[attr="class","samjermain"]She’d only intended to pick up Alastor. The lizard—tired of dealing with a grumpy toddler—had commandeered a front-row seat to the dunk tank. The child was currently spending time with her father at the midway. In a coed of people with wet clothes, the lizard’s open frill stood out like an obnoxious umbrella.

For a moment, Aubre settled into the worn wood next to him. She watched as a young woman hit the water followed by a man who looked remarkably like a gym leader. The next attempt was a miss. A development she was certain the young men welcomed.

With each splash, the doctor winced. She hoped the water was warm Some part of her hoped everyone missed.

The point is to hit the target, you addled Mareep. Just because you cannot stomach it does not give you the right to rain on their parade. Her contemplations ended with a sudden punch to the ribs. She turned to face her attacker—the electric lizard next to her. “Alastor! That hurt! If you keep being so unruly, I will put you in the ball." That threat was meant with a snicker. Not only would she never do that but the thing didn’t even have a lock on it.

Instead of apologizing, he gestured vehemently to the dunk tank. He made his eyes big and begging. Then, he pointed from her to the line. “Al, I don’t think I could—” She swallows. “It feels awfully rude.” Rolling his eyes, he then gestured to the people laughing as they clambered out of the water. Sponsored towels were wrapped around them. “Well, yes, they do seem to be having fun.”

She’d brought a change of clothes n her bag. And it wasn’t like Alastor asked her for much. Besides it wasn’t like she would hit the thing.

Aubre gave an apologetic smile to the man on the bench. “I'm really sorry about this.” With a deep breath, she drew back her arm and threw.

Karma demanded she climb up on the bench soon after. From his perch, the lizard flashed her a double thumbs-up.

[attr="class","samjermain"]In moments like this, Aubre uncovered a strength she did not know she had. It happened the night she confronted her husband about his darker affairs. It kept her conscious and alive as hellfire ripped into her flesh for what felt like an eternity. And, at this moment, it turned her arms into an iron ring beneath the teenager’s arms. Fortunately, she did not need to support them for long.

Strong arms wrapped tightly around her, pulling her tight against the Swampert’s light blue belly. With a sigh of relief, she tilted her head back. A maternal kiss planted itself on the axolotl’s orange fins. “Thank you, Serena. You’re a lifesaver.” A deep rumble and head shake served as the water type’s responses. She saw nothing in need of thanks. It was not as if she’d let anybody drown.

The redhead’s eyes caught on a dark lump in the water. She turned worried eyes to the Swampert—some part of her grateful the young man had not bashed against them. If he had been knocked out, well, this would be more retrieval than rescue. “Watch out for the rocks, all right?” Knowing her ‘mother’ found comfort in fretting, the axolotl simply grunted in acknowledgment. This sound coincided with Axel’s first coughing fit.

Aubre’s eyes widened as she leaned closer to him. “Hey—um—” What’s his name? It’s not the best time to ask, is it? She tried to reassure him. “Just try to breathe, okay?” Apparently, aerobic activity did nothing to quell that voice in his head. Let’s just tell a drowning person to breathe. Why not just tell a depressed person to stop being sad? Or ask someone to just unbreak a leg? Falling into an awkward silence, she settled for a comforting squeeze. Fortunately, the water quickly gave way to sand.

It took a moment to convince her arms to open. With a worried glance, she watched the boy reunite with his drenched Zoroark. A hand reached out to gently stroke her Kabutops scythe. “Thank you, Roman.” He turned away—bashful and embarrassed. Somewhat awkward, the trainer stood waiting for attention to drift her way. I didn't do much really. He should be thanking the Pokemon.

“I’m Aubre. This is Serena and Roman.” She forced a smile. “I'm glad to see you two are all right.” A sea breeze blew across her mostly bare back, coaxing phantom pains into being salt nipped at raw skin.

[attr="class","samjermain"]If you were to graph Aubre and Arthur’s personalities, it’d be more circle than Venn Diagram. So, the fact that their faces reacted the same at this strange encounter, should come as no surprise. Brown and green eyes flicked between the other occupants of the glade with visible confusion.

Only the galloping of the Rapidash broke the doctor’s attempt at deciphering the situation. With this, the senses of the glade crashed down around them. She reflexively tightened her grip on the Farigiraf’s velvety fur. The psychic type, meanwhile, pressed its ears more tightly against its skull. The very air around them vibrated with the force of the Yanmega’s wingbeats. It made her teeth hurt and rattled both her keys and the couplings on her satchel. “Should we—?” The question was directed at the leggy creature beneath her.

Something about this encounter felt almost private—as if she had stumbled in on two people engaged in hanky-panky. Then, of course, there was the very unforgiving nature of the suit itself. It may cover the skin, but it really left little to the imagination. Seemingly sharing that thought, Arthur moved to retreat. But Shalin’s whoop of exaltation put an end to all of that. It seemed rude to back away now.

The feeling of being stuck intensified when it was revealed Shalin had heard her enter. At the question, Aubre forced a small smile. “I’m—I’m glad to hear it. We were worried someone was hurt.” Or, judging by the fact that it had been an attack, hurt. Which, now that she thought about it, was probably something she should have ran away from. It wasn’t as if she could do much of anything on a battlefield. She’d just get in the way.

The Farigiraf wrinkled his nose as the remnants of Infinity Energy dissipated.

“What is it you were doing? It—well, it seems to have taken a toll.” She turned toward the Yanmega. “I mean—isn’t it safer to ride on your Yanmega’s back?”

[attr="class","samjermain"]Green eyes widened as the other gate opened. She made out the lion’s mane first. There he is. Deep breaths. The figure of the gym leader seemed far more imposing here--surrounded by his kingdom. Some part of her was tempted to curtsy to the Master of Faster—who felt more like a king at the moment.

Aubre wiped her hands on her trousers again. At this point, she was surprised the moisture had not bled through. The ginger girl bobbed her head at Aslan and the man beside him. Not quite trusting her voice yet, she lifted her hand in a shy wave. “I’m glad to see he is doing so well.” Let’s hope your Pokemon end the night the same. You know how much can go wrong—especially with you at the helm. Aslan’s purr drew her attention; the distraction allowed her to silence the negative talk.

At the talk of racing, she fought the urge to purse her lips. It was the lion’s choice to put himself in harm’s way. Hopefully, the man did not push the fire-type too hard. Old injuries had a nasty habit of flaring up. As if proving her point, the dull pain in her back intensified.

While he rattled off the rules—which she knew—her mind fixated on a certain d-word. Death.. The doctor knew such things were extremely unlikely, but that still wasn't a very comfortable thought. Every one of her Pokemon were family members. Serena was her niece. Maggie was a cousin. Alastor was an annoying younger brother. He means if there’s a tie. You know that.

Here we go. The clock sparked to life. On the big screen, her image looked different. It was like staring into a window into the past—an alternate reality where she traded the textbooks for training manuals and gym battles.

With a nod of greeting, the redhead drew her arm back and released two Pokemon onto the field. "Maggie! Serena! Come on out!" The Swampert and Jumpluff immediately drew close—the latter hovering around the axolotl’s broad face like a satellite. And both, unlike their worrywart of a trainer, were grinning.

Green eyes narrowed slightly as she revealed Plan A, Plan B, and the gazillion other contingencies she tried to cobble together. Not that she thought Josh would give her a chance to ponder them. As the gym leader’s Pokemon took the field, she would let out a short whistle.

The Swampert moved first, unleashing an ear-ringing Screech.

[attr="class","samjermain"]She wiped her hand on her cardigan for what felt like the hundredth time. But they still glowed with sweat. Occasionally, green eyes darted back to what she could see of the audience. The mumbles of a hundred different conversations wired into a virtual hornet hive of conversation. It didn’t look so crowded from up there. Aubre knew most people wouldn’t remember her name tomorrow. She knew they weren’t here for her. Everyone cared about Josh.

Her mind didn’t care. It knew that everyone was about to watch her make a fool of herself. Gods, she hoped Michaela didn’t remember this.

Once upon a time, this was all she wanted. She wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a mentor to young, wide-eyed children like her. This meant facing challenges like this head-on. But, after a few months of battling school, that fire snuffed itself out. There might be glory in battle, but her heart didn’t feel it. All she saw was her best friends getting trampled on and set on fire. Then, the incident sent the sails of that dream fully slack.

But, apparently, it never left the Pokemon who started the journey with her. A few of them wanted to give battling a try. Their hearts were still in this stuff. The souls were those of warriors. And, if she was as equal rights as she claimed, it wasn’t her right to try and make them fit her ideals. So, in the end, Maggie got what she wanted. Then, Serena and Al jumped in.

A small shout from near the arena’s edge drew Aubre’s attention. Her hand lifted in a wave as her daughter waved her hastily colored sign. If you cannot do this for yourself, at least try to for her. A slightly colder, tighter smile was offered to her husband—his hand laying on the bench between the toddler and the next person in line.

All of a sudden, the energy of the place changed. It was like someone had set off a bunch of firecrackers or started up a Tesla coil. Before she turned, the redhead knew that Josh was there. I really hope he remembers that League agreement. He sees a hundred people a week, but it was done to protocol. Gods, how many times had she gone over the rules in the past week?

Even if she didn’t want to be here, she had tried to study up. The perfectionist in her wouldn’t let her shirk anything.

[attr="class","samjermain"]With its enemy vanquished, the Jumpluff took a moment to celebrate. It bobbed around its trainer’s head—trilling and clapping its cottony blooms like pom poms. It even went so far as to blow a raspberry at the shaking foliage trail the Drapion left behind. Trying to hide her smile—and gratitude—Aubre tried to remind her friend of her manners. “Maggie, it’s not polite to gloat.” And, if karma had its way, it’d soon throw something far worse their way.

Maybe a fire-spitting Charizard or a creature with venom capable of melting her face off? A dragon-type? Though a logical person—or hoping to be one—Aubre could not resist the occasional bout of superstition. Most of these revolved around karmic and statistical balancing. Above her, the Jumpluff let out an unhappy little sigh. Its flipper feet kicked her off higher into the air above. The sad expression wrung her heart like a dirty dish rag.

You didn’t even say thank you first. What an ungrateful ass!. Her teeth chewed at her bottom lip. “Maggie—” The grass-type stubbornly tilted her chin back. But Aubre could tell she was listening. “I appreciate you jumping in like that.” After all, the bug could have easily disemboweled the ball of fluff. It wasn’t like she was in danger way up in the sky. She’d only jumped in to keep Aubre safe.

A gasp tore from her throat as something stumbled into the path in front of her. The Parasect—seemingly newly evolved—staggered like a drunk. It rattled its pinchers at her. But in those white eyes, she could see pain. Right now, the erupted parasite was likely trying to bust into its brain. “Seeeeeect!” It hissed, lashing out. It shook its head from left to right. Ignoring its fear, she tiptoed forward.

Shushing sounds emerged from the doctor’s mouth as she gently reached a hand out toward the bug type. A berry—mushed—stained her fingers a deep violet. She winced as it clamped down on her hand, a paralyzing powder making her limps tingle. “I can help you with that.” She smiled softly. “Want to come with us and feel better?” There was no curing the parasite, but it could be curtailed.

It was better than leaving it out here to die. And, hey, she did have a treatment area just open back up.

Above, glowing with an attack, the Jumpluff readied itself to unleash hell on the fungi Pokemon.
