A firm grip was what Yumi expected from a businessman. Between that and his attire, Troy earned himself a few points in his favor.[break][break]

Her gaze slid toward the tea arranged on the table. She took her seat and poured herself a cup, noting he had already done so for himself. "How did you know I'm fond of tea?" she asked, a smirk tugging at her lips before she took a sip.[break][break]

The taste was exceptional. Earthy green tea with hints of cherry blossom flavor—neither overpowered the other, but instead blended together in perfect complement.[break][break]

Yumi did not bother hiding the surprise from her face. "You brewed this yourself?"[break][break]

At the topic of Troy's business, she listened carefully. When he offered her the bag as a gift, she arched an elegant eyebrow at him.[break][break]

"From what you tell me, your business is legitimate, whereas I was under the impression this meeting would be about transactions of a more questionable legality." She rested her cup on the table. "Am I mistaken, Mr. MacQueen?"

Sure enough, a battlefield spread before them. A group of Pheromosa clashed with a group of Buzzwole, their attacks illuminating the desert around them. Yumi watched, entranced, until a few fighters from each group broke off and rushed toward the cave from which she and Danny had just exited.[break][break]

"They're coming this way," she hissed, grabbing her companion's wrist and pulling him away from the cave.[break][break]

Unfortunately, her tactic to avoid notice did not work. Screeching, a Pheromosa launched a LOW KICK at Yumi.[break][break]

A quick BOOMBURST from Tamahime, however, stopped the Ultra Beast from injuring the woman. It also knocked back several of the other Pokémon who'd swarmed too close.[break][break]

"Thanks," Yumi said to her Scream Tail, though she couldn't hear much else over the pounding of her heart in her ears.[break][break]

Then, as an afterthought, she threw an empty Pokéball to capture the Pheromosa.[break][break]

Yumi did not twist to match Verity's soft smile; she merely nodded her head. She doubted she'd remember the other woman's name—or see her again.[break][break]

Still, she offered her own name in return. "I'm Yumi." Glancing back into the water, she added, "I suppose we did a good deed today."[break][break]

She had no interest in staying to chat, however. A dinner reservation back in Mossdeep had her name on it, and she would not be late. So she exchanged her Sceptile for her Sharpedo, then recalled her Volcarona when she was safely on the shark's back.[break][break]

With a parting wave to Verity, Yumi said, "I'm heading back to shore. Good luck with your patrol."

A fisherman? Yumi almost laughed, but then again, Theo had appeared content to sit at the Magikarp game. She tried to imagine him as a fisherman instead of a Team Rocket underboss, complete with vest and bucket hat.[break][break]

She couldn't help the way the corner of her mouth curled in amusement. Briefly, she wondered where the line was between an executive and an underboss.[break][break]

Yumi shook her head. "I don't know. But maybe that book explains it. We can bring that back for one of the scientists to study."[break][break]

She stepped away and scanned the chamber for an exit. "In the meantime, let's get out of this place. It's killing my vibe. Tamahime, can you lead the way?"[break][break]

Eventually, they found a narrow corridor full of dust and cobwebs. After following it for a while, the ground started sloping upward, and a faint breeze suggested the surface was near. But with it came a strange noise, one that had Yumi frowning as it grew louder.[break][break]

"I wonder what that is," she mused aloud. The rocky tunnel had widened into a small cave, its mouth open to the star-studded sky.

While Mei went into her bedroom to check her phone, Yumi finally turned on the light. The brightness brought with it a sense of reassurance and calm.[break][break]

"A haunting?" she echoed. That made sense, at least. Ghost-type Pokémon loved to pull pranks. Perhaps someone's Misdreavus had gotten loose of its Pokéball and decided to play with its neighbors.[break][break]

Yumi padded into the hallway and looked around, finding nothing amiss. "It's empty."[break][break]

Just in case, she opened the door to the bathroom to check. As soon as she turned on the light, she noticed something scrawled onto the mirror in blood. REDRUM, the letters spelled.[break][break]

"I think our prankster has watched too many movies, Mei."

Theo did not look ready to leave the fishing game, and for a moment, Yumi wondered if she'd committed a grievous error in her assumption. But then he stood, handed away his rod, and gestured for them to continue through the carnival.[break][break]

They strolled through the crowd, weaving their way past children, friend groups, and families.[break][break]

"One day, yes. But first I have to put my name out there. Once my collections feature on runways and at fashion shows, rivaling giants like the House of Glaus, I'll look into the logistics of opening a store of my own."[break][break]

Yumi spoke with an avid passion that lit up her eyes and widened the smile on her face. For a moment, she forgot she was speaking with a Rocket Underboss.[break][break]

"But for now, the casino commands more of my attention." Her enthusiasm tempered to a cool confidence.[break][break]

Then, because she could not help her curiosity, she asked Theo, "When you were young, is this how you imagined your future, Mr. Beckett?"

Yumi joined Danny at the smaller tomb. The mummified body resting within certainly looked human, but in the light of their flashlights, she spied a hint of triangular teeth lining its jaws. She shuddered, gripped with an animal fear that told her she did not want to know what the person might have eaten in life.[break][break]

Still, an object tucked in the corpse's arm caught her eye. Her curiosity getting the better of her, she reached out and gently removed what looked like an old notebook. But it wasn't an ancient thing on the verge of crumbling dust; it was simply old and worn, as if well-used.[break][break]

When she opened it, she understood why. Notes in meticulous handwriting covered every page, from cover to cover.[break][break]

"Wait, I can read this," Yumi said, eyes widening with the revelation. "It's information about this world. Climate, land formations, the Ultra Beasts that live here…"[break][break]

She handed it to Danny. "Here. Take a look."

Before Yumi's eyes, a golden ring materialized in the air. She had no time to wonder about it, though, because a dozen Voltorb jettisoned out of the ring. Their angry cries filled the empty street as they crackled with electricity.[break][break]

While Hitoshi's Kartana and Honedge sliced through two of the spherical Pokémon, Yumi quickly released her Gallade. "Mamoru, quick! WIDE GUARD!"[break][break]

The air shimmered as magical shields surrounded Yumi, Hitoshi, and their Pokémon.[break][break]

The three nearest Voltorb emitted bright, glowing red light, then rocked the alleyway with several EXPLOSIONS. Despite her Gallade's protection, Yumi instinctively ducked, covering her head with her hands.[break][break]

Thankfully, dirt and debris bounced harmlessly off the shields.[break][break]

Unfortunately, there were still seven angry Voltorb to deal with.

No matter what happened next, she could count on him; she always had. His sword hand never wavered, and his loyalty remained unquestioning. And between the two of them, they had powerful Pokémon who would jump to their defense.[break][break]

"Red," she agreed, standing straighter, head held high and confident. She turned her gaze back into the unnerving darkness.[break][break]

Back in Johto, money laundering was one of the many extracurricular businesses in which the Hasegawa family had their fingers. Yumi grew up learning all the complex processes that went into the crime alongside her lessons on more legitimate business practices.[break][break]

She was, therefore, well positioned to negotiate a new money laundering scheme on behalf of Team Rocket.[break][break]

Her arrival was punctual. As she entered the designated meeting room, she regarded the man already waiting inside with a critical eye. Her Liepard did the same, prowling at his mistress' side. The subtle fragrances of his cologne and the freshly brewed tea filled the space between them.[break][break]

"You must be Mr. MacQueen," Yumi said, her tone professional. She extended her hand to shake his. "I'm Yumi Hasegawa."
