Beet red wasn't quite Eduardo Hisakawa's color, but boy did it stand out against the white of his shirt. Gideon could have sworn he saw a flash of scarlet through the sheer fabric, too, though he did his best to keep his eyes level with the other man's, especially as he strode closer.[break][break]

"...it's fine." GIDEON GRAVES himself was mildly surprised by his lack of annoyance. This had certainly been an inconvenience — teetering on a waste of time — but that nagging phrase kept playing on repeat in his head. DRK TRIAD. DRK TRIAD. DRK TRIAD. [break][break]

"No harm done, in the end."[break][break]

And that was true. With Eddie's curiosity quelled, they could part ways amicably, probably to never speak again.[break][break]

Well, except for the scrap of paper being offered by an insistent hand.[break][break]

"Oh, uh," Gideon balked, momentarily unsure how to respond. He hadn't calculated for this. "Really, it wasn't—"[break][break]

Sure, he could have refused, but the word bourbon made him hesitate. What was the harm in just taking it, right? [break][break]

"...alight. Sure. I'll keep that in mind."[break][break]

Accepting Eddie's number, the professor slipped it into his cardigan pocket and then gestured for them to exit the basement. Several keycard-protected doors later and they'd returned to the lobby; in total, less than an hour had passed, though it seemed much longer.[break][break]

"By the way," Gideon added before they parted ways. "Say hi to Yuina for me the next time you talk to her. I'll be sure to mention we met."[break][break]

GIDEON GRAVES would have to verify with Yuina Higashi that Eduardo Hisakawa wasn't as odd as he seemed. Maybe get a little bit more background information from her, something to ease his mind.[break][break]

Just who had he let in his basement?[break][break]

Time would tell.

Hope soon gave way to visible irritation. It didn't take long for the other man to become discontented by what he saw.[break][break]

"I'm not sure if I should apologize or act relieved." He admitted, his eyes scanning the room for petrified Pokémon that weren't there.[break][break]

The professor was glad that their basement hadn't been invaded by some cyberterrorist, but also, in a small way, he empathized with Eddie.[break][break]

Momentarily stunned into silence, Gideon couldn't help but look embarrassed at being caught.[break][break]

Had she heard the sound of rattling glass when he'd riffled through his drawers earlier? Smelled the lightest scent of booze on his breath? Whatever the case, parker jones knew, and that made yet another secret between them.[break][break]

"...alright." But if GIDEON GRAVES was entirely truthful with himself, it was a promise he wasn't sure he could keep. Times were tough all around and alcohol was a way to cope. [break][break]

"Ah, sorry—" Pausing at Ollie's touch, the professor let out another shaky breath, willing the jumble of emotions tightening his chest to loosen. [break][break]

It was a logically true statement, but Gideon knew that his friend would somehow find a way to put a positive spin on things. Still, he hadn't been allowed to help, and that frustrated him.[break][break]

"Howard?" Dr. Graves called out over the small crowd, his eyebrows inclined upward at the tiniest degree — showing quite a bit of shock for someone usually so unexpressive.[break][break]

There was an uncharacteristic warmth to his voice, too, as he quickly instructed the interns on what to do next before approaching howard slayte.[break][break]

"Mr. Slayte has the right idea. How about... winner gets to choose their shifts this month? That should rile up some competition."[break][break]

Once the interns had scurried off, GIDEON GRAVES turned his full attention to his long-lost worker.[break][break]

"I wasn't expecting to see you so soon. What a pleasant surprise," The professor couldn't help but briefly scan Howard's body, unconsciously checking to see if he was indeed alright and actually safe to be outside of a hospital setting.[break][break]

"How are you feeling?"[break][break]

Meanwhile, CRISPR, his VIVILLON, fluttered over to where a SPINARAK hung from a thin thread. Showering it in SLEEP POWDER, the lepidopteran then worked to lug it back over to its owner. CRISPR apparently thought they were in the competition, too.

When Eduardo Hisakawa presented his phone for inspection, Gideon plucked a pair of readers from the collar of his shirt and settled them into place on the bridge of his nose. For a moment he thought his prescription needed addressing, as the "curio" was simply a blur of pixels on the cellphone's screen.[break][break]

"A Covert Cloak, you say? How... mysterious." He commented, willing his eyes to piece together the hazy image... to no avail. "It doesn't look like much to me, but, I'll take you at your word."[break][break]

It was all GIDEON GRAVES could do at this point.[break][break]

"Alright." With a sigh, the professor tucked his glasses back into his collar and smoothed his hair with his other hand. "Follow me, then. I suppose there's no harm in simply letting you inspect the basement."[break][break]

Eddie's talk of preservation and an ex? DRK TRIAD member had unsettled Gideon enough that he felt compelled to at least humor the other man. He turned on his heel, leading the way down a long, windowless corridor.[break][break]

Sterile, automatic lighting flicked on overhead as they went though yet another locked door and descended a pair of stairs, eventually leading them to the lower level.[break][break]

It had all the hallmarks of a typical museum basement: storage cabinets filled with specimens and artifacts, spare equipment and cases pressed against walls and shoved into corners, and other miscellaneous academic items scattered throughout. Nothing out of the ordinary, in Gideon's eyes.[break][break]

"...is this what she showed you, Eddie?"

Something flashed on the camera screen — an intact artifact from the field crew that had been assigned here? — and GIDEON GRAVES instructed his SLOWKING to go retrieve it.[break][break]

After giving that direction, the professor returned to his conversation with Caleb Harcourt. "Something like that. He was never very forthcoming with all the details."[break][break]

Pausing, the professor added, "Angelo was a great guy, but he held things close to his chest quite often."[break][break]

It made sense. With ROCKET and the DRK TRIAD among the players in Hoenn, you could never be too careful about who you trusted. Which was why Caleb coming to him with this was certainly a show of faith, in a way. [break][break]

"Unclear. This is all new territory for me. I suppose once the device is developed we'll have a better picture of how many shards are out there." A beat, then, "I don't think Angelo took the Soul Dew with him when he left the region. I'm sure it's in League custody somewhere, locked away."[break][break]

"Would you have access to it, as a ranger?" If not, perhaps ollie morales could secure VICTINI's soul shard for him to study.[break][break]

A splash of water indicated his SLOWKING's return. They'd managed to salvage something interesting, at least.[break][break]

"I assume Rocket has its nose in everything... if you're serious about this, I think it's best we continue the work as soon as possible."[break][break]

When Caleb Harcourt answered in the affirmative, GIDEON GRAVES extended a hand to consummate their partnership.[break][break]

"Then I look forward to working with you, Mr. Harcourt."
