Though she knew Nikkari had enjoyed the conversation as much as she had, it was only the proper thing to say. [break][break]

She stepped off the bar stool and smoothed imaginary wrinkles from her skirts. When she looked up at her guest again, her practiced smile held notes of gratitude and appreciation. [break][break]

"Enjoy the rest of your stay with us, and have a good night," Yumi said with a rare affection. Then she glided away, slipping through the door and out of his sight.

No matter how skilled an individual was at fighting, no matter how well-trained, they were simply no match for Pokémon. All it took to subdue the pink-haired woman was a quick NUZZLE from one of the security guards' Pawmot, inducing paralysis. [break][break]

With eyes and ears on every floor of her casino, Yumi learned of the altercation almost immediately. She would have called the police to have the young woman arrested. Upon hearing that the guest had acted in self-defense, however, she changed her mind. [break][break]

"Bring her to my office," was her command. [break][break]

Yumi was seated behind her desk when security brought the young woman to her. The paralysis was starting to wear off, but two men still helped her onto one of the plush sofas flanking a low coffee table in the center of the room. They stepped back but did not leave. Instead, they hovered nearby, ready to take action in case the stranger remained aggressive. [break][break]

From where he lay curled in front of Yumi's desk, her Liepard raised his head and stared at the new arrival with measured caution. His mistress, however, regarded the younger woman with curiosity, not reproach. When she spoke, her tone was light, almost amused. [break][break]

"I heard you put up a good fight. The man you kicked is the host of a major late night talk show, but it sounds like he won't be making any public appearances for a while with how black and blue his face will be."

The woodland trail led to a large pond, the surface of which had not frozen over. As Yumi approached, she slowed her pace and scanned the area of any wild Pokémon. A flash of red beneath the water's placid surface caught her eye: Magikarp. [break][break]

She had no interest in the fish, however. After a brief pause to look for other Pokémon and finding none, she continued on. Her Gothitelle matched her pace with ease. [break][break]

"I want to check out that little field," Yumi told Kuroyuri, pointing ahead of them as they passed through a copse of trees. "Usually there are Pokémon playing there in the warmer seasons." [break][break]

The Gothitelle murmured something in her language and dutifully followed.

After collecting the Safari Ball with the captured Tatsugiri inside, Yumi continued down the path. It led away from the river, through a grove of skeletal trees. Their naked branches raked at the sky as a gust of chill wind blew through the area. [break][break]

A hive of Combee came to life, disturbed by the breeze. One drew close, but it quickly zipped away, returning to the warmth of the swarm. [break][break]

Yumi wrapped her scarf more tightly around her neck and strode on.

Having as a bodyguard necessarily required Yumi to develop an iron stomach. She did not look away as Lex's Bisharp cut through the three Mightyena, though she did not like it, either. In Yumi's mind, the torture and abuse of Pokémon was so unnecessary. [break][break]

Yet underground battles were part and parcel of the criminal world. She'd grown up knowing this. Still, she decided, then and there, it would not be part of her criminal world. [break][break]

As soon as Lex returned to the bar, Yumi hopped off her seat. "Thanks for making that quick," the black-haired woman said. "I'm dying to get out of here." [break][break]

Outside, Yumi took a deep breath of fresh air. Its crispness filled her lungs, purifying her. [break][break]

"I know a great little restaurant in the lower district you might like. Traditional Johtonian food. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but the flavors are authentic." [break][break]

She led the way, Gesshoku slithering at her side. The dilapidated outskirts gave way to the bustling nightlife of the lower district. More people were out on the streets, more businesses were open; the savory aroma of different cooked cuisine filled the air. [break][break]

Yumi approached the door of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant and ushered Lex inside.

Snow crunched beneath Yumi's boots as she led her Gothitelle down one of the easier trails, which snaked alongside a stream that babbled in other seasons. Winter saw it frozen, however, and Yumi bit back a laugh when she saw a solitary Tatsugiri attempting to break through the ice. [break][break]

"Kuroyuri, use HYPNOSIS on that poor thing," she told her Pokémon. "We'll take him home with us." [break][break]

The Gothitelle obliged, using her psychic powers to lull the Tatsugiri to sleep. Afterward, Yumi tossed a Pokéball to capture it.

Yumi breathed deeply of the crisp winter air. Though it wasn't her favorite season, she knew a walk to stretch her legs was better than staying cooped up indoors. [break][break]

It was this need for exercise that brought her to the Safari Zone. After purchasing a premium ticket and arming herself with Safari Balls, she released her Gothitelle, Kuroyuri. [break][break]

"Come, let's see what wild Pokémon we can meet today," Yumi said, gesturing for the Psychic-type to follow.

Yumi barely noticed 's return, 's appearance, and 's drive-by greeting, so focused was she on the game. She tried not to show any concern or hesitation as the dealer flipped over card after card onto the table. Her hand was not very strong, but perhaps she could bluff her way to success. After the fifth reveal, however, she knew she could not win. "I fold," she said with a sigh. [break][break]

In the end, neither nor had the best hand. Instead, raked in the winnings. Yumi perked up, brightened by the result. [break][break]

"Well done," she said to the grunt in the uniform of the casino staff. "You've saved the house from losing precious cash. Now, shall we have another round, gentlemen?" [break][break]

She shot a grin at Nikkari, mischief dancing in her eyes.

Yumi's smile faded as the weight of her ambition straightened her spine and lifted her chin. [break][break]

"Casino Starlight is my pride and joy, but it's only the beginning," she said with unwavering confidence. "In Johto, the Hasegawa name is associated with 'empire'. It will be the same here, too." [break][break]

Restaurants, hotels, gambling parlors. Yumi could have her empire by legitimate means alone, if she proved savvy enough. But more opportunities for wealth and success existed outside the law than within its boundary. [break][break]

She simply had to play the game well enough to come out on top.

Yumi frowned, but more out of confusion than anger. She did not understand why Lex didn't wish to remove herself from such a dreadful situation immediately. But if Yumi was going to speak with her friend for any length of time, she knew she'd have to wait. [break][break]

Patience was not her strong suit. [break][break]

"Fine," she said anyway, sitting back down on the stool and crossing her arms over her chest. Gesshoku slithered into place in front of her, protective as always. "But as soon as you're done, we're out of here." [break][break]

Her dark gaze followed Lex's figure to the ring where the fights took place.

Yumi shook her head at 's inquiry about , but before she could speak up, a woman she didn't recognize () joined them. 'Tori', Jayden called her. Yumi laughed, amused, at her blunt exclamation, then again at his retort.[break][break]

The casino's owner turned her attention back to as he cryptically confirmed that he had, in fact, seen a ghost. She raised her eyebrow at his sudden change of topic, but nevertheless slipped her hand through his arm.[break][break]

"By all means, tear away," she said.[break][break]

On the way, they paused by the enormous tree towering over the large pile of gifts. Staff were doling out the presents by random selection, and Yumi received a large box she suspected had clothing inside.[break][break]

Her suspicions were confirmed when she ripped away the wrapping paper and opened the box. She pulled out a black leather jacket, cut more for a man than a woman, with a Dratini design on the back. At once, her eyes lit up with the exciting prospect of a future project.[break][break]

"This is cute," she mused aloud, "but it would be cuter if it were made to fit me. I'll have to tailor it later." Stuffing the jacket back into its box, she handed it back to a member of her staff. "Put this in my office, please."[break][break]

Moments later, she and Nikkari made their way to the poker table where , , and were playing their game. was there, too, draped over the latter's shoulders.[break][break]

"Is there room for two more?" she asked the men, releasing her hold on Nikkari's arm to take a seat.
