He reminded her of Gwendolyn Conway, a young Ranger and science-aligned mentee that fought ferociously and with principle. The redhead had inspired Ameena to reach out more to those outside of Rocket. She wouldn't be so amenable to Montgomery without the earlier success with Gwen that made it all possible to imagine a world with League allies -- ones she fully intended to convert, but still. [break][break]

His pokemon struck with a fake out late into the battle, but it still threw Slowbro off his rhythm. He launched a psychic at the glowing Skarmory, which was good, because Ameena was stunned at the sight of it.[break][break]

She'd killed his original Skarmory. "And who is this?" What was the story? She had nothing but questions. She figured it would be beneficial to back off the civilian angle, something that seemed like a raw wound for him. It suggested... well, that he might be more open to the vigilante concept than she had thought he would be at this stage. She wanted to celebrate such a success, but she didn't believe in celebrating too early. The light of the Skarmory reflected the brightness that Montgomery offered her life, some recurring image to remind her that she wanted the light he offered her in a dark, unforgiving world.

They were anomalous pokemon. Outliers. Their behaviors were unlike anything ever seen before. God's alphabet, allegedly. She wondered how accurate that could be. [break][break]

Porygon pulled up the corrupted data from the sleep study for Ameena's perusal. She reviewed it quickly - what there was of it - while her Abracadabra teleported Howard and June from the ground floor of their building to her basement laboratory. She shut off the screen at the telltale sound of Abracadabra's appearance. [break][break]

She had moved in lounge couches into her laboratory and pushed the horrible, uncomfortable flat metal beds to the edges of the experiment area. Nothing could be done about the overwhelming clinical, sterile environment as a whole or the blinding white lights. "Settle in." She turned to look at them both. "You are going to be brought to a state where you are half awake and half asleep. Musharna will stimulate the sleeping brain and project its dream state for us all to witness; your waking mind will not influence much of the dream." She had theories about lucid dreaming, but she had no opportunity to garner test subjects for such experiments. [break][break]

"Musharna will begin only when you are both ready. I suspect the mist's interaction with both of you simultaneously will stimulate the subconscious to work through your shared dream."

Mossdeep reminded her of her failure. Battling here just before the climax at Sootopolis had been harrowing. She had had to put her allegiance to the test against her own desires, and it left a bitter taste in her mouth to be here again. But there were too many reports of Unown sightings. She needed to pursue more of the species. [break][break]

"Violet, right?" Ameena turned to her partner in crime for the task of seeking Unown. Ameena's own floated between them, flickering shadows teasing its sides.

She had expected a public figure with such a public failing to prefer privacy. She's delighted. He does not align with her expectations in any way. A test subject with more questions than answers could frustrate most scientists, but she finds them all to be opportunities to better explore the dream realm. [break][break]

"This problem should be resolved without further expansion of the mind. That said, if you find yourself fighting nightmares, especially as this war befalls us, I would happy to revisit this practice." She rises, as if to shake his hand, but she does not offer it. [break][break]

She wants to see his mind unfold completely. "If you happen to be available for such a venture, I would be happy to take you through the interdream zone. There are a few outcroppings where the mist reliably spills into our reality." Would she see Groudon? Elisabeth? The pretty blonde from his dream? More than any other subject of recent memory, she wants to tear into his mind and examine each nook and cranny -- but it requires the long game, she knows.

Studious and astute as ever. "I have no inkling as to why or how they have grown to be so large. It is unclear how much time has passed." She lifted her gaze from Gwen's documents and back towards the stairs. "Yes, let us continue." [break][break]

Lucario took the lead. They stuck to the staircase. "I suspect items of interest will be at the top. Others have traversed here, and the high ground is a logical place to store sensitive items to keep it all from the Megalopolans and the Ultra Beasts."[break][break]

Except, of course, they found an obstacle just a few floors up. She stepped out at room four from the staircase once she heard some odd sound, but taking a few steps into the blackened room revealed... [break][break]

A Blacephalon. [break][break]

She froze in place. Even her breath was trapped in her lungs. "Gwen." Her voice was soft, her eyes unmoving from the UB. "We need to go. Now."

She turned her head to hide a smile at the Slowpoke's antics. [break][break]

Their situation wasn't truly dire, and it was humorous. Still, such amusement belied her professionalism. She coughed and cleared her throat, then re-assessed the situation now that they were without the yawn. [break][break]

"We could try tying him up or inflicting some other hinderance. Lucario does not have the means to confuse nor poison, however." She looked around their environment for something helpful, perhaps even a wild pokemon they could stimulate into a poison spore or something, but then an ice beam shot her way from the angry paradox. [break][break]

Lucario used extreme speed to knock her out of the way, the two of them sliding to a graceless stop. Ameena looked at her wrist as if to check the time. "We need to move quickly or abandon the effort; League eyes will alert them to us performing tests on the paradox pokemon."

At his core, he valued people. [break][break]

It was exploitable. The baseline desire to serve and protect people could be served by her side or even fully independent as a vigilante without her resources; he did not need to stay so strongly with the League nor within its legal system to accomplish such a noble goal. As the world complicated his role, he would get pushed out of it naturally. He would inevitably be forced to choose between helping the innocent and pushing a League agenda. [break][break]

Malamar fainted. Slowbro took his place, generating a psychic terrain. A toxic chain hung from its neck. [break][break]

"Innocent people lived in Sootopolis, too. League interference caused the flood that killed and displaced thousands. Or do they not count because they were worthwhile sacrifices to the League agenda?" Her tone is light, too light for the subject matter, but she only wants to provoke a thought exercise. They are allies outside of this battle, and it is only for appearances that they fight. She's too opportunistic to pass up the opportunity to prod his moral defenses, but she won't press so hard as to damage him. Not mentally, at least... she looked forward to dressing his wounds later. For a brief moment, she regretted bringing it up at all.

The Zoroark kept transforming - or, more accurately, becoming illusions of people. She watched from the sidelines as the swarm of them spilled into the alleys. They entered as pokemon and left appearing as people, many of whom were in the crowd they stepped into. Most interestingly, there was a kabuki play going on and some of the actors had made their way to the street. The Zoroark didn't seem to perceive how outlandish the actors were and illusioned themselves into their visages without hesitation. [break][break]

The Zoroark did not master the same dance moves and performance as the actors. She shared a look with Lucario. It would be easy enough to trick one into a corner and capture it... especially when their behavior stood out from that of real people.

Knowledge was power, but it could also foster deep-seated paranoia. In this case, the knowledge was largely about what they didn't know, and that made it all the worse to be burdened with. [break][break]

The scene blurred aggressively into the night market. "This is a new scenario," she commented sharply, with warning. Then, belatedly, she added: "to me, at least." But she was plenty seasoned. She had repeated several scenes. A new one stood out to her. [break][break]

Especially since the simulation would get more and more dangerous as time went on. [break][break]

Terror and panic filled the air in the form of screams as the crowd dispersed. A Blacephalon stood in the center, lugging its exploding head around. She had witnessed these in Lesser Megalopolis firsthand. "Hypnosis," she ordered as she released Moira. The Musharna used her psychic prowess to confuse the Blacephalon into a trance, giving them a moment's pause. "We should attack it to solve the problem. That should tell the simulation to push us forward."

She's pleased the request is so readily accepted. [break][break]

"I have many things, but an artist's eye is not one of them. I trust your judgement, but with the overwhelming white glare of the room, I think it will look perfect so long as it does not also reflect that boring palette." She couldn't say how well a muted color scheme would work versus a vibrant one, or if monochrome would be more dazzling than complementary colors, but she could see the passion in Rosemary and trusted her to use it well. [break][break]

She made a habit of working with folks who operated in passion, anyways. The apathetic were the least trust-worthy companions in all areas - military support, research, and even artistic endeavors. "If I can make any request... I would be pleased to see crystals featured inside." The tera crystal-laden caves of Hoenn were her favorite to visit. Galar had none. [break][break]

She pulled out a card for her secretary and offered it to her. "Please call him to set the invoice and organize logistics. I trust whatever you dream of will suit us just fine at AbCon."
