"I'm not gonna get cold feet, doofus!" The laugh barked out of him, a belly-sort of laugh. He gave Lam a playful little smack on the ass, partly because he wanted the excuse. A certain level of softness had settled into his life, security that he never would have expected. It wasn't like he'd fully retired from causing mischief, but his life had changed shapes in the past year or so. Sure, he might not have been a prominent and tough trainer like Lam, but he enjoyed the simplicity. He was figuring things out for himself, but it didn't have to be immediate. He didn't have to pick between tough choices anymore. Lam afforded him that.

"Oh no, I almost feel bad for the wingulls then." He laughed, knowing he couldn't slight a bird for its hunger. In another life, Rook had just as much likelihood of being reincarnated as a hungry beach bird himself.

As proven by his own hunger, getting him in trouble again.

His stomach grumbled from all the lovely discussion of cakes. His only worry was that it might disappoint him if the cakes aren't as magical as he hoped.

"Bubblegum or... cotton candy."

"I didn't actually think about that." Flipflops made more sense on the beach and it would be entirely too hot to wear a tuxedo, right? "What if the wingulls attack me again?" They did seem to enjoy divebombing him. During his wedding, he'd be incapable of stopping them.

The thought that he was allowed to marry his best friend in the entire world was a little overwhelming. He should have been happy. He was happy, of course, but he was also terrified of letting Lam down. Even if it wasn't really possible, because Lam wouldn't be disappointed easily...

Rook tried not to overthink it too much, thankful that the wedding planning had distracted him so far.

"I did not, I told you. It was someone else. I'm sure one of the pokemon." He had definitely eaten the last donut, but he was HUNGRY and that was the best thing in the kitchen to eat. How was he supposed to resist that?

He counted down... "Double chocolate."

Then laughed, "Okay, lemon creme is really good too."

"I don't know I guess... I never actually imagined this. More of a reflection of myself than you, I swear." He glanced away, feeling a little exposed. He had often thought about doing just this, asking Lam to marry him. However, in the end, he'd wimped out. A part of him was still under the reality that he wasn't good enough. Lam had taught him to love himself more, but the ill-sentiment still snuck up in obscured ways.

In a way, he regretted it a little. "Yeah, I wish I had." Too many times talking himself out of it, but that didn't matter anymore. It was silly, in hindsight, ever being afraid of this.

Lam shuffled away, returning with the pinkest Stunky he'd ever seen. This wasn't the first pink pokemon that Lam had gifted him, even then the tears welled up in his eyes immediately. "Oh! Lam, I love her. She's adorable."

She might have skunked him immediately on sight, but even then he still hugged her to him. A few tolerated grunts at the affection, but he remained untouched by stink. "This is so perfect, thank you." He pressed a kiss to Lam's lips, over the fluffy pink tail of the Skunky.

"It's not right," He huffed, "My gifts aren't nearly as perfect as yours. I demand a redo."

Rook traded Lam a teasing glimpse that said: I just might, don't challenge me.

There was a quick flicker of a thought—Lam showing up to wedding in his yellow psyduck shorts and flipflops and maybe a button-down with a clip-on bowtie. Admittedly it was a cute thought. "We can wear whatever want, after all... it is our wedding, right?" If there was ever a time in life to do everything they wanted, it was now.

There was something freeing in that, being able to do as he wanted. Rook had always been scared of pushing boundaries, but never scared about getting in trouble. Not long ago, he had been an art thief. Hell, sometimes he still was a bit legally duplicitous. What was wearing orange to a wedding? Small fry.

Rook leaned against Lam, taking the kiss with an endeared sigh. There was always a little flutter in his heart, whenever Lam called him that. Rookidee.

"I mean it depends, the only time I've seen us fight was over food." Not entirely true, but he wasn't talking about the time he was arrested or when Lam got hurt in battle. It was easier to think about the goofier fights over who ate whose leftovers. It had been easier when he still ate meat.

"First flavor that comes to mind, count of three... 1... 2... 3...."

"Well I mean, it was far from what I was expecting, but it's sweet. You're sweet. I love you." He sighed, feeling like he was on cloud nine. This didn't feel real. He felt like maybe he should pinch himself, but he didn't want to threaten this reality. If he was to spontaneously wake and this moment prove illusory, he wasn't sure what he'd do.

Admittedly, it was unexpected because Lam wasn't exactly the most romantic guy in the world. He had his moments, clearly. But for the most part, Rook was fine with being the one to provide the romantic moves in the pair. To have Lam be the one to surprise him with a proposal was beyond perfect. "You know, it's funny though cause I thought I was gonna be the one to ask. Even considered looking for rings, myself."

Orange. Rook grinned at that, "Be careful or I might show up to the wedding in an orange suit." Not that he would ever dare. He was still stylish, even if a bit silly at times.

"A little Rook pidove topper, and a little Lam pidove to go with it."

Rook laughed at that, definitely picturing it. "How about a rookidee? Just like the nickname." That nickname always did have a way of making him swoon. Then again, Lam could have called him trubbish and he would have swooned.

Lam picked up Peaches and Rook gave a little scritch to the top of the psyduck's head before passing them. It was nice outside, perfect weather and everything. "So we still haven't agreed on cake flavor, you know. This better not turn into a cake fight."

Lam's contact had always been a lifeline. It didn't always come natural to him — the act of touching and being touched. At first, with anyone else, the contact might have provoked a flinching response. His life hadn't always been this gentle, but it was nice to feel the affects of reconditioning. Clearly, it was working.

Lam seemed to think that he was strong, even if the evidence pointed to the contrary. He certainly wasn't smart enough not to get himself burned, but he wouldn't change anything that happened if it meant that Lam was safe. His partner made him braver than he'd had any right to be.

"What does?" He said absentmindedly, sipping at his coffee mug only to realize he had already suctioned it down. "Are you sure these are the best colors?" Rook had spent most of the planning pointlessly fretting over details that didn't matter. It kept his mind off the explosive realization that he was about to be MARRIED to Lam of all people. How could he have gotten this lucky? He had no clue.

His eyes averted to the little pidgey clock on top of the stove. "Oh wow already?" They had spent a lot of time devoted to staring at colors until he could no longer decipher the difference between them. Cake selection had been the top of Lam's list of priorities, of course. Rook couldn't help but want to tease him for it.

"You totally should!"

As if it had ever been a question. The answer was always going to be yes, in every universe and every situation. There was no reality where Rook wouldn't say yes to Lam. Even though he felt, in that moment, quite dizzy. He was reeling a little with everything that just happened, almost as if he needed a seat. He steeled himself though, forcing himself to find his equilibrium.

Even then it felt like a dream. He felt like he wasn't sure anymore if this even was reality. Not long ago, he'd been nobody and nothing to anyone. No one had wanted him and then Lam fell into his life. Or, rather, he fell into Lam's. If theft could be called fate, there was no greater example of that.

Lam slipped away to place the pizza aside and he took the opportunity to compose himself, even if every atom in his body was feeling the distance between them in that second. It felt like he forgot how to exist on his own in that second. His heart thudded against his chest as a ring slotted onto his finger. "Oh Lam, it's perfect." Then again, Lam could have tied a broken rubberband on his finger and he still would have swooned.

"Why? Did you think I'd say no?" He beamed at that, knowing it wasn't possible. His hands whipped out to grab Lam's. "I love you more." He giggled, knowing it would only provoke Lam to respond in turn until it turned into a competition. He kissed him harder before he had the chance.

It felt like his brain had quit working, there was a loose wire or a bad connector. He could hardly even stand to breath or function normally. His legs felt jellified. Every working part of his brain stalled, even though he knew exactly what was going on. It wasn't as if he himself hadn't thought about doing it. Of course, he put it off as bad timing or some other lame excuse. He'd never would have expected Lam to be the one to propose first. Not that Lam was lacking in any regard, but he could be a little slow in his romantic gestures. Luckily, Rook made up for that tenfold in sheer dramatics.

He nearly dropped the pizza in his surprise, managing to cling onto it with a white-knuckled grip that nearly flattened the cardboard beneath his fingertips.

"Just bear with me a second."

"Yes," The word flew out of his mouth before he could even process the vocalization. Of course, it was ill-timed. Lam had an entire speech ready to go, but Rook had never been quite this impatient to answer. As if it had ever been a question of course. With every ounce of grit in his body, he remained patient. Even though the answer was already out there with any sense of dramatic tension. Lam never had anything to worry about from him.

Every word melted him slowly. Until he imagined that, without physics, he would be no more than a puddle on the ground making their pizza soggy. His heart beat and his lungs twisted up and butterfree fluttered in his chest. He'd never been more certain of anything in his life. Of course, he had his own personal doubts, that couldn't be helped. Surely, Lam would be happier with someone else, someone with their life together.

He swallowed up selfish doubts, "Yes, of course, Lam. Yes." He could feel the prickle of tears and batted them back with his hands. "It's not cheesy at all, it's perfect. You're perfect and I love you. Now stand up so I can kiss you."

"Cold like this always makes me want icecream." He admitted, as he seemed to more often eat icecream in the winter than any other time. The trip back was quick enough that Lam likely wasn't going to complain too much. By that point, even Rook was looking forward to get back. The lights were nice, but he could also watch his standard shows on television, which showed a hundred lit houses. Not to mention, that meant he could eat pizza and drink hot cocoa.

The pizza was stupidly cute. In a way, it was very Lam and he loved him for his goofiness. It hadn't been a long time since he'd taken the leap to transition to vegetarian, but Lam made it easy with the fun foods from time to time. "Yeah sure," He took the box, helping himself to a few spare toppings that had fallen off into the box. Lam hopefully wouldn't mind the topping thievery.

He flicked the box back down, not wanting the pizza to get unnecessarily cold. Only to find Lam kneeling down. "What are you doing?" He laughed, somewhat uncomfortable.

"Of course I saved you, silly." He laughed at that, wincing at the resurgent sting that rippled down his arm. It had cooked the fabric of his jacket, exposing bubbling and blistering flesh. It was gross, to say a little. The cold immediately seeped into the blister, freezing particles prickling the damaged skin. "Yeah, I'm fine. It's okay."

It was worth the pain, that could have easily been Lam all over. Rook shivered at the brief imagery. He didn't want to think about that, especially when nausea was quick to follow, churning at his stomach.

That dopey smile on Lam's face was more than a little distracted. With his good hand, he snapped his fingers in front of Lam's face. "I know I'm real debonair, but we need to move before anything else comes, right?" They still had plenty of pokemon left to save.
