Kosei would be lying to say there weren't things in life that he couldn't give Miu. It made him somewhat guilty that he was her only option and was often somewhat oblivious to her needs. He was raised strictly. There was no time for "Fun" in the Kiryu family. It was clear to him from an early state, that Miu was nothing like him, in that regard. She wouldn't have done well in his childhood household and the last thing he'd ever wanted to do was diminish her fire. He was reticent and controlled where she was excitable and opinionated.

Most of the time, fathering Miu felt more like racing to keep up with her and being left in the dust every time. There was space he'd likely never be able to fill. Though it was somewhat humorous to think that before her, he'd never imagined himself having kids. He had been too intolerant to nonsense and, admittedly, way too lazy to deal with it.

His eyebrows lifted in pleased surprise, "Yeah? Great, I think... I think she'd like that a lot." He smiled down, sipping at his cappuccino once more. "Oh no, maybe this was a bad idea." He laughed at that, not about to change his mind though. He took her offered phone and put in his phone number. "I'm glad you ran into me."

If he could have one person to deck in the face, it would be this guy. Enzo was so damn arrogant. Kosei wasn't sure if he could withstand the period of time they were expected to tolerate one another. Matters were only made worse that Kosei didn't know how long he was expected, only that the headmaster had high expectations for him. At the time, it'd made him feel determined. It made him feel good to be depended upon, but now he realized he'd just been handed garbage and told to change its form.

"Jealous that somehow you of all garbage people can get dates? Sure." He shook his head, "Don't be stupid." He wasn't jealous though, he was curious which was somehow worse. Maybe he was simply nosey though, trying to live vicariously through someone who clearly didn't give any damns. "Oh and I'm sure you're just full of boundless creative energy."

A part of Kosei wished he could be that way. Of course, he wished he could get away with stuff for once. Enzo fucked up and people rolled their eyes and got over it, eventually. Kosei fucked up and it was the end of the goddamn world as they knew it. Big fucking difference.

"W... well... no, I can't do that." He shook his head, clearly not about to go against his betters because someone like Enzo told him to. And then, almost as quickly, the other changed their mind? Kosei felt a little dumbfounded. That was almost too easy. He was suspicious.

He didn't trust Enzo as far as he could throw him and the discomfort of the follow proposition proved as much. "What kind of fun? What do you mean?" Still, he sat up, set the book on the bedside. He hated the fact he was, admittedly, intrigued by this idiot (even to a small degree).

There it was, so grating. He had half the mind just to tell the idiot to leave, give him some peace and quiet so that he could read or study or something, he didn't know. He didn't really have anything to study, having gone to study hall after school, and this book was clearly not interesting enough to keep his eyes trained on it rather than averting up to the aggravating person he was stuck with. "It wouldn't have to, if you didn't act like an idiot. It's not just you now, you know. That shit looks bad on me too." Kosei couldn't imagine the look on his dad's face if he saw a single smudge on his spotless reputation. It wouldn't be good. There were few things Kosei could claim to be afraid of, and that was one of them.

"Like where exactly? Unless you got a hot date... which I'm seriously doubting, there's nothing to do in town." His eyes averted to the other over the rim of his book only for a moment. Sadly, there wasn't a whole lot of privacy to be had in this place, not with another person living in it. Not that Kosei really had all that much to be private about... he just didn't enjoy unnecessary company that was a pain in the ass to deal with.

Kosei didn't think of himself as boring, but Enzo most certainly did. Which made it extra surprising when the other invited him along. "What?" The book slapped down against his chest, clearly abandoned. Now, honestly, not many people asked him to do things. He had friends, but his family was an intimidating name and he was... an intimidatingly serious person, at times (most of the time).

"And do what, exactly? No... no way, that's stupid. Curfew is... twelve minutes now. So... yeah, no."

This wasn't just simple reassignment. [break][break]This was a complete upheaval of his life, forced to readjust for the well-being of a cocky asshole that didn't want to be there. Why was that suddenly his problem? How come he was now responsible for someone else? Because he was somehow the "best person for the job." Or, at least, that was what they kept telling him. Who better to set the idiot with the worst reputation straight than the student with the best reputation?

Alright, sure. That was fine, Kosei could tolerate that. At least, he'd thought he could until he'd met the guy and then they decided that proximity was the solution. As if being in his general vicinity would rub off on the insolent bastard. vincenzo de luca was a reprehensible jackass. He didn't give a damn about anyone but himself, and that wasn't going to change just because Kosei was there to correct him. It wasn't going to change just because they forced them to be dorm mates.

He'd had it set before, a room to himself without anyone else to deal with. Things were so good before Enzo. Kosei didn't typically make a habit of complaining and, for the most part, he swallowed up most of the discomfort and annoyance that came with this sudden change. That wasn't always so simple though. With Enzo, nothing ever was. He didn't bother looking up from the book he'd been pretending to read since Enzo showed up. Though every once in awhile, his attention would coast above the tapered edge of the page. [break][break]
"Curfew is in fifteen, where are you going?" This was so unnecessary, but he wasn't getting his reputation docked because this bastard couldn't follow the fucking rules. Part of him, was admittedly kind of curious though where the hell he was planning on going at this hour.

Maybe if he could cut away the excess fat from all the expectation and responsibility, he’d be able to recognize that it was clearly holding him back. This was why he’d left, he knew that, obviously. It was, despite the loathing lack of comparison, “hard to train an old dog with new tricks.” Even if he really wasn’t all that old, it was still 19 years of weight that had suddenly shifted and he felt dramatically off balance. Enzo didn’t help matters, of course he didn’t.

The bastard couldn’t help but smell out his weaknesses like a carvanha, biting down viciously until he tasted blood. Every move Kosei made felt like a play in a carefully-crafted game that the other man was in full control over, and he didn’t like it. He didn’t like that he made him feel insecure or curious or even angry. No one should have that much control over him, yet he played into everything so easily. It was beyond frustrating.

Yet, even that realization hadn't kept him from pursuing curiosity and sinking into the water. It was apparently just enough to make him abandon his values and overlook the job at hand. Instead, he was sinking in the water like a stone, while Enzo regarded him smugly as he so often did. It was also in the annoying way where he was only half-invested in annoying him, which somehow made it worse because obviously that meant his attention was somehow important (it wasn’t).

“I’m not uptight, you’re just full of shit.” He muttered, maybe being a bit of a brat but he wasn't going to admit to that. He just wasn't prepared to lose at this game yet. Maybe it was stupid pride.

Kosei didn’t doubt that in Enzo’s experience, there was far worse. It was kind of hard to imagine now though, but maybe that was the point of Enzo’s illusion. All of him was so painstakingly committed to this image of luxury that no one would ever imagine a lifetime where he could be anything else, certainly not a street rat. Though, of course, Kosei wasn’t fooled. Admittedly, he coveted the fact that he was an exception to the written rule. He knew the truth, even if sometimes he still fell for the illusion.

With a huff, he added unhelpfully, “Yeah, well… I could have told you that. I’m pretty sure I did actually.” He added the last bit with an extra dose of cheekiness. “I do know the feeling though.” Granted, his responsibilities had grounded some over time. He had less to rely upon when it came to raising Miu or even his usual day-to-day work schedule. It either worked out or it didn’t, so maybe they’d both changed. Or, more likely, they fooled themselves into believing they were different.

Balance, he almost remarked further, even if he knew how it’d come out and how it’d be met. ”That so? Do I keep you grounded then?” Still, not a rabbit hole he wanted to jump down this early into the night. He’d leave personal grievances and his consistent sense of failure in the oven to bake for a bit. Instead, he retreated to the couch, but something else followed him there. Not just the other man. What a weird situation, to feel uncertain in his own home.

“Yeah, you too good now for grocery wine? It’s not box wine, thank you very much. I have some class.” He snorted at that, rolling his eyes.

“So, I been thinking… I’ve been wondering... what is this?... what are we?... this shit is driving me crazy... I know I’m not supposed to care but I do... You confuse me and it’s not fair... we've started something and I can't go back... I'm tired and weak and lonely.” There were a lot of things he could say right then. All of it the same weightiness that kept him from saying it. “So… how is it?” He gestured at the lasagna, rolling his eyes like the question should’ve been obvious. He forced another mouthful of still-too-hot lasagna so that he didn't say anything more.

Kosei had always been particularly hard on himself, a by-product of his parent’s teachings. He’d never wanted to be like that for his own kid and thus had done anything to prevent her from becoming as he was. Yet, the same could be said for how he treated himself still. Nothing was ever good enough and he was always a failure regardless of his actions or attempts to change. So, maybe what he truly wanted was to forgive himself a little.

He smiled at that response, finding themselves once again at the same cross-roads. Maybe they were destined to meet there from time to time. That was a nice thought, it made him feel less lonely about the journey. “You know I find that, sometimes, Miu has helped me with that. It’s easy for kids, you know, just to... exist perfectly happy, I guess. SHe’s definitely taught me a thing or two about it.”

He paused at that for a brief second, correcting himself hastily, “Not that I’m throwing my kid at you… just figured you two seemed to get along so… should you ever need the distraction.” He bumbled a little at that, feel a little awkward at the suggestion.

He had the opportunity to turn away, return to their room, and stubbornly do the job they were both supposed to do. However, there was always an equal risk of rushing a job, being in too quick of a hurry to get it done could result in failure as well. Kosei’s fear of failure surmounted his desire to get things done and also to escape situations that made him feel uncomfortable.

So, he’d just have to get over the fact that Enzo's well-sculpted and tattooed body was still branded into his retinas and get on with this torment. That, at least, he could see through until he just couldn’t handle it anymore.

Admittedly, he was also curious about how the hot springs would feel. He wasn’t that much of a militaristic dud that he couldn’t see something for what it was. The springs sounded nice. Though Kosei was not used to being allowed any kind of luxuries, he’d be a fool not to take the opportunity for what it was.

So, getting over his stupid feeling of insecurity and discomfort, he pushed through the door and was greeted with a waft of inviting steam. Okay, maybe this isn’t so bad. Sure, he’d have to put up with Enzo being smug, but when wasn’t the idiot smug?

“Yeah, well… I got this far. Not exactly the type to turn back.” He grumbled, sinking into the water. His body tensed under the sudden heat before simultaneously relaxing every inch of tension maybe for the first time ever. He found the closest ledge in the water and set there. Okay, so maybe this wasn’t the worst idea ever. Whether or not the sensation showed, he didn’t really care. Even if Enzo was certain to call attention to being right (sorta right).

"Well leave your commentary for after you taste it, yeah? Still might turn out terrible." He'd definitely made mistakes, like adding salt instead of sugar or vice versa. Though that was usually mistakes made due to the added pressure of watching an over-active six-year-old girl. Though, admittedly, he could feel himself preen a little with the compliments, well before the added affection had twisted him up inside.

It was a good sign though, right? That Enzo was doling out all of this affection. He hoped it was, at least. And why? Well... maybe because he liked this kind of affection from Enzo. Even if he still wasn't sure what it all entailed. Maybe the closeness had become no more than a casual thing. Enzo knew him better than anyone and he could only suspect the other knew what he liked. Puppy, he called him after all.

"Isn't that kind of the proof a hotel has made it? You're hosting godawful weddings and anniversaries. Sounds like you're a bigshot now, however will I measure up?" That sounded pretty damn awful though, but Kosei's temper was notoriously worse than Enzo's. Considering the other had come from nothing, he had big dreams. That had always amazed Kosei, considering he never knew what he wanted out of his own life enough to have those dreams.

Grabbing his plate, he nabbed two twin glasses to take to the coffee table. "Can you grab the wine on the counter? Not sure if it's good, but guess we'll find out." He waited for the other to follow and filled the glasses. Not with too much though. Of course, Enzo was laughing at him. "Stop it, I'm gonna kick your ass." Even then it was said with a smile, barely suppressing the laugh that wanted to break through. Though his daughter was still screeching like a banshee and crying like she'd stubbed her toe. It was all a lot and had Kosei cared less about being caught like this, he might have left and picked her up and asked her why she was making such a fuss.

Enzo came to his rescue, seeming to stretch out the time in which Kosei was being tortured, of course. He dropped back down below the top of the bed, feeling like a teenager getting caught. It was all a little ridiculous. Even from his stooped position, he couldn't help but note the way that Enzo was with Miu. It was, frankly, fucking adorable. She quieted almost upon contact, mumbling about how he took too long. What a brat.

He was thankful though as the door closed and he was given the opportunity to walk of shame himself about the room searching for his clothes. Boxers, pants, shoes, socks, uhh... Where was his shirt? Instead, he grabbed the last bit of clothing he could manage to pull from the tangle of sheets, which was most certainly Enzo's, not his own.

He paused before pulling it, he'd get over it. There was certainly no ulterior motive to his thinking than necessity. He pulled hair into a messy ponytail and then slipped out into the hallway. It took approximately two seconds for Miu to zero in on him. "DAD!"

"Hey there, lil monkey, you been good to uncle Enzo?" Why did things suddenly feel more complicated now? Oh yeah, because he was the bad one. Miu went on a lengthy tirade then about how he had taken way too long, but also asking if Enzo could go home with them. Kosei looked for the coffee, praying it was at least started because this was killer on his head, but not before trading a glance at Enzo. Maybe this complication was alright.

"Enduring something, can be its own strength. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself." He smiled, it felt like the first genuine smile in a long time. Not simply to seem like a better person than he was, because he wasn't better. Any attempt to feel that way made him feel like a fraud, but it was nice right then, not to feel alone. It was nice to be reminded that he didn't have to be perfect. "I think it's time we start measuring things by our own expectations, not someone else's, huh? It's a nice sentiment at least." They were alike in that.

The next question caught him off-guard, forcing him to think. "Oh huh... that's a good question." It was hard to think for himself like that. What would make him happy? What was the life he'd wanted to have? Well it was hard to imagine that life when his own had been either tailored by another or stained by his own mistakes.

"Part of me hates the idea of change because... if my life went different, I wouldn't have the things I love. I wouldn't have Miu. I mean I'm sure maybe I'd have other kids, more kids, a normal life. Though now, in reality, I'm kind of already at that point. I can do the things I wish to do, but it's just figuring out what that is. So, for now, I just want to make her happy. Sorry, that was roundabout way of saying I don't know, but I'm figuring it out. What about you?"

Kosei fully anticipated and readied himself for the teasing that was going to follow his wayward compliment and was entirely awestruck when the teasing never came. For a moment, he nearly asked what the other did with Vincenzo De Luca because this was obviously an impersonation of him on good behavior. Kosei wasn't about to object though, it was even kind of nice and let him lower his guard (maybe that was the trap).

The lasagna at least smelled good, even if a little over-toasted on the top rim. "I've always been a cook, I'm good at following directions, remember?" Anything with a list of ingredients or tasks with instructions, Kosei was capable of at least following it. Though, in retrospect, that didn't seem like something brag about and it only made him feel like the eager puppy the other claimed him to be. Granted, by continuing to deny it, he was only making it worse. He knew what he was though — boring, compliant, praise-seeking.

Enzo was affectionate. It was odd. Out of the two of them, he'd always suspected himself to be more seeking of affection; and yet, here was Enzo molding his body beside him, seeking out comfort. Still, Kosei wasn't going to object. He closed his eyes for a moment, focusing on the feeling of heat from the other man's breath on his skin. The memory of the other week was still there, a little relentlessly present on Kosei's mind. Maybe he was just horny and this was entirely normal considering being a dad didn't leave time for intimacies with other people.

Or perhaps he was just hopeful and Enzo was giving him little morsels of the thing he needed most. He hated that to himself, his question had sounded less like 'you've been busy?' and more like 'I was lonely and you weren't here.' How fucking needy. Yet, Enzo didn't seem to take it like that, which he was thankful for. "Yeah, Miu had a school science project and it made a huge disaster of a mess, but apparently her teacher was impressed by her.... unique art skills."

He sighed, enjoying the last moment of closeness. "Alright, dinner. It's gonna get cold so... table or sofa?"
