While Rhys couldn't claim that this was the most glamorous assignment he'd been given since joining with Rocket all those months ago, he couldn't say that it was the most difficult, either. Shift rotation at the giant eff-off tree smack in the middle of Sootopolis? Check. Keep pokemon from getting close to the tree? Check. Keep unauthorized personnel from approaching the tree? Checkity-check-check.

He hadn't been briefed on all of the nuances, but the diminutive pokemon he'd caught glimpses of near the tree's base seemed reason enough to keep from being disturbed. As it stood, the past several hours had been among the most boring of his entire month; being located in Sootopolis meant no one in their right mind would even think of trying anything, and he fought back a yawn as he surveyed the surroundings once more.

He blinked at the sight of the man in fatigues and his Toxicroak barreling toward him, far closer for his liking than if he'd caught it earlier. With a get-up like that, the other either meant serious business or had a screw loose.

Or both, Rhys reasoned.

Cursing under his breath, he released his Reuniclus, the green-jellied creature materializing next to him with a series of high-frequency tones. "Reflect," he murmured, and the pokemon obeyed, a shimmering field of light blinking into existence between them and the approaching assailants. Rhys tensed himself, narrowing his eyes as he surveyed the approaching man - he wouldn't strike first, that wasn't his style, but he had the distinct feeling that, with the intensity of the other's approach, it would come to blows whether he liked it or not.

Rhys and Althea's long, looping lap of the festivities now took them near the draconid shrine, and Rhys couldn't help but shield his eyes as a Salamance flew overhead on its way back to the structure. "Year of the dragon, indeed," he muttered, sharing a wry look with Althea. "Subtle enough, do you think?"

He paused at an open stretch of snow, and nudged Althea forward. "Do you want to build a snowboy?" he inquired innocently of Althea, who chirped excitedly and began rolling a small ball of snow together. "Wait," Rhys called, moving to assist her, "You're starting with the top first!"

Rhys relaxed as Marianne's Klefki led the being away from their intended path, releasing a sigh he hadn't realized he'd been holding.

"I couldn't say, not without getting a closer look," he responded, brow furrowed as he stared in the direction of the exited Megalopolan. "Something is definitely wrong with it, though, you're right."

As though to underscore the statement, Althea shrieked in alarm, a pink-tinted MISTY TERRAIN rolling out under the group's feet reflexively before a searing pain tore through Rhys's left bicep. Another Megalopolan had snuck behind him while his focus was drawn and he now had a jagged claw wound to show for his carelessness.

He cursed under his breath, tearing away from the creature but doing his level best to keep his body between the assailant and Marianne. "Get it away, Althea!" he bit out, cradling his wounded arm and rifling through the pouch at his hip until he came out with a length of white bandage.

The Audino unleashed a HYPER VOICE that sent the Megalopolan bodily backward, crashing tumultuously into the ruins of a nearby storefront. Rhys used his teeth to cinch the bandage around his wounded arm, then grabbed Marianne's wrist with his good hand and began sprinting toward the schoolhouse just ahead.

"We've got to get in and hope there's nothing in there with us," he panted between steps. Behind them, Althea kept pace, the MISTY TERRAIN rolling with them as they made their advance. "There's some kind of necrosis on this wound and I have to treat it properly before Althea runs out of steam - she's the only thing keeping it from spreading, I think."

Following Marianne's gaze, Rhys nodded agreeably as he caught sight of the same structure she'd noticed, even if the words were made heavier, more cloying, by the oppressive wrongness of the city around them. "That might do," he allowed, falling into step just behind her as they began their approach, Althea tagging along at the rear of their little expedition.

A strange environment, to be sure, but Rhys couldn't help the frisson of excitement running down his spine. Who knew what they might find?

He would have an answer to that particular query sooner than he'd have thought.

Drawing closer to the ruined schoolhouse, Rhys suddenly slid forward, extending an arm in front of Marianne to halt her movement, a single finger going to his lips in a silent plea for silence. Catching her eye, he inclined his head to one side of the thoroughfare, indicating a shambling, humanoid shape emerging from one of the ruined entryways.

He tensed minutely, observing the Megalopolan as it lurched sideways against a fallen slough of rubble. Had it seen them? Would it notice them if they continued? He couldn't be sure, but...did he want to chance it?

Rhys wouldn't count himself the most adventurous person on the planet - or even in the same room, on a given day - but the notion of entirely other dimensions, rife with the unknown and sheer possibility, had him all but frothing at the mouth to experience firsthand. Eager to prove himself, eager to expand his horizons, he'd managed to not only secure passage through one of the rifts, but arranged for a traveling companion as well. Two heads are better than one, and even he was not foolish enough to charge headfirst into the unknown by himself.

As he alighted on a ruined street, Althea the Audino at his side, he couldn't keep his jaw from dropping momentarily. The sheer scale of the glistening obsidian structures rising around him was baffling, and he stopped in his tracks purely to survey the landscape.

Turning, he beckoned Althea closer to him, the pair waiting for their remaining companion to catch up.

Rhys's idle wandering through the crowd was abruptly arrested by a snowball smacking directly against his face, driving him back a step and causing Althea to trill nervously. Sputtering, he tugs at the end of the olive-green scarf wrapped around his neck, bringing it up to scrub his face off inelegantly.

Stretching upward in an attempt to get a better view, he peers in the direction the offending missile originated from and only manages to catch the back of Yumi Hasegawa's head before she's moved on. Tch, he mentally scoffs, too many people here to throw things indiscriminately.

His attention is briefly drawn to the stage as the performance kicks up, and although the music isn't necessarily to his taste, he can appreciate the colorful display of the Altarias' DRAGON DANCE, allowing himself a wry smile. Althea, by contrast, jumps up and down excitedly, and Rhys favors her with a pat on the head. "Not bad after all, eh, girl?

"Thank you, sir," Rhys nodded at the dismissal, coming to his feet. "I'm grateful for the insight, and I look forward to showing you my improvements if I'm assigned to you again in the future."

He exited the meeting room with little preamble, and more than a little effort to not turn his head searching for Smoke the Gengar on his way out. Altogether that hadn't gone nearly as poorly as it could have, and while Zev hadn't been entirely more conversant than the table they'd sat at, Rhys couldn't help but appreciate the other man's insight and advice. He knew where he needed to improve, and he had some idea of where to start going about it.

What then, though? He'd joined Rocket in a black haze of fury and resentment, and his every waking moment over the past months was underscored by swings of palpable emotion - anxiety, impatience, frustration, smug satisfaction - but he felt distinctly unfocused. Stick it to the medical system for killing her, he'd thought, and if anyone had a way to destabilize the status quo, it would be Rocket, but was that even on their radar?

He shook his head as he turned down the hallway, running a hand through his hair distractedly. Probably not, not for one kid's grudge, but if he could climb - if he could direct a stir in the course of more wide-encompassing acts on the part of the Team - well, that might do it.

The seeming ambivalence of the other man in response to his exposition didn't irk Rhys as it might have in other situations; rather, it gave him a sense of satisfaction. Keep it honest, but not personal. Don't make waves or sound like you've got delusions of grandeur until you're better positioned to actually back them up and focus on HOW to get them done. Grunts like you are a dime a dozen, don't forget.

Part of Rhys wanted to laugh at the near-absurdity of Zev's next inquiry. What idiot wouldn't have questions at this juncture?

Another more level-headed part, however, recognized the opportunity he'd been given - conversation without fear of reprisal. Well, no more fear than he'd been lowly experiencing since walking into the room after Zev.

"What next?" he asked simply. "I know what I need to work on, myself, but there's going to be more work. Am I supposed to wait for the next mission, like we just finished, or am I better off keeping an ear open for opportunities?"

Rhys allowed himself a smile, this one not even forced. He'd been nervous for this meeting for days, and while he hadn't necessarily expected to be eviscerated - verbally or otherwise - by the woman, he found himself exceptionally gratified that she thought him on the right track with his first inept attempt at...extracurriculars.

Relief, Rhys supposed, was not intended to feel like having a tub of ice water upended directly over his head. Possibly it was the anxiety he felt at the situation uncoiling itself as the Rocket Beast gave his feedback, but Rhys couldn't hide the slight relaxing of his shoulders, the marginal lack of tension in his posture as the conversation continued.

Opportunities wouldn't be getting discussed if Rhys was intended to be Sharpedo bait due to his inexperience. Probably.

Rhys nodded in response to Zev's inquiry - yes, he was a pharmacist, and in fact had a staggering amount each of knowledge, resentment, and debt circulating around that notion. "I am, yeah. I mean yes," he corrects. "Not that compounding's going to pave my way, necessarily, but I did enough moonlighting with my mates that I can also deal with medical situations. Maybe not heart surgery, but better than a bandage."

His goals? Did he even have any that he could pose to the other man and not sound at best naive, or at worst idiotic?

Probably not, but stewing in anger for years over one particular incident could do a number on perception.

"This is gonna sound like a line, but I want to get stronger and be an asset to the organization," he pronounced at length. "Not gonna bore you with it, but I didn't come this far just because I'm some kinda bad boy. I believe in the mission and I want to support the Team's Hoenn activities. Some in particular more than others, maybe, but sitting around filling antibiotics for sniffly brats ain't gonna get anything done for me."

He offered a slight shrug, as though underscoring the simplicity of his message. "I have some skills, and what I don't have yet, I learn fast. I'm invested in the group's success, and I can't help be a part of that if I'm too busy falling on my face and getting bullied by a half-grown ghost."
