Many of the expected species were within the quadrat: Schizachyrium scoparium, Bouteloua curipendula, Sorghastrum nutans. Something new emerged from the clumps of grasses, however, in the form of a SEEDOT.[break][break]

It was of a typical color for the species, unlike the SEEDOT from GIDEON GRAVES's last visit. Still, he appreciated the Pokémon for what it was — which was curious, in this instance.[break][break]

"It wouldn't hurt to collect a few representative Pokémon from this area," The professor mused, offering a Safari Ball for the SEEDOT to inspect.[break][break]

"How about it?"

GIDEON GRAVES brushed off his field jacket, a gesture meant to physically slake the adrenaline from the encounter from his body. Within moments the environment around him settled into its usual bustle: birds called, insects chirped, the wind blew quietly through the trees.[break][break]

The YAMASK balked after being hit by the disorienting wave of energy. It continued to punch the air, its aim erratic. This gave Gideon's ROTOM time to HEX it, ending with the professor lobbing a Safari Ball its way.[break][break]

The capsule shuddered several times, but eventually dinged!, signaling the Ghost-type's capture.

Better, GIDEON GRAVES admitted to himself as Yuina Higashi shook off her nerves and delved into explaining her stance.[break][break]

Bringing a thoughtful finger to his lips, the museum director listened intently, nodding his head in encouragement for her to continue where appropriate. When she'd spoken her piece he'd then shift in his chair, the leather creaking under his weight. [break][break]

"We'll conduct interviews for your team as soon as you settle in. It will be composed of established researchers as well as student interns from Slateport University." He knew several undergraduate and graduate students interested in the positions already.[break][break]

"Your Pokémon are a welcome addition, of course. The public always enjoys learning more when they're doing things up close and personal."[break][break]

With that, he opened the floor for her to tie up any remaining thoughts or inquiries.[break][break]

He was a little slow on the uptake. The professor realized a moment too late that the rock was inhabited by a YAMASK. An angry one, awoken unceremoniously from its slumber.[break][break]

Somehow, miraculously, his and Gunner Graves' parents had been spared from the destruction spurred on by Mt. Chimney's partial collapse.[break][break]

The outskirts of their acreage had seen some damage, but the main house was untouched. Even still, GIDEON GRAVES found himself lingering in his old bedroom after checking in with his parents, stuck in an odd headspace where thoughts of the past and worries for the future intermixed.[break][break]

From his creaking wooden desk chair, he stared out the window at a sky darkened by ash and soot.

Typically, these routine trips to the Safari Zone involved bringing various undergraduate and graduate students. Slateport University had been collecting data within the government-owned park for decades now to track large scale trends. [break][break]

It was the perfect introductory opportunity for students without much experience doing fieldwork. However, enrollment had been down lately; Gideon could only assume the reason was the consistently tumultuous events plaguing Hoenn the past few years.[break][break]

Sighing, the professor began removing needed equipment from his pack.

Once the SEEDOT was captured, GIDEON GRAVES continued on with his data collection. Next, he gathered a few glass vials from his pack and went to collect water samples from the pond's edge.[break][break]

It was there that he spied a SHIELDON drinking across the other side. It hadn't seen him yet — good, they were known to be flighty creatures at this stage. Opposite to their larger BASTIODON evolution.[break][break]

"Sshh. Quietly immobilize it, Scribe."

In reality, it was not a PIKACHU lurking in the brush, but a well-disguised MIMIKYU. GIDEON GRAVES only realized this when it came stumbling out into the open, startled by Scribe's DISCHARGE.[break][break]

It lashed out with a weak SHADOW CLAW, but a second DISCHARGE was enough to knock it off its feet and allow Gideon to capture it.[break][break]

The professor didn't get much downtime, however, as a second Pokémon appeared nearby, perhaps drawn out by the commotion. Noticing its unique coloration, Gideon nodded for his ROTOM to engage with the SEEDOT as well.

He was in the midst of checking the camera's footage and assessing if it needed a new battery when a pair of familiar ears popped up out of the brush in front of him.[break][break]

A PIKACHU? The thought reminded him of ollie morales and Tofu; unbidden, the faintest smile appeared on his lips.[break][break]
