With Yakumo offering to keep guard, Shouko turned her attention back toward the fluffy insect. The fact that it was willing to take her up on her offer of food was encouraging, and while it relaxed and consumed the fruit, she began carefully moving around it, looking for the source of its bleeding.

While she was distracted, Beatrice had taken to watching the Jigglypuff lookalikes. Despite that they hadn't made a hostile move immediately, she could sense that their intent was... definitely decidedly hostile. She began to drift back toward her trainer as Yakumo reached out toward one of the wild Pokemon, sensing that the situation was imminently going to swing against them.

"Y-Yakumo?!" Shouko called out, immediately standing back from the injured insect, her eyes darting up toward the direction of her friend. Her eyes went wide as she saw the blood that'd been drawn, and the creature she'd have regarded as cute gnawing at her friend's flesh. "Yakumo, just... hold on just a moment...!"

Surely they couldn't be that powerful, right? Grasping one of the balls at her belt, Shouko lifted it and clicked the button in the center, a flash of light releasing a Deino into the cave. "Velvet, we've gotta get past these things and help my friend!"

Her partner immediately sprang into action without command, instinctually understanding the danger of the situation. Letting out a deafening roar that rivaled the crashing boom of Metagross hitting the cave floor, Velvet opened her maw and breathed out a mass of bluish-white fire toward the attackers. As the dragonbreath kicked up the pink mist and created large swirls of the substance, Shouko froze as a familiar voice echoed in her head.

"....Gabe....?"

The defensive, hissing behavior didn't deter Shouko. In fact, she'd quite expected it. Not only was this a wild Pokemon, but it was a wild Pokemon suffering from some form of injury. It was only natural that the little creature would be feeling defensive. She changed gears for a moment, and instead of grabbing a Potion first, she took hold of a piece of fruit that she'd packed in her bag and gently laid it in front of the fluffy bug.

"Here, a good-will offering," Shouko said, smiling softly as she finally pulled out the Potion afterward and held it at the ready. Glancing up, she nodded as Yakumo hovered nearby. "No, it's definitely strange... and it's hurt, too. I wanna try to treat it, if I can. If it'll let me..."

Fishing out the rest of her first aid supplies, Shouko gradually slipped her pack back into place over her shoulders and carefully waited to see if the injured Pokemon would come around and allow her to approach. Her amber gaze gradually shifted around as she waited on the creature before her - noting her friend's Steel-type perched upon the cave wall. It must've been one of the ones she'd borrowed from her sister.

"Ah, you okay?" Shouko asked the fluffy mon as it skittered a little in a different direction, her eyes shifting up to take in the newly arrived wild Pokemon. Much like the one she was attempting to help, they had that unshakable familiarity in their resemblance to Jigglypuff, but it was clear that they weren't quite the same. And it was hard to know what their intent was, while they just hovered nearby... "Uhm, Yakumo... they're just staring at us. What do we do?"

Ironsides and Voyager... It took her a few seconds, but she was able to recall which Pokemon those names corresponded with. Skarmory and Arcanine. In hindsight, it felt silly that she'd had to ask - Gabe had bragged about those very Pokemon on multiple occasions, and she'd had to ask for reminders about them so often that she couldn't truly forget it at this point. She just needed the reminder.

As Navy voiced his order, Shouko quickly scanned through the options. Oh, this was always so difficult... so many favorites... so many flavors she'd enjoyed with Gabe and her parents... maybe that meant it was time for something different, then? "I think... I'll have the raspberry chip. Just a single scoop for me, though, please."

Now that they'd ordered, the conversation could turn back toward other things. "Ehe, I guess I'd never thought about Eevee being so tough to get. Since mom and dad were affiliated with the Ecruteak Dance Theater, they were able to make arrangements to get a pair of them. Guess I never really realized how privileged our family's been..." Particularly compared to the Navidsons... the man who stood before her now had lost both of his parents when they were all just children, and now he'd lost his brother as well. The thought was almost enough to cause her to tear up on the spot, but Shouko fought the feeling back.

"...wow, you really do know some impressive people," she said softly, accepting her ice cream and having a taste. Even though she'd felt good about the flavor, it was still surprisingly good, enough to brighten her smile a little. "Obviously, working with someone I know would be a little more comfortable, but I would be happy to learn from whoever I can."

As she enjoyed her ice cream, Navy finally managed to truly catch her off guard. "That... that's not fair, ehi..." Shouko muttered, rubbing at her eyes as they began to water. "You can't just say things like that... besides, you didn't see how much he was smiling while he bragged about his older brother."

Noting the change in her trainer's demeanor, Beatrice gently floated around and rubbed the girl's head with a rope end.

"...deep breaths don't wake me up from whatever this is..." Shouko whined, her flailing quickly growing weaker as she started to pant, clearly exhausting herself through the unnecessarily violent exertion. At least her friend was willing to show her some kindness and help her get out of the air. "I think novice trainers usually have some idea of what they're getting themselves into, Yakumo... I feel way out of my depth with this."

Once they were down in the swirling pink mist, Shouko carefully turned her body and got her feet onto the floor. Rising upright very slowly, she took an experimental step. And oh... that was not comfy. She planted her palm against the smooth, cool stone wall beside her to brace, fighting the feeling that her body wanted to start drifting off the floor again.

"...I just wish you'd told me it was gonna be this weird, you know," the trainer said after a moment, finally looking up at Beatrice. The Chingling happily bounced up and down now that her partner wasn't in distress, and Shouko gave the little bell a shaky but still reassuring smile. "Yeah, I'm okay. Just not used to drifting like you are."

Now that she was just standing... not moving... not floating away... she could kind of appreciate the cavern.

Just a little bit.

"...did you say something, Bea?" Shouko asked, tilting her head as she glanced toward her partner. Crossing her rope ends to answer the trainer, the Chingling turned toward the source of the noise, slowly drifting and leading her trainer along. It took just a few seconds for the pair to find a strange creature emerging from the fog.

Shouko knelt down in front of the fluffy insect, looking closely. The physical structures that adorned its body were similar to Volcarona, but its size and posture leaned much closer to that Pokemon's own pre-evolution, Larvesta. As she examined the oddity of a Bug type, she finally noticed the blood glistening on the stone floor behind it.

"...you poor thing," Shouko said, carefully pulling her backpack around her shoulder and fishing through one of her pockets. "I'm sure I've got potions and other supplies for this... we'll get you patched up..."

"Oh? Hmm... I guess someone with Pokemon as... potent as yours would have trouble letting them out just anywhere, huh..." Shouko hummed, tapping her chin as Beatrice gently floated back up to hover above her trainer. "Well, I heard so many stories about your partners and the exploits you've had together, so I'd love to meet them whenever we're in a less inconvenient place!"

The girl nodded to herself, smiling softly. If there was one thing that Gabe had done more than anything else, it was sing praise to his older brother. And Shouko found all the stories she'd been told inspirational. "...yeah, I'm certain that even someone like me could learn something, being around someone as strong as you..."

Shouko immediately perked up at the offer of a treat. "I mean, you don't have to, but uhm... I guess if you want..." Taking a step forward from her seat, she began to follow along behind Navy, her partner drifting along just above her shoulder. "Mint's good. I can't remember all the options they have, and they might have a good seasonal option, so maybe I'll wait and see what they have before choosing."

They were walking now, and they'd gotten through their other topics of conversation. What else could she bring up...

"Oh, uhm... my mom and dad were really good to me and helped breed my starters, so I know I was kind of lucky on that front. I know it's been a while for you, but what kind of partners did you have, when you were first getting started?"

Was it like slipping into a chilly pool? Or more like being swallowed by the cool winds of an impending storm? Shouko wasn't certain which description fit the sensation better as shimmering colors rippled around her vision. Her fingers curled tightly into Yakumo's forearm as panic set in, and she clutched her Chingling tightly to her chest as she squeezed her eyes shut, fighting off the sensation of tilting in every direction at once.

"Yakumo, this is too much," she muttered, her words scarcely more than a whimper as they spilled out of the rift in space and into the misty chamber. The fact that they continued to drift above the cave floor kept her from knowing that they were truly free of the tunnel between worlds as her body actually began to tilt.

It wasn't until her friend spoke up that she opened her eyes... and immediately let out a shriek. "Wh-why are we just floating?! I want down!"

As the trainer flailed her arms, sluggishly swimming toward the misty floor of the cavern, Beatrice gently floated down alongside her. For the Pokemon, moving like this was second nature, and she wasn't certain how to interpret the reaction of her trainer in this situation.

"W-wait for me, Yakumo..!"

Trailing a short distance behind, Shouko took careful steps as they made their way into Granite Cave, clutching Beatrice to her chest as she peered around the dimly lit chamber. She'd been excited when the younger girl - someone she'd only just met, and seemingly already become good friends with - had invited her to come exploring... but now that they had begun delving into the cave, she'd begun to have second thoughts. Particularly once she was en route to her destination, and began to hear murmurs of odd happenings in and around the cavern.

But this was what it meant to be a trainer... right? Exploring new places, even if there was room for things to go a little bit sideways. Setting aside the rumors about what was happening inside, Granite Cave in general was known as a relatively safe area, though stiflingly dark in its deepest parts and difficult to navigate at times. So as long as she was with Yakumo, and as long as she had her trusted partners, she could be confident in the situation.

Finally, Yakumo stopped advancing and gave Shouko a chance to catch up. Coming to stand beside her friend, she glanced over and offered a small smile as she tilted her head. "What is it, Yakumo?" She wasn't quite sure what had caught the girl's attention, and before she had a chance to figure it out, she'd been grabbed and yanked along!

"Yakumo, wait..! What are we doing?!" It was only as Yakumo pushed toward the rift that Shouko finally saw it for what it was, even if she didn't entirely understand it. She resisted a little, but her friend pulling her along had already thrown her off balance, and she was falling through before she even knew what was happening.

Even at a distance, he isn't hard to pick out from a crowd. Even after several years, he still had his distinctive hairstyle, and between his build and his features, the only thing that'd changed was just how much his age showed through... even if only a little. Even as butterflies threatened to get the better of her, she couldn't suppress smiling back the way she always had, when he called her by that familiar nickname.

"Hey, Mi--" she began, before faltering and shaking her head. That was the name her own mom and dad used. The name his parents would have used. It wasn't their name. "No... Navy. Gabe would never forgive me if I called you something else, ehihi... anyway, it's good to see you too."

While the words were as true and natural as anything else she could've said, her smile twisted into an awkward half-frown again as she reminded herself of the one they'd both lost.

Thankfully, Navy was already to the rescue. "Ah, this is my little companion Beatrice," Shouko said, grateful for the chance to focus on something else. She gently closed her hands around her Chingling and stood from her seat as she turned it to face the older trainer. For a few seconds, Beatrice studied Navy closely, leaning forward in Shouko's grasp, before jostling her body back and forth, her arms and rope lengths waving in unison as she rang out in greeting. "Ah, I guess Bea must like you. I had a feeling she would."

On a subconscious level, Shouko registered the subtle shift in the couch cushion as someone took a seat next to her, but it quickly slipped from her mind as she continued focusing on her breathing, on recovering from her mad dash for the Institute. She'd seen a few others already sheltering inside as she'd entered the lobby, but only in passing. Maybe one of them had come over, hoping to chat. Well, if that was the case... she could oblige them, once her lungs weren't burning anymore and she could form coherent words.

While her trainer recovered, it was actually Beatrice that first took interest in the girl who'd joined them on the couch. Gently rising out of her trainer's arms, the Chingling tilted to the side and angled herself toward the girl with the pale hair. The small bell had also noticed her, without a care in the world in the middle of the storm, but unlike her trainer she hadn't just brushed it off. And now a new person, soaked to the bone by torrential rains, had joined them.

Was this girl friendly? Bea's instincts told her that she was.

Offering the newcomer a pleasant expression, the Chingling gently rocked back and forth in front of her, letting out subtle rings with each motion as it greeted her. From beside her, Shouko's breathing had slowed and she'd slumped deeper into the couch, but she hadn't yet opened her eyes.

"Bea, don't... don't bother the other trainers... okay...?" Shouko requested, tilting her head back to rest against the back cushions as she sank deeper into comfort. The little bell looked toward her, but paid the remark little mind as she looked back toward the other trainer again, eager to have her curiosity satisfied.

Shouko gave a small nod as Shalin spoke up, smiling a little as she slowly caught her breath. It was at least good to have it confirmed that she'd found the person she was supposed to meet up with. "Yeah, I'm Shouko Kawade," the trainer said after a final deep breath, finally composing herself enough to really push upright properly again and examine the party a little more thoroughly.

Chingling gradually floated back down as the Yanmega approached her trainer, curiously investigating the sky hunter as gave a greeting. Chingling's curiosity, however, was immediately eclipsed by Shouko's awe. "Is this a Yawnmega?" The young woman leaned in close, her eyes widening a little as she studied its predatory figure closely, gradually taking steps around the side of it as she did. "Yanmega swarmed around my house in Johto when I was real little, and I'd always wanted to go out and chase after them... oh, this is so cool..."

Cautiously, she reached out and caressed the metallic carapace that covered the Bug-type's body.

"...o-oh, uhm... yeah, I did get to read the email, of course!" Shouko said after a moment, blushing as she realized that her own eagerness to check out a Yanmega up close had gotten the best of her and blinded her to proper manners... she glanced up at Shalin again, smiling. "I don't have anything that can fly at the moment... is it really okay for me to fly on... Flit?" She glanced uncertainly between the Pokemon she still had her hand on and the trainer that'd already offered him up, a mix of excitement and nerves evident in her hesitant expression.
