Emma tugs the shirt up and over her head as his hands slide up her sides. He'd find no bandages there unlike before. Instead, her smooth skin is on display in its entirety, her canvas littered in still-healing bruises and cuts. But where his fingers tread she does not flinch.

She craves the pain, craves the way her skin jumps beneath his touch, sensitive, receptive.

The woman's own fingers peel at his shirt, pulling it over his head. She pulls away from his lips from time to time, breath hot, laboured, uneven. Her skin is still littered with remnants of another passionate night, but those bruises have faded far quicker than the ones that blossom against her ribs.

"Is this really what you want?"

Her question is whispered against his lips and she pulls back from him, chest rising and falling, legs loose against his hips.

The woman in his lap, with her hands exploring every inch of him, is not the same woman he knew all those years ago. She had been cold, unwelcoming: a monster. Built for pain- both giving and receiving.

Once upon a time, she would have used this opportunity to put a knife in his back.

Rocket had created the beast, molded and manifested the darkest part of her. But the people she'd met had taught her how to love. They had shown her kindness, even when she'd bitten their hand, beaten them bloody.

And she craved that love and acceptance with every beat of her broken heart. Even if it meant reopening barely-healed wounds. Even if it meant sacrificing pieces of herself.

Beneath the piercing gaze and bared teeth there existed a human being.

Her eyes are closed but her mind is awake. Exhaustion weighs on her heavily, leaving her motionless and lost in her own head. Grief feels like a cold stone in her chest, unshakable. It brings her wave after wave of guilt, burned away only by the smell of cigarette smoke and the sun blinking through the blinds.[break][break]

King shifts next to her, pulling away the warmth. The sheets fall away from her to cling to him, but she is not the least bit concerned. [break][break]

Emma's body is riddled with bruises and fresh scratches. Her body aches with a familiar, dull throb, but it is one she does not regret. The woman exhales softly as she sits up to take his extended offer, the cigarette burns and she twists to avoid spilling ash in the bed, back exposed to the man in full.

Their kiss is almost painfully slow. It builds an ache in her chest that she realizes is guilt. But the desire to hold on to him and to experience his warmth trumps the feelings of negativity.

She wants to be selfish.

She wants to take.

And take, and take, and take.

He reaches a hand to hold her face; a hand that had once been used to break her now brushes against her with nothing but blatant affection. What had changed?

Spurred by his body drawing nearer, she moves to straddle him, lowering herself slowly onto his lap. Everything is delicate, careful, slow so they might not break.

Don't get attached, she had said. Funny, because that is all she ever seemed to do. People called her a lone wolf. She vowed to be alone- and yet time after time she's found herself letting people in.

Loneliness and the desire to be seen seemed to outweigh every instinct she had for self-preservation.

She didn't owe anyone anything.

She didn't belong to anyone but herself.

She could indulge, take what she wanted, be selfish.

Theo leans in, matching his breath to hers. His lips are warm, his kiss soft compared to the passion and the heat she was used to. There was no fire behind it, no threat, no desperate lunge for control.

He kissed her not to compete, and she realizes she doesn't know how to describe it.

Whatever it is, however, she is receptive to it. Slowly, the woman leans into him further, shifting her weight to reach him easier.

His muted, straw-coloured eyes return, offering her an unsettling sense of relief. The longer he lingers, the more she realizes she meant what she said. Her attempt at humor was a poorly written disguise.

She wanted him to hate her, just like she wanted the world to. Just like she wanted to hate him.

Hearing him say it made her chest strike like a gong. She shouldn't be surprised- and frankly she isn't.

She caught him watching her often, felt his gaze linger, his smile soften. The gifts, the wine, the walk home. The kiss to her cheek, the whispered farewell.

The fact that he had dropped everything to accompany her to Sootopolis even though it was clear he didn't like the city.

Perhaps she had been the fool, ignoring the signs, pushing away the blatant truth. Theo had been nothing but crystal clear for a while now, he just hadn't spoken out loud. For a woman of action, she was now so numb.

"That is in very poor taste, I think."

And then she starts to laugh, though the sound is far from anything happy.

Ariados scuttles backward as the toxic splashes back. It doesn't land on her, thankfully, but she glances from it to the Aurorus behind the shimmering, nearly invisible shield.[break][break]

There is a moment of hesitation as the ground rumbles beneath them. Emma tilts her chin, listening, and her spider jumps to avoid one of the thrown rocks. But several more follow right behind the first, and the Ariados is forced to protect herself with CROSS POISON, smashing the rocks as they come.[break][break]

Several glance off of her body, however, and she seems to pant. Could spiders pant?

She strokes the back of her thumb with the other, agitated. There is a lump in her throat so large it's difficult to breathe. More tears linger at the corners of her eyes, prepared to spill the still-damp paths against her cheek.
