There was nothing more to it. It was a personal matter to ask someone who's - mostly - a stranger who Luke recently met, perhaps for a second time. How would you react if someone you barely know goes, "Hey, how about that potentially traumatic event in your past?"

Yeah, probably not good.

Fortunately, the matter of names, sports, and food quickly overtook the conversation. All of them are relatively more palatable as far as topics go. Luke'd happily embrace them.

"Good ol' Nimbasa, eh? Sport's one of the only good thing about it."
[break][break]
Before the conversation would go deeper into the veritable rabbit hole he created, Luke segwayed into the opportunity to talk more about food. It's the more urgent matter, after all.

"Oh, that sounds good." Not to mention it's not so different from the food he usually eats, "I'll have some of those. Do you have any other finger foods on the menu? What about drinks?"

Luke rises from his seat, memorizing the potential order while scanning more additions. His mind wanders about, arriving at another interest subconsciously, almost as a reaction to the exertion.

"So, what kind of sports did you do?"

His condition might have halted that, but that thought flew over Luke's head.

Lucas likes to think his experience in sports would help him take a running start in Pokemon training, something that shouldn't be that far from training regular people. His seniors from Nimbasa Stadium told him that, and they applied their theory to how they raised Pokemons for sparring and games alike. It seems to serve them well so far.

The problem is this gym focuses on racing and riding, things Lucas, unfortunately, has little experience with. Still, the fact they returned his email with a call for a potential interview means he must have something of interest.

The decor of the building is full of depictions of a personification of a primal force, a beast worshipped by numerous civilizations as a testament to its mighty power. The almost-pious tributes accompany the race tracks outside the windows, a modern-day circus maximus.

Romantic, perhaps, but also intimidating.

Lucas breaks off from the gathered crowd to approach the gym's lobby. He figured, even if he fell short of the qualifications, he'll have plenty of time to spectate later.

"Hello. I'm here to try for a position," Lucas nods, "Yes, I have an appointment."

Ah, of course. Back in Unova, huh? Luke'd be surprised at how the chef's features are still in his memory, but it's not like he remembers him flawlessly.

Hell, he can't even remember his name.

"I'm from Nimbasa, yeah. Pretty impressive you still remember my voice." Facial details tend to be the first ones to recall for barely-recalled memories.

Though, with his unfocused vision, acute hearing, and seemingly glassy, almost ethereal pupils-

Oh. Oh.

"Name's Luke. Lucas, actually, but Luke's easier to say." He audibly drags one of the nearby chairs to sit on, tipping the other redhead to his current location. It's impressive that he managed to pinpoint the menu without looking, though Luke figured that memorizing the locations of everything was the bare minimum for being competent in this job with that handicap. "If it was Nimbasa, probably when I was running around the City, huh?"

He did that almost every day, so it was a safe bet.

"So you work here, then? Do you have any recommendations? I figured the takeout menu's different than the dine-in menu." He'd probably avoid the dishes with broth and get those he could eat on short notice without worry.

The Maractus minded her business when Lucas encountered her. It had taken roots on the side of the road in the grassy fields, trying to soak up as much sunlight as possible, and certainly wasn't expecting a trainer to ambush it with a Pokeball.

In a way, he can respect its apparent attitude, staying firm even when the world - read: him - was trying to impose their will upon her. It almost persuaded him to try and recruit him into the team.

But would she be a good player? Doubtful. Maybe she'd do her job in the medical team, but that's Lucas' secondary priority.

Keeping his options open, Lucas jogs past the cactus, leaving her vibing with the breezy, chill winds.

It turns out the mound beside the can was sentient after all. And not in the haunted sandcastle kind of way.

Luke minded his business, digging out a particularly-deeply-buried soda can before the abrupt stick assault. The grains of sand started to fall over his Nimbasa-vintage football uniform, perhaps aiding in his unintentional camouflage.

Perhaps the poke wasn't the strongest of thrusts, but it still hurt.
[break][break]
On his side, there's a mostly-filled bag of garbage. Zico the Cinderace is busy on the bag's left, kicking various used plastics and metals into the container with remarkable accuracy. At his trainer's trial by a sudden assailant, he'd turn to the side, displaying a smug expression, before continuing his endeavor. Some partner he is.

Kipping up from his sprawling position, Luke has a flabbergasted expression on his face. The empty soda can is only worth a few pokecents at most. Is that enough to assault someone over?

Well, perhaps. Luke doesn't know about the dinner malarky, but that was not enough of a justification either.

"Oh, come on. Really?" Luke picks up his garbage bag, seemingly coincidentally catching an empty plastic container from Zico's kick, before walking to another sandy beach expanse. He did everything but draw a veritable line in the sand.

"You better stay in your lane after this."
[break][break]
All for a few pokecents more, eh?

Run, run, running, the struggle of champions.

Luke's training regiment had taken him on a cross-country - sometimes literally - trek for a while now. Granted, he still has his obligations to the burgeoning league, but the match schedule has been - for lack of a better word - sparse.

The lack of money compared to the Unova League made the football a bit more familial here. Exposure is rare, and payment's hard to come. They - and their Pokemon - do it for the love of the game around here.
[break][break]
Luke wishes he could help more, but the movements' are grassroots around here. Grassroots origins require grassroots Pokemon. It's only the matter of how you bring them up.
[break][break]
Luke keeps up his cardio, though his pace settles to a more steady one. There are others nearby, and he still has spare Pokeballs around. Maybe he'll get lucky.

Granted, this is the other side of the Hoenn he usually frequented. All his visits to Lilycove before this had been brief sojourns, but give Luke some credit. He would have remembered a place this elaborate and fancy, even if he was only passing through.

He'd be usually content on magicking his dinner - fires have a lot of applications, grilling among them - but he's been running a bit late today, and his stomach has been quick to remind him that he has eaten nothing since morning. Training's only one part of being an athlete, and watching your diet's another big part.

Lucas opens the restaurant's door while admitting his blunder to himself before an almost-packed establishment greeting him with a chaotic aural and visual assault. A couple of filled tables were visible from the outside, which serves as another reminder not to judge a book by its cover.

All he wanted was to order takeout.
[break][break]
With the servers busy fulfilling orders, he suddenly finds himself in no man's land. The perils of visiting during rush hours, it seems. Should he pick a less busy place?

But the food looks so good.
[break][break]
After a few moments of looking around, he finally notices someone who doesn't look busy, coupled with a well-groomed, beautiful, white-fur Vulpix. However, what strikes his attention the most isn't the vulpine but rather the chef himself.

It's a brief bout of deja vu.
[break][break]
He greeted Luke even before he called out to him. Rather impressive considering the packed restaurant. Is this the so-called sharply-honed trading instinct?

"Ah, yeah, sorry. I want to order takeout, though-"

That was how Lucas found himself on someone else's Mudsdale, masterminding a workout routine that won't involve rampaging through several wild Pokemons. He wouldn't call it his forte - anything that doesn't necessitate him to throw hands would - but there's always a first time for everything.

With an improvised riding technique, Lucas avoids a passing-by lump of gears. It's a balancing act of exerting enough force on the reins to make the quadruped feel it and not yank it hard enough to mutiny him overboard. There's a lot of room for improvement.

A couple of miles of riding while avoiding the wildlife sounds like enough of a workout. Well, it has to be. For a first-timer devising a training plan, that should be enough.

In the middle of adrenaline's haze, Lucas could remember a detail from the poor stranger trying to trust him with something.

Shouldn't there be someone else with him right now?
