Truthfully, he was going to call out and ask why she was running, but by the time he decided to do that she’d already crashed right into him and sent them both to the ground.[break][break]

He let out a grunt as his backpack swung into a nearby trashcan and tipped it, knocking it over into another trashcan. The loud echoing chained together well enough to attract something, even if they didn’t know fully yet what it was.[break][break]

”Ugh, ‘the hell are you even talking about?! I’ve been walking in this alleyway for half an hour and you’re the first person- thing! I’ve seen!” He was absolutely whining, but the situation called for it. Anyone would get frustrated and mad if they were made to walk their least favorite street in the world on loop![break][break]

Ito scrambled slightly to stand, taking a moment to readjust the backpack carrying his spectral companion. He’d long since given up on getting them to sit in a pokeball after all.[break][break]

”You hurt?” He leaned down to offer Akira a hand, unaware of the reason of her rush.

”Filled with blood? Isn’t it a cave with a buncha rocks?” Despite how tense he was, he wasn’t gonna be able to take such a dramatic line so seriously, even if his opponent dropped it in the same breath as sending his Sneasel out to slicing his precious V into ribbons.[break][break]

”Wha- to hell with it, hit back with V” He called out to his partner pokémon in response, who let out a sharp crepitation in acknowledgment. A handful of blades fell upon it, yet its maw merely opened up in response, only to glow with violet light.[break][break]

The bug lunged up and met the blades with sharp mandibles, meeting them head on to both protect itself and strike back against the speedy pokémon that pressed it.[break][break]

It was a brief clash, but the impact rippled throughout the Venipede as if it’d been hit directly, a shock of pain rolling through it for the first time in too long. Still, it needed to push on for its trainer’s sake, so it did, scuttling to the side after the first impact to swipe a second time after a brief interval.[break][break]

It wasn’t the strongest of all bugs, but it was tenacious at the very least.[break]

Ito had… well, frankly negative idea where he was- actually, that was untrue, he recognized the streetlamp he just passed ten minutes ago coming up on his right again! [break][break]

This must’ve been hell, that’s what he decided. There was no other way to describe being caught in a loop in his least favorite part of Castelia.[break][break]

Agghhhh! This was all because he fell down into that rift! If he’d just paid more attention for that girl’s sake he wouldn’t’ have had to swap places with her and take the tumble, but here he was, wandering through the Ultra Deep Sea![break][break]

The specter in his backpack let out a distorted cry, mimicking his frustration. Like its trainer, it also hated this alleyway, it hated it an irrational amount for a ghost type capable of traveling through shadows. He couldn’t blame it really, since the alleyway reminded it of its first ever loss.[break][break]

That’s what he thought was the issue was anyways, even if his thoughts would soon be immediately hijacked by the pain of his knee impacting a wall that wasn’t there before, and the landscape changing to reflect a different alleyway.[break][break]

This time though, his eyes settled upon a girl halfway down the alleyway, looking just as lost as he was.[break][break]

Ito understood that the spiky haired delinquent who stood in front of him was- at least by the reasons the league gave- likely a bad person. Anyone working with Team Rocket had to be, that’s just how things were. They were criminals out to prevent others from reaching ultra space, from reaching the real battleground where all the real trainers awaited them.[break][break]

He wasn’t one of those real trainers, just a fledgling city boy in over his head doing what he thought was ‘best’ for a little change, and maybe to live up to the standards of that dream he carried.[break][break]

Meaning… he couldn’t let this the rocketeer standing in front of him stop him, not without a fight.[break][break]

”I… I won’t lose then. I can’t prove anything if I can’t make it against one grunt!” He said, settling back into a pitching stance, only to underhand a pokeball as a red flash burst into a toxic insectoid.[break][break]

We’re gonna win, V. He thought, only for the small bug type pokémon he called a partner to let out its battle cry in sync.[break]

Rounding the corner of the pathway he followed, the path suddenly opened into a much wider area, this one filled with a single scientist with his back to a wall, and a group of four or five or so who were clearly up to no good. [break][break]

At least, that’s what his first impression said.[break][break]

”Vor! Dragon Claw!” Ito called out to his partner, leaving the Haxorus free to charge ahead, imbuing its body full of draconic energy. With the benefit of surprise on their side, it’d lunge once entering the clearing, then swing its axe like head.[break][break]

The already tumbling pokémon was caught in a combo, and sent flying down the exit pathway without its trainer, who sprinted off after it to deal with treatment.[break][break]

”Colton, right!? I’m Ito! I’m here to help!” He shouted to the scientist, hoping he was the one he was supposed to be helping in the first place.

The caves were far from quiet, and all Ito could really hear from within them were the shouts and yells of the people locked in conflict. He caught himself sprinting faster than he usually ever drove himself to, pushed forward by a sense of responsibility he usually wasn’t ever shackled with.[break][break]

’Just come help out man! I’ll be in deep trouble if any rockets get into this place on my shift! I’ll pay you! I swear!’[break][break]

He’d accepted such a sudden request without thinking twice about it, and only recognized the potential danger afterwards, rushing along to meet up with his ‘partner’ he’d been called out to help.[break][break]

… meaning he’d need to get over the unbearable feeling of paranoia, as if he’d put himself in the worst possible position somehow. Haxorus roared as it ran ahead of him, but even a part of Ito still could tell that his partner was just as tense as he was.[break][break]

That similarity was one of the two things he always felt so thankful for, more than anything else.[break][break]

His eyes snapped open as her words floated over to his ears, making him wonder if he’d already fallen asleep that quickly. It wasn’t like he had the worst luck, but a situation like this seemed a little too good to be true.[break][break]

… then again, he didn’t have much to lose by taking things at face value.[break][break]

”Nah, it’s fine. I’m just happy to meet another person in these woods, been lost for a while now, even if I come through them often enough. I’m happy to take you up on that.” He waved off her concerns, pushing himself up from the tree’s roots to speak to her evenly.[break][break]

He didn’t say it, but there was something about those sharp crimson eyes that made him feel like he was even more out of place than normal. Unconsciously, Ito found himself a bit more on guard, though it was more like he was doing it for the royal’s sake, rather than his own.[break][break]

”Feel free to call me Ito, Arxien’s the family name, but that’s a bit too formal, ain’t it?” Still, he managed a smile, happy to have a guide of some kind. ”I’m in your care.”

[attr="class","star2"] His dad always said that it was best to keep clear of forests when you had a map, since you’d lose out on the fun of exploration of the area and the discovery of new pokémon that might live there. Ito couldn’t fault him for his reasoning either, since that’s what any pokémon ranger might say when he spent all his time stuck in a big city away from any forests.[break][break]

However, Ito still thought his old man was full of it. This wasn’t fun in the slightest. At best it was a new, interesting experience he wouldn’t want to go through again, and at worst it was a painful reminder that he needed to find another route around this forest or just head to another part of the Region so he didn’t need to keep walking back and forth through it.[break][break]

According to the totally real, definitely physical map that absolutely existed in his hands, one so real he could one-hundred percent feel outside of his mind’s eye that he totally wasn’t pretending was there, he’d taken the route he was on to get back onto a main pathway. He hoped- assuming his assuredly not make believe ~~mental~~ map was right- to make it through this brush and end up running into another human![break][break]

Unfortunately, reality found its way into his life once again, as was usual with his treks through this Arceus forsaken forest. The final swipe of his hand revealed not a main path, but a small clearing, devoid of anything but vines, leaves, wood, and crushing disappointment.[break][break]

Actually, that last one was Ito’s contribution, not the forest’s.[break][break]

”… alright, everybody out, we’re resting here for however long it takes me to regain my confidence.” The young man with hair the color of snow pulled the backpack off of his back with a sigh, then fished out three pokeballs. He gave each a rub, only to toss each up into the air as he made his way for the tree, letting each of the contained creatures out to stretch their legs.[break][break]

For the spectral Spiritomb and blades Haxorus, the environment was unfavorable, but ultimately fine. They let their respective cries out and sat down near their trainer, following his pace.[break][break]

However, his Venipede couldn’t be any happier, scuttling around the clearing like mad, happy to be back in a place that resembled the very forest it came from originally.[break][break]

”Now give me five… gonna take a nap against this tree and see if I won’t dream of a princess coming to show me the way out…”

[attr="class","star2"] It had been about five hours since he’d seen another living, breathing human being. On its own, that wasn’t exactly a problem, but when you combined that with the oppressively unpleasant forest environment of the Petalburg Woods, he found himself wondering if those five hours had actually been three hundred minutes, or if he’d accidentally gone to hell.[break][break]

Of course, he hadn’t gone to hell. That would’ve been preferable to the torment of having his only his own thoughts to keep him company, as well as the specter that claimed his backpack as his home, not that they could really even talk.[break][break]

A distorted humming came from the sack tied to those twin straps that wrapped around his shoulders. Apparently it had sensed his dissatisfaction, and slightly poked out of the cracks between the zipper. That endless swirl of purple and black was comforting to him, but not many pokémon would want to approach something so malicious looking.[break][break]

”Could be worse, haven’t had to dodge any taxis here. Five points for Petalburg, I guess.” Ito said aloud, not bothering to keep his thoughts to himself. Why even try and look like a sane person when you’ve been going through a fit of insanity for-[break][break]

Just then, a woman’s shriek interrupted his not so internal monologue, causing him to freeze up. A number of ideas on how to approach the situation flooded his mind in an instant, but they all fell away the moment his legs started to move on their own.[break][break]

He broke into a sprint without considering what could go wrong, keeping the pace until he threw the vinesto the side and found-[break][break]

”Are you okay!?”[break][break]

There he went again, getting nosy just for the sake of being nosy. Hopefully she didn’t mind the glare he always wore.

You never knew what to make of the world, outside of the gifts he left you the last time you spoke.[break][break]

Was it because you were just like him and didn’t want to reach out for anyone after that loss settled in? How could you, when the bedrock that made up your world was smashed like the fragile glass it always was. How could anyone expect their child to carry on as if it hadn’t happened, as if you were just supposed to be well and fine enough to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and set out without even being able to call your Mother and Father for updates or advice.[break][break]

“What a terrible joke.” You said to yourself for the forty-second time that week, giving your complaint tracker a margin of error of about one to three. Even as that shadow you cared for so dearly that you’d hollowed out a part of your backpack for the stone tried to console you with spectral arms, another sigh left your lips all the same.[break][break]

Loss is hard to cope with, and you never had the chance to learn how, but now you do. It’s a big, wide open world out there, and here you are, sitting at the side of a bus stop in a foreign land because the Castelia atmosphere became too heavy of a reminder.[break][break]

Still, your eyes track to a pair of kids younger than you, talking about how they want to be champion when they grow up, and how they always admired those strong trainers that made acting in sync with their pokémon look like the easiest and most amazing thing in the world. Hearing their dreams makes you smile, but it doesn’t give you the motivation you need.[break][break]

Thankfully, you aren’t the only one listening.[break][break]
