful serious. I thought gym battles were just supposed to be fun things for kids with ambitions of becoming trainers, not… soldiers.” He scoffed at the thought of that. It wasn’t like they had kids…. yet, but maybe if they did…. He didn’t even want to think about the league trying to transform them into ready combatants. No matter how vile rocket was.

“I’ve learned to accept your nonsense, it’s… exciting.” He laughed, giving a playful poke. That craziness seemed drawn to Lam, which Rook was aware included himself. He was pretty crazy too.

Rook cooed lightly, “Aww no way, you’re the safe place.” They could be at that competition for hours if they tried.

He tipped his head aside, “You do realize the irony of me being the stable force in your life, right?” He laughed at that, considering he was and would always be a far cry from stable. It didn’t mean much when he felt normal in comparison to cosmic oddities.

Brushing his fingers against Lam’s scalp in a slow, massaging movement, he let the warmth settle over them for a moment of silence. He’d grown to like what they had, even if he hadn’t figured out what he needed in his own life quite yet. Lam was part of that equation. “Oh worry about tonight, huh? What should we worry about?”

“Well why not? I’m clearly an art connoisseur.” That was one way of putting his career. It certainly wasn’t a helpful answer. It wasn’t like he had any kind of belief that hottymcthotty artist here was good simply because he was hot. Then again, wouldn’t it be nice to get the best of both worlds? Good looks and talent? Rook might have been a tad bit jealous if that was the case. As much as he liked to boast and talk big, he wasn’t exactly the most… talented.

"Yeah, why not?" He shrugged, as if it was the simplest request in the world. Then again, he wasn't an artist. He had no idea how it felt to create something that wasn't stolen. "Then I'm glad you left."

There was a selfish part of him that didn't care what the League wanted. No matter how noble its intent, he would never allow it to take Lam from him. Even if Lam hated him for it. But, even then, he stepped back and let Lam go to war. That's what this was, right? War. It had never felt like that. It felt deceptive, like he'd been lied to, but he was too much in love with Lam's heroism to tell him no. It would deny him who he was, but he would always encourage him to take a step back when things got dicey.

"I appreciate that, really. I don't want you to change who you are or put others at risk, but just... look after yourself too. The league will always be around. It's in their interest to make it hard for you to turn away, okay?" He could see the writing on the wall and didn't like it. Even if he appreciated aspects of the league. They protected people and pokemon, which was more than anyone else would have done.

Rook blinked, a little confused. It didn't make much sense so he wasn't sure why he even asked. It felt like an inside joke that he wasn't there to witness, but at least Lam was trying to explain the punchline rather than leave him in the dark with a "you had to be there".

"Of course it did. You're a cozy little safe place." He smiled, thumb sliding across his forehead to cut the path from a wayward soap sud. "Pokemon get good vibes from you, for obvious reasons."

"I'm not going to pretend like I understand anything going on, but I'm here to support you anyway I can, okay?"

“I had to retreat at first.”

Rook frowned at that, "Were you in danger?" To him, there was nothing wrong with retreating under dangerous threat. Then again, he was far less noble than Lam. Although he didn't rob galleries or con anyone out of their hard-earned cash anymore, he still had that nature. At his base, he was still selfish. It was more within his own interest that Lam knew when to retreat. Though it was clear in Lam's tone that it wasn't a shared sentiment.

With a sigh, he tried not to give Lam a disapproving look. "It's not cowardly, Lam. It's good to listen to your fear. It's the compass that keeps you safe. It may not feel good listening to it at first, but you can be thankful for it after the fact. Being stubborn and noble can sometimes hurt things more than save them." Rook paused at that, blinking. "Virizion? You saw Virizion?"

Lam had a habit of saying things as if they were perfectly normal every day things. It was baffling sometimes.

Other guy? He nearly asked before shaking his head. It was more the same, he figured he'd find out in some time.

He lathered his hands, brushing them through Lam's hair. "I don't get what's the point in all of that... targeting innocent places." Sootopolis had its.... problems but didn't necessarily deserve to be turned into a warzone because two groups couldn't get along. Granted, he had dabbled in Rocket enough to know it wasn't that simple, but it was still frustrating.

Rook paused at that, "Are you not? Because if not then I could see how this might be a little awkward." Wouldn't that be a damn shame? He was hopeful that the response was interest and the blushes were reaction, but he couldn't be sure. It wasn't like he did this a whole lot. Contrary to misconception.

Half of what he said was exactly for the intent of endearing the other. It wasn't like he knew if the guy had any actual talent and it was better off a grand old mystery. Although... he was somewhat curious. Clearly the other had been painting, given the amount of paint on his face and clothes. "There's only one way for me to be sure though."

Being that he wasn't an actual medical professional, he'd leave the diagnosis to actual doctors. "Hopefully they won't have to." The least he could do right then was make sure it was properly cleaned and bandaged, but first Lam was in desperate need of shower. Something he didn't need to tell Lam because it should have been pretty obvious.

He plucked his shirt off, setting it onto the counter rather than fling it aside as it was actually clean (for the most part, considering Lam was laying all over him). Did he need another shower? Not at all. Did he want one? If Lam was taking said shower, most certainly.

"Make sure it's not too hot." Lam and his idea of a comfortable temperature were quite different. Slipping in behind him, he lathered his hand with shampoo. "Did everything go okay though?"
