“Well, you are directing it. Fatigue of mind is the worst kind not to treat,” she replied, once more sounding like she just wanted to, well, sound smart. Another of the perks of looking like this was she could do that and no one really seemed to bother. From her old….well, ‘old’ self it would have probably come across as more condescending.



But here, paired with a simple smile? Good enough to get away with it. “So, let’s see, try to survive that, obviously, then set up old reliable!” The orders were simple. To try and get away from the pesky plants, dodging that pocket monster, while howling to cause jagged rocks to appear from the ground around them, making it harder for the opposition to manoeuvre.



Or, well, that was the plan at least.

Yeah….this was really unlucky. Well, it could be helped. Or at least that was what Lash would say, if she wasn’t slightly annoyed by some of this. Maybe it was the way this was set up, or maybe it was the grin from earlier. But she was getting irked.



Which….led to her taking a deep breath, trying to get herself calmed down. Yes, she looked like this. But she specifically did not want to act or feel childish. Sure, she might use it to her advantage to be seen this way sometimes, but most of the time she did not want to be like this. Hence, just getting angry at something like this it would be….bad.



Though it was not easy, either. She already dreaded the day when she had to go through the full excess of puberty again. Ugh.



“Anyway, try to break through that with a Rock Slide,” she ordered. Part of her wanted to go harder, but with how these battles were set up, it would just look petulant. And she did not want to look, well, like a petulant child. In the meantime, Lyca summoned up some rocks, trying to throw those straight through the flames at her opponent.

Somehow, that man’s grin ticked her off. Lash was not quite sure. It was not quite a dung-eating one, but she found it irritating for some reason. Lyca, likewise, was irritated at how proud the little one was about having scored a hit like that.



Sure, it counted as per the rules of the tournament, but still…

Anyway, it was probably best to not be too careless from now on. “Well then, greet it with a Sand Attack, see if that works.” Stacking evasion was usually a good move. At the very least that way she could always just say that it was bad luck if they got hit again.



Lash did like to have her bases covered while Lyca prepared to pounce the oncoming little ball of fire when the time was right.

Well, that was a prime example of someone not giving Lash her undivided attention. But enough of the meta puns. For now, the young-looking one instead gave a brief nod towards the newcomer. “Good day, miss. You should just take a nap if you need one after this. That’s better than fighting when you are tired after all.”

This time, it was Lyca the shiny Lycanroc (Midnight) who nodded, but more in affirmation of this – before giving some side-eye towards a trainer that really ought to heed her own words more often. “Anyway, I am Lash, this is Lyca, and we are going to do our best to not take the L here!”
…that was how youngsters these days talked, right? At least Lash estimated as much.

“This your first time?” Lash’s question came quite unabashed, but she figured that she might as well ask. Chances were, she wouldn’t see that girl again after this, anyway. But the raven-red-haired one could see just how tense this girl got when the fight started, which was something all too common with those that did not have a ton of experience. “You should relax a bit. Don’t be too rigid.” She would have said something about how a Pokemon could feel that too and become rigid as well.



But, uh, she was not quite sure if that one could even become rigid. For what it was worth though, the poison type flung some garbage or something at Lyca, but the canine managed to dodge that for the time being. “Anyway, Lyca, go and throw a Rock Slide. See if you can herd it into the Stealth Rock while you’re at it,” she ordered herself, trying to press on what she considered an advantage, at least for the time being.

“You say that, but I don’t believe you. Anyone with a shred of self-esteem estimates others in some manner,” she replied, mostly sounding like a high-schooler very proud of all the big words strung together.



Still though, she did not completely ignore the battle, either. In fact, both her and Lyca were on high alert when that Smorescreen came up. “Don’t be a target,” she ordered, which saw Lyca perform a Doubleteam in the hopes of not being hit, while preparing a Rock Slide to retaliate with if something did come their way.



Eventually, a torrent of water did pierce the screen, but it would be all but luck given the smoke and evasive moves as to whether that would hit or not.

Heh. Shaking hands, almost like equals. It was rare for men this size to offer that. The usual was like, petting her head or something like that.
Lash would take it, of course.
“Um, hello Mister Colin. I am Lash, this is Lyca. Seems like this is going to be a dog beats dog kind of match,” she introduced herself along with a nice little pun. One would be forgiven for thinking that she was just a youngster that got the proverb wrong, of course.

But she did not. It just was not the kind of situation where anyone would eat anyone. Her own handshake was naturally weaker than his, but it was also stern and secure. The kind that someone who used them somewhat frequently would have, really. “As for fairness? Well, I only got Lyca to use of course, so I will use anything to my advantage within the rules.” She shrugged. “That’s what someone like me has to do, after all.” She mostly meant as a woman living on her own. But the age she was constrained to certainly did not make it easier, either.

The mighty blue terrastalized Samurott tried to meet Lycanroc head on, a contest of strength and determination between two fierce combatants, all ready to give their all in this fight of fights. She probably should have saved her Z-Move for the grand finale to have a more fitting end, but this was coming down to the line anyway. Despite type advantage, it was quite open as to which of them was going to win.

Well, in respect. In another, rock simply beat scissor.

Hence, the two met, exchanging blows, only to separate once more. It took a few moments to sink in, but eventually it became clear who won, with the Samurott presumably either fainting or being recalled anyway. Still, this certainly could have gone either way. So, ultimately, win or loss was a matter more for the bookkepers than anyone else.

Still though, she would take it. “Anyway, wonderful, then it’s a date. You got any preference or does the winner get to pick between us?”

“A bite? I should go and grab one after this. You want to join me…Yuina it was, right?” A bit of a peace offering was extended to the other by virtue of using that name. The girl was showing that she had some gusto here, after all. Unlike that last time they’d met where she had just let a suspicious kid through into restricted airspace.



Or maybe Lash was just hungry and figured that having someone else around would make it fun. But for now, combat had to end. She could feel that it would be over soon anyway. Yuina had come in with type advantage and terrastalization, so this was a terrible matchup anyway. Still they had done well, all things considered.

Besides, it was not quite over. “Let’s end this,” she ordered and Lyca complied, whirling around to the Samurott coming out of the shadows and trying to meet it straight head-on with its whole body at top speeds.

“Well, you’re in luck since we are meant to use only one anyway, highlander style.” That reference probably outed her as an old soul in a young body immediately. Or, well, it would have had. She wasn’t quite old enough mentally to actually have contemporary ties to that. Plus, people didn’t believe her even if she flat-out told them, anyway.



Anyway. Combat. That girl looked like she wasn’t very experienced. But Lash was not going to go deliberately easy on the other just because of that. “And yep, Cassie. We’re here to fight. So are you, so we can just go whenever. No hard feelings one way or another, right?”



Lash would give the other time and room to respond to that, of course. Once that was done though, she would initiate this properly. “Well then, since we’re all ready here – Lyca, start us off with a nice and smooth Stealth Rock!” The blue rock dog would soon spring into action, howling to cause jagged rocks to all but grow out of the ground around and between the Pokemon, making it difficult to move without being injured. Well, for others at least. Lyca was used to this, so that was not going to be too much of a problem.

“Seems like you got some proper fight in you after all,” Lash replied, seeing the two Pokemon meet in mid-motion, exchanging blows. This time, her Lycanroc definitely was not able to evade the Razor Shell, meaning that it had to briefly fall back and lick its wounds, as to speak.



Sadly, her attempt to end this had been thwarted that way. But that just meant the fight wasn’t over yet. “Let’s try another Rock Slide, Lyca. Unlike someone I could name now we’re not going to just use the same move over and over and over,” she ordered with a bit of a smirk. Sure, it was a good and effective attack. But she always looked down on people trying the same thing over and over.

Sure, expecting different results did work, as this showed. Lash was just a bit pretentious like that. Some flair simply was needed, which was why Lyca flung some more jagged rocks at the opponent, albeit less than during the time she’d used the Z-Move.

“You say that. But my actual name is Lasciel. Lash is just so much cooler, don’t you agree?” There was a good reason as to why she almost never went by her given name. Well, at least she thought so. While not necessarily resenting her parents for this one, she was not exactly fond of the name, either. It was a bit too difficult for most people to grasp correctly right away and sounded pretentious.



Lash though? That was short and snappy. Just as she currently was. And as she had been, when making that name her own. Same for Lyca.



Speaking of, that one tried to dart to the side, away from the bulked up punching thing. “Be thrifty,” she ordered her Lycanroc, which understood the basic idea. Namely, to Sand Attack the opposing Pokemon in the eyes, trying to make it miss and potentially do some damage in the process as it whirled up some of the earth of the arena into fine dust, blowing it in the other’s face.

Now that was the desired result indeed! Lash did not exactly revel in the pain of Pokemon, despite her profession. She was a poacher, but she was humane about it. Sure, she did not go out of her way to make her victims comfortable, but neither did she do so just to be cruel.



But in battle? A success always saw her beaming a smile at what was happening. The stones impacted the Samurott with a satisfying sort of crunch, evidently dealing at least some damage. The other did not give up, of course, and tried to hit with that Razor Shell again. A dangerous move indeed and Lycanroc sought to dodge it once more. It was more difficult now, given that it had just unleashed its strongest attack.



But this was not the time to rest. This was the time to push the advantage. “Try to end it swiftly, before it can find its footing again!” Her order to the other was clear – and Lyca immediately surged forward, trying to Sucker-Punch the other out of the match.
