Pokemon training is a cultural right of passage. For most it is a momentary escape from mundanity in the years between childhood and adulthood; for some with great talent it is the pathway to the kind of job every kid grows up dreaming of. Very few are right about which category they fall into.

John wasn't right. Passion told him he'd spend his whole life battling. That he'd be an ace trainer, maybe even get to face the elite four. Now he wakes up at four to go to his data entry job and gets home at six. His pokemon are glorified house pets, the ones he hasn't released or passed on to practicing trainers.
