Girard released her and stepped away, shaking Yumi out of her reverie. With several slow blinks, she regained a sense of their situation, the pain of her cut a sharp reminder of what had just transpired.[break][break]

"No," she replied, shaking her head, though her tone was not nearly as forceful as it'd been before. She sounded as if she were still half in a daze. "I think I'll head back home."[break][break]

Dark eyes scanned the surface of the picnic table. Though Yumi had barely been halfway through her lunch, the Ursaring's attack ruined her appetite. After a moment's hesitation, she started to pack up the food, putting them away into the various containers in which they'd arrived. Everything could fit into one large picnic basket.[break][break]

Thankfully, she could teleport it all back to her apartment with the help of her Natu, which she released from his Pokéball. "Yochi, bring us home once I'm finished here," the woman instructed.[break][break]

But then Yumi paused, as if remembering Girard was still there. She looked up at him from where she knelt upon the cushions. Two words sat at the tip of her tongue, words she knew to say but had spent the majority of her life not saying.[break][break]

Finally, she blurted them out, her cheeks reddening once more — this time with embarrassment. "Thank you."

Yumi was indeed quite pleased with 's dancing. She parted from him with a satisfied smile, making her way to the bar to order another drink. After perusing the menu of specialties, she signaled for a bartender.[break][break]

"Give me a backforth club," she commanded.[break][break]

As soon as she received the gin cocktail, she swanned over to some of the plush seating. While she was not a wallflower, Yumi had been standing and dancing in heels since her arrival. It was smart to rest her feet during a small respite so that she could last the entire night.[break][break]

Sipping her drink, she spotted the leaf-masked man (@girard) on the dance floor with an older gentleman (). They seemed to be enjoying themselves, but like her earlier waltz with Gavin, there seemed to be no romantic spark between them.[break][break]

Good, Yumi thought to herself as she arranged the skirt of her gown for no reason whatsoever.[break][break]

But unlike with Gavin, Girard had not promised her a dance, nor even spoken to her that night yet. Would he approach? Well, if he didn't, she'd be sure to strike up a conversation.[break][break]

But first, she wanted to finish her drink at her leisure.

Shivering, Yumi eyed the drinks and snacks table again. As her Mimikyu continued to build her snowboy, she trudged over and poured herself a mug of hot cocoa. The warmth of the beverage seeped through the paper cup into her gloved hands, bringing relief against the winter chill.[break][break]

She returned to 's side with a second cup of hot cocoa in hand. "Here," Yumi said, holding it out for her friend to take. In the background, the festive music changed, and 'Santa Baby' started playing over the speakers.[break][break]

Once Mei had taken her cup, Yumi observed Kyogi's progress.[break][break]

"You made two bottom pieces?" she exclaimed, astonished and a little exasperated. "That's not how to build a snowboy."[break][break]

The Mimikyu trilled her strange, ghostly cry and tried to correct her mistake.[break][break]

She raised an eyebrow at his expressed hope she would return for more business in the future. Glancing down at the business cards stacked neatly on the counter, she finally caught his name. @bellamy.[break][break]

"I can appreciate your manners, Beauchene, but at least be genuine about it. That fakeness as you hide your disdain is obvious. If you're going to hate your customers' attitudes, at least be honest about it," she said.[break][break]

Enzo's question was innocuous enough, but Yumi's defenses went up anyway. She could not, under any circumstance, admit that she had no plan of action. That was a weakness.[break][break]

"I have some ideas," she said mildly. "It's been a big pain in the ass getting anything done in this region, considering how panicked everyone is over the meteoroid."[break][break]

The enormous space rock was now quite visible in the sky. Though the League boasted a plan to teleport it to another dimension (which was fucking ridiculous), Yumi had to admit: she too felt nervous about the close proximity of the satellite.[break][break]

The ballroom doors opened, and Yumi glided into the spacious chamber with an imperiousness that came naturally to her. Her dark gaze swept across the dance floor, seeking the familiar figure and mask of , known to her as Sir Knight.[break][break]

First, however, her eyes settled on the lithe form of . She guessed it had to be him due to his Dragapult mask and ostentatious outfit. The bell sleeves, the corset, the heels, the checker-patterned cape — everything about it screamed Fern. As to be expected from her friend.[break][break]

Yumi reached his side and tapped his shoulder. "Hey," she hissed, assuming that her guess was incorrect and not bothering to share her own identity. "Where have you been? Got any hot goss yet?"[break][break]

She glanced around again, and only then did she finally spot Gavin, who was still in conversation with the taller, wolf-masked man from before ().[break][break]

"I'll be back," was all Yumi said to Fern before striding off.[break][break]

It did not matter to her that Gavin and Temp were speaking in such a private manner. She walked right up to them and spoke directly to the former, ignoring the latter completely.[break][break]

Despite all her elegance and class, not even Yumi could stop herself from staring slack-jawed at @girard as he manhandled a wild Ursaring all by himself. Yes, his Houndoom helped, but the pawnbroker was doing most of the work.[break][break]

Was he really crazy enough to confront a wild Pokémon like that?![break][break]

So stunned was she that she barely registered the way Girard scooped her up in his arms and tenderly checked her cut. Thankfully, it was a shallow wound; it would not even need stitches. Still, it needed to be disinfected and bandaged.[break][break]

"I'm fine," Yumi replied when she finally regained her senses.[break][break]

As she began to restore her usual mask of disdain to her face, she placed a hand on his upper arm to push him away. But as soon as she made contact and felt the hard muscle of his bicep under her palm, she faltered.[break][break]

Girard was warm, solid, and so very close. Yumi glanced up through long lashes into his eyes, her face flushing with a rare heat.

Standing to the side of her snowboy, Yumi watched as Mei's Swablu brought over a red-berried branch for decoration.[break][break]

"Yours is looking pretty good," Yumi commented, her dark gaze sweeping over the other woman's snowy creation. There was no hint of jealousy or malice in it. "Did you ever make them when you were a kid?"[break][break]

As someone who hated stomping around the snow, Yumi had grown out of such games by the time she was a teenager. That was precisely why she was content to let her Mimikyu do the building. Mei, on the other hand, seemed to be genuinely enjoying herself.[break][break]

The way the lights illuminated it caused the surface to glitter, reminding her of a cold winter's night during her childhood. She had witnessed the aurora borealis then in its full glory, its beauty captivating her.[break][break]

A falling out was an accurate way to describe what had happened, though Yumi raised an eyebrow at Mei's suggestion her family had hurt her in the process. The long-haired woman chewed and swallowed another mouthful of the delicious ziti before speaking, giving herself time to formulate the best answer.[break][break]

"I'm perfectly fine," Yumi said in a calm and untroubled tone. "Do I look like I'm not?"[break][break]

The truth, which she continued to deny, was that she was hurt. Betrayed, even. Her parents had seen her as mere chattel, a pawn to play in the grand schemes of their making. They had poured decades of their life into ensuring she was a prize to desire, that she wouldn't tarnish the Hasegawa name with mediocrity.[break][break]

And her grandfather? He had loved her most dearly only to abandon her most viciously when she had no allies.[break][break]

Yumi sipped her lemonade. While she wasn't fond of sour things most of the time, at that moment, its tartness reflected her inner landscape most acutely.

The spray of blood did nothing to faze Yumi. She stared imperiously down at Cal as Parker held him against the table, her expression full of loathing and contempt. Around them, other night market vendors and customers turned away or avoided the scene entirely. No one wanted to intrude on another man's punishment.[break][break]

Cal blubbered his apologies around saliva and blood. Yumi heard them but said nothing. When he finally gave up information about his stash, she merely took out her phone and tapped out a note for later reference.[break][break]

"See? Wasn't that easy?" Yumi finally said as the phone disappeared back into her purse. "You could have spared your face if you'd just given that up right away. You'll be more cooperative in the future, won't you, Cal?"[break][break]

He nodded his head vigorously.[break][break]

Yumi looked at Parker, more than a little turned on at the other woman's display of force. A sly smile crept its way across Yumi's face. "I think we're done here, unless you want to give the man a parting gift?"

Yumi rolled her eyes at Mei's implication that Yumi was going to buy a gift for 'someone special'. "Just you and my friend . Oh, and I guess I'll get one for my boss, too."[break][break]

Yumi's parents had always emphasized the tradition that members of the lower ranks should give their superiors a nice gift for certain celebrations. Tradition, tradition, tradition. The constant nagging about it made her want to flout it.[break][break]

But was a good boss — more of a mentor than an employer, really. Instead of caging her, he allowed her to flourish and hone her skills. She supposed he deserved a little show of her gratitude.[break][break]

"I'll get you the makeup bag if you get me some new lipstick," Yumi said to Mei. Though they lived in a small apartment complex in Slateport, Yumi had a hunch the other woman had the means to afford more. "I'm almost out of my favorite red."[break][break]

At her side, Kyogi continued to roll together snow for her snowboy.[break][break]

"No," she said. She'd never found a good reason to hide her true intentions before; she wouldn't start now. "I'm good at social media, and I find it fun. But I am capable of bigger and better things."[break][break]
