"A few times," Julien replied smoothly before taking another sip of his wine. "It's the one restaurant I've found that most reminds me of home. Of course, nothing compares to the restaurants in Snowbelle."[break][break]

Then he set down the glass and folded his hands in his lap, regarding Mari with keen interest. Though he knew her family's reputation and a little about her from her résumé, she was still very much a stranger to him.[break][break]

"What's your hometown like? Is there anything about it that you miss?" he asked, choosing a topic that might prove easier for her to discuss.

"Julien," the ambassador replied, uninterested in whatever situation might ensue if the woman knew he was not only rich, but a politician. Especially as she admitted to rigging bets in her youth.[break][break]

Her tone and the look in her eye suggested growing older had not stopped her from committing crimes—the same or otherwise. Julien merely smiled at her before turning his attention to the approaching bookie.[break][break]

"I'll bet on the Azurill as well," he said, removing a crisp 100 PD bill from his wallet. The amount meant nothing to him, but there was no point exercising his real wealth on a meaningless game like this one.[break][break]

After the bookie left, Julien turned back to his conversation partner. "So what does a by-the-book woman like you do when you're not betting on baby Pokémon, Marguerite?" he asked, a hint of dry humor coming out in his tone.

Julien's gaze slid to the Bonsly at the woman's mention and silently agreed. Rock-type Pokémon tended not to be quick on their feet.[break][break]

He raised an eyebrow at his unexpected companion for the spectacle. "Occasionally, when the mood strikes," he replied.[break][break]

He was not as much of a gambler as his other peers, preferring to avoid risk when it came to his money. That didn't mean he couldn't participate in a little indulgence here and there, however. Perhaps he could purchase a plush toy of the winner for Mari with the winnings.[break][break]

"I'm guessing you are, Miss…?" Julien ventured, seeking the dark-haired woman's name.

Before long, Drusilla noticed that her trainer had arrived to pick her up. She waddled over to her new Onix friend to say farewell.[break][break]

"Thanks for all your help today!" she said. "I'm sorry we have to part so soon, but maybe we'll see each other again. But maybe you won't recognize me? I'm going to evolve and become big and strong for my trainer."[break][break]

Taking one last berry for the road, she started off toward the entrance of the daycare. But before she had gone more than a few yards, she turned back around and hopped from one foot to the other.[break][break]

"Goodbye! Take care!"[break][break]

And then she was gone, rushing back to her trainer's side and disappearing into a Pokéball.

An accomplice! Of course![break][break]

Drusilla rushed away as the Onix began to move. She whispered her plan to a bunch of other small Pokémon—ones with arms and hands—and they all hurried off as the SANDSTORM began kicking up.[break][break]

They took the long way around to the berry field, slipping in between the rows just as things started to get chaotic. With great speed, they shook the trees until the berries fell to the ground. Once they'd collected enough, they each grabbed as many as they could hold and dashed away again.[break][break]

Drusilla, who could not carry anything, ventured into the whirling cyclone of sand and dust to report that they were successful. Onix could stop causing such a mess now![break][break]

"Come with me!" she said. "I've saved some berries for us."

"Well," Drusilla began, "maybe you could distract it somehow? And then I could sneak in and grab berries! For you and me both, of course."[break][break]

It was a foolproof plan, in her mind. An Onix was a lot larger than a Grotle and could easily keep the Grass-type occupied while the smaller Roggenrola could sneak past.[break][break]

"Though… I'm not sure how I'm going to collect all those berries by myself. I don't have arms or hands." Sure, she could smash her head into the berry trees, but then they'd just be rolling all over the ground.[break][break]

Drusilla looked up at the Onix again. "Do you have any ideas, mister?"

The rumbling of the ground and the deep voice that interrupted her shocked Drusilla out of her plotting. She jumped and listened keenly, recognizing the vibrations as that of an Onix.[break][break]

"Sorry to wake you!" she exclaimed, hopping from foot to foot. "It's just, I want to get some berries from the berry field at the edge of the daycare, but there is a big Grotle guarding it."[break][break]

She stopped hopping and tilted her body in an obvious gesture of curiosity as a thought occurred to her.[break][break]

"Say, do you want berries, mister?"

Oh boy! The daycare! Drusilla took in her surroundings with her single ear, sorting through the cacophony of sounds. Several other Pokémon were visiting that day, it seemed.[break][break]

Some were chattering about their trainers, or about the naps they wished to take beneath the trees. Others talked with excitement about the poffins that the old couple who ran the place baked every afternoon for their wards.[break][break]

But the most exciting bit of information the Roggenrola overheard was this: that in a far corner of the daycare was the old couple's berry patch, fiercely guarded by their Grotle. The last of the berries were ripe, but no one was allowed to eat them![break][break]

Perhaps a little Roggenrola like herself could? But how could she get past a vigilant Grass-type? Drusilla pondered this as she paced back and forth in front of a large pile of stones, murmuring possible plans to herself.[break][break]

"I could bring a poffin to appease him, maybe? Oh, but they're not done yet, and I'm hungry now! Maybe I summon a SANDSTORM? No, no, too obvious…"

The event was preposterous, but Julien understood the kind of money that could be made off something as silly as a baby Pokémon race. People tended to show more interest in situations that involved cute creatures compared to ones that didn't.[break][break]

And when it came to something as boring as racing, he supposed cute Pokémon made it better.[break][break]

He wasn't there for himself, of course. marilee beaufort had mentioned it the other day as a passing comment, when she was going over his schedule for his business trip to Mauville. And while the race was a little out of the way, he had plenty of time after his meeting to look around.[break][break]

Why not take some photos of the racers and send them to her?[break][break]

"No, it does not. It's been fed too much and will be slow," Julien said in response to the woman next to him. His own voice was low and bordered on disinterest.[break][break]

Still, he raised his phone to take a photo of the Pokémon at the starting line. The soft click from the camera app was barely audible over the raucous cheering that surrounded them.[break][break]

Julien lowered his phone and regarded the spectacle. At his side, his Houndour sat back on her haunches, alert for any sign of trouble. "The Azurill, on the other hand, looks healthy."

Julien flinched from the Banette's attack. Thankfully, his Magneton erected a REFLECT shield in time, saving him from injury or even death. He was prepared to give his Pokémon more orders, but then the club's owner burst into the storage room.[break][break]

Flabbergasted, Julien watched in silence as the man poured out a flask of dark liquid—that smelled suspiciously of blood—straight onto the floor.[break][break]

Julien cleared his throat. "Excuse me, but what is going on?" he demanded.[break][break]

The older gentleman wiped his brow with a handkerchief and glanced around with an apologetic look on his face.[break][break]

"I wish you had not had to witness that," he said, his tone touched with the hint of a Galarian accent. "Please, do not spread word of this to the others."[break][break]

"Word of what, exactly?" Julien asked, brow furrowed with growing exasperation.[break][break]

"The salle is haunted, and this Banette here was the beloved Pokémon of the man who was murdered here. She's still very protective of him."[break][break]

Julien stared at the other man for a long moment, then pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed.

Julien frowned in consternation at the two staff members. He understood the fragile condition of the older woman, but thought the younger man should have a stronger constitution than that.[break][break]

He supposed that was the difference between men of the elite and the common masses.[break][break]

"If it's a ghost, then it should be easy enough to subdue," Julien said, walking toward the door. It creaked ominously as he pushed it open.[break][break]

The room within was pitch black, just like the rest of the salle. Thankfully, Julien's Magneton cast sufficient light to see by. He walked into the center of the room, which appeared to be used for storage, as many shelves and boxes filled the space.[break][break]

Suddenly, the man had the distinct sense of being watched. He whirled around, just in time to see a Banette charge at him with SHADOW SNEAK.

Julien sipped his water, stalling for a moment as he considered Elise's question. Then, setting down his glass, he launched into a thoughtful but concise answer. The back-and-forth volley of questions and answers continued over their meal, until the princess seemed satisfied.[break][break]

On his end, Julien endured the conversation well. It allowed him greater insight into the personality, strengths, and weaknesses of his political peer. He mentally filed away this information, for later scrutiny.[break][break]

All-in-all, however, he doubted he had to worry about trouble from the likes of Elise Calcifet.[break][break]

He paid for their meal, of course. Not that she couldn't afford it, but because it was the gentlemanly thing to do, especially since he was her elder. Then he thanked her for the company and bid her farewell.[break][break]

And he silently vowed, in the future, to communicate primarily through written correspondence.

Julien had placed his mask and bib on the bench and had already begun removing his jacket when the lights went out. A hushed murmur swept through the other club members, the same question on everyone's lips.[break][break]

"I believe it's storage, yes," he said to Aurelie, who was nearest to him at the time. Though he could hardly see anything in the gloom, he still tried to scan the salle for anything amiss.[break][break]

"Who is closest to the light switches? Do they work?"[break][break]

A moment later, someone in the darkness confirmed they weren't working at all.[break][break]

Julien's mouth pressed into a thin line, and his brow furrowed in consternation. How strange that the staff hadn't stepped in to reassure everyone and direct them all outside. Perhaps they had been the source of the screams?[break][break]

Carefully, he put down his jacket next to his things and retrieved his belt of Pokéballs from his duffel bag. Snapping it around his hips, he said, "I'm going to see what that was about."[break][break]

As he walked off toward the stairwell, he released his Magneton. Sparks coruscated along its magnet ends, illuminating the way.
