MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

"Easy there, Nephthys."

The moment the Milotic had the chance to jump into the water, she took the chance to splash around and even submerge herself. Elaine was thankful that she had decided to let Nephthys take the chance to do her equivalent of stretching. She didn't have to worry about falling off and plummeting into the water before the challenge even began.

This is definitely different.

The first gym challenge Elaine undertook was a straightforward one. A pure one-on-one between two Pokemon who refused to let the other gain even a single inch. The fact that she and Jeanne had been able to eke out the win despite the roughness of the opposition was something that surprised her, but at the end of the day, she had come to one conclusion.

Her Pokemon were more amazing than she had given them credit for. She had always trusted them, but the fact that even one of them could outlast an aggressive opponent like Gwyar and Gram was proof of that.

The momentum had built. The gym challenge was meant to push many aspiring trainers and their Pokemon to their limits.

Though this was hardly the traditional battle challenge, she wanted to accpet any challenge that came her way.

This path of strength was for her just as much as it was for her Pokemon.

"Are you ready?"

The sea serpent nodded her head. With that, Elaine smiled back at it and she jumped in to ride atop its back. Nephthys was not a battle junkie like Jeanne and Siegfried. But that didn't mean she couldn't rise to the occasion.

So, she would let her rise to this occasion. As trainer and Pokemon, they would work to win this race together.

"Alright, we're ready." She said, as she turned back to face Josh.

MAUVILLE CITY | Drift Highway | Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆☆
COURSE RECORD: 02'11"952
RECORD HOLDER: ACE SHEEKE

[player]https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-gamecube-gcn/f-zero-gx/220%20-%20Long%20Pre-View%20%28Course%20View%202%29.mp3[/player]

Having done her homework regarding Mauville Racing Grounds, didn't need guidance to get to Sector 2 of the vast facility. Once she arrived near her assigned course, she would see the brash and tall ACE SHEEKE, already seated on Buzz the Floatzel; the timid and short ERON IUNIS, on Resheph the Dragonair; and the reserved ARAVAN ESCHER, at the reins of Staccato the Primarina. Lastly, he would see the Gym Leader and Champion , making adjustments to the saddle strapped to Megalo, a Milotic whose tail scales gleamed brightly beneath the course's surface. It was a hot summer day: so hot that Josh rescheduled all afternoon races that weren't aquatic ones out of safety for Gym staff and Pokémon involved.

All his Gym Trainers and their Pokémon were already in the water, the Leader himself being the last to get wet. "Elaine!" Josh greeted his challenger. "Didn't think I'd see you on the Gym circuit! Great work at the masquerade - couldn't have done it without you. Phew, it is one steamy day!" The three Gym Trainers introduced themselves and Josh's Pokémon they were borrowing, one by one. Ace in particular looked fierce, as though he had his mind set on breaking his own record.

The gallery surrounding Sector 2's DRIFT HIGHWAY course was full, small as the stands were. The course was aptly named: while almost all of its turns were U-turns, they were wide enough that a Pokémon could splash around them with strong enough fins alongside mount and rider working together to properly shift their weight around. There were plenty of long and straight parts of the course where Pokémon could let loose and go as fast as they wanted.

Josh went over the rules of the challenge, required by Hoenn League statute. "See that arch near the starting line, with the long and skinny monitor on it? We line up behind that, and the countdown will be on that display. It will sound four horns and display '3, 2, 1, GO'. On 'GO', our Pokémon will start running. Pokémon are not allowed to use moves like Aqua Jet or Extreme Speed on the first lap. After the first lap, though, use them as much as your Pokémon can handle! Beat me to the finish line after three laps, or otherwise prove to me you can handle the pressure of split second decision making, and the Hoenn League Quick Badge is yours."

Once he had finished explaining the rules, Josh stepped off the channel's edge and allowed Megalo to lift him onto his seat. The other three Pokémon gracefully floated along the starting line. "Feels weird not to hear the Hoennian Regional Anthem because Staccato's racing rather than singing," Josh remarked as he slammed his helmet's visor down. If Elaine were to glance toward him, the challenger would see a laser focused expression, almost like he was in a zen state as he held Megalo's reins in anticipation of the green light.

INSTRUCTIONS

You will have 8 ranks to distribute among three skills. No more than 5 ranks can be assigned to any one skill.
  • SPEED: This represents how fast your Pokémon can travel. Each rank of Speed adds 10 to all your rolls, and an additional 10 to rolls on Speed-based Obstacles.
  • ENDURANCE: This represents how well a Pokémon can navigate difficult terrain, and affects how often a Pokémon can use its Boost during a race. Your Pokémon can use its Boost a number of times equal to its number of ranks in Endurance (min. 1). Each rank of Endurance reduces the Target Number of Endurance-based Obstacles by 20.
  • REACTION: This represents a Pokémon’s cornering ability. Each rank of Reaction reduces the Target Number of Reaction-based Obstacles by 20.

In the OOC notes of your next post, please note your Pokémon's distribution of skills.

You do not need to roll after your next post, but you will need to [ roll ] twice at the end of every post mid-challenge. This roll will be modified according to your Pokémon's skill ranks.

Example: If a player rolls a 60 on a post involving running down a straightaway as fast as possible atop a Pokémon with four ranks in Speed, their effective roll will be 140.

The Leader's next post will include a "mod post" that depicts the course's first Obstacle: a prompt that presents a challenge for the racers to overcome. Each Obstacle will include the following information:

Target Number: This is the number the racers need to roll at or above to overcome the Obstacle without penalty. While it is uncommon, an Obstacle can have multiple Target Numbers.

Intended Skill: This is the Skill that will apply to the Obstacle. It can be Speed, Endurance, or Reaction.

Special: Any extra rules specific to this Obstacle are located here.

Example Obstacle: The track starts out with a bang--a sharp, 135-degree left turn mere tens of meters from the starting line. The width of the turn itself makes recovering from a misjudged angle easier, but the track quickly narrows up again afterward. A guardrail on the outside keeps Pokémon from sliding off the course, but there is no such guardrail on the inside, and there’s a shallow stream that looks time-consuming to climb out of!

Target Number: 105 (Reaction)

Special: Track Points lost as a result of non-Water Pokémon rolling beneath this Obstacle's Target Number are multiplied by 1.5, rounded up.
After the players make their rolls, the Target Number is deducted from the player's roll, and the difference becomes the player's Track Points (TP) for the round. 100 TP corresponds to roughly one second of time differential. The race will consist of three laps, with three Obstacles per lap. After the ninth Obstacle, total Track Points will determine finishing order. The QUICK BADGE is awarded if at least one of the following conditions are met:

1) The challenger finishes the race in 1st or 2nd place.
2) The challenger finishes the race ahead of the Gym Leader.
3) The challenger otherwise demonstrates their mastery of the tenets of Mauville Gym, at the Leader's discretion.

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

Last time she had seen Josh, he had been dressed an almost knight-like attire during the murder at the masquerade ball. She had never met the man before, but the attire had left its own impression on her. Beyond that, he also seemed like an earnest soul, though not one necessarily built for detective work.

But that was fine. They were now standing upon his home field. This was the one thing he had boasted as his greatest skill.

The challenge would not be an easy one by any stretch.

"Didn't think I'd see you on the Gym circuit!"

"I realized that I couldn't stay as I was. So I decided I'd just get stronger one step at a time." Elaine had heard the motion of gratitude, but this was still a competition here. She was the challenger. So, she had to keep herself stronger. "This will be Elaine Highland's second step."

With her declaration to the gym leader and the others, she took her place with Nephthys as she listened to the rules.

They stood on the starting line, but viewing Josh made her realize something. The pressure was on. The gym leader himself was already in the zone. So, she too, could not lose focus. She was not a born racer, but she was not letting this end without her and Nephthys trying their damned best.

🎼 THEME SONG - Infinite Blue - F-ZERO GX ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

"Exactly," Josh nodded as he and his Milotic bobbed up and down on the surface. "That's the way to go about it: one Gym at a time. The circuit's tough; I had to use different Pokémon for almost every challenge. The creativity of our region's Gym Leaders is off the charts. It's why Hoenn's Pokémon League is one of the toughest in the world. Good luck to you, and may the best trainer win."

Once the five were lined up, three images of the legendary Pokémon Raikou at full gallop appeared on the banner monitor above the starting arch. Behind them was a "GET READY" prompt, Josh and his Gym Trainers tensing their legs in anticipation. The first of the three images began to fade away, with it sounding a loud squawk as a simultaneous aural warning that the race was about to begin. A second, then a third followed. When the final image of Raikou disappeared, the prompt changed to a green "GO" alongside a longer and higher-pitched squawk. The hum of Buzz's tails sounded like a marine motor as he and his rider dashed off the line, the rest of the competition's long and undulating tails churning up some rough surf behind them.

INSTRUCTIONS

After each posting round, a prompt describing the upcoming section of the track will be posted. These prompts may highlight different sections of the course on each lap. You will react to the prompt, then [ roll ] twice. For the first lap, the Leader's rolls will be capped at 130 before modifiers.

LAP 1 | OBSTACLE 1

Prompt: After a long and straight opening stretch, the course's titular feature loomed ahead: a series of three U-turns that started out gentle and wide, but became progressively tighter and more narrow. The first two, especially while the Pokémon were still getting up to speed, would likely pose little trouble, but the third would require braking or drifting! The former would likely ensure successful navigation at the cost of speed on the backstretch. The latter would be faster but more difficult, risking a collision with the inner banks if the drift started too early, or a painful scrape against the outer banks if they started too late!

Target Number: 125 (Reaction)

Special: Any TP lost as a result of a total roll that is more than 25 beneath the Target Number is doubled.

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

With the sound of the signal's squawk, the race had begun. Elaine and Nephthys had burst out from the starting line. She had no clue how far ahead or behind the others were, but that was not something she needed to worry about just yet.

The first stage of a race was about gaining momentum. The first U-turn was wide enough for that, but...

They're getting narrower.

Elaine was by no means an experienced racer. By no means was she even an amateur one. But even she knew enough physics to know what was going on at this point. Each turn would get progressively narrower as their momentum rose.

In that case...

Elaine was confident in Nephthys's ability to react. However, she couldn't help but want a bit more insurance. As long as she wasn't interfering with other riders or sabotaging the field, she was free to act.

"Use Dragon Tail to your side right..." Elaine muttered as the pair made it to the next U-turn. And the moment they reached its crest--

"NOW!"

In order to shift their momentum, a little extra force would of great help.

The chaos of the race's first moments was nothing new to Josh, but this one seemed more so than normal, the number of serpentine Pokémon on in the race making it inevitable that their long tails would clash. Megalo would likely find himself in last place early, given how quick Buzz typically was to jump off the line. Adjusting to one another's wakes was the biggest challenge, the Gym Leader doing his best to maintain a position halfway between the inside and the center of the aquatic course.

As the turns came, Josh leaned in their direction as he tugged on Megalo's reins in an effort to help the large Pokémon as much as he could. As the second and third turns came around, he loosened his hold on the water-type, slowing slightly to ensure he didn't slide all the way to the outside.

khAtFyBg

The five Pokémon were off the line in a flash, their wakes clashing against one another and threatening to unseat those whose riding technique was unrefined. ACE SHEEKE's FLOATZEL zoomed forward with the speed and agility of a Ribombee, the first to reach clear waters. The long-tailed Pokémon were slower to get started, but had much higher top speeds than the giant otter whose tails whirled and sounded like a marine motor.

The two MILOTIC, PRIMARINA, and DRAGONAIR went four-wide into the first turn, ERON IUNIS' mount being fast enough to keep pace with the competition despite being on the outside. As the course narrowed, so would the difficulty of maintaining the four-way battle for a somewhat distant second place. The final turn was only wide enough for three Pokémon; one of them would have to yield, whether voluntarily or forcibly. Making her move, ordered the use of a DRAGON TAIL from her MILOTIC. The powerful tail swish, designed to round the corner's apex and take a firm second place, was timed too early; the sound of the breathtaking swimmer's scales grating against the inner wall was feedback of just how much speed she had lost from her small miscalculation.

LAP 1 | OBSTACLE 2

Prompt: After three long and grueling turns that wore the competitors' fin stamina down, a long, straight stretch of rapids loomed ahead. The racers had plenty of opportunity to get their Pokémon up to top speed, and they would need it; the course abruptly ended in a small waterfall, necessitating their partners to make a daring leap to another section of track straight ahead! A leap that was not long enough would be punished with a much windier alternative that would leave the Pokémon fighting the current!

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

Making a bold first move had led to what ended up being both a failed attempt to get a bit ahead, leading to her falling quickly to the back of the pack. The race had started and Elaine Highland was already at a severe disadvantage.

The fact that Nephthys had hit the wall once was already enough of an issue.

"But it's not over yet."

A disadvantage was hardly a defeat. They had a chance to regain speed right here. Moreover, if they did this right, they could gain the lead.

This was no time for the pair to lose heart. The race had just begun. Elaine and Nephthys would be damned if they let it fall apart this easily.

Buzz was one quick water Pokémon; the next Silph Cup race he got the chance to enter, Josh would almost certainly use the Floatzel. He was an ideal Pokémon for time trials and setting course records; excellent speed and serviceable turning made him great for solo runs. His low stamina made him prone to crashing out from excessive contact, but it wouldn't be a concern if he just stayed in the lead! It was the philosophy the redhead was clearly using in today's challenge: stay in front and make traffic a non-issue.

Feeling the current push Megalo forward, Josh leaned in, water splashing on his helmet's visor from the Floatzel's wake. "Get ready to jump, Megalo!" the Gym Leader warned. With a flick of the reins, the serpentine water-type thrashed with his tail, performing a graceful leap with the hopes of landing on the upper half of the course.

vc5yATWa

The leap was a daunting one; on more difficult courses, failure by coming up short would likely cause a Pokémon to land out of bounds, resulting in a disqualification. Here, they had the safety net of landing on a slower channel beneath them. As the current swept them forward, the five Pokémon gracefully leaped skyward, the serpentine Pokémon flicking their tails harshly while ACE SHEEKE's FLOATZEL took advantage of its air sacs, diving and using the power of buoyancy to propel the team into the air.

It took great suppression of ERON IUNIS' instincts to keep his DRAGONAIR from engaging in true flight during the leap. The lighter and more aerodynamic dragon-type slowly passed Gym Leader and his MILOTIC, landing on the upper straightaway.

The others in the race were not so fortunate, ARAVAN ESCHER and ACE SHEEKE misjudging their angles and leaping too high, falling just short of the upper part of the course and landing in the winding channel below. 's MILOTIC had mistimed its leap, flicking its tail after leaving the water, resulting in the duo simply falling to the lower course. When the two channels merged, the FLOATZEL was still in the lead, but not by much! The challenger had fallen farther behind, trailing ARAVAN ESCHER and his PRIMARINA by around a second. There was still plenty of race to go, and with the course's most treacherous turn looming ahead, anything could happen!

LAP 1 | OBSTACLE 3

Prompt: Most of the Drift Highway's turns were long but gentle, making them easy to slide around. This was the one exception: a brutal, narrow S-curve typically only seen on substantially harder tracks. To take this curve without slowing down, Pokémon would need to trust their trainers' strength enough to hold on through a full left turn, followed by a full right turn half a second later... if the Pokémon itself was capable of shifting its weight that rapidly without capsizing in the first place! The vast majority of Pokémon would have their braking skills tested by this one.

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

It was a lot harder than Elaine had expected. Going into this whole ordeal, she was expecting that racing would be a different beast from battle, but the gulf was widening in her eyes.

Both she and Nephthys had mistimed their move yet again, causing the two of them to slip further and further from the rest of the pack. It was frustrating. But nobody was more frustrated than the Milotic who was trying her best to catch up with the rest of the crowd. Her heart was quickening and her breathing growing ever lighter.

"Easy there." Milotic wouldn't react well if she was too frazzled. So, Elaine took a short moment to rest a hand on her neck to calm her down. Nephthys had a tendency to get more anxious the more difficult things got so it was better to ease her out of it all. "No matter how this turns out, you're doing fantastic. So just do your best. No more."

In that moment, she saw a noticeable change. Sure, Nephthys's heart was racing. After all, she was working herself out quite a bit. But there was a decent amount of calm. Anxiety was irrational, but sometimes a bit of reassurance was all that was needed.

"Alright, let's push forward."

No regrets. That was the one thing she wanted to make sure Nephthys felt by the end of this as they neared yet another turn.

The chicane coming up was what gave the course all of its difficulty. The severity of the curve would whip Pokémon and riders back and forth unless they slammed on the brakes. Josh knew the course well enough that he didn't have to: he could simply let Megalo ease off his speed, coasting until the curves came. He wasn't concerned about the Dragonair passing him; he was aware that the curve was a bit of a struggle for Resheph.

There was always a chance the brash and reckless redhead could wipe out, too. Floatzel were incredibly quick, but they tired out fast, and could not take hits well. If they even scraped the sides, that could cause them to lose a lot of speed or even outright retire from the race. Wholly unaware of how far behind the challenger was, Josh subtly reined his Milotic to the outside before flinging them the other way, ready for the feedback of the sea serpent's long tail moving like a whip.

K6sWHhNq

The wicked turn on the backstretch would test the balance of both Pokémon and rider, many Pokémon choosing to slam on the brakes to avoid careening off the course walls. They were angled so that particularly tough Pokémon could pinball off them, losing no speed in exchange for a mark that would throb well after the race was done. None of the Pokémon in the race were particularly tough nor possessed the right body shape to do so, what with four of the five being serpentine in nature.

ACE SHEEKE and his FLOATZEL buzzed down the backstretch, flicking his whirling tails back and forth with excellent timing but rocking his trainer with mild whiplash, impeding his reaction time. The reckless technique extended their lead, but at what cost? Two laps still remained; would the redhead's body be able to hold out for that long?

Farther back, ARAVAN ESCHER, ERON IUNIS, and fiercely battled for second place, looking for a passing opportunity just before the chicane. The DRAGONAIR made a bold move, its tail swishing furiously as the dragon's rider hurled its reins to one side. The turn was timed too late, the Gym Leader, oceanographer, and challenger narrowly avoiding catching their MILOTIC and PRIMARINA in a pile-up. By the time the white-haired Gym Trainer had recovered, Elaine was right next to him on the inside, ready to make the pass on the course's final turn.

As the five racers crossed the starting line, an announcer-like sound byte played from the Gym's loudspeakers, the display on the starting arch flashing with the same message:

[player]https://file.garden/ZDeuoB-J4RNQd5aY/gyms/master/You_Got_Boost_Power.mp3[/player]

"YOU GOT BOOST POWER!"

Now, the racers' mettle would truly be tested.

INSTRUCTIONS

You Got Boost Power! Speed-increasing moves, such as QUICK ATTACK, AGILITY, and EXTREME SPEED are now allowed. Pokémon will be able to use such speed-increasing moves a number of times up to their Endurance ranks for the rest of the race. Speed-increasing moves will grant you ADVANTAGE for the posting round, meaning you will [ roll ] four times instead of two for that post and ignore the lowest two rolls. For the second lap of the race, the Leader's rolls will be capped at 150, before modifiers are applied.

Beware! Taking tight turns and stamina-draining Obstacles at high speeds can result in dire consequences, and may impose DISADVANTAGE, meaning the higher of the two rolls will be ignored. If the lowest two of the four rolls would still pass the Obstacle, Track Position for that Obstacle will be instead calculated based on the highest two rolls.

LAP 2 | OBSTACLE 1

Prompt: The course's three opening U-turns loomed ahead a second time, though racers would find the timing for navigating them would feel much different, what with their Pokémon already going at full speed. This would be doubly true for Pokémon who fully embraced the course's name, choosing to drift around the long turns rather than twist their bodies via traditional means. There would be little time between curves to adjust, and fin muscles might start to feel the burn!

Target Number: 130 (Reaction)

Special: Using BOOST POWER on this Obstacle will change the Intended Skill to Endurance from Reaction. Any TP lost as a result of a total roll that is more than 25 beneath the Target Number is doubled.

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

She was doing better. Nephthys had calmed down. Though it was hardly the perfect show or even an adequate one to gain time, the two had finally been able to make a move that wasn't nearly destructive in every way. Granted, it was still a close shave that nearly caused a collision.

But that was hardly something Elaine could hold against the Pokemon trying her damndest.

"Keep on going, Nephthys. Don't worry about first and last place. Just focus on the course in front of you."

Erase all distractions and focus only on the task at hand. She knew full well how important the capability to do that was. So, she would instill that focus onto the race. They still had a full two laps left.

There was a chance they could still turn this around.

Josh was proud of Megalo for keeping as close of a pace with ACE SHEEKE and Buzz as he did. The Floatzel was one of Josh's fastest Pokémon, but also one of his most frail. One hard impact with a wall could be race-ending for the speedy otter Pokémon. Ace was a skilled racer of his own right, having been employed at Mauville Racing Grounds since it opened. The orange and white species was fast, but had a tiny metaphorical fuel tank. If he was going to catch up to him, it would be at the end of the race, when the Floatzel inevitably ran out of oomph.

Megalo's, on the other hand, was quite large, and his streamlined body also made him an efficient swimmer. Josh gripped the multicolored serpent's reins tightly before jabbing his knees into Megalo's sides. "This is our chance! Megalo, use DRAGON DANCE!" With sweeping tail strokes, the blue and pink scales at the back of his body turned a draconic purple, the Pokémon madly swerving back and forth to build up great speed. Josh braced himself in preparation for the harsh turns the Milotic made, even submerging as the Champion's mount rotated his entire body to turn harder.

DRAGON DANCE is used.

With the introduction of speed-increasing Pokémon moves, the complexion of the entire race changed. Pokémon could float, slide, and twirl around curves faster than ever. With increased speed, however, came increased responsibility. Those confident in their Pokémon's turning capabilities could go all-out and leave the competition behind, but those who overestimated their prowess were subject to dire consequences, such as ARAVAN ESCHER. While he held off on his PRIMARINA's attacks, he did not slow the fairy-type one bit navigating the opening stretch's increasingly sharp U-turns. The vocalist let out a shrill yelp as its scales scraped against the channel's submerged cement and letting ERON IUNIS and make up valuable ground against him. The two were neck and neck until the DRAGONAIR's tail vanished into a blur of immaculately-timed EXTREME SPEED, giving them a rough half-second edge over the challenger.

Even the Gym Leader was not immune. The DRAGON DANCING MILOTIC rammed the inside of the channel as a result of signaling the turn much too early. Their impact was with such great force that he was ejected from the saddle completely. having to swim back down to sit in it once more before they could take off. They had lost so much time that Leader and challenger would find their MILOTIC swimming alongside one another as the backstretch came.

ACE SHEEKE and his FLOATZEL cut through each turn with sublime precision, the water-type's tails buzzing against the cement from getting just a smidge too close to them. Even a single degree sharper would have caused painful scrapes and a great loss of speed. Half the gallery watched the intense, four way battle for second place farther back, while the other half was fixated on the redhead and his incredibly fast Pokémon. He continued to push the FLOATZEL's limits. For he wasn't content with just winning. No.

He was on a mission to break his own course record.

LAP 2 | OBSTACLE 2

Prompt: After the leap on the backstretch were two fairly long straightaways, the second narrowing over time. They were separated by a gentle right turn that would be trivial for most Pokémon to make even at full speed. While it was a great place to let loose with a burst of speed, Pokémon would have to slam on the brakes when the course narrowed - that deadly chicane was coming!

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

If there was any proof that persistance and not simply giving up at the start were worth it, this was it. The two of them had been dead last, but the race was not a simple sprint. It may not have been a marathon, but one simple bad movement would be enough to throw the entire race into a state of flux.

Such was the case right where she was here.

The other Milotic in the race and its trainer, the gym leader, had fallen to just barely behind Elaine and Nephthys due to a miscalculation.

"Let's keep on barreling through!"

The edge they gained was minimal, but for the two of them, it was enough to make them smile. After all, that was proof that their efforts had some meaning there.

So they had to keep going. They'd hold the risky moves for now. They just need to beat past the narrowing path before them.

Though Buzz and the redhead were running away with the race, the blowout performance didn't bother Josh at all. The purpose of these races was not for him to win; it was to ensure the challenger's bond with their Pokémon was adequately evaluated. Despite the slip-ups on the first lap, Elaine and Nephthys seemed to be of one mind. Shifting one eye toward the duo, Nephthys seemed to react almost instantly to the trainer's orders, whether verbal or tactile. They seemed to be able to tell what the other was thinking. It was that level of mastery that was needed to keep up with the Gym Leader that could have easily turned pro with the skills he had now.

Both his eyes shifted back to the course ahead of him. He knew Megalo could blast ahead of the rival Milotic if they tried. Having run the course many, many times, he had a plan. One he would not deviate from. Deeply inhaling, the Champion made a risky move. "Dive, Megalo!" he ordered, the beautiful serpent sumberging and attempting to surface on Nephthys' other side in an effort to get a better angle for the whip-like turn coming up.

may have been narrowly in last place, but her tenacity kept her in the race as the course narrowed. The two MILOTIC swam alongside one another almost in perfect sync, neither one giving the other even the slightest edge. That was when Josh made a daring maneuver: diving beneath his opponent to make the chicane less tight. He had failed to account for the DRAGONAIR in front of him, whose tail was camouflaged by the hue of the channel around them. His Pokémon and ERON IUNIS' became tangled up for a split second, barely able to recover in time for the back-to-back right angle turns.

Ever the opportunist, swerved her own MILOTIC around the two-Pokémon accident, cutting ARAVAN ESCHER and his PRIMARINA off from the inside line as the home stretch approached. When she rounded the last turn, she glimpsed ACE SHEEKE and his FLOATZEL gracefully leaping over the falls far ahead, giving her an idea of just how distant of a second she was. She didn't need to win. As long as her current position held, that Badge would be hers!

LAP 2 | OBSTACLE 3

Prompt: The course remained narrow in the home stretch, making going any more than two wide dicey at best. The long straightaway ahead was the racers' best opportunity yet for their Pokémon to let loose with AQUA JETS and the like. Some Pokémon might need it to cross the starting arch; that jump from the top of the waterfall was rather long!

MAUVULLE GYM CHALLENGE

Aquatic Course

Through a flight of perserverence and good fortune, Elaine and Nephthys had managed to reach further in the front of the pack. It was not first place yet, but it was a boon for the pair nonetheless.

"Alright, now's the right time."

Elaine muttered as they made it to the familiar last leg of the track.

"Let's speed up here! Dragon Dance!"

This was not like the risky turns and winding paths they had just endured to this point. They had gotten a feel for this part of the course the last time they were here. The length of the path, the placement of the waterfall, and the amount leeway they had.

There were few opportunities to do something like this, so if she wanted to widen the gap with those behind her, she needed to use this opportunity to pull ahead.

They were going for broke in that very moment.
