He doesn’t push the envelope, but she continues to watch him with an even stare. As if she still expects him to.[break][break]

It’s for the better, probably.[break][break]

She doesn’t know how well and for how long she’ll be able to hold her tongue, where Uri is involved.[break][break]

Her glance flutters down to the envelope as it’s pushed across his desk, brows pinching together in thought.[break][break]

On the spot? Either he was impressed enough with her credentials, or he’s in that much need of damage control.[break][break]

She has a guess as to which of the two is correct.[break][break]

Thumbing through the contents of the envelope and skimming over the numbers, she can’t say she’s too impressed. “I think it could be better, honestly.”[break][break]

Cal taps the papers back into a neat stack and sets them down before looking up at him again. She talks as she does so. “If garnering quality public reception and improvement is as difficult as you say, why would the pay grade not reflect the level of difficulty?”[break][break]

It’s only as she adds her second point that the cool blue of her stare flicks back up to his steadily. “You yourself speak of the heights that could be achieved from the prestige of working alongside you. These numbers imply, mmm…mediocrity.”

She has to bite her tongue on the immediate urge to dart after Kieran for scrambling down the side of the crater without much forethought. It goes against the grain of her instincts to helicopter around him, but that’s soured things too much lately, hasn’t it? So she dials it back—or tries to, because there’s still a frown on her face for a beat longer. She pulls it into a smile by the time she looks back up at Uriah.[break][break]

“You go ahead, okay?” She gives his back a light pat and steps away from the edge. “Go see what’s down there. I’ll stay up here with Izumi.”[break][break]

Even from here, she can make out the message if she concentrates on it. Asking for a…seaborne shell? She hasn’t the foggiest what that might mean, so she looks up to where Izumi is perched on her braviary. “What do you make of that?” Asked, of course, as she points down at the bamboo stalk letters. Her meganium hangs out alongside her, watchful.

A tight, perfunctory smile slips across her face as she eyes him. Even, level. “Sorry—What exactly are you trying to imply, sir?”[break][break]

She won’t cave from a poke and a prod. If he steps on her foot, she’ll step back.[break][break]

“You’ll only be able to climb so high with him.”[break][break]

Inside the confines of her mind, Calla seethes. The childish part of her—the angry, protective girl who grew up in the throes of Kanto wants to hurtle over the desk and deck him for insinuating that Uriah is someone she’d be settling for.[break][break]

She isn’t stupid. She can read between the lines.[break][break]

She wants to throttle him. She wants to building him up and tear him down. Something something, the mighty fall hard, something, etc.[break][break]

But her hunger to tear through every obstacle and climb higher still remains. Her polite smile doesn’t faster beyond a slight twitch at the corner of her mouth that wants to twist into a snarl. “Well, as I said before, employment here at the league headquarters seems like an exemplary opportunity.”[break][break]

The blue of her eyes blaze back at him. She will not give him the satisfaction of it solely hinging on him.

The use of Uriah’s first name causes her to pause. Just for a moment. She’s sure it’s not meant to be a baiting question, exactly, given the lighter tone.[break][break]

Still, she blinks at him for a confused moment, then shakes her head. “CFO Black is much more amenable from the onset, if I’m being frank.”[break][break]

Her words are chosen carefully. Delivered neat and professional, as something protective and sharp flares up in her chest. She doesn’t wish to linger on Uri as a subject heading. Not for this.[break][break]

“How long did I last? You make it sound like I was driven off, or that he’s disagreeable to work with. But to answer your question, quite some time. It’s a good job.”[break][break]

Calla sighs, tutting as she shakes her head. “It’s wildly easy. At least this recipe is.” She’s not about to shove him into the deep end of pastry baking.[break][break]

One of her feet taps in time with the music, and she hums a note or two as she reaches for a couple bowls. One, she hands over to him.[break][break]

“You start with dry goods.” Which are obvious ingredients, yeah?

She has to resist the urge to let the high-toned sound of disbelief crawl up the back of her throat. Her head tilts as she looks at him. A tiny scoff still slips loose in spite of herself.[break][break]

“With all due respect, I disagree. Sure, the media might do as they will, but how do you expect your staff to respect you or do an exceptional job if you’re incapable of being straightforward with them?”[break][break]

Sitting back with a sigh, Calla’s foot taps in the air.[break][break]

“There’s no way to stop people from talking.” Her brow lifts, “Maybe act less conspicuous? That would knock out half the issue.”[break][break]

That’s an awfully specific scenario though, isn’t it? Maybe. Absolutely an opportunity for sensationalized scandal. “First of all, schedule talks with reputable sources to establish the proper story. Then fill your schedule with opportunities that aid your reputation and boost chance for photo media to cover these events.”[break][break]

A pause. “Of course, this only works if you’re careful and cooperative.”

She huffs, good natured. “I do not deserve you.” Contrary other instances where she’s thought as much, her tone is playful.[break][break]

Her face scrunches up like a buneary’s might, and she tilts her head enough to rub their noses together. Just for a few seconds. It’s a silly gesture, but it feels fitting for the moment.[break][break]

Relinquishing her loose grip, Calla slips off the counter to stand beside him. “Yep!” Scooting around him she flips the oven on.[break][break]

“Have you baked very much? At all?”[break][break]

Cal continues to flit around him, pausing to play music in the background quietly. Fun, poppy stuff and the like.

She watches him evenly, though the scenario he presents has her internally peeking up instantly. Though she does no more than lift a brow as she mull it over, the part of her that soaked up her journalism and written media comms classes is feral for if this is a true statement or not.[break][break]

Aka, she nosy.[break][break]

The last thing she’s about to do is miss her shot now. Lacing her fingers together, her hands settle in her lap.[break][break]

“Well, first and foremost, it would be important to have a meeting to lay out the details. What’s true. Gather a list of anyone who might be privy to the knowledge who might poke holes, or leak information. Then, we proceed with how to address the matters of your personal life with the media.”[break][break]

Calla pauses, still watching him carefully. “Groundwork can be more important than the final presentation in these situations. Especially in cases where details can be exaggerated or called into question.”

There’s a silent, smug part of her that wonders what it might feel like to be so promptly corrected. Perhaps that’s not smart to do in her interview.[break][break]

But even if she doesn’t stick this landing and end up with an offer, it will have been a satisfying moment. Small and inconsequential as it is.[break][break]

“Yes. To this level.” Sure, it verges on masochism, but she’s also competitive. And she definitely doesn’t care for being told she’s incapable up against certain odds.[break][break]

“Fine. Safe, secure.” By all accounts, that should be fine, right? She should want those things.[break][break]

But she is young and she is hungry. Eager to prove her mettle where higher stakes come into play. To show that she has the grit for this.[break][break]

Of course, there are other, more personal reasons too. But those have no place here, where they could compromise her chances.
