A smile spread across Julien's face at the recognition. "Enchanté, Aurelie. I did not expect to meet old fans of mine here in Hoenn."[break][break]

He saluted her with his épée in kind, then adopted the same stance. At her "Allez!", they began their dance. And though it was only a friendly spar, Julien's movements showcased the decade of hard work and consistent practice he had committed to mastering fencing.[break][break]

His footwork was swift and precise. His sword lanced through the air as if it were an extension of his arm, so economical was his movement of it. A clean riposte followed each parry. And throughout it all, he remained calm and composed, patient and observant.[break][break]

Three minutes later, the duel ended with Julien as the victor. He removed his mask and extended his hand to shake Aurelie's, the customary way to end a bout. "Good spar. You fought well."[break][break]

For someone at her level, of course.

Despite not actively competing in the épée for over ten years, Julien still devoted hours every week to practice. As with hunting and horseback riding, fencing was not merely a hobby; it was a passion, one that honed mind as well as body.[break][break]

And so, three times a week, he made his way to his favorite fencing club in Slateport City. Fencers of all ages and skill levels met, socialized, and perfected their movements. Nights began with drills and ended with friendly spars.[break][break]

Julien took a big gulp from his water bottle before that night's spars began. Eyes of pale gold sought his partner for the night, a red-haired woman with an eyepatch. He wondered, briefly, how her disability affected her performance.[break][break]

Setting down his water bottle and tucking his mask under an arm, Julien approached her. "Good evening," he said, his greeting polite and aloof in equal measure. "My name is Julien. You are…?"

Fine, in summer and in casual settings.

There are many, but perhaps being chosen as the ambassador to Galar. It has been the highest achievement of my political career thus far.

Everyone deserves a second chance. Third chances, however, are much harder to come by.

7. Do you have a sibling, or someone like one? If so, what's your relationship like?
Yes. My older brother and I are not close, but neither are we antagonistic toward each other.

8. How would you like to be remembered after you die?
As a champion.

9. Do you name your Pokemon? Why, or why not? Do you follow a certain theme?
I do. I have a passing interest in ancient cultures and name my Pokemon following the naming scheme of one particularly warlike society.

Julien raised an eyebrow at Kaelyn's mention of her return to dance. "Is that right? I'm surprised. I thought you had all but forsaken it." He smiled. "I'm glad to hear you haven't."[break][break]

While he was not a man who understood the joy of performance, he did know the exhilaration of success, of victory. Whether hunting down prey in the woods, beating an opponent on the piste, or outsmarting a political rival, Julien loved the high of conquest.[break][break]

At Kaelyn's own question, he gave a dismissive shrug of his shoulder. "Would you believe me if I said I attended a carnival at the end of summer? It was a good PR opportunity, and I rode the bumper cars for the first time."[break][break]

He chuckled at the memory.[break][break]

Kaelyn's hotel waited for them in all its stately splendor. Julien drove his car right up to the main entrance and parked. A bellhop and his partner MACHOKE automatically moved to the trunk to assist with luggage.[break][break]

"Here ends our lovely conversation," Julien said. "It was good to see you again, Kaelyn. Send a text if you'd like to come to dinner."

Julien matched the smile Kaelyn flashed in his direction. He was not privy to the kind of work she did for Team Rocket, but he imagined she would not run out of opportunities for it in Hoenn.[break][break]

"Has life been that boring without me around?" he teased her. "What have you been up to since we last met?"[break][break]

Once more, the car stopped at a red light. They were not far from the hotel at that point, only a few more blocks away. Around them, various cafés and restaurants lined the boulevard; Julien spotted a sign out of the corner of his eye selling fresh SLOWPOKE TAILS.

The snowy landscape melted away, receding with great speed to reveal the long, rectangular piste of a fencing arena. No longer did Julien wear the thick, wool clothing of his wintry hunt; no longer did he sit astride his Rapidash and wield a rifle.[break][break]

Instead, he was dressed in a white fencing uniform, a mask tucked under one arm, an épée in his other hand. The metal hilt sat in his palm as if he had been born to hold it.[break][break]

Only then did Julien notice that the seats around the piste were packed with people; the aura of the chamber was so tense with excitement and anticipation that he could slice through it with his sword.[break][break]

At the other end of the platform, his opponent waited, already masked up. In the corner of his eye, Julien spotted his old university coach, speaking with one of the referees.[break][break]

Understanding dawned on him. This was the third and final match of the championship title competition.[break][break]

Julien put on his mask and secured it. The referee turned, nodded at both duelists, and waited until both assumed their stances on each end of the piste.[break][break]

"En garde!"[break][break]

Julien started forward. Épée demanded patience, observation, and swiftness of motion. Just like the hunt. And on this battlefield, he excelled, finding narrow opportunities to strike. The épée made contact again, and again, and again.[break][break]

Time passed in the blink of an eye. The referee called an end to the match—and to the contest. In bright, bold letters, the scoreboard declared Julien the irrefutable winner. He tilted his head back, basking in the deep satisfaction and joy of victory, the audience's cheers thundering around him.

Julien nodded, keeping his eyes on the road as drove them into the upper district. The city transformed before their very eyes, the mundanity of the lower district giving way to money and glamor.[break][break]

"I've been to the place called Lesser Megalopolis, which is a section of Ultra Space once ruled by an alien species called the Megalopolans. And I've visited the Silent Icelands, which were once verdant fields. The otherworldly dragon called Kyurem brought it to Hoenn."[break][break]

Unfortunately, being the Kalosian ambassador meant he hadn't been able to dedicate as much time to those excursions. He was still looking to make another trip into Lesser Megalopolis, and visit the other Ultra Wilds realms, too.[break][break]

Julien went on to summarize other phenomena, including MEGA EVOLUTION and Terastallization. Kaelyn would learn of them in detail in due time.[break][break]

"Have you already made contact with Rocket's leadership here?" he asked afterward. He assumed, of course, that she knew who those leaders were. To do any less was to insult her intelligence and resourcefulness.

Julien inclined his head, accepting Freya's calculated response. The proper channels were already active, with discussions circulating about the sort of aid—if any—Kalos would provide Hoenn.[break][break]

But bureaucracy took time, and Kalos was as tightfisted as Hoenn was reluctant to accept outside help. The League Council in Ever Grande City would rather imbibe a vial of GASTRO ACID than allow a foreigner into their meetings.[break][break]

Julien peered into the bags of candy they had brought out for the night's event. "I believe that's all the candy. Thank you for your companionship and assistance, Councilwoman."[break][break]

When he smiled, the expression possessed a tightness that had been absent before.

Julien chuckled. Stopped at a red light, he entered the address for Kaelyn's hotel, located in the upper district.[break][break]

"You will be happy to know, then, that this region sees no rest when it comes to interesting happenings. Between the Ultra Wilds rifts, a mysterious snowscape, and new islands emerging from the sea, you'll stay entertained."[break][break]

The light turned green, and he drove on.[break][break]

At her teasing, Julien broke out into a rich, deep laugh. Kaelyn had always been one of his favorite diversions, even though it had been a while since they'd seen each other. He flashed her a quick, fond smile.[break][break]

"Hoenn is certainly interesting. The people are proud and difficult, and not everyone likes foreigners. The League Council is especially stubborn, and their Rangers and policing force are fairly competent, so be careful."[break][break]

He did not know Kaelyn's mission in Hoenn, but she was sure to clash with the League sooner or later.[break][break]

"The Team Rocket branch here is a well-oiled machine, and they have powerful leadership. Unfortunately, they also have a small but ongoing issue with disloyalty in the lower ranks. Defection is a regular enough occurrence that there's an open call to kill any and all traitors."

"For starters, the monsieur and mademoiselle will have a foie gras, smoked eel, and black truffle salad, with a vinaigrette of hazelnut, berries, and champagne vinegar.[break][break]

"For the entrée, you have a choice of either seafood or beef. Our seafood is fresh from the market's daily catch while our beef is cut from the highest grade cows raised on our farms in Verdanturf.[break][break]

"Dessert is a cheese platter and sesame ice cream with spiced raspberries, served with a sauce of lime, perilla, and candied yuzu.[break][break]

"Does the mademoiselle have a preference for seafood or beef for her main course?"[break][break]

Across the table, Julien's smile curved over the rim of his wine glass. His eyes like pale gold coins watched Mari without giving away any of his thoughts.[break][break]

After she gave her answer, the waiter turned to Julien. "I'll have the beef."[break][break]

And then they were alone.

"I'm fortunate enough to have the weekends off," Julien said, his smile widening with the joke. He shut the trunk of the car and returned to the driver's seat.[break][break]

Once Kaelyn took her seat beside him, he locked the doors and rolled her window back up. Within moments, they peeled away from the airport and headed into Slateport City. Skyscrapers loomed ahead, the promise of civilization.[break][break]

"My day has been fine so far. I enjoyed an hour at the local fencing club and made a reservation for dinner at Le Pavillon in Slateport, if you care to join me later." The casualness of his invitation spoke to many similar meals they had shared in the past.[break][break]

Julien pressed a few buttons on the dashboard to activate the GPS. "I was surprised to hear from you, you know. I had thought you invaluable to the Kalosian branch. What changed?" he asked.
