Yes, this one had potential. Ameena just needed them to realize that the situation held more gravity than they were offering it. [break][break]

"It is more than making friends," she explained, turning to walk back from where they came and expecting the new member to follow. "You need to entrench yourself in their lives, their network, and earn their trust while keeping your story straight and your allegiance straighter. It is your prerogative, how much you change about yourself in your approach. But you must always remember the face you show them." [break][break]

All good lies held truth. They would need to like their League contacts. All the hanging out and proximity and co-battling would create a real bond, but they would have to hold it at arms length, always. That was hard to do. It fostered a stress and guilt that couldn't be recreated in any other scenario. And it created a complex grief when the betrayal happened. Ameena wasn't sure they were actually ready for it, but starting small was a good beginning. [break][break]

"Do not push yourself to embed yourself in the League if you are unprepared. But consider it. I think you will be very valuable to us, and I hope you find value in your colleagues here. If you need anything, you need only ask." Ameena recited her Rotom contact information for Kasper.

He says it so easily. His response to divine intervention seems so matter-of-fact she nearly stops moving completely. She needed to sit in the library and come up with a contingency for every single deity at this rate. Cillian follows it with an even simpler truth, that he could not be left behind.[break][break]

She doesn't doubt he's seen and done enough to warrant such confidence. [break][break]

But she can't feel the same about herself. He turns the question on her as Gardevoir contains an Electrode in a psychic prison. "Well, dream research is not necessarily the cutting edge for tools of war." Or it did not seem that way. That penitentiary had shown her the power of dreams and tera crystals when used together, though she did not know where to begin with harvesting it. "I suppose its less about being left behind and more about not being able to keep up."[break][break]

The revelation hit her as she spoke it aloud. She was working so hard to build her teams and grow her knowledge of the region. "But I am almost prepared to build a Genesect. Their programming is just a little complicated..."

Ameena only paid Gwendolyn half a mind as she perused the ship. Megalopolans were such interesting specimens. It was a shame their culture was so incompatible with the rest of the world - cannibals certainly could not run free - and that they were not collaborative enough to spell out the secrets of the universe. Though, in fairness, she doubted they knew much more than anyone in Rocket despite their huge advancements in understanding Ultra Beasts and Ultra Space. [break][break]

She was pulled from her musings with Gwen's alarming voice. Ameena barely looked up in time to feel the ship shake and nearly knock her off her feet. The odd electrical cry was not compatible with Xurkitree. [break][break]

"Something bigger," she uttered, "and something that can kill Xurkitree." Ameena sucked in a breath and hurried back to the entrance. "It can shock the whole ship; we need to evacuate." The open air was not a big improvement, but the mobility offered them more choices than being trapped like Rattata. [break][break]

Stepping outside, she turns to see a large being of electricity. Without a doubt, this must be one of the gods that has made Hoenn its playground. Without a doubt, the two of them are outgunned. But. She had been training too hard with her colleagues in Rocket and had even faced Necrozma in a dream simulation; this was not more powerful than Necrozma. "Keep it off of us," she instructed Espathra sharply, who flew up immediately to antagonize the god. [break][break]

"We are leaving." She left no room for debate, releasing Corviknight and activating its megastone. "Get on!"[break][break]

Well, she felt inclined to agree that not all of the higher ranks in Rocket needed to be so uptight, but it would have been hypocritical to say it aloud, so she let the comment slide with mild amusement. She considered the group he was trying to craft. "Are you assessing these skills yourself?" Admittedly, she was nervous to battle him. [break][break]

She only defeated Amor in combat by using his own tricks against him, and she was certain he'd been holding back, too. Temp had developed a team of pokemon that were no strangers to war. Ameena's own were largely unaccustomed besides Espathra and Musharna who had been her companions in the Galarian military. Even then, only Espathra had the sadism and natural lust for combat to carry her in a real conflict. She was still constructing her best fighters, but she was leagues ahead of where her strength was prior. [break][break]

"Does this team need the same gadgets you have? I have only a few components necessary for that suit you showed off in the chasm." And he had been showing off, she decided. Who in their right mind would otherwise jump into a pit of feral iron boulders?

Perfect. As the round began, Ameena saw Rhys Collins ' reuniclus enter her spiked area. There was no reason to avoid such an advantage, even if she knew reuniclus were formidable pokemon. She had recently gotten her hands on one herself, and she had fully intended to force it into its shiny palette much as Rhys' was. Well, she would have to admire it later. For now, it needed to be punished for encroaching upon her space on the platform.[break][break]

"Strike him!" She ordered. Nihilego obeyed instantly, throwing a rocky power gem at the psychic pokemon. "Be cautious," she tacks on. The Nihilego had a penchant for getting into trouble with no care in the world. Consequently, Ameena had to ensure it used some sort of defensive action by her order. Nihilego launched a clear smog to reset any improvements the reuniclus might have tried to respond with. [break][break]

Ameena's head perked as she turned a corner and saw the unusual Arcanine, but just as soon as the optimism hit, she realized it was cuddling up to someone clearly its trainer. [break][break]

Wait. Was the girl familiar?[break][break]

Last time she was in the area, a soot storm had made it hard to see at all. Now, that she had a clearer look, it did seem the pokemon had the exact same coloring and pattern as the one on the mountain, and the girl seemed to be the right height. [break][break]

"You caught it after all," she said with displeasure. Gardevoir tucked close to Ameena, though with their telepathy, such proximity wasn't necessary for determining when to step in and protect.

Undercover things. [break][break]

It's broad. Not that that's a bad thing. Ameena can agree with the assessment on appearance alone - nothing about them looks terribly suspicious. She imagines the worst Kasper might face on a day to day mission might be an elder complaining about youth these days. The claim will require more testing - can Kasper perform under pressure? - but for today, keeping their wits about them is the most important trait. [break][break]

The quick draw of Tyranitar is good thinking. The bite nails Gengar and causes it to flinch. Ameena has little interest in watching a battle or risking unnecessary noise and waking any sleeping colleagues, so she assists, telepathically ordering Gardevoir to imprison the pokemon. Gardevoir then uses teleport with the Gengar, presumably dropping it off very far from HQ. [break][break]

"Undercover is good," Ameena finally said, stepping out from where she'd been hidden from the Gengar. "We might need some of that work in the coming conflict. Have you formed any connections with the League?" Networking with Rangers could build trust, but Kasper might need more connections in Rocket first to seem properly embedded in the organization. The line between spy and turncoat could be worryingly thin.

"Extreme," she echoed thoughtfully. What kind of extreme circumstances could divert the warpath they were on?[break][break]

"Like divine intervention?" Her question didn't come out as amused as she intended. Rather, it sounded genuine. But she had seen far too many gods, including the pantheon unveiled while in a Megalopolan prison. She knew Necrozma, but there were countless appearances. The actual god of space had roared and a green time fairy had clearly over-exerted herself to protect them all. Ameena had done nothing to earn the protection of a god.[break][break]

Was the group on the ship, collectively, too important to suffer? She feared a consequence so disastrous time itself had to be manipulated. [break][break]

She ignored the sound of Gardevoir subduing a Klingklang in favor of assessing the underboss' nonchalance. Perhaps, the war on the horizon was easier to stomach if you had a god on your side already. Ameena couldn't imagine the feeling. Her worries of the region and the war were not totally satiated, not yet, so she gambled on irritating him by asking, "In this unstoppable march forward, do you ever fear you will be left behind?"

Alliances were already forming, but Ameena wasn't close to anyone and knew next to nothing about most of the participants. She would make do without an alliance, at least for the beginning. She had four pokemon, so she had a chance to size up the competition before bringing out the big guns. [break][break]

It seemed she needed to bring out Nihilego who was the least seasoned in combat. The otherworldly pokemon was ideal for its trapping capacity. She settled in on an area of the platform where she had a decent distance between herself and others, then ordered Nihilego to release toxic spikes. Anyone coming to attack her first would face immediate punishment. "Defense first. We can show real power later," she asserted to her Nihilego. [break][break]

She wished she had had the opportunity to use the Nihilego's natural toxins on the pokemon in the gauntlet, but such a poisoning would've had to be done before making it to the field, and she wasn't sure if cheating would be celebrated or punished. Oh, well. She would play fair enough, at least in the beginning.

Alison's accent and tone are melodic. Ameena could listen to her all day, something she can't say for many of her colleagues. "Rocket may not be what you initially planned for, but I hope you will find that the opportunities here require a similar mix of luck and skill to pageantry and contests." In other words, the environment will be one she could fall into with little issue. [break][break]

Her support network was neither too large nor too small. Ameena felt a twinge of nostalgia as Alison mentioned relying on her father; Ameena used to have her mum, but all of her other family had preyed on her for years, and there was nothing but bad blood there, now. "Only myself and my colleagues." She trusted many of her fellow Rockets, perhaps too much, but she was talented at ensuring her interests aligned with those she worked with. Such an approach was necessary given how varied the goals were of her coworkers. [break][break]

"More colleagues makes for a better support net, I find," Ameena assessed as she told her Alazakam telepathically to stop staring down the other woman, "but because of the ruthlessness of the vetting process, newer members can find themselves kicked out if they fail to demonstrate value." There was no need to speak on what 'kicked out' really entailed. [break][break]

"Many evaluate based on pure power, but our organization requires more than brute force. I offer it my research far more than my military experience, for example. For you, I suspect you have talents far beyond brute force. But before we delve into those, do you trust your team to support you when pure power is needed?" Perhaps, Alison required more pokemon or a rigorous regimen to train those she had. It was easy to let your team fall to the wayside as you developed yourself; Ameena had been guilty of it herself.

The bait concept is good. [break][break]

"Go ahead, then. Look scared. I will just watch over here," she says as she indicates the tall plant in the hallway. She stands on the other side of it, not far at all from them. She considers the grunt's Audino with a poker face. [break][break]

It isn't an innately bad pokemon - do any exist? "I am more interested in what you offer Rocket. Tell me, are your strengths related to sabotage? To brute force? To undercover work? It is common for new members to be evaluated on power alone, but there are more versatile strengths you can offer. If you have nothing to offer... I am afraid your time with us will be cut short." She wants the kid to spit it out. Ameena doesn't want to see them discarded because they can't be the muscle. [break][break]

Ameena straightens as she hears the telltale laugh of a ghost. She leans forward from the plant she hides behind to look at Kasper in the middle of the hall - and a Gengar is floating up from the floor to scare them with his scary face. Amused, Ameena adds from behind the tree: "Audino has a power that can be drawn out with a mega stone." She knows with utmost certainty that this grunt will not have one for their pokemon. "And I hope it knows a versatile moveset; normal moves will do nothing to Gengar."[break][break]

With all the satisfaction of a scientist running an experiment, she eagerly waits to see how the grunt will manage the task of scaring off the ghost.

Gwendolyn handled herself wonderfully. Ameena was pleased once the two of them stood before the ship. Her immediate question also brought a smile to Ameena's face - that kind of curiosity made for an excellent scientist. She couldn't help but wonder if there was a way to naturally test her morality and principles, to see how elastic they were and how malleable the redhead was. Gwen would make a great protege and Rocket with her determination and bravery, but there were too many factors for Ameena to safely make an offer just yet. [break][break]

Realizing she hadn't answered Gwen for a full minute, Ameena finally shook her head and came back to herself fully. "I have not encountered enough Xurkitree to say for certain." It is unclear if this was someone's meddling or a natural but lengthy decay of Xurkitree. "Its body is all throughout the ship. These thick wires..." Ameena tried to navigate between them to get some intel from the ship, but every step was dangerous. [break][break]

The wires periodically sparked despite the clear death of the Xurkitree. "We may require even stronger protective equipment to explore. Electric-resistant soles will not prevent the severe burns contacting these wires will cause." She needed a full suit, perhaps the kind that Amor had worn when they first met in the Ultra Deep Sea. "I think it is safer to get out of the ship. No need to die for the potential of information."[break][break]

Not when Ameena was forming plans for Gwen, at least.

INTRODUCTION

Scrolling through the internet on a PC or your phone, you encounter an odd black-and-white pop-up. You find yourself reading: IS IT BETTER TO REMEMBER OR FORGET? There are only two choices. There is no way to close the pop-up. You may try restarting the device, but the pop-up reappears for you at one point or another. You must choose: REMEMBER or FORGET.

You are taken to MAUVILLE CITY. The pop-up was malware, revealing your location to the intelligence technology company, ABUNDANCE CONNECTIONS. With your location known and yourself put to sleep by the use of psychic pokemon, you were taken to AbCon's underground laboratory, which is kitted out for sleep studies. You are hooked up to a machine while unconscious, but so is someone else you've encountered before.

SUMMARY

SLEEP STUDY: GEMINI is a secret study that takes two people with past experiences and puts them into a shared dream space with a blend of Musharna sleep mist and interdream mist. The goal of the study is to see how two dreamers in a collaborative dream space will react to the same memory, with each dreamer's perspective painting the memory as they recall it. The study wants to see how the stronger psyche, that of the UNRELIABLE NARRATOR, manipulates the shared space, and if the other dreamer can course-correct.[break][break]

THE GOAL OF THIS EVENT is for two roleplayers to revisit a shared thread, ideally of significant emotional value or otherwise representative of a turning point in one or both characters' trajectories and development. One partner will manipulate the replaying of events as the UNRELIABLE NARRATOR, and both dreamers will traverse the repeated thread, experiencing curveballs, unreality, nightmarish apparitions, voices, memory skips, and bleeding through of other, unrelated memories.[break][break]

At the end, each player has the opportunity to choose to REMEMBER the original thread as it really happened or FORGET the thread entirely.

DREAMING

Out of character, both writers will put their characters in a setting where they are revisiting the chosen shared thread. You may start your dream at any point in that thread. Your characters will be subjected to their individual psyches as well as whatever arises from their shared mental states. The dream realm is unpredictable, particularly with the combination of Musharna and Interdream Mist -- your characters will experience odd prompts and occurrences periodically.

In character, you are totally asleep as you fell for the ol' malware-tracking and forced-sleep wombo-combo. Your character will experience prompts after each post cycle that influence the reliving of this memory, but the UNRELIABLE NARRATOR will have control over some prompts. You will wake up back home/from where you were taken, unharmed... though you may have forgotten something.[break][break]

RULES & GUIDELINES

This event is NOT first come first serve.
You must sign up WITH YOUR PARTNER.
Failure to post twice revokes your right to the final event rewards. You are encouraged to finish the thread, so please do not sign up with a partner you will abandon.
You may only sign up with one character.
Characters who FORGET may not be forced to remember with the use of psychic type interference. It seems you may need to visit a dream researcher...
Characters who REMEMBER will recall the original thread and may choose to also remember the dream. You can recall the pop-up, but its origin eludes you.
Most importantly:

Your thread should have SIGNIFICANCE. There should be importance to both characters in that thread. This is naturally subjective, but I trust everyone can evaluate their own writing and explain character beats/development in their application. You can use any type of thread like a mission or dual wilds, but there should only be both partners inside the thread -- so no massive event or raid threads. The thread must be canon.

HOW TO PLAY

When the event begins, the UNRELIABLE NARRATOR will initiate the thread with the character already dreaming. You may start at any point from the original thread the dream is based on. I.e., using a thread where two characters did a mission, argued, and had a falling out: I can start the thread during the mission portion, during the argument, or as the two characters start walking away from each other.
The duo will receive a prompt post every cycle.
The duo have one week to post between cycles.
The UNRELIABLE NARRATOR, as indicated on the application, may choose to change a prompt. This should occur in character, where the UNRELIABLE NARRATOR feels strongly about changing what happens in the thread. It is your choice to make this purely subconscious or "conscious." Please inform ghostfinch via discord ping or messaging ameena abadi on proboards that this is what you are doing.
All prompts given - including what is edited by player request - must be acknowledged. These are alterations to the dream realm "reality" your characters are in.
Some prompts may not be changed. These will be indicated as such in the post.
The question at the end of the event will be the same as the pop-up. Choosing FORGET means the character forgets the thread ever happened, but they may remember parts of the dream if you so choose. Choosing REMEMBER will let you retain knowledge of the original thread as well as this dream. Partners do NOT need to make the same choice.

PARTICPATING IN THIS MEMBER-LED EVENT will grant your character several rewards.
