Victor made a mental note to check out the shop Josh mentioned in Verdanturf as he gave a squeeze of the Stantler's sides. Jaakko snorted, and began to walk forward a few slow, ambling steps, following Josh and Din as they made their way onto the track. It was a little touch and go, both rider and Pokemon feeling each other out as Victor urged Jaakko to pick up the pace. Steer a little too hard in one direction, and the Stantler would over-correct and turn almost a full 90 degrees. Squeeze the sides a little too hard, and Jaakko would start to bound at a pace that was entirely uncomfortable for the trainer riding bareback. Riding Josh's Pokemon was leisurely compared to this; Victor hadn't realized how much effort it required to pilot a Pokemon who wasn't used to it. [break][break]

He also hadn't realized that Josh had fallen behind until Victor was finally able to keep Jaakko trotting at a comfortable pace without too much direct oversight, [break][break]

“So, uh, how are we doing?” Victor asked somewhat sheepishly. The Stantler's ears swiveled backwards, listening intently.

It wasn't long before Victor was visited by his first ghost of the Yuletide evening. Walking down a dark side path, incense smoldering like freshly extinguished candles, he saw the wavering shape of a Cursola's outstretched branches from the pond of a nearby estate. He peered at the Pokemon through the bars of the wrought iron gate. The Pokemon stared back with unblinking eyes. Victor pulled his thin jacket a little closer to his body and picked up his pace. Nope, that Pokemon was most certainly not on the list, no matter how hard it's pitiful gaze tried to convince him otherwise.

Victor was happy to see a familiar face among the crowd of other students and instructors. He nodded in acknowledgment as Josh greeted him, and smiled as he watched the Gym leader present an offering to his similarly disgruntled deer. He paused a bit at the mention of a 'well-crafted saddle'; Victor had only managed to get a bridle and reins by which to steer Jaakko in the short time between now and his last encounter with Josh. He nearly shuddered when he recalled just how expensive the prices were of the saddles he saw online. They would have to make do without one for now; besides, the collective voice of the Internet proclaimed that there were a variety of benefits to riding a Pokemon bareback, [break][break]

“None at all,” Victor admitted in response to the Gym Leader's inquiry, “And this is gonna be Jaakko's first rodeo, too.” [break][break]

He felt a huff of agitation from the Stantler next to him. Victor gave him an affectionate pat on the nose; Jaakko was going to have to get used to his terrible sense of humor. At the mention of the diagnostic, Victor nodded. This was something he was more or less prepared for. He stepped aside for a moment to slide over a mounting block provided by one of the staff members. Jaakko watched out of the corner of his eye with apparent disinterest as Victor stepped up and ran his hand over the Pokemon's side, [break][break]

“Alright, easy boy,” he muttered soothingly. [break][break]

Now was the moment of truth; he'd spent countless hours watching videos and scouring Internet searches in preparation for this. Stepping up the mounting block, he took a deep breath and swung one leg over Jaakko, using the momentum to slide himself onto the Stantler's back. Victor felt his legs involuntarily squeeze; he'd applied a little too much force in his mounting, and just barely caught himself before he could be sent tumbling over the Stantler's side. Jaakko responded with an anxious huff and a couple of shaky steps forward, but to the Pokemon's credit, he didn't buck or bolt. Victor gave the Pokemon an affection scrub on the withers, [break][break]

“Good boy! You're such a good boy,” Victor beamed as he happily rubbed the Stantler's short coat. That had gone much better than expected. He looked back at Josh, [break][break]“Alright, lead the way.”

Victor hadn't expected to find himself back in the upscale district of Mauville Hills so soon after his recent trek through the area with Josh Devlin . He blew on his hands to try and warm them, and looked up thoughtfully at the twinkling Yuletide decorations that shone like stars against a sky of upscale architecture. Victor was here to get a gift, and he was determined to make it a good one. He had no family to spend the holiday with this year; hell, it was probably the first year he'd be spending it entirely alone. But he was beginning to find that when such melancholy circumstances struck him, finding some way to take agency in even the most trivial of affairs was enough to keep his head on straight. That's why he'd signed up for the Secret Santa gift exchange in the first place. It was something to do when he couldn't do much else about his situation. And besides, there was an urge to provide and give during the holiday season that he'd have no means to exercise otherwise. [break][break]

He patted his pockets, making sure his new stock of jerky was exactly where he left it. It was, next to his crumpled pack of cigarettes. Next, he slung his messenger bag from his side to his front, rooting around and producing a small canister of incense. Victor looked around, trying to make sure that no one was nearby to see him ignite it's fuel. He was aware that he probably looked rather suspicious, but as the thin plumes of smoke began to waft out of the incense holder, he resolved that he wouldn't be leaving Mauville Hills until he got what he came here for.

It turned out that the riding classes were more affordable than Victor had anticipated. It hadn't been long after his meeting with Josh that he'd started looking around online, having been directed to the local gym's website by the leader himself. He also hadn't anticipated the sheer scale of the training facility that he was to meet Josh at. There were massive courts for battling, far larger than what Victor recalled having seen at other gyms or anywhere back home, and race tracks with all sorts of layouts, lengths, and obstacles. Fortunately, the staff had been kind enough and the signage clear enough that he was able to navigate the place easily despite his own poor sense of direction. He took a moment to marvel at it all before he felt the rough, instant prodding of a pair of antlers digging into his back,[break][break]

“Hey, watch it. He'll be here any minute,” Victor mumbled to the Stantler impatiently poking at him. [break][break]

Jaakko was the newest member of his team, a recent gift, but the deer was an ornery creature. Maybe it was because he was a little taller than the average deer Pokemon, his withers reaching close to five feet in height. Maybe it was because he didn't know Victor very well yet, and didn't have a modicum of respect for his new Trainer. Jaakko leaned forward, trying to nose his way into Victor's pocket to try and munch on his pack of cigarettes, his third attempt so far that day. Yeah, it was probably the second one.

Victor Haas is a Kantonian refugee who has spent the last six years living as a transient in Hoenn. A recent widower, he rarely lingers in one place in the region for too long, trying to stay one step ahead of whatever the next disaster is that's going to take place. The following information is what can be gleaned from a search of publicly available records, including birth certificates, financial records, social networking services, company websites, and obituaries.

Victor Haas was born on November 7th, 1991
He is the only child of Felix and Angela Haas, a banker and housewife respectively
A native of Lavender Town, he spent most of his life in the city until the Rocket takeover of Kanto
Left for Johto in the fall of 2009 to pursue a college education
Graduated from a college in Ecruteak City in the spring of 2013. Majored in journalism with a concentration in magazine media, and a double minor in journalistic storytelling and folklore
Married Naomi Sonozaki, a resident of Ecruteak City, in 2014
Moved with his wife back to Lavender Town and began work for a small tabloid newspaper called The Looking Glass in the winter of 2014
The majority of his articles feature alleged accounts of the paranormal or supernatural
Fled Lavender Town with his wife and their two Pokemon in August of 2017, just narrowly escaping the Rocket takeover

Victor thought he was going to have a heart attack. [break][break]

His first reaction was one of unbecoming shock, nearly flinging his thermos into the clear waters beyond when he jumped in surprise. He hadn't heard anyone approach, but hell, even a rampaging Onix could have snuck up on him for how caught up he was in his own self-important moping. The second reaction was, well... more shock, but it was a different sensation altogether when he recognized the voice that had been calling his name, [break][break]

“Caleb? Caleb Harcourt?” he replied in disbelief. He gaped at the other man for a moment. Victor squinted, just to make sure he wasn't mistaking the other man for anyone else. [break][break]

Then there was the third reaction; delight in recognition, an almost manic giddiness at running into someone from a much happier time in Victor's life. It wasn't often that he ran into a familiar face in this Arceus-forsaken region. Caleb's was almost jarringly so; he didn't look like he'd aged much at all since Victor had last seen him all those years ago. Victor's face broke in a smile as he started to make his way over to the other man, [break][break]

“Yeah, it's me!” Victor beamed, “I haven't seen you since we graduated! I- shit, how've you been? You look great, by the way.” [break][break]

Ah shit, he was getting carried away. Victor forced himself to take another sip of his coffee as his cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

There was genuine delight in Josh's voice when he discussed the riding classes offered at the Mauville Gym. That, if nothing else, had sealed Victor's fate; now he was going to have to follow through on signing up for a class, if for no other reason that to avoid potentially disappointing someone he was beginning to consider a friend. He stepped off the Ninetales and reached for the Pokeball housing the Toucannon, it's polished surface reflecting the dazzling Christmas lights of the festive store front they were stopped in front of. [break][break]

Riding on again, now nearly out of the Mauville Hills neighborhood, he felt his face flush at Josh's praise, [break][break]

“Well, uh, thank you,” Victor replied earnestly, “I dunno if I'm cut out for that line of work, though.” [break][break]

He couldn't deny that it was a wonderful thought, the idea of actually helping people and Pokemon instead of running at the first sign of trouble. And who knows what sorts of places he could go to and people he would meet in that line of work? But no, he knew his place; it was as a transient fleeing at the first rumblings of danger, barely scraping by with the ad revenue he received for whatever mediocre writing he could churn out for his blog. But now was not the time for a pity party; they were almost out of the district, and the Checkered Flag was calling his name. [break][break]

As they reached the edges of the Mauville Hills neighborhood, he saw a figure(?) running towards them in the distance. Victor really hoped this would be the last obstacle between him and his burger as he squinted his eyes to get a better look at whoever was bee-lining towards them. As the figure drew closer, he realized it wasn't a person, but another Ceruledge. The Pokemon was charging forward, bladed arms extended, clearly on the offensive. But why? Victor didn't have time to contemplate the specifics as the Pokemon launched itself in a leaping vault, attempting to land a descending Psycho Cut on Victor and the Ninetales he was riding, [break][break]

“Honoka, use Extrasensory!” he commanded. [break][break]

With a yelping cry, his own Ninetales hastily complied. Her eyes glowing with eerie, supernatural energies, which quickly enveloped the Ceruledge in a psychedelic shroud of pinks and purples. The force of the attack killed the wild Pokemon's vaulting momentum, sending it to a skidding halt just a few feet in front of the party. There was a moment of hesitation as it leered at the group. With a sigh, Victor tossed what he hoped would be his final Pokeball of the outing. After all, he couldn't exactly knock the creature unconscious and just leave it in the street.
