This would be his first time facing a gym. Though he wouldn’t be battling said gym leader, not in a Pokémon battle anyway. Nope they would be competing in a race. Since hearing about the gyms racing challenge he had been curious about racing Pokémon. Sure he would ride his Zoroark and even go fast on him. But competing? He had never thought of doing something like that.
[break][break]
Mirage stood next to him as he waited to be called. Once they called him he would go over to where the race was taking place. He had heard Josh was fast but hopefully Mirage would be able to stand up to him. The strangely colored Zoroark seemed ready to go or so he assumed.
[break][break]
Mirage wasn’t real open with his emotions. Only really showing emotions when he wanted to or if he thought Axel was being threatened. He would like to think Mirage was raring to go though.
[break][break]
Because he knew he was ready. Ready to prove that him and Mirage has what it takes. He was going to give this challenge everything he had.[break]

MAUVILLE GYM | Drift Highway | Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆☆
COURSE RECORD: 02'13"888
RECORD HOLDER:

[player]https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-gamecube-gcn/f-zero-gx/220%20-%20Long%20Pre-View%20%28Course%20View%202%29.mp3[/player]

Mauville Racing Grounds' facility was enormous indeed; while the office space had little signage due to its size being on the smaller side, the property where the action took place, just outside the city proper, was enormous. Luckily, Josh had experienced staff who knew the facility well, and signage that could guide challengers to the correct location. The voice of ANDREW WEISS, Josh's scheduler, echoed over the Gym's loudspeakers:

"Challenger Steel, please report to Sector 5. Challenger Steel, to Sector 5. Thank you!"

Provided the challenger found ample signage, he would see the brash and tall ACE SHEEKE, already seated on Craggro the Hisuian Arcanine; the timid and short ERON IUNIS, on Blitz the Shiny Luxray, and the reserved ARAVAN ESCHER, astride Kairi the Vaporeon. Lastly, he would see the Gym Leader , making adjustments to the saddle strapped to Braver, a Kantonian Arcanine that towered over them both. "Absalom? Right on time, I see," Josh greeted his challenger. "Been meaning to get the big guy out of his Poké Ball for a while, and this is the perfect course for it. Wide, drifty turns and some long stretches to let loose," he explained. The three Gym Trainers introduced themselves and Josh's Pokémon they were borrowing, one by one. "And don't forget, Aravan, no swimming. That's illegal."

There was a light breeze out of the east, though it wouldn't affect Pokémon too much. A small crowd filled the bottom several rows of mostly empty stands on both sides of Sector 5's DRIFT HIGHWAY course. The course was aptly named: while almost all of its turns were U-turns, they were wide enough that a Pokémon could skid around them with strong enough paws or claws alongside the ability to sufficiently shift its body weight.

Josh went over the rules of the challenge, required by Hoenn League statute. "See that arch near the starting line, with the long and skinny monitor on it? We line up behind that, and the countdown will be on that display. It will sound four horns and display '3, 2, 1, GO'. On 'GO', the race starts. Moves like Quick Attack can't be used on the first lap. After the first lap, use them as much as you think your Zoroark can handle. Beat me to the finish line after three laps, or otherwise prove to me you can handle the pressure of split second decision making, and the Hoenn League Quick Badge is yours."

Once the explanation was over, Braver crouched to let Josh aboard. After he had climbed onto the big, striped dog's back, the Gym Leader wrapped his legs and waist into the cocoon and zipped them up. While it restricted his motion some, the exotic saddle ensured the young man wasn't taking a high speed fall. "You better be ready to fly down the course, because Braver here is one of my fastest Pokémon," Josh warned as he slammed his helmet's visor down. If Absalom were to glance toward him, he would see a laser focused expression, almost like he was in a zen state as he held Braver's reins in anticipation of the green light.

INSTRUCTIONS

You will have 8 ranks to distribute among three skills. No more than 5 ranks can be assigned to any one skill.
  • SPEED: This represents how fast your Pokémon can travel. Each rank of Speed adds 10 to all your rolls, and an additional 10 to rolls on Speed-based Obstacles.
  • ENDURANCE: This represents how well a Pokémon can navigate difficult terrain, and affects how often a Pokémon can use its Boost during a race. Your Pokémon can use its Boost a number of times equal to its number of ranks in Endurance (min. 1). Each rank of Endurance reduces the Target Number of Endurance-based Obstacles by 20.
  • REACTION: This represents a Pokémon’s cornering ability. Each rank of Reaction reduces the Target Number of Reaction-based Obstacles by 20.

In the OOC notes of your next post, please note your Pokémon's distribution of skills.

You do not need to roll after your next post, but you will need to [ roll ] twice at the end of every post mid-challenge. This roll will be modified according to your Pokémon's skill ranks.

Example: If a player rolls a 60 on a post involving running down a straightaway as fast as possible atop a Pokémon with four ranks in Speed, their effective roll will be 140.

The Leader's next post will include a "mod post" that depicts the course's first Obstacle: a prompt that presents a challenge for the racers to overcome. Each Obstacle will include the following information:

Target Number: This is the number the racers need to roll at or above to overcome the Obstacle without penalty. While it is uncommon, an Obstacle can have multiple Target Numbers.

Intended Skill: This is the Skill that will apply to the Obstacle. It can be Speed, Endurance, or Reaction.

Example Obstacle: The track starts out with a bang--a sharp, 135-degree left turn mere tens of meters from the starting line. The width of the turn itself makes recovering from a misjudged angle easier, but the track quickly narrows up again afterward. A guardrail on the outside keeps Pokémon from sliding off the course, but there is no such guardrail on the inside, and there’s a shallow stream that looks time-consuming for non-Water Pokémon to climb out of!

Target Number: 105 (Reaction)
After the players make their rolls, the Target Number is deducted from the player's roll, and the difference becomes the player's Track Points (TP) for the round. 100 TP corresponds to roughly one second of time differential. The race will consist of three laps, with three Obstacles per lap. After the ninth Obstacle, total Track Points will determine finishing order. The QUICK BADGE is awarded if at least one of the following conditions are met:

1) The challenger finishes the race in 1st or 2nd place.
2) The challenger finishes the race ahead of the Gym Leader.
3) The challenger otherwise demonstrates their mastery of the tenets of Mauville Gym, at the Leader's discretion.

Hearing his name he was quick to get up. There were helpful signs showing him the way so reaching the track wasn’t hard. Upon arrival he took notice of the other riders assessing them before redirecting his attention to the gym leader when he was spoken to.
[break][break]
”Punctuality is key to making good first impressions,” he told the older male. Or at least that’s what he had read in a book. The older male didn’t have to know about that. Nor did the other gym trainers who he would also be racing against.
[break][break]
So the gym leader would be riding an Arcanine. It looked just like a normal everyday Arcanine. However it seemed one of the other riders would be on a different variation of Arcanine. It was unfamiliar to him though, so he wondered if it was similar to his Zoroark.
[break][break]
”Seems like a good course,” he said a bit awkwardly. He wasn’t the greatest at socializing. And it wasn’t to hard to tell from the way he interacted. Being isolated for ten years of a life would do that to a person.
[break][break]
The mention of swimming made him frown in thought. He would have to be sure to steer clear from any water. At least the best he could. He wasn’t real worried about the water slowing them down but more to the fact that he couldn’t swim. Though he knew Mirage would never allow anything to happen to him.
[break][break]
His thoughts were dragged away from not drowning when spoke again bringing his attention to the course. He took notice of what the older male was talking about and nodded. The male continued speaking and he took the time to take note of what the course looked like.
[break][break]
Okay so he didn’t necessarily have to win. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t give it his best and really try. ”Got it,” he said to show he had taken in everything that he had been told. Seemed simple enough.
[break][break]
With the explanation over he got on his Zoroark knowing the saddle was correct. Having checked everything before coming. Removing his glasses he put them away before putting on his goggles from where they had been hanging around his neck. He had just finished putting on his goggles when the older male spoke. ”You better believe I am, me and Mirage aren’t known for just rolling over and giving up.”
[break][break]
Turning his focus to the light own eyes narrowed in determination as he waited. Waited for the light to turn green so they could go.

🎼 THEME SONG - Infinite Blue - F-ZERO GX OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK

Absalom's focus seemed to be just as intense as Josh's. He could tell just from the challenger's face that he was indeed serious about his challenge. Many of his challengers just enjoyed the experience and novelty of a high speed competition instead of a traditional battle challenge. He felt he had to step up his own game, too. "Good luck to you, and may the best racer win," he warmly said to Absalom after everyone had lined up.

Once the five were lined up, three images of the legendary Pokémon Raikou at full gallop appeared on the banner monitor above the starting arch. Behind them was a "GET READY" prompt, Josh and his Gym Trainers tensing their legs in anticipation. The first of the three images began to fade away, with it sounding a loud squawk as a simultaneous aural warning that the race was about to begin. A second, then a third followed. When the final image of Raikou disappeared, the prompt changed to a green "GO" alongside a longer and higher-pitched squawk. Squeezing Braver's sides, a deep bark left the Arcanine's mouth, and he and his trainers were off. Blitz and Eron quick to accelerate. The two Arcanine lagged behind at first, but their extremely high top speeds could easily cause them to make up ground as the race went on, provided their paws could handle the repeated sliding around corners!

INSTRUCTIONS

After each posting round, a prompt describing the upcoming section of the track will be posted. These prompts may highlight different sections of the course on each lap. You will react to the prompt, then [ roll ] twice. For the first lap, the Leader's rolls will be capped at 130 before modifiers.

LAP 1 | OBSTACLE 1

Prompt: After a long and straight opening stretch, the course's titular feature loomed ahead: a series of three U-turns that started out gentle and wide, but became progressively tighter and more narrow. The first two, especially while the Pokémon were still getting up to speed, would likely pose little trouble, but the third would require braking or sliding! The former would likely ensure successful navigation at the cost of speed on the backstretch. The latter would be faster but more difficult, risking a collision with the inner wall if the slide started too early, or falling into the aquatic version of the course if they slid off the outside of the track!

Target Number: 125 (Reaction)

Special: Any TP lost as a result of a total roll that is more than 25 beneath the Target Number is doubled from the Pokémon needing to climb out of the water.

”Same to you,” the teen said figuring it was polite to wish him luck as well. Even if he probably wouldn’t need it. One wasn’t just given the moniker master of faster for no reason after all. But still he had been raised with manners and being polite was one of those things.
[break][break]
Once the others were lined up beside him and gym leader he returned his attention to the screen. He watched with rapt attention as an image of Raikou, a Pokémon he only knew from storybooks, appeared. He was preparing himself to get Mirage running as he waited for the time to start the race.
[break][break]
He watched as the last Raikou disappeared before a green go appeared signaling it was time to start. He squeezed his legs against Mirage’s side causing him to shoot forward. The zoroark used his claws to help propel them forwards. He wasn’t as strong as some of the bigger Pokémon being on the more slender side, but he could use his claws to give them more of a boost. Zoroark after all was built more for speed than brute force.
[break][break]
The first two turns didn’t seem to bad but the third looked like it would be tricky. He knew there were one of two ways he could pull off the third turn. Slow down or take the turn at a skid. There were problems when it came to both, but the former would be safer. The latter could end up with him wiping out some way.
[break][break]
Decision made he chose to address the H.Zoroark. "When we get to the third turn take it at a skid but turn your body with the skid. Hopefully that’ll keep us from wiping out in some way,” he told Mirage before bracing himself when the turn in question came in view. Hopefully they would be able to complete this maneuver.[break]

While Arcanine were among the fastest common land Pokémon in the world, they were also among the most strenuous on a rider's body. The striped fire-type's sheer size and strength made controlling the majesting creature difficult. Even holding on was difficult; without a cocoon, the Arcanine's flexing back would bounce a rider high. With a cocoon, a rider would not be at risk of falling, but would also be subject to the full force of the fire-type's powerful strides. Josh opted for the latter, and he felt sore after every high speed run on Braver. Perhaps it would be time to learn how to ride the Arcanine without a cocoon?

The Gym Leader, trailing early, guided the hulking dog to the course's outside line, close to the water, before sliding his left hand down the reins and yanking to the right with both arms. With almost cruel strength, he abruptly turned the Arcanine's head as far to the right as he could. Feeling his mount's bulk shift to the right, the Pokémon's nails rubbing against the ground created a few sparks. Dirt went flying into the outside wall protecting teams from going into the drink at the end of the curve. While these long turns were not Braver's greatest strength, the second half of the course had plenty of sections for him to floor ir, particularly once Extreme Speed was allowed.

GmGo82Z_

Arcanine were some of the fastest Pokémon on land. The best-trained ones were able to keep up with even some legendary Pokémon well-known for their speed. All that speed came with a cost, though; they were slow to get started. 's ZOROARK was the fastest off the line, sprinting ahead of the field to find open space for navigating the three U-turns ahead. ARAVAN ESCHER's VAPOREON was also quick off the line, challenging the ghost-type for early position. ERON IUNIS and his SHINY LUXRAY took a more calculated approach; rather than adjusting his turning intensity, the white-haired trainer varied the yellow-and-black cat's speed in an effort to conserve stamina for the long straightaways to come.

and ACE SHEEKE dueled for early position, their pair of ARCANINE running alongside one another with similar approaches to the first set of curves. While they were both able to slide around the first two curves without issue, the third proved troublesome for the HISUIAN ARCANINE. Underestimating the width of the track, the redhead ran out of real estate quickly. His mount was quick to continue shifting his weight right, his rear leg slamming into the outside wall and saving that of his rider from an impact that would have been painful even with the safety equipment the racers wore. The VAPOREON's superior turning led ARAVAN ESCHER to an early lead out of the curves, but the field was close behind!

LAP 1 | OBSTACLE 2

Prompt: After three long and grueling turns that wore the competitors' paws down, a long, downhill straightaway loomed ahead. The racers had plenty of opportunity to get their Pokémon up to top speed, and they would need it; the track abruptly ended, necessitating their partners to make a daring leap to another section of track straight ahead! A leap that was not long enough would be punished with a much windier, uphill alternative that would be slow to run around!

Target Number: 135 (Speed)

Special: None

To his relief they pulled off the turns with no problem. From what he could see they were third. But they were going to just let it stay that way. With the turns out of the way the path had become more open which meant they could also speed up with no worry. It looked like they would have to speed up anyway considering there was a huge jump coming up.
[break][break]
Pressing harder on Mirage’s sides the caused the ghostly zoroark to pick up more speed. Instead of worrying about the racers behind them he decided to focus on the racers ahead of him. Unsurprisingly one of them was the gym leader himself and the other was the one that had been introduced as Aravan.
[break][break]
Considering the Vaporeon he rode it would be surprising if he kept that lead. He figured he had done with with the turns but with the more open area he would probably start to fall behind. He had been assessing the other racers to see where their strong points lay.
[break][break]
And the vaporeon’s strong point didn’t seem to be its speed. That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to keep an eye on it though. He wasn’t the type to underestimate an opponent. So he would be keeping an eye on all the other racers whenever he could. While they ran he made sure to keep the pressure up knowing they would have to be going pretty fast to make that jump.

After navigating the last sharp curve, a charred trail following Braver's skidding paws, the Gym Leader took a quick glance behind him. Absalom was right on his heels, Mirage swerving around him in an effort to make a critical pass. Having never seen the phantom fox's kind before, only being familiar with the Unovan variety of Zoroark, it would have been mesmerizing to watch the Pokémon run. Josh knew how fast the Unovan subspecies was, and wanted one himself for that reason. This kind appeared to be even faster. Ghost-type ride Pokémon were a rarity, but the ones that were out there were capable of amazing feats.

There was no time to admire the challenger's Pokémon, though; with the raw speed most of the field possessed, traffic jams would be an inevitability, and it would take the Leader's full focus to weave around them. While Arcanine did not have good turning, their bulk made them able to run for long distances, and let them stand their ground. He would take advantage of that by shooting across the straightaway as though Abaslom and his Zoroark were not there, kicking Braver's sides and bracing himself. He buried his head in the Arcanine's thick fur, shielding himself against the wake of the wind during the high speed sprint Arcanine were known for.

|q2ViyKv

Black skid marks charred the course beneath the paws of the sliding ARCANINE and HISUIAN ARCANINE as they came out of the last of the three big turns and toward the first spot on the course where Pokémon could let loose with all their speed. The contrast in skills between ARAVAN ESCHER's VAPOREON and the rest of the field was on full display as the five Pokémon put on as much speed as they could, each throwing their riders back in the saddle and putting the leatherers' work to the test.

The big dogs, perhaps overspecialized in pure speed, had little trouble clearing the gap, ACE SHEEKE letting out a whoop as his HISUIAN ARCANINE rocketed past ERON IUNIS' LUXRAY, whose leap was almost too shallow. The electric-type stumbled on the front edge of the upper path, but ultimately made it and continued to chase down his coworker.

The difficulty in the jump came neither from a lack of ground to get up to speed nor from its length; it came from the altitude difference from the upper track to the landing zone being very small. Landing on the upper, faster section of the course would require a low, fast leap that the amphibious water-type simply did not have the speed for. Though the blue Pokémon could not make the upper part of the track, she landed so high up the hill that the remainder of the ascent slowed her very little. When the paths merged, they were behind and his ARCANINE.

and his HISUIAN ZOROARK ran into the opposite problem; in an effort to build as much speed as possible, the ghost-type ran off the course entirely, falling onto the lower path and having to run up the steepest part of the hill. The LUXRAY in front of him was within striking distance by the time the paths merged, though the Gym Leader's fire-type was quite far ahead of him now.

LAP 1 | OBSTACLE 3

Prompt: Most of the Drift Highway's turns were long but gentle, making them easy to slide around. This was the one exception: a brutal, narrow S-curve typically only seen on substantially harder tracks. To take this curve without slowing down, Pokémon would need to trust their trainers' strength enough to hold on through a full left turn, followed by a full right turn half a second later... if the Pokémon itself was capable of shifting its weight that rapidly without falling over in the first place! The vast majority of Pokémon would have their braking skills tested by this one.

When they didn’t complete the leap making it so they would have to climb the steepest part the wheels in his head were already turning. There was one thing they could do to try and cut the climb in half. It was something he had come up with in case they needed to find their way up a cliff or some kind of rock face.
[break][break]
Of course the technic was one he had thought of in case of an injury in that kind of situation but he couldn’t think of any thing better. ”Maneuver number five,” he said once they had landed. Hearing the command Mirage immediately dug his front claws into the ground to gather more strength in his front legs before propelling himself up the hill.
[break][break]
To keep himself from falling back down he would immediately dig his claws into the ground before propelling himself up again. The technique had taken a lot of work to get down since it required the Pokémon to be quick to keep themself from falling back down. Once they reached the top of the hill he would coax Mirage to pick up speed once more to make up for time they had lost.
[break][break]
As they moved forwards he would take notes of the turns ahead of them and would calculate what needed to be done to complete the turns. Though sometimes he knew math could let one down if they miscalculated. Hopefully he was right with his calculations and would be able to get through this part of the lap without any hiccups.[break]

Racing this course briefly brought back nostalgia of his first race at Hoenn with , though this was on a land version of the same course. In some ways, it was easier, his Pokémon more responsive due to increased friction from the ground rather than the waves. In others, it was harder; using his Pokémon's momentum to bounce across the corners at high speed was not an option due to that very same increase in friction.

Through the last right angle curve, Josh and Braver were coming in hot to the course's most difficult corner. It was the one thing Arcanine were not good at on this course. The strong man yanked back hard on the fire-type's reins, his mount skidding on all four paws in an effort to slow down enough to pass the whiplash-inducing chicane unharmed. He wondered if it would be in time; while Arcanine had a lot of raw speed, their bulk meant they carried immense momentum, and their muscles could only remove that momentum so quickly.

|acqWM0j

The backstretch's chicane proved to be a daunting challenge even for Pokémon most adept in making quick turns. 's Maneuver Number Five just barely kept his ghostly HISUIAN ZOROARK off the walls, the challenger perhaps able to feel his clothing harmlessly brush against one of them. Similarly, ARAVAN ESCHER and his VAPOREON grazed the outside wall, letting 's braking technique shine as his ARCANINE widened the gap between the top two spots. While his lead was not insurmountable, it was substantial as the Leader crossed the line.

The VAPOREON battled ACE SHEEKE's HISUIAN ARCANINE and ERON IUNIS' LUXRAY side-by-side as the home stretch dropped off, the three Pokémon leaping toward the starting arch for the completion of their first lap. was quite a few lengths behind, but the lead was far from unassailable. Anything could happen! The Gym Trainers knew from experience that the first lap was just the warm-up, the display on top of the arch flashing with the text "YOU GOT BOOST POWER!"

Now, the true race began.

INSTRUCTIONS

You Got Boost Power! Speed-increasing moves, such as QUICK ATTACK, AGILITY, and EXTREME SPEED are now allowed. Pokémon will be able to use such speed-increasing moves a number of times up to their Endurance ranks for the rest of the race. Speed-increasing moves will grant you ADVANTAGE for the posting round, meaning you will [ roll ] four times instead of two for that post and ignore the lower set of rolls. Please separate the first two rolls from the second two rolls with a delimiter of some kind. For the second lap of the race, the Leader's rolls will be capped at 150, before modifiers are applied.

Beware! Taking tight turns and stamina-draining Obstacles at high speeds can result in dire consequences, and may impose DISADVANTAGE, meaning the lower of the two rolls will be taken. If the lower of the two rolls would still pass the Obstacle, Track Position for that Obstacle will be calculated based on the higher of the two rolls.

LAP 2 | OBSTACLE 1

Prompt: The course's three opening U-turns loomed ahead a second time, though racers would find the timing for navigating them would feel much different, what with their Pokémon already going at full speed. This would be doubly true for Pokémon who fully embraced the course's name, choosing to slide around the long turns rather than twist their bodies via traditional means. There would be little time between curves to adjust, and paws might start to feel the burn!

Target Number: 130 (Reaction)

Special: Using BOOST POWER on this Obstacle will change the Intended Skill to Endurance from Reaction. Any TP lost as a result of a total roll that is more than 25 beneath the Target Number is doubled from the Pokémon needing to climb out of the water.

His maneuver number five seemed to pay off somewhat but they were still behind. They would need to try and make up for the distance. But they couldn’t get careless. The idiom work smarter, not harder ran through his mind as they started to come back up to the first lap again. He knew from the first time the last turn was pretty sharp due to them having built up a good amount of speed by the third u-turn.
[break][break]
He was sure that all three turns would be pretty sharp now that they’d been able to built up speed. Which meant getting around them wound be trickier. Since he could now use speed boosters he could have Mirage use agility but they felt that there was a higher chance of them loosing control if they built up to much speed.
[break][break]
Boosting his speed might be better left for the second lap. When he could use it to make that jump. Even if that meant he wouldn’t make any headway of catching up with the others. But the urge just to let loose and catch up as soon possible was there. However he knew one wrong move would mean him falling even further behind. Something that he wanted to prevent if he could.
[break][break]
This time caution would trump risk and he would decide to hold off on boosting his speed for now. Better to not go fast on the turns that he would end up loosing control. Which would only hamper him even more.
[break][break]
Like he had done the first time around he would would take the turns at a side while having Mirage turn his body with the side. This time around though he would try harder to keep Mirage steady and have him veer to much in one direction. [break][break] asGwdAMp

While the turns were sharp, the Drift Highway also featured wide lanes sloped toward the inside of the track, making even Pokémon lacking great turning skills could run or slide around its snake-like opening stretch. Arcanine were notorious for being difficult to turn, hence why Josh had been forced to slow down so much on the backstretch. It would be a way for the rest of the field to easily get back in the race.

Rather than focus on the spots where Braver was less skilled and lose time, the smart and daring Gym Leader would sink his proverbial lead feet onto the gas pedal that was the Arcanine's sides. "EXTREME SPEED, Braver!" Josh yelled, flicking and yanking on the fire-type's reins at full power and even shifting his full body weight into the turn. Smoke flew from the space the Arcanine's blurred legs passed through, leaving a black trail on the track. He showed no signs of slowing down when the turn reversed direction, mount and rider working together to shift their momentum with it.

Using EXTREME SPEED!

92bJ_XMa||

There were two approaches to the back-and-forth curves, and which one was correct depended entirely on the team's capabilities. Rider stamina was just as big of a factor as a Pokémon's racing specs, ACE SHEEKE and his HISUIAN ARCANINE showing no respect for the water hazard looming on the outside of the track. His recklessness let him surge past ARAVAN ESCHER and his VAPOREON, their mistimed QUICK ATTACK sending them into the water. While they were able to recover quickly, they gave back a lot of position to the dangerous but well-executed burst of EXTREME SPEED. It was only 's own strength and understanding of his mount's capabilities that kept him in first place, the fire-type dogs starting to break away from the rest of the field.

's approach was perfect for the course - the ghostly fox was already fast enough that any sort of boost move would require almost inhumanly precise timing for the duo to get away unscathed. As the challenger rounded the last U-turn and sailed over the backstretch's jump, he found himself flanked by ERON IUNIS, ARAVAN ESCHER, and their SHINY LUXRAY and VAPOREON. It was neck and neck as the competitors went into the second half of the long straightaway three-wide!

LAP 2 | OBSTACLE 2

Prompt: After the leap on the backstretch were two fairly long straightaways, the second narrowing over time. They were separated by a gentle right turn that would be trivial for most Pokémon to make even at full speed. While it was a great place to let loose with a burst of speed, Pokémon would have to slam on the brakes when the course narrowed - that deadly chicane was coming!

As they continued to run and made the leap succeeding this time he looked at the path ahead. While the gentle turn would be a good place to let loose the more narrow path had him worried. Going at full speed would risk them having to slam on the brakes when they not to the more narrow part of the course. Doing so would run the risk of Mirage snagging a claw.
[break][break]
He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if Mirage ended up getting hurt because he let the competition of the race get to him. No gym badge was worth his Pokémon getting hurt due to carelessness made by one of his decisions. If it was an accident that was something entirely different.
[break][break]
Besides he should be careful about how many times he used Mirage’s agility. While he could handle agility using it to much would start to wear on his body. It wasn’t something he could use excessively. So he should only use it when he was sure it wouldn’t cause them to wipe out. Because his sister would definitely lecture him if he got hard receiving a gym badge or if he used agility to the point that he triggered his condition.
[break][break]
The only temptation to use a speed boost was to try and put some distance between him and the other racers. To try and get out of being neck and neck with the other racers. But there was the possibility that he would end up falling behind instead if he lost control and of course he wouldn’t risk Mirage getting hurt.

Josh knew Braver was more than capable of flying around the upcoming turn at high speed. As seemingly bottomless as the Arcanine's stamina was, stamina was not the concern. His own stamina was the limiting factor. The species was among the fastest of all common Pokémon on land, but their limited turning capabilities meant racing the Pokémon effectively required both great anticipation and great strength to turn the giant dog's head in the correct direction. The species was also known for not having the greatest braking capabilities; even their exceptionally strong legs could only do so much to slow down their massive bodies. It was not uncommon for Arcanine to take an entire lap to slow to a stop on shorter courses.

The Gym Leader wondered what kind of pace he was on; the HoloWear in his helmet gave him the current race time, but did not show his pace with the course record. He would be able to see his pace at the end of the lap. "If we're on pace for it, Braver, we're going for the record," he said into the big dog's ear, easing his hold with his legs to induce coasting to slower speeds in preparation for the backstretch's nasty chicane.

Racers that felt especially confident in their Pokémon took the opportunity to make moves. ARAVAN ESCHER jabbed at his VAPOREON's sides, the water-type sounding a squeal before the blur of a QUICK ATTACK made the two difficult to see clearly. ACE SHEEKE and his HISUIAN ARCANINE were even more aggressive, commanding the use of EXTREME SPEED. It was only his immense strength that prevented the reckless move from being a race-ending disaster. He had overcompensated for his partner's lack of agility; by the time the redhead reacted, it was too late. The Gym Trainer hissed as his Arcanine's right side and his own right leg scraped against the inside wall. causing his leg to throb and the two to lose a lot of speed.

The reserved approaches of ERON IUNIS and Gym Leader were rewarded. With powerful, whiplash-inducing swerving, the SHINY LUXRAY weaved through the narrow chicane without losing any speed, catching almost all the way up to the HISUIAN ARCANINE in front of him. The ARCANINE's strategy to coast to a slower speed let the fire-type weave through the nasty S-curve without losing more speed than what was necessary, giving them a great opportunity to extend their lead going into the final lap, possibly even chasing a coveted course record. Even so, and his HISUIAN ZOROARK were far from out of the race; as they rounded the corner leading to the course's final jump, the entire field other than the Gym Leader was still in sight!

LAP 2 | OBSTACLE 3

Prompt: The course remained narrow in the home stretch, making going any more than two wide dicey at best. The long straightaway ahead was the racers' best opportunity yet for their Pokémon to let loose with QUICK ATTACKS and the like. Some Pokémon might need it to cross the starting arch; that jump from the top of the hill was rather long!

Target Number: 120 (Speed)

Axel frowned as he ended up last again. Sure he might be reckless but he wouldn’t do it at risk of hurting his Pokémon. He was unsure how Aravan managed to pull it off. He didn’t believe in luck since he didn’t see any logic behind luck. Ace overcompensated and ran up against the wall. That had been another worry of his. Either hurting his partners claws with the braking or hurting both him and Mirage by slamming up against the wall. The latter would get him a scolding from his sister something he definitely didn’t want.

As the came upon the next part of the lap he saw that it would be the perfect chance to let off some speed. They had to time it just right though. When he felt that it was the time he gave the order. ”Mirage use agility,” he told his partner bracing himself. Hopefully it would work in their favor.

Hearing his trainers order he activated his move agility.
