An adorable Slowking waddled out of the little stream that the route overlooked. Mage already had one Slowbro; together, they would make an amazing team.

"Yo!" Mage hollered, his voice smoky from his cig. The Slowking looked up ponderously, a dopey grin forming on its face, as a Pokeball hit it smack in the head. Mage then turned back to Akira.

"Sorry, you were saying?"

Mage folded the notebook in his hand, deepening the arches in its soft card cover. He was here to smoke and write, but this girl was more interesting than static, constructed poetry.

"Just vibing." He took a good drag from his cig and stubbed it out on the concrete. The scent drew out a Shedinja - the second one Mage had encountered in a short while. He didn't catch the first one, but the second one was probably a sign. Mage threw a Pokeball at the bug in the sliver of time it was visible.

"You?"

After tucking his new friend into his pocket, Mage slanted his gaze towards the lady. She sounds polite and proper, which was at odds with the eye patch. He wondered what her origin story was.

"Your Pokemon still need help? I got some Potions if you need. The shops are a bit far."

Mage spied another wild one - a Kirlia - a few feet away. He threw another PokeBall at it to secure a good capture. Fairies intrigued him. He would be happy to add a brighter, happier Pokemon to his dour team.

Mage's black-lined eyes looked up from the gravel to regard the formal-sounding lady in front of him. These proper people just rubbed him the wrong way. Just be yourself, you know? Why force yourself to be this fake persona you're obviously not?

But the way she cajoled her tired Umbreon to fight the Flittle was quite cute. Finn smiled, although it wasn't clear if it was a sneer or laugh.

"Your Umbreon seems good now," he quipped. He heard a yawn come from behind him - a Slowbro wandered up behind him, waddling happily.

"Oh, wanted some of this?" Mage asked, waving his slightly smoking herbal cig. Of course a Slowbro would want a whiff.

"Heh, come on in." Mage threw a Pokeball at the Slowbro's pink squishy head, and the creature probably didn't even realise it had been caught.

Mage leaned back on a grey park bench, letting the smoke from his herbal cigarette flutter out from his mouth. He sat where the park met the unkempt side of the route. It was a nice place to empty his mind. Just well kept enough that he didn't feel like he was sitting in real bumfuck wilderness, but messy enough that it allowed the other parts of himself to surface.

In one hand, Mage held his herbal cig. Some Oddish leaf and Dustox powder shit; good for third eye clarity. In his other hand, a scrunched up black notebook that contained flashes of poetry. Maybe Mage could get some writing done on his day off.

Mage didn't believe the man. 

Back when Mage clawed his way out of the cocoon of lies that the monks had woven around him, he had encountered all kinds of liars. The kind who spoke words like molasses, making you want to believe them; the kind who, chillingly, believed the lies themselves. 

This white haired man was neither of them. 

He had something to hide. Why else would he need to explain where the smoke was blowing in from? 

Catlike, Mage's eyes flickered. 

Before he could say anything, Mage heard a familiar sound, one that drummed right into the root of his soul and wiped off the teasing smirk that had begun forming on his face.

Like a cat fleeing from fire, Mage dragged the man by his sleeve and hid behind a jagged rocky protrusion. His eyes were wide with a memory rising from a watery grave. 

Soft and padlike. The sounds of the monks' ceremonial shoes on temple wood. Growing louder and closer. 

Mage brought a trembling ringed finger to his lips.
