Camila was at the clinic and Saskia was fulfilling Ranger duties, leaving Nikolaj alone to tend to the house. A younger neighbor stopped by to drop off fresh vegetables Ducklett eggs. And, as expected of rural folk, they got to talking.[break][break]

"You do a lot of solo hobbies, don't you, Kolya? Fishing and stuff. You ever think of finding some buddies for that? My son uses this phone app to find new people to spend time with, called AmiGo. Try it sometime."[break][break]

So, after putting away the gifts and sending off his neighbor with a bundle of chopped firewood, Nikolaj settled into his armchair with phone in hand.[break][break]

Sign-up was easy enough. He failed to capture a non-blurry picture of himself when prompted, though, and couldn't think of what to put in his profile except: I love the outdoors & my family.[break][break]

The app then taught him how to 'swipe' on people — right for those he thought might be a good match, left for those who weren't. He practiced a few times, but then the unexpected happened.[break][break]

Saskia's profile popped up.[break][break]

A storm of confusion and alarm overcame Nikolaj. What was his daughter doing on this app? There were a lot of pictures of her, too. Such a public display violated the strict sense of privacy he had for his family. So he did the first thing he thought to do: leave a comment demanding that she delete her profile.[break][break]

Hours later, Nikolaj stood in the kitchen, cutting vegetables for soup, when Saskia stomped through the door and announced her presence. He looked up from the cutting board, his expression set into a stern frown.[break][break]

"Did you delete it yet?" he asked by way of greeting.

Nikolaj gripped the Salamence's saddle as tightly as possible as they took off. In the air, he kept a hand on Soyeon to keep her steady. While they flew between geysers and Pokémon attacks, he cast a backward glance at the battle. Garchomp had taken to the air as well, continuing the defense against the enormous Vikavolt.[break][break]

Soyeon's shouts drew Nikolaj's attention back to their front. She held an object in her hands that looked like little more than earthy debris. Still, her plan seemed sound — as long as they could pull it off.[break][break]

"What do we have to do to expose this element?" Nikolaj yelled in Soyeon's ear over the roar of the wind.

Nikolaj frowned. "Can't you hire someone to help out? Another doctor, I mean. Not an assistant."[break][break]

Even after all these years, he didn't understand the intricacies of the medical profession. He was a simple man who knew how to build things with his hands and address basic injuries. The bureaucracy of Camila's field was totally incomprehensible to him.[break][break]

"Is it a money issue?" he asked, worried that was the case. Between her clinic, his business, and paychecks through Ranger work, they made enough to get by. But it seemed everything cost more these days.

Nikolaj heeded Freya's command instantly. After the geyser dissipated, he rushed over and jumped onto the back of her Salamence, behind Soyeon so he could ensure the scientist wouldn't fall off.[break][break]

Thankfully, his Garchomp could take wing, too. As the plume of fire from the Charizardss attack spread across the dry bamboo, Garchomp lunged for the Vikavolt, claws raking it in a SLASH maneuver.[break][break]

"Get us out of here," the old man said to Freya, tone urgent.

"Noted," Nikolaj said about the geysers as he continued forward. Soyeon clearly had enough robust exuberance for the landscape for the three of them. Let the youth have their fun; he'd keep watch for danger.[break][break]

Garchomp cut down another cluster of bamboo. A gleam in their hollow stalks caught Nikolaj's eye, and he paused for a closer look.[break][break]

"Huh. There's gold in these plants." He reached a careful hand into one of the halved stalks and plucked out a small nugget of the metal. "Do you think this is real?" he asked, extending his hand, palm up, toward the women.[break][break]

Just then, the enormous Vikavolt swooped toward Soyeon. Though she managed to dodge it, it did not seem interested in leaving them alone.[break][break]

Shoving the gold into a pocket, Nikolaj called for his Pokémon. "Garchomp! TAKE DOWN!"[break][break]

The Dragon-type launched herself at the Vikavolt, slamming into the towering Bug-type before it could descend upon Soyeon. The two Pokémon crashed into the nearby bamboo, disturbing a small swarm of Kartana that fluttered out of the way.

Nikolaj prowled through the bamboo forest of the Ultra Crater, more familiar with the landscape now than during his first expedition there. At his side was his Garchomp, who cleared away bamboo stalks with her claws wherever they grew too thick.[break][break]

As a senior Ranger, he led the way for his companions, two women who had entered the rift with him. He knew freya morningstar from a trip to Pacifidlog Town, where they had protected baby Tirtouga from predators while the newborns scrambled to the sea.[break][break]

But the other woman was a stranger. soyeon kwan, she'd called herself. He knew nothing about her except that she claimed to be a scientist.[break][break]

A geyser erupting in the distance disrupted Nikolaj's thoughts. He slowed to consider it, then continued his original path.[break][break]

"Keep an eye out for geysers," Nikolaj called to the women from over his shoulder. "We'll try to avoid them, but there are a lot in this area."

"Sure," Nikolaj said when Camila offered a taste of her shaved ice. He accepted the spoonful she held out, allowing his wife to feed him as if they were still young lovers.[break][break]

Immediately, he made a face. Her choice of flavor was way too sweet for him.[break][break]

"It's good," he said, though he coughed. "Very sweet, though. I don't know how you can eat so much sugar, Cami."[break][break]

Back at their beach blanket, Nikolaj carefully put Saskia's snack in the drink holder of her chair. The girl was playing with her Pokémon some distance away, leaving her parents to continue chatting by themselves.[break][break]

Nikolaj eased into his own chair. "You don't have to thank me," he said to Camila. "I know you would've regretted not coming with Sasky and me. And you need it, you know? You can't work all the time, baby girl."[break][break]

Little did he know of her true anxieties.

Saskia was down the slope before Nikolaj could stop her. He sighed and rested a hand against an unblemished trunk of a tree while he waited for her to return. When she did, she brandished a crystalline object at him. Frowning, he took it into his hands.[break][break]

A Tera shard. He'd heard of them, of course, but hadn't seen one in person yet. If this object had caused the nearby Pokémon to act in such a way, they needed to keep it out of the wrong hands.[break][break]

Nikolaj removed a handkerchief from his pocket and carefully wrapped the Tera shard with it. "We'll take this back to Ranger headquarters with us. They'll know what to do with it," he said.[break][break]

After stowing it away, he ruffled his daughter's hair. The gesture was full of fondness and pride. And though his voice was gruff, a warmth suffused it as he said, "Good job today, Sasky."

"Of course," Nikolaj said at once, kneeling next to Saskia and taking the antidote from her. His hands moved expertly to prepare it; anyone who owned Pokémon knew how to administer a potion or an antidote, at the very least.[break][break]

The man sprayed the medicine onto the wound. Within minutes, Gastrodon would feel better, the poison neutralized.[break][break]

Nikolaj stood, removing several empty Pokéballs from his own backpack and throwing them at the incapacitated Grimer and Muk. Several flashes of light filled the area for a brief moment. When they faded, only the balls were left, filled with detained occupants.[break][break]

"Can your Elgyem bring them back up here with its psychic powers?" Nikolaj asked Saskia with a nod at Oleg. He was not going to risk his knees on the steep slope.

Understanding dawned in Nikolaj when Saskia released her Gastrodon and ordered it to use RAIN DANCE.[break][break]

"Smart thinking, dochka," he praised her, grasping her shoulder in one of his hands and squeezing lightly. Then he turned his attention to the mass of Grimer and Muk at the bottom of the slope. "Again! DISCHARGE!"[break][break]

Electricity filled the air once more, boosted by the torrent of water. The Poison-type Pokémon cry out in pain, many falling unconscious, others becoming paralyzed.[break][break]

The enormous Muk, however, managed to fire a GUNK SHOT at Saskia's Gastrodon before slumping atop the others, locked in paralysis. The filth and toxins seeped into the slug's body, POISONing it.
