Keenan Toral seemed to have little trouble navigating the massive complex, able to locate the large, grassy battle court at the center of the Main Sector. The first several rows of bleachers were filled with Josh's fans, as well as fans of the rising star trainer that was challenging him for his Badge. "Glad to have you back, Kee!" Josh waved, remembering the trainer he had taught before. He even had his first Pokémon out, ready and raring to battle. "I see you waste not one millisecond! I like it that way. I guess this means we don't need to go over the rules, then! You seem to know them well." With that, he directed the challenger to the challenger's Trainer's Box, Josh's three Pokémon already standing in the one reserved for the Leader.

Once both trainers were ready to go, all three of Josh's big Pokémon crowding him to the point where he had to hold into the railing within the box, the two rose above the battle court. Braver, Josh's Arcanine, leaped off the platform, Saber and Verte sidestepping to give their trainer some breathing room. "Just catch Braver if you can!" Josh taunted. "But I doubt you'll be able to!"

Indeed, Kee was taking full advantage of the rules of Josh's Gym Challenge. While the challenger was permitted to swap Pokémon mid-battle, the Leader was not. Walrein's hailstorm could only mean one thing: a Blizzard attack was coming, and under the rules of the Gym Challenge, it was one he could do little about. His Flygon's time in battle would be limited, and that limit was shorter than the Leader would have liked.

The hailstones pelted Verte, using his greatest weapon against him. Josh had to go all-out and use the Flygon's nastiest attack from the beginning. Not like that was too different from how be battled to begin with! "Verte, use BOOMBURST!" he commanded. The Flygon's bug-like wings quickly got up to speed, humming then shrieking. By the time they had turned invisible, the wind they were creating got so intense that it not only blew the hailstones outward in all directions from it, but it may have begun to dry out the Water-type's skin if it was still close by. Josh covered his ears, preparing for the sonic shockwaves to come. Once the dragon's wingtips went supersonic, the deafening BOOMBURST that came with them even shook the trainer's platforms. Even the trainers' balance would be tested.

As soon as the hailstorm started, Josh knew exactly what was up, and had reacted appropriately. Boomburst was a move he never ordered the use of lightly. Not only was its destructive strength among the greatest of all Pokémon attacks, but the way Verte in particular used it could harm trainers and spectators, as well. Even Hoenn standard Gym safety protocols could only do so much against a layer of sonic booms generated from wingtips buzzing faster than the speed of sound. Even with protection, many spectators felt the need to duck behind their seats to take cover from hailstones flying toward them faster than a race car.

Josh could see the Walrein's thick blubber spiking and wavering in otherworldly ways from absorbing the force of the sickening vibration. The moment Verte caught his breath, his wing muscles at last giving out, the ice-type retaliated by blowing the hailstones back at him in a mighty BLIZZARD. If there was one thing dragons couldn't stand, it was the cold. Verte's wings were too tired to vibrate while cooling down from the Boomburst, leaving him no chance to deflect the move. Felled in a single attack, the side judge raised his red flag.

"Flygon is unable to battle. Judges' call: one point for Challenger Toral. Match point: Challenger Toral."

"You've really got me behind the eight ball, don't you?" Josh rhetorically asked. "But if you want that Badge, you'll have to get through the Pokémon I've had since I was ten years old. Saber!" the Gym Leader pointed toward the water-type. The electric wolf lunged toward Kee's Pokémon, sparks flying from beneath his paws as he rapidly built up speed. "DISCHARGE!" he commanded of the swift, yellow-and-blue runner.
