For some time, she lost herself in the sensation of racing. The powerful muscles coiled beneath her as her friend’s leg ate up yards of forest floor. Aubre reveled in the way the wind toyed with her hair. Though Shalin was only a few feet behind, it felt like they were in their own little bubble. Sure, she may not understand the urge to ride a flapping wing, but this wasn’t hard to comprehend. [break][break]

Arthur’s gallop slowed to a trot as they reached the edge of a bluff. Beneath her legs, the Farigiraf’s chest heaved. But one look at his face told her this was simple exhaustion, not any kind of anxiety attack. “You did great, Artie.” Scarred fingertips ran absentmindedly through velvety fur. “You’ll get used to that leg in no time.” The nervous smile on the ginger’s face is reflected in that of her mount.[break][break]

A quick glance shows that his new leg is shaking. With an apologetic look, Aubre slides from her friend’s back. As she does so, she takes a moment to appreciate the horizon. From this distance, “It really is.” Rustboro is a beautiful wonder of architecture. Its tall buildings gleam like crystals in the sunlight. The redhead half turns to face Shaln. “I feel like there’s a good lesson here.” But, try as she might, she can’t a way to put it into words.

Turning to Shalin the doctor inclines her head. “Thanks for the race.” A similar glance is tossed toward Arthur. “He needs to rest up a bit.” Guilt was apparent in the giraffe’s askance gaze. “You two go on ahead.” She’d just look at this view a little longer.

Before Aubre could speak, Alastor offered up a lazy wave. His normally relaxed blue eyes are surprisingly protective. His pencil lay poised against his notepad, like a sword half out of its sheath. When it came to his sister, the lizard was pretty damn protective. “Heli.” The electric type greets Johnathon as the humans begin their silly dance.

“I’m glad to hear it. I realized should have included the address—” There was probably some other place here with that name. “—but I didn’t want to spam your inbox.” It wasn’t like sea names were rare around here. There were at least twelve restaurants she knew of with the word ‘coast’ in them. Still, they were here now, and there was no need to fret about that.

Not when he was here, and her last hope was burning itself out. When indicated, she practically falls back into her seat. Is it hot in here? Is that just me? A hand wraps around her cup of ice water until her knuckles whitened. Any thoughts of ordering an appetizer vanish. Right now, she doesn’t trust herself to speak. The idea of food makes her stomach churn.

Part of her wanted to just get this over with. The other wanted to run for the hills, anything to preserve that last sliver of hope. The thought of a present cure was a great balm for the future. Just let him put his order in. You know how it feels to be rushed.

She doesn’t correct the title. Sure she’s a missus, but that’s not important. “That’s right. I’m Aubre, and this is Alastor.” The lizard offers a hesitant nod. His frill raises with each breath, a reflection of his trainer’s nerves. The next question makes her chew on her lip. A few dozen different responses threaten—most of them full of self-loathing. “As comfortable as I ever am.” She finally admits with a sigh. There is a glisten in her eyes that quickly fades.

Her hands shake as the doctor pulls out her phone. Her screensaver is a family photo. She and her husband holding their daughter’s hands in front of a far-off beach. “I’m sorry I wasn’t very—I just have a hard time talking about it.” Tilting the screen toward herself, the doctor takes a deep breath. Then she flicks through a recent album. “Some part of my brain thinks it will go away if I just don’t mention it.”

Aubre’s breath turns shaky. “And you know what they say about pictures and words.” She slid the phone over to him. The last few inches end in a toss, as if she is desperate to free herself from a jellyfish. “I know it’s not pretty.” On the screen is a picture of her back. Only a bra in place. The burn scars are angry, looking as if they were lain yesterday and not six or seven years ago. It’s a twisted, monstrous hunk of flesh. The normal musculature is almost impossible to discern, only the straps serving as landmarks.

Seemingly aware they were being discussed, the scars flared up and the redhead winced. Screw off. I'm done with you. [break][break]
Her teeth gritted as she bit back a noise of pain. “A Houndoom’s responsible. And, well, we all know what that’s like.” Except most people didn’t. They knew what the science said, but not what it actually felt like.

Finally, she took a drink. “I’ve tried everything.” A single tear rolls down her cheeks. For some reason, she doesn’t mind the vulnerability.

Alexei’s shout of pain drew the redhead’s gaze. Green eyes fixed on the blonde for a moment, concern apparent. “Alexei, are you—?” Her words died in her throat as the Dragonite dropped a yard. This gave them just enough clearance to save her a similar burn mark. [break][break]

An irritated grunt from Marcus drew out a quiet apology. “Sorry! I’m here! I didn’t mean to turn around like that! I just wanted to you know...” Eyes backlit by a ferocious competitiveness, the dragon type growled. He’d be damned if they did all this work for her soft heart to ruin it all. Aubre’s eyes peered through the pattern ahead. “I think it’s time to climb.“

Tightening her knees around the flying-type’s middle, the doctor fearlessly approached the next obstacle. She’d watched a lot of videos on this course. Some people might think it made her a worry-wart, but Aubre thought it made her prepared. Well, as prepared as you could be to get shot at. A Beak Blast detonated a foot or two to the right. The heat and bright light made her eyes water, but they’d almost blinded Marcus.

Grabbing the unused reins, the redhead jerked her mount to the left. “Tilt 30 degrees and climb around—roughly a foot and a half.” For a second,she expected the Dragonite to ignore her. He was the one who could fly after all. But, to her surprise, he did exactly as requested. His tiny wings avoided slamming into the edges of the attack grid. “Keep your tail straight for me.”

If she’d looked down, she’d find an unfamiliar face grinning back. But she kept her eyes forward. A surprising feat considering how much time she spent doing the opposite.

Aubre shook her head. Sure, she had used him as a distraction, but that wasn’t all he was. Not by a long shot. Gym leaders were vital parts of Pokemon husbandry—ensuring future generations respected their partners. Honestly, she couldn’t believe she’d asked him to do anything. Now that the situation had calmed down, it felt almost mean.

“Well, I wouldn’t say that—” The redhead murmured sheepishly. She doubted these Pokemon posed any real threat to Noah. “You would have just found a different solution.” Her green eyes dropped to his belt before flicking back up. On the way to doing that, his shifting hand caught her attention. It took her a minute to connect the dots.

“I do?” A gym badge? For what? For a moment, she wanted to refuse. To tell him there was nothing special in what she’d done. “I don’t think—” Maybe she should insist she’d just been doing her job. That this stuff came naturally to her. But that sounded conceited. Instead, scarred hands reach for the tiny chunk of metal, almost as if it might disappear. It’d be wrong to refuse. And, well, who am I to question his judgment?. Isn’t it nice to win something without putting a friend on the line?

Her gaze slid over to Roman. The Kabutops—though incapable of smiling—says all he needs to. All it takes is a nod. So, instead of finishing her protest, Aubre nods. “Thank you.” She murmurs to herself as she cradles the badge. A warm, proud smile threatens to spill over. But his question draws her eyes up. Me? In war?

It’s ludicrous! She couldn’t look at a dog without teleporting to the worst night of her life. She sometimes struggled to pick out cereal in the morning. But wasn't everyone here already a victim of this stupid fight? Pulled into something they didn't start?

“I have to think about it.” And, even if Aubre meant it as a polite brush-off, her words ring true. To truly help people—and not just rich people’s Pokemon and strays—would be a welcome change. And, maybe, these scars prove some part of her is strong enough.
