Julia giggled at John Sullivan's dramaticisms. "You'll never dethrone me!" she called back playfully. And she was right... until Yumi Hasegawa came along. "Curses!" She grinned as she climbed out of the tank.

[break][break]"Espathra's supposed to be pretty fast, too, isn't it? I wonder if it'd get along with Chester and Patricia." Little did Julia know that Espathra was a vicious opportunist that had adapted to surviving in harsh desert climates.

[break][break]Julia wasn't nearly as shocked as she thought she'd be at being right. Maybe because this was Shalin she was talking to. Honestly, she'd just thought of the most ridiculous thing a person could ride on a Venusaur, and as it turned out, that was exactly what Shalin wanted! Shalin seemed confident that her future Sygna Suit would protect her, too. Julia sighed with a fond smile.

[break][break]"Just promise to be careful, okay?" She didn't like telling people not to do something because it could be dangerous, but she cared too much about her friend's safety to keep silent.

Whoops, that wasn't how she should have adjusted her throw! Julia giggled somewhat bashfully at her mess-up and got back in line. Oh, well, she had plenty of time to get a good throw. Practice made perfect!

Julia gasped when she realized that she'd dug up a Tera Shard. This was awesome! She couldn't tell what kind it was under the water, but she'd definitely make good use of it!

The weirdest stuff always ended up in the water. Like, how did incense end up in the ocean? It looked like it hadn't been used, either! Of course, Julia would have to thoroughly dry it off if she wanted to use it, but that just further proved that the ocean was a weird place for incense to be! She wasn't complaining, of course; it was just one of those weird things you see when you're out exploring.

[break][break]It made her eager to see what else was down here, too. She steered Marina over to a suspiciously lumpy mound of sand and started to dig through it.

Another summer meant another dunk tank! The best part about them was that you could either test your aim or get a nice splash of cold water on a hot day!

[break][break]And hey, she even recognized the guy on the seat, BARNABY FINCH! He hosted news segments and talk shows a lot. Julia gave a friendly wave that belied the strength behind her throw.

[break][break]Marina let out a pleased sound between a growl and a hiss, her tail wiggling. Julia giggled and stroked the Huntail's head. The two had swum out a fair distance from the shore by now, the lights and attractions on the carnival fading into the horizon. Oh, man, that must have looked amazing at night. But nighttime carnival gazing could come later! Right now, it was diving time!

[break][break]"All right, this seems like a good spot," Julia decided. "Let's Dive!"

[break][break]With another excited growl-hiss, Marina dove under the waves, summoning an air bubble around her rider. Julia also carried a spare tank of oxygen, just in case. If another incident like last year's with Isaac Merlo happened, she'd be prepared!

[break][break]The way that Shalin hesitated and seemed embarrassed about her answer made Julia realize she'd touched a nerve. Oops. The last thing she wanted was to make a friend feel bad.

[break][break]"Everyone's different, I guess," Julia said, returning Shalin's shrug. "Nothing wrong with that. If we were all the same, the world would be boring." She capped her hopefully encouraging words off with a sincere smile.

"Oh, yeah. There was something like that at the Mirage Palace, too. But it wasn't just the Pokémon that were dangerous. There were all kinds of weird traps and stuff." She thought back to when she'd played this part of Shalin's route. "I don't think there's anything like that here, but isn't this near where Articuno rests?" She recalled the news that Laurence Anderson had lost contact with his patron.

[break][break]The castle was really pretty, though, like something from a fairy tale. The whole thing seemed to be made of Never-Melt Ice, just like half of the Mirage Palace. It would have been exciting to explore if not for the grim mission they were on. Still on Mystic, she followed Josh and Saber down the pipe of ice into the guard tower.

[break][break]"Oh, wow," she whispered when she saw the Pokémon swimming outside. It was a beautiful sight... but also kind of a scary one. If anything happened to the Never Melt Ice that made up the castle's walls...

[break][break]"Yeah," Julia replied, grateful for the distraction. "I always thought it was something hidden in one of those really long user agreements that nobody ever reads. Like, 'By using this software, you agree to let us turn you into a dating game' or something."

[break][break]Her eyes suddenly widened. "Wait a sec, I think this is the part where—"

[break][break]Julia whipped her head toward the dual growls and saw a pair of Beartic in one of the entryways. Their fur looked more bristled than usual, and they glared at the two trainers, as if daring them to make a move. Surprisingly, neither of them moved to attack... yet.

Though no longer in danger of hilariously faceplanting, Julia still felt lighter than usual when she slid out of Raikiri's saddle, which ended up making her prosthesis feel heavier. She walked with something of a limp as she readjusted to her own weight, but it didn't seem to bother her much. By the time she'd made her way down the stairs a bit slower than usual, she was walking normally again.

[break][break]She'd been here before for the Flagventure, but that fun memory was squashed by the solemn way Josh spoke. Julia remained quiet while Josh collected himself. Julia scrunched her eyebrows together.

[break][break]"I don't get it. Why wouldn't I be able to tell the Head Rangers? They're the ones who suspended you, right?" But then, with an owlish blink, she realized: "You're really not supposed to tell anyone, are you?"

[break][break]She sank down into one of the chairs in front of the Ride-On Raikou. "What the hell did you do?" And why wasn't it public knowledge?
