The more the councilman spoke, the more the ambassador understood the other man for what he was: a self-professed martyr painting a picture of his—and his family's—unending and thankless sacrifices for the sake of Hoenn. A picture shared with such conviction that many would believe it.[break][break]

But Julien had not moved to a foreign country to sacrifice himself for its protection. He was there for Kalos, and Kalos alone.[break][break]

And frankly, he did not give a shit if all the Silphs died off, one by one.[break][break]

"My condolences," he said instead, his tone and stare possessing only the barest sympathy.[break][break]

A space-time distortion. Julien had heard of this phenomenon, but also that their frequency had decreased significantly since the meteoroid incident. The fact that they still occurred at all seemed bewildering.[break][break]

When news of a distortion at Slateport City's abandoned industrial district reached him, he made the immediate decision to investigate it.[break][break]

Julien arrived knowing what to expect, even though it was his first distortion. His Nidorino made quick work of the hostile Pokémon materializing within the aberrant zone, even evolving into a Nidoking during one particularly vicious encounter.[break][break]

When all fell silent and the distortion seemed to be reaching its end, Julien made to leave. A curious object on the ground caught his eye, however: a small, yellow shard. He almost disregarded it, but something about its uniqueness compelled him to pick it up.[break][break]

Perhaps he'd ask some new contacts about it later.

Maxentius uttered a soft knicker in warning as a Magneton floated into the hallway he and Julien were traversing. The Magnet Pokémon noticed them at once, its three eyes honing in on the man first, then the horse next to him.[break][break]

And unlike the small, frightened Shinx from before, it did not seem eager to leave.[break][break]

Julien whistled sharply, a wordless command to his Mudsdale. Maxentius reared back. When his heavy front hooves slammed into the floor, BULLDOZE struck the Magneton, sending it reeling.[break][break]

Then Julien threw a Pokéball to capture it.

Julien nodded slowly, understanding. He did wonder if Fernando merely meant non-native Pokémon brought to Hoenn, the immigrants themselves who came voluntarily or not, or particular families who seemed drawn to the region. The Calcifets, for instance.[break][break]

All three seemed equally plausible.[break][break]

"Your family has done well since moving to Hoenn, hasn't it?" Julien dared to remark. "You have a longstanding council seat, your brother is a member of the Elite Four… I hear your sister has come here recently, too."[break][break]

Delilah Silph was famous enough in Kalos that the ambassador knew her by name, if not personally.[break][break]

Julien allowed himself a thin smile. "Some might say one region's loss is Hoenn's gain."

Julien nodded when Delilah mentioned the meteoroid—it had been all over the news, in Kalos and other regions. But the information about Kyurem was new. Even the articles published in local Hoennian newspapers had not mentioned a massive Pokémon as the cause of the Silent Icelands.[break][break]

As much as he wanted to embrace Delilah's forthcoming nature, he could not deny the suspicion this revelation sparked in him. What was her motivation? What did she stand to gain, sharing this with him when the general public did not know?[break][break]

"I see."[break][break]

Julien turned his gaze back to the desolate landscape that spread out in front of them. He matched its silence as he considered how to answer her.[break][break]

"If a Legendary Pokémon caused this, then only a Legendary Pokémon can reverse it, I would think. Human technology is advanced in a lot of ways, but this is a supernatural phenomenon."[break][break]

The obvious question was left unspoken: whether the League possessed a Legendary Pokémon who could undo this catastrophe. After all, if they did, surely they would have reversed it already.

"Try to focus on work during work hours, hmm?" he said, tone still light to counter the reprimand. Ultimately, Mari had made a small infraction. Nothing to get angry about. "We don't pay you to play on your phone."[break][break]

He swiveled his chair back toward his laptop, intent on getting back to his work. It was signal enough for his assistant to return to her own desk and resume her duties.[break][break]

But then he paused, his fingers poised over his keyboard.[break][break]

Julien regarded the girl closely. "Mari, if you like, you can accompany me to dinner tonight. I know you've been working late hours recently, and I want to express my gratitude. It will be my treat."

Long hallways, silent conference rooms, and empty bull pens greeted Julien and Maxentius as they traversed the first few floors of the power plant. The man paused frequently, rifling through papers, attempting to log into computers. But he found nothing of significance.[break][break]

A clattering noise from around the corner drew Julien's attention. When he rounded it, he spotted a small, startled Shinx. Nearby, a potted plant had toppled over, scattering black dirt everywhere.[break][break]

The Shinx fled as soon as he spotted the man and the enormous horse. Shaking his head with amusement, Julien wondered who exactly kept the building clean and tidy. It seemed to him like nothing more than a ghost town.

New Mauville. Ever since his dinner with Elisabeth Fiorelli, Julien had made it a personal goal to visit the power plant and assess it for procurement. It could, potentially, be very useful for his family's expansion of their company, Gigavolt Energies, into Hoenn.[break][break]

While he was there, he figured he might also look for hints of the Legendary Pokémon known as Zapdos. According to the Rocket underboss, it dwelled somewhere in the power plant.[break][break]

At his side was his Mudsdale, a recent acquisition and the latest addition to his collection of stud horses. Though Julien often used them as mounts for riding, in the building's narrow halls, he opted to walk beside the horse instead.[break][break]

Besides, he did not know what dangers they'd encounter. Maxentius needed to be able to move freely, without worrying about a rider on his back.[break][break]

"Let's see what we can find, shall we?" Julien murmured to the Mudsdale, patting his thick neck as they trod through the barren halls together.

Mega evolution was one of the phenomena unique to Hoenn, whispered as rare rumors in other regions. But compared to other incidents such as the meteoroid and its sudden vanishing, aliens invading, and rifts opening up to other worlds, mega evolution seemed minor in comparison.[break][break]

Julien was wrong, of course. Witnessing it firsthand, he stared in awe at the powerful display of Nomi's Ampharos. Even his physical features changed.[break][break]

"Incredible," he breathed, his hair still standing on end thanks to the lingering electricity. "You'll have to explain how that works to me."[break][break]

While they attempted to spend the night, of course.[break][break]

As the aftereffects of the electric attack faded away, Julien began the search for objects to use as makeshift beds. They had brought canned food and an electric grill for cooking their meals, but nothing to use for sleep.[break][break]

It was a city, after all. Surely there were blankets around.[break][break]

Inside the building, Julien shoved the desk in front of the door, hoping it would hold against a horde of undead. Then he followed Nomi through the main chamber they had entered, staring with wonder at how similar it looked to a regular library despite maintaining a semblance of alienness.[break][break]

While she released an Unown to search for danger, Julien and his Delphox moved to a different part of the room. Several doors were open or destroyed; beyond their frames lay only darkness.[break][break]

"Alethius, attack anything hostile," Julien reminded his Pokémon as he took out his phone and turned on its flashlight.[break][break]

Stepping into one such side chamber, Julien pointed the light at the broken furniture scattered over the floor. For a moment, all was still.[break][break]

Then something lunged at him from the shadows. Instinctively, he yelped and scrambled back through the door. Alethius stepped forward to defend him, attacking the creature — another undead! — with PSYCHIC. The sharp-fanged Megalopolan staggered but was not deterred.[break][break]

"Miss Sato! There's one over here!" Julien shouted as he regained his composure.
