If the balls the Cinderace and Scorbunny were kicking around weren't literally on fire, Julia would have gladly joined them for a game of soccer. Alas, the best she could do was cheer her own Pokémon on from the sidelines. Okay, technically, she was supposed to be here on Ranger business to make sure the swarm didn't set anything on fire, but what was the harm in letting her Pokémon have a little fun, too?

[break][break]Momo was serving as a goalie for a Scorbunny practicing its footwork while Pandie faced off against a Cinderace, Detecting any projectiles that came her way so she could punch them out of the air. The fur near her fists was singed, but she didn't seem bothered by it; if anything, that only made her more determined to keep at it. Julia would definitely have to check for damage after this, but for now, she'd let Pandie get her training in. She knew just how determined her Kubfu was, after all. Tula hovered at Julia's side, keeping an eye out for any Pyro Balls gone astray.

Oh, a Poké Ball. Had someone tried to catch a Pokémon down here but missed? Julia looked around, but aside from some curious wild Pokémon, she was the only one in the area. Oh, well. She'd have to put it to good use.

"Maybe," Julia said. "It's really cool, but it can also be really dangerous." She shivered as she remembered the invisible floor she had guided Shalin across.

[break][break]"Hmm... I wonder what it could be," Julia mused about the Head Ranger and Articuno.

[break][break]The Beartic were a more pressing issue, though. Like Josh, Julia didn't want this to turn into a full-on fight. She wished Mystic had Confuse Ray, but she'd just have to work with what she had.

[break][break]For several tense moments, both parties stared each other down. When Saber's fur crackled with electricity, one of the Beartic backed off, but the other just looked even angrier. It took a deep breath, then exhaled freezing wind that began to form an Icicle Crash above Josh and Saber.

[break][break]"Look out!" Julia shouted. "Mystic, Extrasensory!" She wanted to avoid using the big Fire-type attack in a room made of ice, even if it was Never-Melt Ice. Her borrowed steed concentrated her psychic power, then unleashed it in a psychedelic pink-and-purple swirl around the Beartic that distorted the space around it. The attack didn't hit as hard as Inferno would have, but between it and Thunder Wave's paralysis, the Beartic struggled to stand. It turned to growl something at its partner, who took off down the corridor.

"Come on, Isaac, you've got this!"

[break][break]The Tauros-Rodeo Game had quickly caught Julia's attention. With her experience on Shalin Nariya's Pokémon, she was confident she could get a good time. Imagine her surprise when she saw Isaac already on the Tauros's back! Of course she was going to cheer her friend on! Even when his hands slipped from the reins, Isaac held tight. Julia looked down at his legs to see how he did it. Huh, weird, were his ankles...?

[break][break]She didn't get long to look before Isaac was knocked off, fortunately to be caught by Knuckles, just after he passed the gold-medal time. Julia joined the other onlookers erupting into cheers at Isaac's triumph, her own yell growing even more enthusiastic when he accepted a huge Aggron plush.

[break][break]"That your friend?" one of the carnival-goers asked.

[break][break]"Yeah!" Julia replied. Then, she shouted, "Hey, Isaac, over here!"

[break][break]But he didn't seem to hear her, instead departing with his Pokémon. Weird... Maybe it was just too loud out here? Her turn on the Tauros could wait; she wanted to say hi and give a proper congratulations first. Unfortunately, by the time she'd weaved through the crowd, all Julia could see of Isaac was his blond hair in the distance. It wasn't until Isaac and his Pokémon were on the main street that Julia was finally able to catch up to him.

[break][break]"Hey, there you are!" Julia called. "Great job on the... Tauros..." Her voice trailed off when she saw the chibi Isaac carrying the Aggron plush. "What is that?" It was adorable, but also what?

Backlash from the League? Josh believing the act should have gotten him expelled and making him no better than Rocket? The more Josh spoke, the more Julia's chest clenched with worry. She tried to make it loosen up. Whatever he did couldn't have been that bad, right...?

[break][break]"Eris Halla?" Julia echoed. "Isn't she, like, 13?" How could someone that young be "high-profile"? It was bad enough that someone that young was associated with Rocket, something that made Julia's fury toward the organization grow further, but were they really sending kids to do high-profile work? More pertinent was that this was related to Josh's love for Raikou.

[break][break]The full story came to light after Josh remounted his plush Beast. Julia stared blankly at her fellow Ranger as she tried to process what she was hearing. He had thought that Eris, who would have been maybe 7 during the Kanto invasion—had she even been part of Rocket then? Julia recalled reading that she'd lost her parents during that war—would have had answers about what had happened to Raikou. And he had nearly killed a 13-year-old girl, Rocket or not, because of it.

[break][break]"None of this makes any sense," she said, voice quieter and flatter than Josh had probably ever heard it. "You... You thought this kid would know what happened to Raikou? And you attacked her over it? And nearly killed her?!" Her voice rose in disbelieving outrage as she continued, standing. "Did—Did she attack you first? Did she have any dangerous weapons? Were her Pokémon trying to hurt you? I-I don't understand any of this!"

[break][break]Disbelief, anger, confusion, and sorrow clashed in Julia's head, pitching her voice to a near-shout. This couldn't be real. There had to be a reason for it. Why would Josh do this? No matter how reckless he was, surely he wouldn't let someone innocent get hurt, especially by his own hand. That's not what Rangers did. They protected people, Pokémon, and the region itself. Even if that meant sometimes getting into fights, nobody was supposed to get caught in the crossfire. So what the hell was going on?!

Man, Julia had forgotten how weird it was to see all this stuff just sitting at the bottom of the ocean. Had these been thrown out or just lost? Julia preferred to think it was the former. It wasn't like they had any way to identify their owners otherwise.
