Aaron wasn't happy about the unexpected dinner guest. But it was what it was. He had stayed quiet for the most part. Until Keenan had tortured him with asking how he thought the battle went. The smaller blonde was brutal, delivering first with the Pokemon choices and the decision of trying to control the speed of battle. With Miltank at first, then Walrein. Only being somewhat successful with the blubbery boy. Offensively, the brute force tactics was about the only reason he won. As well as a technicallity. After staring straight into Josh's eyes, the perhaps overconfident teenager bet that he could win losing only one Pokemon in a three v three. Then submitted his own challenge. Monotone and stoic, he was led into the arena a couple days after.

Just like last time, the stands were full. His name caught attention since his older brother had just challenged Josh, and the announcer even mentioned that he was the younger brother. Kee was even in the stands in a cheerleader's outfit, complete with pom-poms and skirt thing, cheering him on. Sighing heavily, he went up to the challenger's stands. "Let's have a fruitful battle." Bowing politely and respectfully, and awaited Josh's first choice. He already had a battle plan, but wanted to wait and see if he would have to change it right away.

Josh noticed another sellout crowd for a Toral family member's Gym challenge. This family must have had quite the influence in Hoenn; normally there were a fair amount of empty seats, especially higher up the stairs. Not today, though; he would have to work hard to show challengers that Mauville's Gym had the reputation it did for a reason.

"Hope you're having a good day, Aaron," Josh greeted the challenger from the back of his Manectric, Saber, who would not be participating in the battle. The three that were, a Jolteon, Flygon, and shiny Pyroar, were already near or inside the Leader's trainer's box. The quadrupeds each stood on one side of the box, while the dragon-type hovered, his wings producing a gentle, pleasant hum. "Since we've already gone over the rules, let's get this battle started!"

Anticipating the side judge to wave his green flag, Josh pointed toward his Flygon, who was quick to zip toward the battle court's center. Flygon weren't known for being extremely fast, but this one sure was! Verte started flitting around the center of the battle court with the agility of an insect, though not once did he go offsides. They awaited the signal to begin.

"I'm fine." Aaron wasn't much of a talker already, but he can understand why someone would ask that...he was always monotone and usually just looked grumpy. Or not very tolerant of people's bullshit. The Flygon was expected, they were unusually tough to counter. Pyroar and Jolteon...much as he would have liked to set up Toxic Spikes, speed and efficientcy would be better. Besides, Frosslass wasn't a slouch when it came to speed anyways. The plan modified, Aaron took out a pokeball. He was well aware that his team all shared a common weakness, and all three of Josh's Pokemon could have moves that exploited that. Awareness of that and knowing how to counter that would be key in his mind. Tossing the pokeball wordlessly, he released Froslass, his icy ghost.

With the green light to begin, the set up started. "Use Hail." Ace heard Kee scream out "Hail Yeah!" making several people around the older Toral facepalm. Aaron was used to his brother's doting nature and antics, so this didn't even warrant him to look at the elder blonde. This Hail seemed different to Keenan's Walrein's though...seemed thicker, foggier. And Froslass's ability kicked in with Snow Cloak. With a simple peace sign from her hands, she camouflaged into the Hail...and even with the pelting stones, Flygon wasn't going to last very long...

What a nightmare matchup.

This was not the foot Josh wanted to start his challenge with Aaron on. While Flygon's CRUNCHing dragon fangs could rend the Froslass' soul from her body, the Gym Leader immediately dismissed the possibility. One ice attack, even something as simple as an ICE SHARD, and Verte was taking a dirt nap on the battle court. The Froslass could even focus on simply evading attacks while the hailstones did the work for her. While the chitin of a Flygon's wings was incredibly thick and strong, the secret to the dragon's unique method of flight, if the hailstones got thick enough, they could still rend holes in his wings. With how fast those wings vibrate, the resulting stress would leave Verte in agony.

Furthermore, Verte's primary method of handling hidden foes, his BOOMBURST, would be ineffective on the Froslass. Instead, he had to command the next best thing. "Verte, use BUG BUZZ!" The Flygon's wings disappeared and began to shriek, hoping to catch the Froslass pinched between the intense shockwaves traveling in different directions.

And the game was afoot. Already Josh looked like he was having trouble making a decision. No, weighing his options, as a gym leader should. A blistering Bug Buzz surged through the Hail. A hiss sounded as the Froslass was clipped...not a solid hit. Not that a solid one would have mattered much, since the icy ghost was resistant to bug type attacks. But damage was damage. Time to end round one! "Blizzard. Finish this round." The Hail started to get whipped up even more, encompassing the entire field. The rails forward of the trainer's area started getting frosty, as did the are just outside the outlined field. With any luck, this will be a one-hit KO.

The difference between Blizzards between the two brothers should be evident. Aaron was the stronger trainer. Hopefully Josh would notice this. Though the problem for Aaron would be the next Pokemon in Josh's lineup. Would he try to get a quick victory with Pyroar, forcing Aaron to switch and exposing his other two to Hail damage, or go with the Jolteon that he had no real answer for. Aside from some setup from Froslass and then hitting it as hard as possible. Aaron hoped for the Pyroar, since at least he could set up with his original plan then.

Ice from the ghost-type's BLIZZARD covered the edges of Verte's wings, "Fight it, Verte!" Josh cried over the severe wind Aaron's Pokémon was generating. The dragon kept buzzing, tilting his wings to attempt blowing the cold away from him. Verte squinted as his wings shrieked from how fast they were going. That shriek reduced in pitch as the intensity of the BLIZZARD increased. It was not the weight of the ice on Verte's wings that caused them to stop; after all, the Flygon could still buzz them even with heavy weight bands on them. It was the dragon's muscles that locked up under the extreme wind and cold. Verte was blown off his feet and into the thick pole supporting the Trainer's Box. Josh had to grab onto the rail to avoid falling.

"Leader Devlin's Flygon is unable to battle. Judges' call: one point, Challenger Toral," the side judge announced as a buzzer indicated the knockout.

"Nice one!" Josh shot Aaron a thumbs-up. "But that's the only easy win you're getting. Aslan, you're up!" Josh waved his Pyroar into the arena, hailstones digging into his fur as he leaped into the arena. "Roast it with your FLAMETHROWER!" The lion's glowing mane visible through the hailstorm, the accumulation melting in his presence. He opened his maw, a burning stream of yellow hurtling toward the challenger's Froslass.

That was expected. Holding out his hand for a high five, his icy ghost reappeared only briefly to return it. The amber eyed teenager didn't respond to the gym leader's complement. As expected, the Pyroar was up. The mane glowed as he started off with a Flamethrower. "Double-Team, then return." Multiple copies of Froslass appeared as the flames speared through the Hail, eventually taking down one copy. Then another, but Froslass got to Aaron, allowing him to return it to her pokeball. It was good that Josh went with Pyroar...with no real answer for Jolteon, he could set up with his next Pokemon. Thankfully, Cofagrigus was rather bulky. Slow, but can take a couple hits from even super effective moves. Besides, he a had trick with this particular partner.

Throwing the pokeball, he released the sentient coffin. The Hail was a bit of a double edged sword, the hail stones hitting him as well, but Josh did kind of threw him off a little. He had hoped not to start things off with Froslass.

Keenan could hear murmurs about Aaron using another ghost-type. It kind of made the elder blonde mad. Like, did they not know that there were type specialists? Aaron was a steel and ghost type one. Which kind of made him wonder if Ace was using a dedicated ghost team for this match.

Gym Leaders were massively skilled trainers. They were so skilled that in order for challengers to have a chance, Leaders were forbidden from swapping Pokémon. This was not the case against the Elite Four, where battles would inevitably consist of a revolving door of Pokémon. Smart challengers, like Aaron, would take full advantage of that. This left Josh in a tight spot, having to handle a Pokémon that was defensively oriented. Combined with Froslass' Hail, he was behind the eight ball. He still had his ace in the hole, though.

"Aslan, NOBLE ROAR!" Josh cried, the albino Pyroar tilting his head skyward and loosing a bellow whose shockwave ripped across the grassy field in an effort to reduce the ghost-type's morale and goad the Froslass back out.

Noble Roar? That just lowered Cofagrigus's attacking power. And that was fine by him. This ghosty wasn't here to attack...they were there to set up. "Toxic Spikes." Even with the hail, the coffin laughed and scattered poison dripped spikes everywhere. That Jolteon was going to have a bad time when it was its turn. This was part of the initial plan...the coffin ghost first, set the field up with toxic spikes and Trick Room, then switch out as needed. That...didn't happen. But plans rarely survive contact with the enemy. He supposed things still worked out. Long as Cofigrigus can hold out long enough to set up, he was fine with it being his only casualty.

Keenan saw the play. While some in the audience questioned using Toxic Spikes this late in the match, the older blonde knew why. Aaron had no answer for Jolteon. So poisoning and just trying to outlast was all he had. Or perhaps stacking the poison with Hail and using Froslass's Snow Cloak and Double Team to just wait it out. Even Cofigrigus's special defense wasn't something to laugh at. Ace had planned for the entire match. Though likely hoping to poison the Pyroar too, but that didn't happen. Oh well. Kee just sat back, and waited with a knowing smile.

Aslan reared and lurched backward as the ghostly hands of the Cofagrigus hurled TOXIC SPIKES across Josh's half of the battle court, impeding the lion's mobility. It was then Josh realized the purpose of the Cofagrigus was to slow Josh's team down. The denser the field of venomous spikes got, the more his team would have to be cautious.

He had to get aggressive now.

"Aslan, CRUNCH!" the Gym Leader commanded, the lion leaping for the ghost-type's body, Given the tiniest of openings to do so, Aslan would attempt to slam the foe's lid open and chomp down on the soul gem he expected to be underneath said lid. Even if the Pyroar couldn't shatter the soul gem with his jaws, Josh hoped the fire-type could at least put some big cracks in it. Even so, the open lid would make way for a nice fire pit further in the battle, wouldn't it?

Now he was going on the offensive. Probably a good thing for Josh, but a little too late at this point. Cofigrigus is one beefy boy, and physical attacks, even super effective ones, did far less than what one would expect. Slipping all four arms inside, and clamping shut, the lion clamped down with dark jaws, and tossed him upwards. "Toxic Spikes again." The coffin's arms slipped out and threw more poisonous barbs at Josh's side of the field. That Jolteon was going to have a very bad day upon entry, with so much there as to badly poison it.

Cofagrigus landed hard on the field, but was upright and ready for more. There was one last thing Aaron wanted to do before switching. Just to garuntee that Jellicent would get the first attack in, and hopefully with an one hit KO. But let's see what Josh was going to do next. Being offensive was good and all, but this ghost was a wall.

The field of TOXIC SPIKES surrounding Josh's trainer's box grew more dense. When Blinky leaped into action, landing on them was now unavoidable. Aaron was taking of Josh's difficulty with handling defensive threats. This battle would have been a completely different story if Josh had been able to switch Pokémon freely. Under challenge rules, though, he could not. The young man had taken advantage of that by laying an elaborate speed trap. While Blinky would be able to build up a lot of speed, it would come at great expense. Aaron could play the battle purely defensively and simply outlast Josh. It was one of the things the Gym tried to teach.

Josh still wasn't going to give it anything less than his all, though. That was what being a Gym Leader was about: battling under restrictions and finding creative ways around them for challengers to overcome. "FLAMETHROWER, Aslan! Light that box on fire!" If he couldn't shatter the coffin's soul gem physically, then perhaps he could melt it into crystalline goop. With fangs wide open, the lion did not clamp down; instead, the shiny Pyroar attempted to raze the now-open coffin from the inside out.

The Flamethrower did more damage than the crunch did to Cofagrigus, but still didn't knock him out. The flames pushed him all the way to the border, but not over. And even with the Hail, he was still up and ready to do one last thing before Aaron switched. "Trick Room." With duel claps from his four hands, and slamming them into the ground, a semi-transparent, purple-pinkish tinted box appeared around the field, exactly the border of the field. Trick Room allowed Pokemon that were normally slow to move much faster, and those more nimble and fast opponents to move much slower. To the point that they traded speeds. Set up complete. Time to win this. Taking out a Pokeball, he returned Cofagrigus.

Taking out another, he revealed the last member of his team: Jellicent. The Pringle mascot jellyfish thing smiled as it rubbed two of his tentacles together, licking his lips. Like he was ready to turn the Pyroar into a meal...

Kee giggled. Typical Ace. He could predict the next moves easily enough, and Josh was in deep trouble. Unless his Pyroar and/or Jolteon knew some sweet killer moves, this fight was Aaron's. Still, it was cool to see his brother get to work on a gym leader proper, instead of being a partner or a victim.

It was difficult for Josh to tell whether the Cofagrigus was out of strength after the lion's FLAMETHROWER ravaged the inside of its coffin. He hadn't heard a call from the judge, so he could only assume the Pokémon was still able to battle, merely withdrawn for the Jellicent.

TRICK ROOM?!

This was awful. Far worse than the hailstorm that was dying down.

Josh's best strategy for handling the warped space of TRICK ROOM was to use extremely fast attacks, such as QUICK ATTACK, that were not affected by it. With all of Aaron's Pokémon being Ghost-types, he was really in a bind. "Aslan, CRUNCH! That Jellicent's got a soul gem somewhere - find it and crush it!" the Leader commanded, not one to give up despite being on borrowed time. The big cat bounding toward Jellicent in what appeared to be slow motion was breathtaking to watch, and showcased just how tough Josh had to be to handle the fire-type's flexing back.

If Aaron had a huge ego, he would have laughed at the attempt to continue with a Crunch. Instead, he just issued a single sentence. "Hydro Pump." It was...perhaps a bit overkill. But in his mind, better that than humiliate Josh and his Pyroar with Whirlpool. Glowing blue, the ghost and water type let out one of the most powerful water-type attacks out there. And with a hopeful hit, that was two down. Aaron wanted to show the difference between himself and his older brother...and he hoped he succeeded spectacularly. Keenan still had a lot of catching up to do.

Assuming it was a hit and that it KO'd the lion, he would return the Jellicent. That would leave just the Jolteon. As soon as it entered the field, it would get badly poisoned. Cofagrigus was too hurt to be of any more use during this fight. Froslass it was. Besides, she knew Hail to add on to the misery and the right combination to end this fight. Taking out a Pokeball, he released his icy maiden once more...ready for the final fight.
