A nearby rustling in the brush signaled the presence of another pokemon, but Enzo ignored it. A short whistle drew Astra back to his side. His hand ruffled the dense fur between her ears at the top of her head.[break][break]
Quietly, he waited for whatever answer Yumi would provide. It seemed he’d touched on something that she understood. Which made sense, given that she’d never been too shy in talking about her grievances with her own family.[break][break]
He nodded slowly, mulling over her words. “I see.”[break][break]
The same couldn’t be said of his own family, left behind in Alto Mare. There had been too much time and distance and, very likely, bad blood. It hadn’t been the same, of course. He’d left of his own volition, without being booted out the door. Really, it was more probable that he would’ve wanted him to stay.[break][break]
But he’d been selfish and ambitious.[break][break]
There were some similarities he found in Yumi, held up next to himself. But that didn’t necessarily have to be the same.[break][break]
Regret for reconnecting and making amends with Kosei had been good for him. Almost alarmingly so. “You’re right. It doesn’t have to be. I think that is up to you. What you think will benefit you more, ultimately. Have you seen him much since he turned up?”

Cassius maybe huffed flames of EMBER to send it moving along quicker, but Enzo paid it little mind—allowing the houndoom to have his moment of entertainment at the ice cream pokemon’s expense. “Have you noticed any difference, in all that time? Even minimally?” Probably not, if they were out here again.

“I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t think it.” Pointed out flatly. And that much was the truth. Enzo wasn’t really in the business of entertaining foolish notions or sugarcoating things that were unnecessary. But Mint genuinely did seem to have a handle on what he was doing to some degree.

Was coming into his own, even.

“So you’re hoping to find Hoopa first,” he remarks, more to himself, than to Mint outright. “Do you think the exact location will make a difference?” Perhaps he was thinking much too hard about it, but then again, Enzo wouldn’t know. He wasn’t the science expert.

Enzo doesn’t miss the swerve away from the topic. But it doesn’t particularly bother him, so he goes with it. “Sure,” he answers casually. “It is about noon or so.” Maybe? He hadn’t checked the time recently. But judging from the height of the sun that did little to melt the snow around them, it seemed to be around there.

“Eight.” He repeated, idly pulling out his phone and making a note in it. “Certainly. I’ve not personally utilized rotom, but I do hear they’re often useful for those in my employ who have them.”[break][break]
He mulled over the suggestion, nodding slowly to himself. “Yes, I think that would be good. Smart call.”[break][break]
With his espresso finished, there was nothing left to do, but settle back and observe the other wrapping up with the remnants of his dessert. “For the glory of Rocket, as ever.” He’d been nothing, if not, loyal during both of his stints within the organization. Even if he was generally self-serving. Enzo rolled his eyes, but he did not deny the younger man the treat. “Stop by the kitchen on your way out. They’ll package a tiramisu to-go for you to have for later.” Because obviously they would succeed.[break][break]
He lifted one shoulder halfheartedly. “It’s no issue. I prefer to speak natively when I have the chance to. Nothing more, nothing less.” He stood up afterward, smoothing out the front of his suit jacket neatly. “Likewise. I’ll wait for your signal, accordingly.” A polite nod followed, professional as ever—no matter his exasperation with the little blue imp.[break][break]
Perhaps it was a bit endearing. At a miniscule degree, of course.[break][break]
After seeing the beast out, there was nothing left to do but go back to business as usual in the interim.

Another sip of his espresso drains the remnants of the cup. “Certainly. I can have the schematics prepared on a usb just like this one before you leave today.” His fingers close around the one offered in exchange, and he turns it around in his hands idly before pocketing it. “I’ll be sure to review everything and work out the information with my staff well before launch.”[break][break]
Enzo’s nose wrinkled in mild distaste at the explanation, though this was something he’d been briefed on previously. When the actual hosts of this advent had booked the space. “That I’m well aware of. Though it should be plainly obvious that a ballroom is not the place for battles.” Still, they’d paid the deposit, as well as footed the bill for preemptive damages up front. It was a good cash flow, so reluctantly, he’d agreed.[break][break]
The suggestion of additional reimbursement, however, drew a clever smile. “I should hope so. Any extra cash that goes into my pocket will be acceptable compensation.” Pushing his empty cup to the side, he clasped his hands and leaned forward, “Sounds like we’re ready to start getting feet moving on the ground.”

“A good companion,” Enzo appraised, nodding shortly. His hand remained atop Cassius’ head. The houndoom let out a low wuff of acknowledgement. He liked to think, that after nearly a decade of collaboration, Cassius would do the same. Not that he had any desire to allow the old hound to be frozen in this tundra. But of course, obviously Mint hadn’t had any say in the matter, either.

Idly, he watched Mint send the weezing forward on attack. Uninterested in catching the arctovish that lingered in the water nearby, observing curiously with its blank, mindless stare.

His hands clasped behind his back as he strode forward, still listening as he stood in the shadow of the Aggron and peered up at it. It was strange to think that all of this was coming from someone like Mint, who he’d only ever known to be loud and somewhat obnoxious. He glanced back over his shoulder at the younger man. “You sound knowledgeable on the matter, and you can speak to experience.” The hint of a smile hooked at the corner of his mouth. “Perhaps you should be the one to spearhead an initiative.”

“You’ve come a long way, Mint.” He paused, though, frowning softly at the suggestion. “Well, surely it’s communicating with something, somehow. If it’s been able to stay hidden for this long.”

The heat that had crept up the back of his neck worsened. Though he didn’t blush. God forbid. “Oh, but you would have met her father in passing. At your opening, if you’ll recall.”[break][break]
He left it there, allowing her to put the pieces together at her discretion.[break][break]
Meanwhile, he followed the tracking of his lycanroc as she crept up on an unassuming annihilape. She leapt upon it, THRASHING until it flattened in reluctant submission.[break][break]
Though he admittedly expected more questions of a pressing nature, the one he was met with came unanticipated. It was far more sentimental in nature. Less playful. Enzo’s steps slowed, turning to look at Yumi. Really, earnestly look at her. [break][break]
He wasn’t offended by the question—if he’d been honest up to this point, he didn’t see why he would change tack now. It was simply that he wasn’t sure what she was looking for in whatever answer he gave. Hope, maybe? A reason to not wash her hands of her own estrangements?[break][break]
“When it first happened? No, I didn’t expect it.” A wry smile hooked at one corner of his mouth, “And at first, I’m not sure if I really cared. He defected. I was…hurt.” The grievance was one he didn’t usually air out. The justifications for it had been reasonable, but it had left him feeling insufficient. Not good enough.[break][break]
And Enzo was far too proud to accept that sort of insecurity with grace.[break][break]
“It was vindictive, at first. That feeling of if he turned up again, I could have that I told you so moment. And I did. But it didn’t matter really, at the end of the day. I knew what it really was.” He shrugged, hands slipping into his pockets.[break][break]
“Why do you ask, Yumi?”

[attr="class","text"] Of course Kosei wasn’t going to let him slink away to lick his wounds alone. Of course. Enzo had been foolish to have even entertained it. The force that curled around his shirt collar and yanked pulled at his shoulder and embarrassingly, a wheeze of pain slipped free before he could stifle the sound. It was enough to make a bright burst of light ache behind his eyes. “Do you mind?” he groused as he spun back toward his work partner.[break][break]
“Obviously I’m going to take a shower and deal with this, okay? Reasonable enough. Now, if you’ll excuse me.” Violet eyes burned with thinly veiled annoyance as Kosei pressed the question. “It was work, obviously. We had a job, it got done.”[break][break]
He was understanding his own fumbles, of course. But Enzo would insist that the stupid hound had no need to get so wound up. Enzo had improvised, and even if Kosei had been caught in the crosshairs a little bit, Enzo was still the one to take the most hits for his spontaneous acts of violence. “How was I supposed to know the guy was apparently a part-time Houdini?”[break][break]
His cuts and bruises ached. His shoulder was on fire. The adrenaline and thrill that had come with upending the structure and order of their assignment had worn off, as most of his whims typically did, and now he was tired. He could sleep for days, probably. Something simmered under the surface as he watched Kosei with darkened eyes. The silent invitation to try him. May it was wrong for him to be growing as irate as Kosei, who had just wanted to do things with clinical precision.[break][break]
But that was so damn boring. [break][break]
So in Enzo’s pain addled mind, he decided that if Kosei had just played along then maybe it wouldn’t have been as much of a mess as it turned out to be. Not that Enzo considered it all that much of a mess so much as organized chaos, because, well— “Look the job is still taken care of, even if it didn’t go off without a hitch like you seem to be anal retentive as hell about. We’ll submit the report, and there’ll be nothing left to do about it.” [break][break]
His mouth hitched upward, but the crooked grin wasn’t a kind thing, nor was it reassuring or placating. “So chill out, hound dog. Heel.”

Kosei Kiryu would likely be laughing and howling at him for the display of anything but his typical ability of maintaining command of his words and composure.[break][break]

Still, there were worse people he could be divulging this to. He was, admittedly, rather fond of Yumi. She reminded him of the younger sisters he’d left behind.[break][break]

“That I do. They don’t often visit the hotel, as she lives in Slateport with her father. Or didn’t, rather. You might see both of them around more if you visit.”[break][break]

And discussing Kosei and Miu was…strangely nice. His newly realized domesticity was a sobering thought.[break][break]

“Ah, er.” Enzo nodded shortly, and cleared his throat again. “To Johto? No, but we still go back quite far. You’ll recall the work partner I mentioned a bit ago.”[break][break]

He paused, the jangling of a kommo-o’s scales disrupting the quiet. His lycanroc is quick to quell the noise, pulling down a ROCK SLIDE on it so that Enzo might trap it.[break][break]

“We had a falling out years ago, and only made amends this last year.” Understatement on both counts.

[attr="class","text"]Ambling onward, now with the added company of the elekid, Enzo looks around to see where it is that Astra has snuck off to. It is in doing so that he spots the unfamiliar pokemon, resting under a tree. "Never seen one of you before.." he mumbled, more to himself out of curiosity. He crept forward quietly, intrigued by the plume of colorful flame on its head. Before it could notice him and dart away, he threw a pokeball - banking on the element of surprise.

Enzo watches coolly as Astra examines a nearby cluster of trees, but he’s soon distracted by a tug on the hem of his slacks. Brow lifting, he looks down to see an elekid as it holds up his phone. When had he dropped that? “Ah, thank you.” Before he takes it, the Pokémon lets electricity surge into it, and when he looks at the screen, the battery’s been charged. “You can stick around, if you like.”

[attr="class","text"]He felt strangely prone having made the admission. Silence fell for a brief spell, and though he didn’t miss the smile that crossed her features as they continued their stroll, Enzo was careful to then keep his eyes elsewhere.[break][break]

But then of course, he’d a blunder with the camerupt and fumbled yet again. He wasn’t typically the sort to blush. More often than not, he was the one who sought to provoke that sort of reaction in others. But heat still crept up the back of his neck as his mouth snapped shut when it drew emphatic, yet genuine laughter from Yumi.[break][break]

How foolish was he? Such a misstep in front of someone he’d mentored? Honestly.[break][break]

Flustered (though he’d never confess to being as such,) his attention fixed on a combusken that had been drawn by the sound. With a nod of his head, Astra sprung forward again and subdued it with another round of STONE EDGE.[break][break]

Enzo cleared his throat roughly. “No, no. That would be the result of my, ah, goddaughter’s company.” A nervous laugh followed, “She’s six.”[break][break]

He paused, “Actually, apart from you now, her father is the only one around who knows where I’m truly from.” His glance returned to her finally, hoping the implication that it should be kept between them was clear.

He meant what he’d said in that hospital room. They were words he didn’t give lightly. Maybe when he was younger, and trying to charm his way into some overly romantic girl’s bed, but they had never been genuine. And he’d certainly made no confession of that sort to Kosei when they’d been…well, whatever it was they’d been as work partners. Friends. Whatever.[break][break]

At one point, in his frustration, Enzo could admit to the fact that he’d wanted Kosei to come back for the sake of winning. So he could feel superior in his rightness about his judge of the other’s character. But the truth of it had always been there under the surface. Even in the times he’d let Kosei close, only to push him away again.[break][break]

A loyalty he’d never given to anyone other than himself. Even Rocket.[break][break]

“Difficult as ever,” his tongue clicked against the back of his teeth as he tutted. Violet eyes drifted over, the coyness in his smile quickly hidden away. “And here I was, figuring that my need to have you by my side with more consistency would be enough of an argument.” Enzo let out a beleaguered sigh, “But have it your way—I’ll construct a PowerPoint expeditiously.”[break][break]

His eyes rolled at what he perceived to be willful resistance. It felt as though Kosei was being contrarian for the sake of being so. But he made no counter to the stubborn maybe, maybe not. Instead, he did the unexpected thing and fell into a sullen bout of silence instead. He’d made his points, he stood by them. Being apart did neither of them any good. And at that point, he was in less of a mood to be teased.[break][break]

A short huff followed, and he stepped away from where he’d been leaning into Kosei’s side. Deliberately, he looked away so that he couldn’t see the other’s smile and crumble. “I mean it, Kos. I never removed your name from ownership. I’ve missed you for far longer than I can to admit to, so spare me some of my pride.” His words dwindled to a grumble as his arms folded as he descended into a full on sulk.[break][break]

Of course, he had pride in spades. But this particular admission was more vulnerable than the others. It betrayed his long-standing desire to see the other return eventually. Desire, though some might call such a thing hope. He peered back over his shoulder, out of the corner of his eye, before quickly looking away again.
