JOSH DEVLIN RACING GROUNDS QUICK BADGE RACING THEME [player]https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-gamecube-gcn/f-zero-gx/239%20-%20Wings%20For%20My%20Way%20%28GX%20Advertise%29.mp3[/player] Wings For My Way - F-ZERO GX OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK GYM DETAILS
[break][break]
THE RACING GROUNDS are located on the north city line of MAUVILLE CITY, A small office building overlooks an outdoor facility for Pokémon races of all kinds. The facility is run by Josh Devlin , the "Master of Faster" and is open for trainers that want to get into racing Pokémon to do so on courses that are easy for newcomers to learn on but are still challenging to master.[break][break]
There is a grassy and hilly course for overland Pokémon to run on, a river-based course for water-types to swim through, and an aerial course sprawling above the entire facility for flying Pokémon to compete on. On the green beneath the aerial course is a triple regulation-sized, well-maintained grass arena for traditional battles. It gives the challenger's Pokémon plenty of room to maneuver, but it also gives the Leader's Pokémon plenty of room to utilize their superior speed. There are no obstacles to hide behind, either; the arena is completely wide open.[break][break]
The Gym Leader does not favor a particular type; instead he focuses primarily on Pokémon with very high speed. Expect to see Electric, Fire, Flying, and Dragon-type Pokémon, but particularly Electric-types.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE IN ADDITION TO SHARING HIS LOVE OF POKEMON RACING, the Gym Leader's goal is to develop the ability to make split second decisions, develop trust of one's instincts, foster teamwork beyond what a simple Pokémon battle can, and most importantly, level-headedness under pressure. This is embodied by the fast-paced nature of the Leader's battles and the non-traditional challenge of a race.[break][break]
RULES THE FACILITY IS LARGE ENOUGH to accommodate most large Pokémon, but if it's something excessively large such as a Wailord or Steelix, they will not be allowed for NON-TRADITIONAL CHALLENGES. If you have questions on what is and isn't allowed, just ask![break][break]
Any instances of a challenger maiming, injuring, or killing a Pokémon will be meant with an automatic disqualification.[break][break]
[attr="class","ynospace"] - NEW 10/19/24: Legendary Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, Paradox Pokémon, etc. are permitted to be used for all challenges. For every "rare" Pokémon the challenger uses, Josh will use one of his. He has enough of them that he will be able to use the same number of them as a challenger does (even a full team of them, if you want!)
- Use of the Dynamax Phenomenon is forbidden for Non-Traditional Racing Challenges.
- Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Dynamax, and Terastallization are allowed except where explicitly forbidden. The Gym Leader will use the same number of site mechanics as the challenger deems allowed, but not necessarily the same ones. Ex. The Gym Leader may choose to utilize their Tera Orb if the challenger uses Mega Evolution.
- NEW 10/18/24: While allowed, the use of Shadow Pokémon is strongly discouraged.
- During the first turn, the trainer that sends their Pokémon out first will make the first move.
- PERISH SONG and DESTINY BOND are forbidden by the Pokemon League.
- A challenger who has not posted on a Gym Challenge for 7 days is assumed to have forfeit their challenge, with one exception (see below). There will be a pool of 14 cumulative extension days available per challenge. For instance, if you do not post on a Gym Challenge for a 16-day period, 9 of those 14 extension days will be used, leaving 5 extension days for the remainder of the challenge. I will be giving reminders via Discord DM or server ping for deadlines that are approaching, generally within 48 hours of the deadline.
- Any challenge that runs out of extension days is subject to archival. As long as there are no challengers in queue for your challenge type, the thread will be allowed to continue. However, as soon as a waiting challenger creates their gym thread, if there is a thread with zero remaining extension days and its latest post is more than 7 days old, that thread will be archived to make room for the new challenger's thread, regardless of current progress.
- If the Gym Leader does not post in a challenger's gym thread for 14 days, it is assumed the challenger was victorious, and the Quick Badge will be automatically awarded.
- Challengers that fail to earn the QUICK BADGE (whether by missing a deadline or for narrative reasons) will be permitted to re-queue for a new challenge after 45 calendar days have passed from the day of the final post of the previous challenge. This also applies to challengers who fail to post their Gym thread within 7 calendar days of their challenge being approved. This is to encourage character development between challenges and incentivize challengers to post within deadlines.
- If you have an active gym thread and know you are going to be away from the forum for an extended period of time, please let me know ahead of time with the date of your anticipated return, and I will suspend your challenge. After you return, your challenge will resume as soon as another challenge finishes; there will be no need to return to the back of the queue. In order to take advantage of this feature, you must specify a date upon which you want your challenge to resume. Once your challenge resumes, you will have 3 days to make your first post from where the challenge left off. Otherwise, your thread will be archived. From there. the normal response time rule will apply.
TRADITIONAL CHALLENGE THE FOLLOWING FORMATS are available for challengers:[break][break]
[attr="class","ynospace"] - 2v2 Singles
- 3v3 Singles
- 2v2 Doubles
- 3v3 Doubles
- 4v4 Doubles
[break][break] If no format is specified by the challenger, the format will be 2v2 Doubles.[break][break] Josh's Traditional Battle style is incredibly fast-paced, attempting to confound his enemies with blistering speed. His Pokémon's attacks are almost invisibly fast and require split-second timing to counter.[break][break] He does have some defensive tactics to cover against his glaring weakness to Ground-type Pokémon, but his battle strategy is generally to hit as hard and fast as possible. The only decision a challenger will have time to ponder is the first Pokémon to be used in the battle.
NON-TRADITIONAL CHALLENGE
ALL FOUR of the Leader's non-traditional options are Pokémon races:[break][break]
[attr="class","ynospace"] - A race with land Pokémon on a ground-based course
- A race with aquatic Pokémon on a river-based course
- A race with flying Pokémon on an aerial course
- A race with a legendary or mythical Pokémon on a special course
[break] All Non-Traditional Challenges require the challenger to use a Pokémon that could reasonably carry them using the method of locomotion corresponding to the selected challenge. Teleportation, portals, and any locomotion method other than the one specified in the challenge cannot be used (e.g. no flying in an overland race).[break][break] A complete list of the courses at Mauville Racing Grounds is located here.[break][break] CHALLENGERS WILL BRING ONE POKEMON to these challenges, and will be competing against four of the Leader's Pokémon. The Leader will be riding one of his Pokémon, and the other three will be ridden by his Gym Trainers.[break][break] One exception to the above rule is if the challenger brings a Pokémon that evolves from Eevee to the Non-Traditional Challenge, they will get a very special version of the Overland Racing Challenge, at a unique course.[break][break] Trainers may Mega Evolve or Terastallize their Pokémon at any point during the race, and the transformation will last for three Obstacles. Z-Moves that can be flavored as extreme bursts of speed may be used once during the Non-Traditional Challenge. All of these will have a big impact on the Challenge outcome. The Gym Leader will not use Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, or Terastallization unless agreed to beforehand.[break][break] Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and Terastallization will be permitted ONCE EACH during the race as long as their durations do not overlap; however, please bear in mind that depending on your Pokémon's build, you may not be able to use them all in the same race.[break][break] The DYNAMAX PHENOMENON is disallowed for Non-Traditional Challenges.[break][break]
DICE ROLLS All Non-Traditional Challenges will have dice rolls! These dice rolls will be used to determine how well a trainer and their Pokémon can react to the course's twists, turns, and obstacles! Generally speaking, the course's difficulty will scale according to the number of Badges the challenger already possesses. The more Badges your character possesses, the more complex and demanding the course is expected to be![break][break]
Non-Traditional Challenges will typically consist of three laps around the course, each lap spanning three posts, meaning nine posting rounds total.[break][break]
Moves that could be reasonably used to make a Pokémon travel faster, such as QUICK ATTACK, AGILITY, and EXTREME SPEED, are prohibited from use during the first lap of the race only.[break][break]
During the second and third laps, however, they can be used to full effect. Racers and Pokémon are not to be directly attacked, but otherwise go crazy and be creative! You will be rewarded for creativity![break][break]
For all Non-Traditional Challenges, it is highly recommended, but not required, that your Pokémon has at least one such move. Generally speaking, most priority moves, moves that raise Speed stages, or moves that raise Evasion stages will qualify. If you have a question, ask away!

SIGN-UPS APPLICATIONS TO APPLY FOR A CHALLENGE, simply sign up using the below form. Your movesets are not locked in until the first post of your Gym Thread. Once your challenge has been accepted, you will have 7 days to post your Gym thread. After 7 days, if your Gym thread has not been posted, you will lose your spot. [break][break]
NEW 10/7/23: Only one character per player may be in the gym queue at a time. If you wish to challenge Mauville Gym with a second one of your characters, you must wait until your first character's challenge is complete before signing up another of your characters.[break][break]
Challengers will be waitlisted if they apply while the queue is open but there are insufficient slots for all pending applications since the last time the Gym queue was updated. This means that if you apply while the queue is open, even if all the open slots are taken by others who registered before you, your challenge will be waitlisted. The queue will be monitored closely while it is open. I reserve the right to close the queue if there are too many waitlisted challengers.[break][break]
Additionally, slots labeled (TRAD ONLY) are dedicated Traditional Battle slots. This means that if all normal slots are taken by Race Challenges, you can register for a Traditional Battle only. When that Traditional Battle finishes, if other Traditional Battle(s) are in progress in the normal slots, the battle with the most progress will be moved to the Dedicated Traditional Battle slots.[break][break]

Josh will be taking on up to three challengers at a time for Non-Traditional Challenges and up to seven challengers at a time in total. Any requests for a Gym Challenge while the queue is closed will be ignored.[break][break]
